• Qu'est-ce que le poeme critique de Mallarme?

  En expliquant son <> dans la <> des Divagations (1897), Mallarme a sacre une nouvelle ecriture : le poeme critique. C'est, tout d'abord, comme le poete l'indique, une evolution du poeme en prose baudelairien, mais aussi l'aboutissement de <<[sa] recherche>> litteraire apres <> du vers libre. Or, on trouve egalement dans les lettres a Albert Mockel (17 oct. 1894) et Charles Bonnier (fev. 1895) cette expression mallarmeenne, utilisee pour les feliciter de leurs ouvrages : Propos de litterature et Cheres faces. La lecture de ces deux textes nous apprend que le poeme critique consiste a reflechir sur la poesie plus moderne. Mais, paradoxalement, <>, la derniere section des Divagations, traite de sujets apparemment etrangers aux Lettres, les affaires sociales ou politiques. Nous nous proposons dans cet essai d'eclaircir les causes de ce decalage et d'expliquer comment elles produisent une forme <> pour demonter les systemes en crise d'une societe qui aliene la poesie et qui empeche l'apparition d'un poeme ideal, le Livre.

  Invite a Oxford et Cambridge en 1894, Mallarme a fait une conference sur la musique et les lettres. Apres son preambule, il commence a parler de l'apparition du vers libre comme d'une des nouveautes les plus surprenantes. Alors que deja pres de dix ans se sont ecoules depuis que l'<< on a touche au vers >>, pourquoi Mallarme traite-t-il soudain de cela comme d'un phenomene venant d'apparaitre? Le vers libre n'etait-il pas connu meme en Angleterre, puisque le chroniqueur qu'etait Mallarme avait deje insere un article intitule << Vers et Musique en France >> dans le periodique anglais The National Observer en mars 1892? Par consequent, c'est d'une part, parce que le conferencier entreprend de satisfaire a la demande universitaire: Lecture consacree a la litterature francaise, d'autre part, c'est qu'il y trouve un sujet primordial a traiter: << l'attentat >> commis sur le vers. En effet, cette metaphore structure la conference tout comme elle la deruit, car le titre annonce aurait << les Lettres et la Musique >> pour organiser devant un public anglais, une fete poetique. Pendant les annees 1892-1894 appellees << ere des attentats >>, par leurs actions directes, les anarchistes << mettaient le feu >> a la capitale. Mallarme note des similitudes entre le vers libre et la bombe. Son interet pour l'engin lance par l'anarchiste Vaillant, l'oblige a examiner les dommages et les contributions de << l'attentat >> politico-poetique et a reflehir plus profondement sur ce qu'est le vers. Aussi, au lieu d'<< enguirlander l'autel >>, le poete-pretre exprime un doute fondamental: << Quelque chose comme les Lettres existe-t-il >>? Nous nous proposons dans cet article d'analyser la metaphore de l'attentat qui rapproche et relie, dans ce << morceau d'esthetique raide >>, ces deux phenomenes de la fin du XIX^e sicle que sont le vers libre et la bombe anarchiste, afin d'eclairer leur repercussion sur la poetique mallarmeenne.

• A revoir : en marge des "Variations sur un Sujet"

  ベルトラン・マルシャルによって編集された新しいプレイヤード版『全集』(全2巻1998 & 2003)の刊行により,新世紀のマラルメ研究を支える基盤がひとまず整えられたように思う。しかし,不満がないわけではない。とりわけ,「演劇に関する覚え書」(1886-87),ナショナル・オブザーバー紙掲載の記事(1892-93),「ある主題による変奏」(1895)といった批評を,『ディヴァガシオン』(1897)の前テクストの位置にとどめてしまったようにみえることが非常に残念である。それは,マラルメのようなエクリチュールの書き手のテクストをどのように扱い,どのような視点から考察するのかという重要な問題に関わってくる。マラルメを,とりわけ彼の批評テクストを,決定稿へと精錬させるパースペクティヴにおいて読むのではなく,一方では「生成論」的なまなざしを,他方でバルトがバルザックの校正刷に向けた同じまなざしをそこに注ぐことで,己れの生きた<世紀>に対峙する詩人の態度,つまりマラルメのべつの姿がそれ自体として見えてくるのではないか。マラルメ作品の「生成批評版」はそのような作業のためにこそ不可欠なのである。The basis that supports Mallarme studies in the new century has been prepared by the new OEuvres completes (2 vols) for 'Bibliotheque de la Pleiade' edited by Bertrand Marchal, excellent researcher. However, there should be some points to be reconsidered. We may not be satisfied with the treatment of Mallarme's criticism activities : "Notes sur le theatre" (1886-1887), National Observer essays (1892-93) and "Variations sur un Sujet" (1895). Marchal seems to calculate the value of those texts in his edition to treat them simply as 'avant-texte' of Divagations (1897). Now, we should try to read Mallarme's critical writings among the others not by the way of confining 'preoriginaux' in a so-called definitive version, but by the genetic way or by the way Roland Barthes would gaze on the proof of Balzac. In doing so, our poet, who faced toward the 'siecle' that he lived, or, in other words, another Mallarme 'tel qu'en lui-meme' would appear from the pages where we pursue 'noir sur blanc'. It is concerned with an important problem how we should treat and what aspect we should consider when we examine the texts of a writer like Mallarme. For the future, therefore, the diplomatic edition of Mallarmean works is indispensable for a such study.

• Am I Seeing an Apparition? : Hoping for a Performance of Mallarme's Herodiade

  I wanted to examine Les Noces d'Herodiade: Mystere (The Nuptials of Herodiade: A Mystery Play; published posthumously in 1957), an unfinished work by Stephane Mallarme, a symbolist poet who lived in Paris at the end of the 19th century, and consider the possibility of its performance. It is probably the assertion by Mallarme that Herodiade, which he started work on when he was 22, "is more a collection of poems than a tragedy" that has often caused people to lose sight of the fundamental connection that the work has with theatrical performance. From a reconstruction of the composition process of more than 30 years based on letters and other materials, the poet's own discourses on drama, and an interpretation of the text itself, in a multifaceted way, I show that this work is, in a sense, a musical score for the "festival" that Mallarme envisioned in his final years, and by considering its suitability to the theater, I offer a vision of the stage performance that may one day be realized.

  I browsed all the books kept at Stephane Mallarme Museum, for accumulate their bibliographic data. And I supplemented this data by additions of information that is found in the Correspondence of the poet or catalogs for sale, etc., << Bibliotheque de Stephane Mallarme >> was finally completed. This book, in alphabetical order by author, then by year of publication, could make visible a "literary field" of France fin de siecle, or it clarify the reading that Mallarme had practiced daily : Hugo, Gautier, Banville, Poe, Balzac, Michelet and Renan, etc. It will benefit not only to those who study the Republic of Letters dreamed by the poet, but also to those who reappraise the formation of young Mallarme's thought.

More specifically, we try to clarify the peculiarity of vision of Mallarme, by comparing the texts of this french poet and other dramatic criticism in those days. And also, by reading plays intended to his comment, and the use of engravings published in magazines or newspapers. In parallel, we built the database of the performance in Paris of late 19^ century and theater reviews addressed the same works that Mallarme had seen (or read) and criticized.

  ジャック・ドゥーセ文学図書館での資料調査により、「ある主題による変奏」校正刷の批評校訂版を修正・調整し、最終的に「生成批評版」として完成させた。著作権の関係でまだHP(http://www.geocities.jp/mal_archives/)上での公開はしていないが、将来的には公にできたらと考えている。その批評連載に直接・間接に関わるであろう諸テクストは「ルヴュ・ブランシュ」誌に掲載されたものを中心に書誌を作成し、そのうちのいくつかをデータベース化した。この作業は今後も継続的に進め、マラルメをめぐる言説ネットワークをより緻密なものにしていきたい。 今年度はまず6月に関西マラルメ研究会で「マラルメ-ヨーロッパより見たる」を発表。ヨーロッパという視点からこの詩人を考えると同時に、マラルメが「ヨーロッパ」という場をどのように捉えていたのか、そしてその可能性について問題提起をした。 10月には日本フランス語フランス文学会秋季総会で、「中心の虚無に立ちもどる-マラルメの『カトリシスム』をめぐって」と題し、学会発表をおこなった。ベルトラン・マルシャルが『マラルメの宗教』を刊行した1988年以降、この詩人における宗教の重要性は誰しも認めるところだが、カトリックの代換宗教としてイメージされることの多いその「宗教」に対し、そのようなキリスト教への準拠それ自体を問い直すことから、マラルメの宗教とはどのようなものであるのかを明らかにしようとした。その際、「カトリシスム」を書く契機となったユイスマンスの『出発』をめぐる当時の批評言説との関係を踏まえたうえで、この批評詩を『出発』への応答として読み、詩人の狙いを考察した。この発表は現在、学会誌掲載のための査読中である。 また、詩人の別荘があるヴァルヴァンで起こった出来事から書き起こされた「葛藤」と「対決」を採りあげ、文学の場(あるいは社会におけるその余地)を「労働」という視点から論じた。
