- The objective of this paper is to develop assessment models to quantitatively evaluate the seismic damage caused to resilient concrete columns intended for buildings located in strong-earthquake-prone regions such as Japan and China. The proposed damage assessment models are based on the fractal analysis of crack patterns on the surface of damaged concrete columns and expressed in the form of a fractal dimension (FD) versus transient drift ratio relationship. To calibrate the proposed damage assessment models, a total of eighty images of crack patterns for eight concrete columns were utilized. All the columns were reinforced by weakly bonded ultra-high-strength (WBUHS) rebars and tested under reversed cyclic loading. The experimental variables covered the shear span ratio of the column, the concrete strength, the axial load ratio, and the amount of steel in the WBUHS rebars. A box-counting algorithm was adopted to calculate or derive the FD of the crack pattern corresponding to each transient drift ratio. The test results reveal that the FD is an efficient image-based quantitative indicator of seismic damage degree for resilient concrete columns and correlates strongly with the transient drift ratio and is subjected to the influence of the shear span ratio. The influence of the other experimental variables on the derived FDs is, if any, little. Based on the test results, a linear equation was developed to define the relationships between the FD and transient drift ratio, and a multi-linear equation was formulated to relate the transient drift ratio to the residual drift ratio, an important index adopted in current design guidelines to measure the repairability of damaged concrete structures. To further verify the efficiency of the drift ratio-based FD in seismic damage assessment, the correlation between the FD and relative stiffness loss (RSL), an indicator used to measure the overall damage degree of concrete structures, was also examined. - In order to find a suitable size of sheath duct and a reliable construction method for precast walls, a cast-in-place and five 1/2 scale precast drift-hardening concrete walls reinforced with weakly bonded ultra-high strength SBPDN rebars were fabricated and tested under reserved lateral load and constant compression. The experimental variables were the diameter of sheath ducts (45 mm, 100 mm, and 120 mm), embedded length (20d and 35d; d is the nominal diameter of SBPDN rebars), axial load ratio (0.075 and 0.15), and the construction method. The experimental observations, hysteresis behaviors, envelope curves, residual deformation, crack propagation, and energy dissipation were compared in the study. Moreover, a formula was applied to calculate the bond strength of the sheath duct. The experimental and calculated results revealed that increasing the axial load ratio and embedment length could not enhance the bond strength of the sheath ducts, and increasing the diameter decreased the bond strength significantly. - This paper experimentally and analytically investigated the damage and seismic behavior of concrete walls reinforced by low-bond ultra-high-strength (LBUHS) bars. To this end, four half-scale rectangular concrete walls were fabricated and tested under reversed cyclic loading and constant axial compression. The test variables were the shear span ratio and the axial load ratio. Based on the test results, the propagation of cracks on the wall surface, the maximum strain capacity of concrete, the hysteresis loops and envelope curves, the residual drifts, and the strain distributions of LBUHS rebars were presented and discussed. The experimental results showed that all the test walls could exhibit drift-hardening capability until at least a 2.0% drift ratio if LBUHS rebars were anchored by nuts at their ends. The test results also indicated that the maximum strain capacity of concrete was above 0.86%, much larger than the currently recommended 0.4%. After unloading from the transient drift ratios of 2.0% and 2.5% for the walls with shear span ratios of 1.5 and 2.0, respectively, the measured residual drift ratios were controlled below 0.4%, which is less than the critical drift ratio (0.5%) having 98% repairable probability recommended in the FEMA document (P-58) for general concrete structures. - The usage of weakly bonded ultra-high strength (WBUHS) rebars has emerged as a promising approach to enhance the resilience of concrete components due to their remarkable mechanical properties. To promote the application of WBUHS rebars, this paper presented an investigation on the seismic behavior of circular concrete columns reinforced with squarely arranged WBUHS rebars and externally confined by bolted steel tubes. Eight columns, including two reinforced with normal strength (NS) rebars and six reinforced with WBUHS rebars, were fabricated and tested under reversed cyclic lateral loading. Experimental results showed that the columns reinforced with WBUHS rebars exhibited remarkable drift-hardening capacity up to the drift of at least 5% as well as significantly reduced residual deformation even when subjected to relatively high axial compression with an axial load ratio of 0.33 in comparison to the traditional ductile columns reinforced with NS rebars. Notably, the precast columns reinforced with WBUHS rebars, with an embedment length of 20 times their diameter, behaved nearly identically in terms of resilience as cast-in-place columns. - Pilotis structures consisting of upper concrete bearing-walls and a soft first story have been well used in residential and office buildings in urban areas to primarily accommodate parking lots. In this research, drift-hardening concrete (DHC) columns developed by the authors are proposed to form the pilotis story with the aims of reducing its excessive residual drift caused by stronger earthquakes than anticipated in current seismic codes, mitigating damage degree, and enhancing resilience of the pilotis story. Nonlinear dynamic analysis was conducted to investigate the dynamic response characteristics of the wall structures supported by DHC columns. To this end, two sample six-story one-bay pilotis structures were designed following the current Japanese seismic design codes and analyzed. One sample structure is supported by ductile concrete (DC) columns, while the other is supported by DHC columns, which have the same dimensions, steel amount, and concrete strength as DC columns. Three representative ground motions were adopted for the nonlinear dynamic analysis. The analytical parameter was the amplitude of peak ground acceleration (PGA), scaled by the peak ground velocity (PGV) ranging between 12.5 cm/s and 100 cm/s with an interval of 12.5 cm/s. The analytical results have revealed that the residual drift of the pilotis story composed of DHC columns could be reduced to nearly zero under selected earthquakes scaled up to PGV = 100 cm/s, owing to not only the inherent self-centering ability of DHC columns but also the shake-down effect, which implies that the use of DHC columns can greatly enhance resilience of pilotis structures under strong earthquake inputs and promote its application in the buildings located in strong earthquake-prone regions. - Abstract A reinforcing method for developing a kind of shear wall with both excellent self-centering capacity and high energy dissipation was presented, in which carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars or steel strands were longitudinally placed to provide a restoring effect, while magnetorheological (MR) dampers were externally coupled with wall panels to provide extra energy dissipation. To verify the feasibility of this method, three slender concrete walls were tested under reversed cyclic lateral loading while subjected to constant axial compression with an axial load ratio of 0.26, of which one was reinforced with CFRP bars, the second one was reinforced with CFRP bars and two external MR dampers, and the third one was reinforced with steel strands and two external MR dampers. The results indicated that the test walls possessed remarkable load-resisting capacities even when the lateral drift was as large as 1.8% as well as a lateral deformation recovery rate of 74%–89% after unloading. Owing to external MR dampers, the initial stiffness and ductility were increased by 28.3% and 29.8%, respectively. In addition, a specific quantitative analysis showed that the dampers could increase the cumulative energy dissipation of shear walls by 16.6%, of which the contribution provided by MR damper was 64.8%, confirming the effectiveness of MR dampers in improving energy dissipation while preserving the self-centering capacity.Last, IOP Publishing, Apr. 2023, Smart Materials and Structures, 32(6) (6), 065005 - 065005, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Composite action between the components of the concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) is complex and it is difficult to accurately obtain the experimental relationship between the steel tube and the core concrete of CFT columns. The triaxially stressed core concrete has been studied by hydrostatic test in past research, while little research has been focused on the mechanical behavior of steel tube of CFT columns. It is difficult to obtain the experimental constitutive relationship of the steel tube of CFT columns to reflect the real-time influence of biaxial stress state and local buckling of steel plate on the steel tube. To clarify the mechanical behavior of the steel tube of CFT columns, this paper proposed an elastoplastic analytical method considering biaxial stress state and local buckling of steel tube to obtain the stress–strain curve of the steel tube. This method applied the Hook’s law and the plasticity theory to interpret the information conveyed by the measured vertical and hoop strain histories of the steel tube. To verify its effectiveness, 11 circular concrete-filled steel tube stub columns were fabricated and tested under axial compression. Superposition results of the axial load–strain of steel tube and core concrete were compared against the experimental curves. The widely used Sakino–Sun model of the confined concrete was adopted to calculate the axial load–strain curve of the core concrete. Satisfactory agreements between the calculated and experimental results confirmed the rationality of the proposed method in tracing the constitutive relation of the biaxially stressed steel tube even after the occurrence of the local buckling. - The compressive zone of concrete with a circular cross-section is simplified to an equivalent rectangular stress block with a width, height and thickness of the peak concrete strength considering the confinement ratio. The shape factors of the equivalent stress block at any concrete strain level are modelled through selected equations of the ratios of the axial load and moment sustained by compressive concrete. The proposed equivalent stress block is used to predict the force–displacement behaviour of a circular, reinforced-concrete (RC) column considering steel bond slip. A comparison with the test results of column specimens indicates that the proposed equivalent stress block can predict the lateral responses with good accuracy; moreover, the variation in the strain of longitudinal rebar and the deformation ratios of flexure and steel bond slip can also be reasonably predicted. - Four circular fly-ash concrete columns reinforced by steel rebars with different bond levels were tested to investigate the influence of bond strength of longitudinal steel rebar on the seismic behaviours of reinforced-concrete (RC) members. Furthermore, a fibre-element method considering steel bond slip was used to investigate the influence of bond properties of steel rebar on seismic responses of circular RC columns, with the test results used to validate reasonability. The comparison of results shows that the anchorage of the steel rebar has a significant influence on, and the plastic hinge length no effect on, the seismic behaviours of the columns. The analytical and test results show that low bond strength delays the yielding process of steel rebars adjacent to the beam–column interface, which can improve the deformability of RC columns, but does not obviously influence the moment resistance. However, the stiffness of the cross-section is reduced from a certain drift level. Six equations are proposed to predict with very good accuracy the reduced ratio of the stiffness of the cross-section, the enhanced ratios of the drift at the ultimate moment and the drift at the maximum lateral load of the column models reinforced by bonded or unbonded steel rebars.Emerald, Aug. 2020, Magazine of Concrete Research, 72(15) (15), 778 - 798, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

Abstract Experimental investigation on seismic performance of RC shear walls reinforced with CFRP bars in boundary elements to enhance the resilience was presented which is expected for stable resistance capacity and small residual deformation. Six RC shear walls reinforced with CFRP bars as longitudinal tensile materials in boundary elements were tested under reversed cyclic lateral loading while subjected to constant axial compression with different axial load ratios of 0.17, 0.26 and 0.33, respectively. Two forms of stirrups were used for each axial load ratio, which were rectangular and circular stirrups in boundary elements. A reference specimen, ordinary RC shear walls, was also introduced to certify the excellence of CFRP bars. The test results indicated that the walls utilizing CFRP bars had small residual deformations and residual crack widths. Lower crack propagation height and larger concrete crushing region, bearing capacity and equivalent viscous damping coefficient (EVDC) could be observed with the increase of axial load ratios. The effects of stirrup forms on experimental results had a relation to the axial load ratio. When the axial load ratio was small, the shear walls with circular stirrups had better energy dissipation than that with rectangular stirrups at a given drift level, while the cumulative energy dissipation (CED) were similar. - We proposed a new retrofitting element to externally retrofit existing concrete buildings. The proposed element consists of a monolithic steel column and steel beams at each story level, and looks like a tree. - Sixteen shear-type friction dampers were made and tested under cyclical loading to investigate the effect of the lap gap on the frictional resistance of the damper. The test results have indicated that the frictional resistance of a shear-type friction damper depends not only upon the tensile force by the high-strength bolts that clamp the slipping steel plate but also strongly upon the lap gap. Based on the experimental results, a formula for assessing the effect of the lap gaps on the frictional resistance of the damper was developed. - 複曲率曲げを受ける角形CFT 柱の偏心圧縮実験Eccentrically compression tests of forty-three square concrete-filled tubular (CFT) columns were tested under double curvature deformation to investigate applicability and validity of current design formula for CFT slender and middle-length columns. Experimental results have indicated that the current design formula could predict flexural strength of slender CFT columns fairly well. - 3104 主筋の降伏点応力が高強度RC骨組みの耐震性能に及ぼす影響に関する研究(高強度コンクリート(構造))Fc=80N/mm^2級の高強度RC骨組みに一定軸力下の繰り返し載荷実験を行い,同幅厚比の横拘束鋼管を用いた,同軸力比下の試験体において主筋降伏点応力の違いが骨組みの耐震性能へ及ぼす影響を調査した。この線主筋に降伏強度fsy=894~997N/mm^2の高強度鉄筋を用いると,fsy=347~395N/mm^2の普通鉄筋を用いた場合に比べ骨組みの水平耐力が向上し,大変形時のひび割れや残留変形が抑制される効果が観察された。一方,主筋に高強度鉄筋を用いた試験体のエネルギー吸収能力は,普通鉄筋を用いた試験体に比べて劣ることが明らかになった。日本コンクリート工学協会, 2008, コンクリート工学年次論文集, 30(3) (3), 619 - 624, Japanese

- Behavior of the scaffolding structures made of torii-type scaffolding frame under wind loading was studied by conducting nonlinear pushover analysis. A simple model that is consisted of five members is proposed in this paper instead of the prototype model of the torii-type frame with the aim of upgrading the analysis efficiency. - A Multi-segment beam element was proposed to study effects of several primary factors involved in the nonlinear pushover analysis on the calculated capacity curve of reinforced concrete frame structures. Analytical results have indicated that the use of traditional dumped hinge beam element couldn't trace the spread of the plastic hinge region as the increase of deformation. The axial load in both side columns of a frame structure might be increased up to three times of their initial levels induced by the dead load. - Four moment-resisting concrete frames were tested under cyclic reversed lateral load while subjected to constant axial compression. The test specimens were made of high-strength concrete having target strength of 80MPa. Aiming at verification of the effectiveness of a new confinement method, columns of the test frames were confined by square steel tube in lieu of conventional hoops. Test results showed that the HSC frames could behave in a very stable manner till large deformation even under high axial load with axial load ratio of 0.5, when the columns were confined by steel tube. - As the second part of an integrated theoretical and experimental study of earthquake-resisting performance of the reinforced concrete columns confined by square steel tube, this paper presents experimental results conducted over twelve reinforced concrete columns confined by square steel tubes having five kinds of wall thickness. The columns were tested under reversed cyclic lateral force while subjected to constant axial load to study the effect of wall thickness of the square steel tubes on the seismic performance of the columns. It is shown that the effect of wall thickness on the earthquake-resisting capacity of the confined columns depends on the applied axial load level; the higher the axial load was, the more significant the effect of wall thickness. Experimental results also indicate that strengthening the square steel tube with inner stiffeners in the potential failure regions of the column could enhance confinement effectiveness of the steel tube significantly. - This paper proposes a seismic retrofitting technique for existing R/C buildings by attaching steel bracing frames to the columns projected from the exterior walls of buildings. Two types of the experimental parameters were focussed in this paper. One is the joint technique between the retrofitting steel columns (beam) and the R/C column (beam). The other is whether or not to anchor the base of the steel columns to the foundations of R/C frames. The cyclic lateral loads were applied to the model specimens, which were about 1/3 the size of R/C frames in school buildings under a constant axial load in the experiments. The experiments and the analyses leaded the following conclusion. The full lateral load carrying capacity was developed in all the specimens regardless of the joint techniques between the steel frames and the R/C frames if the bases of the steel frames were anchored to the foundations of R/C frames. - Deformability of RC Short Columns confined by Square Steel Tube鋼管横補強正方形RC短柱の変形性能に及ぼすせん断スパン比と横補強用鋼管の板厚の影響を実験的に明らかにするために,これらを実験変数とした250x2501nlnの正方形断面を有するRC柱供試体に対して一定軸力下における繰り返し曲げせん断実験を行った。その結果,柱のせん断スパン比が短くなると鋼管は曲げ圧縮変形に起因するコンクリートの横膨らみのみならずせん断変形に起因するコンクリートの横膨らみをも拘束することになるため,柱に十分な変形性能を保持させるためにはより厚肉の鋼管で補強する必要があることが分かった。Corresponding, 日本コンクリート工学協会, Jul. 1998, コンクリート工学年次論文報告集, 20(1) (1), 551 - 556, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- A complete stress-strain curve model for concrete confined by rectilinear reinforcement was proposed. In this model, the confinement effect of rectilinear steel, including common hoops and square steel tube, was evaluated by using effective lateral pressure factor. Major variables influential in the confinement level of transverse hoops were contained in the effective lateral pressure factor in a relatively simple form. - Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kobe University, 01 Apr. 2022 - 31 Mar. 2026Development and performance assessment of resilient prefabricated concrete columns付着強度の低い、超高強度ウルボン筋を正方形状に配置したPCaRC円形断面柱の耐震性能および修復性能を実験的に調べるために、柱に用いる主筋の種別(異形鉄筋、ウルボン筋)、ウルボン筋の端部定着長さ(20dと30d)、柱のせん断スパン比(1.7と2.5)、柱に作用する軸力の大きさ(軸力比が0.20と0.33)、および柱の製作方法(一体打ちとプレキャスト)を実験変数に取り、ウルボン筋を用いたRC造プレキャスト円形柱と一体打ち柱を計12体を製作し、それらの試験体に対して一定軸力下における繰り返し曲げせん断実験を行った結果、以下の知見が得られた。 1)薄肉円形鋼管による横拘束とウルボン筋を主筋として用いれば、普通強度の異形鉄筋を用いたRC造柱よりレジリエンスの高いプレキャストRC造柱の創出が可能である。 2)径厚比が132である非常に薄肉のボルトで接合した円形鋼管で拘束されたRC造柱は、軸力比が0.33と比較的高い軸力下においても、部材角6.0%まで高いドリフト硬化性(耐力が水平変位の増加に伴い上昇し続ける特性)を示せると同時に、部材角4.0%までの載荷を経験した後の残留部材角は最大経験部材角の1.5/10まで小さく抑制でき、優れたレジリエンスを有する。 3)アンカーで定着されたウルボン筋の埋め込み深さは呼び名直径の20倍程度にすれば、せん断スパン比にかかわらず、薄肉鋼板で拘束されたプレキャストRC柱は部材角6.0%まで一体打ち柱と同等なドリフト硬化性と修復性を示せる。 4)ウルボン筋を断面内において正方形状に配置し、ボルトで接合した薄肉鋼板で拘束した円形プレキャストRC柱の履歴性能を評価するため、ウルボン筋の付着すべりの影響を考慮に入れた解析手法を構築した。構築した解析手法で求めた本提案PCaRC柱の履歴性状を大変形域まで比較的精度よく評価できる。

In our method powders were mixed with constant cement content per unit volume of concrete, so the performance of concrete, for example compressive strength, ductility and durability, became higher than the similar mix proportion concrete without such powders. From the results by the analyses and the experiments using real size specimens, it was proved that this concrete could be used as the members of concrete structure, and the design methods for mixture, structural and durability were shown clearly.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kyushu University, 2002 - 2003Study of Cyclic Behavior of Confined High-Strength Concrete Moment-Resisting FramesThis report presents experimental information on the cyclic response of confined high-strength concrete (HSC) moment-resisting frames along with an analytical method to evaluate the failure mode as well as the ultimate lateral load capacity of the confined HSC frames. The tests involved six one bay and one-story HSC moment-resisting frames, which consisted of two 200x200mm square columns confined by steel tube and one 180x300mm. rectangular beam confined by conventional hoops. All of the frames were made of HSC with designed strength of 80MPa and were tested under combined cyclical lateral force and constant axial load. Test results have indicated that confinement of the columns by steel tube could ensure very stable cyclic performance to HSC frame even when it was under high axial load. Since confinement by steel tube can contain the whole of concrete in a column, no abrupt strength degradation occurred in the hysterestic loops of the HSC frames till large deformation. It has also become clear that strengthening the square steel tube with inner stiffener could enhance its' confinement effect significantly. The square steel tube, which had width-to- thickness ratio (B/t ratio) of 87 and was strengthened with inner stiffener, provided the same confinement effect as the steel tube with B/t ratio of 33 but without inner stiffener, while the steel amount of the former is only 55% of the latter. This report also presents a design method enabling structural engineer to simply evaluate the ultimate lateral load and deformation capacity of confined HSC frames. This method involves consideration of confinement effect by the square steel tube and simplification of calculation procedure for the ultimate. load and deformation capacity of confined HSC columns and beams. Comparison between the theoretical and the measured results has indicated that the proposed design method could predict experimental results very well. In addition, all of the test frames performed in a ductile manner as designed, which implies that the proposed design method also enables engineers to reliably predict the failure mode of the confined HSC frames at the stage of design.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), KYUSHU UNIVERSITY, 1999 - 2000Study on Flexural Behavior of High-Strength Reinforced Concrete Columns Confined by Steel TubeAn experimental study of monotonic flexural behavior of reinforced concrete columns confined by square or circular steel tube was conducted to investigate effects of lateral confinement by steel tubes on ultimate flexural properties of the confined high-strength reinforced concrete columns. Twenty test columns, ten of which were confined by square steel tubes and the others by circular steel tubes, were made of high-strength concrete with compressive strength of 60MPa or 100MPa, and all of these columns were tested under combined monotonic bending moment and constant axial compression. Test results indicated that flexural response as well as ultimate properties of a confined high-strength concrete column not only depended upon wall thickness of the steel tube, but the axial load level as well. It has also been shown that confinement effect of circular steel tube was much higher than that of square steel tube when the steel tubes had the same wall thickness. The most interesting experimental result obtained in this study was that the compressive strain at the extreme concrete fiber of the confined concrete section developed at the maximum moment was not a constant as recommended in many current design codes, but a variant increasing as the confinement degree provided by the steel tubes almost regardless of the axial load level. Parallel to the experimental study described above, an analytical study of the flexural response of confined high-strength reinforced concrete columns was carried on to develop a simple and practical method of theoretically evaluating the ultimate moment and deformation capacity of confined concrete column. Based on the results of parametric study, a mathematical expression for predicting the ultimate strain of confined concrete was developed. Furthermore, two rectangular equivalent stress blocks were proposed to simplify the calculation of ultimate moment capacity. One stress block was proposed for columns confined by square steel tube and the other was for columns confined by circular steel tubes. Good agreement between the measured results and the theoretical predictions verified validity of the proposed stress blocks.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), KYUSHU UNIVERSITY, 1997 - 1998Seismic Performance of Reinforced Concrete Columns Confined in Square Steel Tube with Thin Steel WallIn the experimental phase of research, total of twenty-three reinforced concrete columns confined in square steel tube (tubed columns) were subjected to cyclic shearing force and deformed in a double curvature pattern. The experimental parameters were aspect ratio of column (2.0-4.0), width to wall-thickness ratio (B/t=28- 117), and magnitude of axial load. The following conclusions are reached on bases of the research. 1. The failure modes of tubed columns with aspect ratio of 2.0 and 4.0 are shear failure and flexural failure, respectively. It is noteworthy that lateral deformation capacity is greatly enhanced with the decrease in Bit ratio and with the decrease of axial load level even in the short columns failed in shear. 2. The flexural strengths of columns can be satisfactorily evaluated using the simplified method that utilizes the equivalent stress block based on the stress-strain model for confined concrete proposed by Sakino and San. They should be enhanced using a factor that takes the effect of extra confinement from end stubs into consideration. 3. The lateral load capacities, as dominated by shear, for short column specimens can be fairly evaluated using AIJ-A method, which is analytical method based on plastic theory, although it underestimates the capacity of specimens with large lateral steel ratios. On the other hand, the Arakawa's empirical shear formula also can be used.
