- In the Metaphysics Θ Aristotle introduces two types of dynamis (dynamis as ability (DA) and dynamis as potentiality (DP)). It has been often pointed out that his distinction between DA and DP is confusing. In this paper, I examine the difference between them and the significance of his detailed explanation of DA in the first half of Θ (ch.1-5), and thereby I show the following. The Philosophical Association of Japan, Apr. 2004, 哲學, 第55号、pp.218-230(55) (55), 218 - 230,30, Japanese
In the first half of Θ, Aristotle basically understands DA as an external (objective) principle of motion. This characterization is neutral with regard to the framework of hylomorphism and whether relevant motion happens or not. But in his criticism against the Megarians who deny dynamis, he indicates that dynamis can be regarded as potentiality. This criticism serves as a point of contact between of ability and potentiality. On the other hand, in the latter half of Θ, the notion of potentiality implies that dynamis is only conceivable as energeia (actuality). However, DA and DP are not exclusive kinds, the difference consists in that of perspective and there is no genuine confusion.
Further, DA plays an important role in introducing DP by analogy. In Θ6, DA functions as the starting point of an analogical argument. That is, there is an analogical progression which proceeds from the scheme ofto that of . In this respect DA has a methodological significance in Aristotle's potentiality-actuality theory. - Aristotle's Conception of Body (Physikon Soma) in De Anima B1In De Anima B1, Aristotle characterizes body as potentiality, but then he maintains 'homonymy principle,' which means that body is as such only when it is actually living. In this paper, through considering this aporia, I showed the following. i) Potentiality in this context means possibility of continued existence of organism, so it consists with body's actual living. ii) He has two contrasting perspectives about body. According to his thought, body is purely physical, mean while it is virtually identical with soul. iii) These two perspectives being connected, his conception of body is situated at a kind of materialistic line.Hokkaido University, 17 Jul. 2005, Annals of the Philosophical Society of Hokkaido University, 41, 右21 - 右42, Japanese
- Disclosure (or explanation), understanding, and consent (or choice) are essential elements for Informed Consent (IC). But in fact, there are many obstacles on the way to patients' understanding. In this paper, examine what is the suitable way for explanation to promote understanding which can be adequate to be precondition of consent. There have been many discussions about the 'standard' of disclosure up to now, but they can not give an adequate answer to this above-mentioned problem. It is often pointed out that there are two major methods to solve this problem, i.e. avoiding excessive amount of information and promoting suitable interpretation of information. I maintain that, as one of the several ways of explaining to realize the latter, analogical explanation of information is effective. But significance of this way has not been fully pointed out yet. 'Analogy' in this context consists of two factors which doctors select, that is, target and base. The target is a series of information of which doctors intend to inform patients. It is usually medically-specified information, so it is often very difficult for patients to understand. The base is a thing by which doctors intend to explain the target and to make them interpret it properly. The base must be an ordinary and well-known thing for patients, and at the same time it must hold some relation or correspondence to the target. By using such analogy in addition to other ways, doctors' explanation can be helpful to patients' understanding. Moreover, if improper use of analogy is avoided and each patient's autonomy is held, analogy can be used in order that doctors guide patients to choosing the option which they judge to be the most desirable for his or her patient.Japan Association for Bioethics, Sep. 2004, 生命倫理, 14(15) (15), 176 - 183, Japanese[Refereed]Report scientific journal

- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kobe University, 2007 - 2009A research on "Kyodo(homeland)" as geographical and Social thoughtThis research project aimed to examine a representational and material process of an idea of "Kyodo(Heimat, homeland)" in the modern Japan. Our particular research interests revolved around three modalities, (1) how the idea was accepted, (2) how the idea became postulated as a stable entity in nations' geographical imagination, and (3) how various practices for the representation of the "Kyodo" took place and were developed. In so doing, we focused on a relationship between an educational system, molded up by the Ministry of Education, that invented teaching programs and materials to teach pupils geography of their own 'homeland', and other various movements such as developments of folklore and folk craft studies, discussions over a museum display of the localness, and promotion of domestic tourism. We also unveiled how the idea of "Kyodo" contributed to an anchoring of coherent local communities. The research leads us to understand various aspects of the development of the representation of "Kyodo".
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Shizuoka University, 2005 - 2007Study on Psyche' in the Ancient Greek PhilosophyOur project has focused on a basic aspect in the ancient Greek philosophy, namely ‘psyche' where the study on Plato and that on Aristotle run across, and aimed to transcend the lint of individual researches on the bases of the each study. Specifically, our targets are to analyze the definitions and functions of psyche in Plato and Aristotle,e.g. to expound 'thoughts', sensations, 'feelings', 'belief',' desire' and 'images', and explain how these are related with bodily organs. Through cooperation in these studies we attempt to deepen our understanding, and clarify points of arguments between Plato and Aristotle, also in contemporary meaning form the viewpoint of the philosophy of mind and the ethics concealed with norms. For these purposes, we have meetings every year Particularly in the year _:- and 2006 we have fruitfully discussed with foreign scholars, especially with professor David Charles (Oriel College, Oxford University). Through these joint studies on psyche we have recognized that the grasp of 'Psyche' made up the test of the ancient Greek ethical thoughts. We have confirmed that the grasp of psyche is decisive in understanding and analyzing the concept of virtue and it raises series of problems which converge in the phase of 'eudaimonia'. So, now, we think of a new joint research-project on the ancient Geek ethical thoughts.
