- In the increasingly complex world, it can be difficult to fully comprehend the nature and organization of society. This study presents an educational model for social studies based on Niklas Luhmann's theory of communication. The theory provides educators with a method to teach citizenship education more effectively in ways that better prepare students to participate in complex societies where diverse opinions and perspectives are represented. This method provides students with opportunities to participate in realistic simulations involving common societal issues, thereby promoting their flexible thinking and ability to assess situations from multiple points of view. The model positions students in real-life situations and requires them to work through challenges to resolve complex issues and problems, using social analysis and criticism. The study consisted of the following four steps. First, I classified social studies education research into four categories based on the relationship between knowledge and society and identified the characteristics associated with each category. - This paper investigates the methodology of learning environment analysis by recursively examining the differences between educational practice in citizenship education and lesson structure theory from the relationship of citizenship awareness. This study recursively analyses the differences in citizenship education practices and their logic by focusing on how close children's citizenship awareness approaches the educational practices of their teachers and not by using the methodology of determining the learning principles and their effectiveness using deduction methods from an analysis of the curriculum, teaching materials and lessons traditionally and commonly used in citizenship education in various countries. The research procedure first involved clarifying the research methodology, followed by analysing educational practices in citizenship education that featured the same topic in the United Kingdom and Japan; finally, it examined the differences in the lesson structure theory and the underlying foundation in the two countries based on an analysis of the results of a citizenship awareness survey given to the children. The results of the analysis firstly showed a large difference between the two countries in educational practices for citizenship education and revealed a consequent difference in citizenship awareness in the two countries. Specifically, British citizenship education, which promotes political citizenship education, has lessons structured around actual activities to discuss and perform activities related to re-enacting behaviours displayed in society at school. - 「公民単元『国際連合について考える』−『国家・社会の形成者』を育成する中学校社会科授業の開発(2)−」The purpose in this paper is to develop the lesson plan for teaching social studies in junior high schools to consider the international society. We developed the unit plan "Considering the United Nations." The aim of this plan is to recognize the perspectives and views of the UN. We have prepared two views of society in the international level to plan the unit. One is an idealistic view that there must be no conflict in the international society. Another is a realistic view that in the international society people manage the conflict politically. As students have learned an idealistic view in elementary social studies lessons, we have planed the lesson that they recognize an idealistic view and a realistic view. - The purpose in this paper is to develop the lesson plan for teaching history in junior high schools to consider Kenkaryouseibai. We developed the unit plan "Considering Kenkaryouseibai." This plan aims recognize the perspectives and views of Kenkaryouseibai. We have prepared two views of society in the middle ages to plan the unit. One is a viewpoint of state power that Sengokudaimyo refused to decide a quarrel. Another is a viewpoint of moderateness that Sengokudaimyo evaded that he decided a quarrel. - The purpose in this paper is to develop the lesson plan for teaching junior high school social studies to consider a home and house. We developed the unit plan "Considering a home and space." The aim of this plan is to recognize the perspectives and views of a house. We have prepared two views of space to plan the unit. One is a common knowledgement view. Another is a Sociological view. As students have a common knowledgement view already, we have planed the lesson that they recognize a common knowledgement view and a Sociological view. - The purpose in this paper is to develop the strategy and lesson plan for teaching elementary social studies to introduce a new view of society. We developed the unit plan "Considering maps, could you think what's a map" which is organized so that a student's view of map might be raised from a low level to a high level. We have prepared two views of map to plan the unit. One is a copy-theory of map, i. e., a view of map that a map copies reality. Another is a composition-theory of map, i. e., a view of map that a map is selected and constituted of portions and elements in reality. - Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Research (Exploratory), Gifu University, 28 Jun. 2024 - 31 Mar. 2027Research on reforming culturally inclusive learning:Creating citizenship education that takes a proactive and critical view of culture.本研究は、子どもが対話的授業の中で行う思考(特に合意・不合意が発生する思考過程)を分析し、彼らの思考過程に基づいた教育論(対話的教育論)を開発するものである。 研究実績としては、主に2点である。第1は、中等段階の子どもが持つ社会認識と、社会系教科(主な対象は教科書)・教師が想定する社会認識の内容とズレの解明に関する先行研究の分析を行なった。第2は、第1の分析結果を踏まえて対話に関するサンプル実践を開発し、附属学校を含めた協力校で複数の研究実践を行った。それらの成果の一部は、「手続きとしての「対話」から原理としての対話へ――解釈型歴史学習の批判的継承」『グローバル社会における解釈型歴史学習の可能性』帝国書院、2024、および「STEAM教育から見た社会科教育」『教科指導におけるSTEAM教育の新展開』開拓社、2025に実践した授業とともに論じ、公刊した。また、スウェーデンで開催された25th Children’s Identity and Citizenship in Europe Academic Network annual conferenceにて、How can teachers encourage students to have an honest dialogue about social issues?として学会発表を行なった。
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Chiba University, 01 Apr. 2019 - 31 Mar. 2025Research on the development of global teaching materials for ethics education utilizing the conflict between profession ethics and civic ethicsThe purpose of this research was to develop ethics education materials that utilize profession ethics and civic ethics that can be put into practice in school education in Japan and other countries, taking into account the newly established "Public" and "Ethics" within the high school"civics" , and moral education, and to disseminate the results to other countries. In this research, "conflict between profession ethics and civic ethics" refers to a situation in which the decision-making and value judgments regarding a certain social phenomenon differ between professions with "specialized knowledge" and citizens, leading to clashes and each trying to overcome the other, with their respective ethics serving as the basis for this. We developed 15 teaching materials based on the above-mentioned "conflict between profession ethics and civic ethics" model.

I analyzed in 2018, the social studies lesson :soda tax is for or against? at Chicago Laboratory schools. In 2023, I printed the thesis, How can elementary school teachers teach social studies lessons that foster citizenship in Australia? -Focusing on gatekeeping history lessons and teachers’ resources-.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Gifu University, 01 Apr. 2020 - 31 Mar. 2024Research methodology about lesson development utilizing the process of reconciliation with dissensussThis study aimed to develop a methodology for lesson design that utilizes the process of negotiating dissensus, with a particular focus on making value conflicts visible within the classroom and examining how such conflicts are mediated. Through this approach, the study explored the possibilities of democratic school education. The findings can be summarized in two main points. First, drawing on the theories of Apple (2014) and Biesta (2014), the study theoretically clarified the significance of constructing democratic schools by highlighting how education that focuses on dissensus can influence student learning.Second, it examined the practical potential of Philosophy for Children (P4C) as an educational approach. By designing, implementing, and analyzing lessons that reconstructed the teacher and student relationship, the study revealed both the effectiveness and the challenges of such practice.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Gifu University, 01 Apr. 2018 - 31 Mar. 2024Study on Educational Support of Foreign Students in SubjectsWe have developed a teacher training program to provide teachers specializing in subject education with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to "support students who need Japanese language instruction to be able to recognize the Japanese used in class and the learning contents". This program consists of three modules, in each of which students learn about the learning rights of international students, learning support methods, and the language to be used in subjects. In addition, we have also developed a portal site that provides the teaching materials used in the above program and links to help teachers find the Japanese language teaching materials they are looking for. In summary, this study has developed a package for learning the fundamentals of educational support for students who need Japanese language instruction in subject instruction.

In addition, I analyzed the ideas inherent in the social, cultural, and political aspects of specific subjects, and developed and implemented classes to analyze and dismantle the actual situation and process in which specific values and ideas create certain ways of seeing and thinking in society, which in some situations act through education, and showed the results of this analysis and implementation.

The results of this research were published in 2022 as "Theory of History Education from the Perspective of Relevance: Case Studies of Japan, the US, the UK and Germany", and in 2023 and as "The Logic and Practice of History Teaching to Build Relevance: Case Studies of Other Countries and Japan". And the results of this research were reported at various conferences, also published on the webpage (https://history-lessons.site/).

(1) as a result of analysis, this lesson with political contents took up a manner and action about politics, and,on the elementary school politics unit(Ikeno 2016a, 2017c, Ikeno & Okinishi 2021a) was doing citizenship in a problem. (2) A manner about the political action had ties with the democracy, and in particular, an each person's manner and action recommended an aggressive thing to participation and participation (Ikeno 2016b, 2017b, 2018a). (3) Adopted a dramatic technique to push forward participation and participation, and let the possibility of the child student spread (Ikeno & Watanabe 2018c, Ikeno & Okinishi 2021a).

Then, through interdisciplinary collaboration between subject pedagogics researchers and geography/history researchers, and through dialogue with overseas research collaborators, a workshop will be held for school teachers in Japan to develop and critique lesson plans based on the structured 'qualities and abilities' and to return the results to students, who should be the greatest beneficiaries of these plans. The aim is to return the results to the students, who should be the greatest beneficiaries.

The first is to show the logic and possibility of social studies based on dialogical learning. The goal of inquiry is either self-reflection or consideration. The inquiry theme (content) is whether the object is a concept or a meaning. The procedure (method) of inquiry is the difference between the utilization and organization of generalized and conceptualized knowledge, and the evaluation and examination of knowledge by individualized and personalized experience. The second is to show the possibility of social studies lesson study driven by curriculum development. The difference in dialogue is the difference between the curriculum-based teacher's and child's experience, and the culture or context they belong to. - Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Fund for the Promotion of Joint International Research (Fostering Joint International Research), Gifu University, 2017 - 2019Dissensuss / consensus - handling of disagreement in dialogical learningFirst, this research has established an organized social studies education research and practice team by Leeds Beckett University and Gifu University, and was able to build a continuous international joint research system for both parties through practice and verification.Second, I was able to stay in the UK for a long time (12 months) and build a network of researchers. This time, in addition to the planned affiliated schools, we were able to collaborate with five elementary and secondary schools and proceed with collaborative research with school teachers.The third is specific research content. I developed a social studies theory based on communication theory, collaboratively developed classes at multiple schools, and verified the results.

We tried to examine the mediation logic to introduce to the place of learning as a theory of education including the contents / method based on the goal, as a theory of curriculum, and examined the learning theory which made it a means of mediation instead of the theory of motion to promote mediation education. As a result, it became clear that teaching materials according to subjects and areas, and ability to manage by the teacher side are desired, depending on the learning content of the mediation and the aim. Children 's questionnaire also suggested that if more than one lesson is effectively combined to constitute a comprehensive unitary moral education program, it can be utilized as a more effective educational program to foster problem - solving skills.

Based on that idea, we focused on the emotional concept of empathy. Then, we examined the theory and method of forming historical thinking and understanding through working empathy. First of all, based on the literature research of the United States and the UK and listening to researchers, we construct a theoretical hypothesis for teaching and evaluating the empathy, then confirming the work of empathy based on observation and analysis of excellent history class, we clarified the validity of the theoretical hypothesis. Ultimately, we developed a teaching model and evaluation criteria for secondary history class.

What value notion did you acquire? When did you acquire it?Moreover, what judgment did you do in the class? As a result, it has been understood that schoolchildren often do a subjective, arbitrary judgment based on the experience of daily life.On the other hand, it has been understood that the high school student and the university student were using the concept of utilitarianism etc. as a value criteria.We proposed to take social ethics to the class of social studies of the elementary school and the junior high school, and to need the curriculum connected with the high school based on this result.

In order to achieve this objective, we interviewed the 22 researchers in the world majoring in subject pedagogy about teaching and research philosophy, social responsibility and identity. As a result, it became clear that the extent to which researchers are involved in the society (curriculum development/school practice) depends on the following situation and individual perception. (a) Is there a divergence between academic theory over practice and reality of practice? (b) Does researchers have an intention that want to support the improvement of educational practices through his/her teacher education, research and social service? (c) Is it also recognized as his/her own social responsibility to do so?

- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Hiroshima University, 21 Oct. 2013 - 31 Mar. 2017International Comparative Research on Citizenship Education focus on Diversity and DemocracyOur research found out the followings. 1.we tried making three types of the European and American model, the Asian model, and the Japanese model of citizenship education.2.we tried a typology of the state of the citizenship education based on the research of the educational relation between the education for drama and the education for citizenship in England.3.we made citizenship education three types and clarified characteristics of each type, and found that each type is aiming to bring up a search of common Goods, in other words the "universal value" in which everyone should have as the common characteristic as a person, the mankind everywhere beyond each country and an area.

It has also made it easier for Japanese history education researchers and history teachers to come into contact with the history lessons actually given in various other countries. The materials prepared for this research are being utilised via our website and other means by educational centers for workshops and by universities for lectures and so forth. It is hoped that this research will be the first step toward eliminating the state of “national isolation” of Japan’s history lessons.Competitive research funding

We announced it in an 2014 annual meeting of Japanese Educational Resarch Association for the Social Studies and Japanese Association for the Social Studies , finally we made a report of study results.Competitive research funding

The main results of our study are as follows; (1) the total amount of developed scientific activities is 33 for 3 years. 17 scientific activities are for young children in kindergarten and 16 ones for in primary school. (2) Some characteristics of young child’s exploration could be found by analyzing their “Words” and “Behavior”. Firstly Young children tend to gaze their interested objects for a while. Secondly they tend to throw a look at their friends’ behavior and conservation when they did not know how to do it during their exploration. (3) Eight kinds of the developmental viewpoints during their exploration which can affect the formation of scientific literacy could be extracted from the data of transcripts.Competitive research funding

The first is to clarify the method of fostering Japanese students’ ability to apply social studies knowledge and skills. For this purpose, curricula and lessons from Britain and the United States that foster ‘application ability’ were investigated. The second purpose is to develop a lesson structure for social studies in Japan based on the findings. Moreover, a curriculum organization is presented. The lesson structures of ‘Conjugation of the method of academic search’, ‘Concept conjugation’, and ‘Criterion conjugation’ were developed as outcomes of the research. In addition, the organization of the curriculum of the competency base was proposed to clarify the curriculum contents.Competitive research funding

And then, we clarified following three as the curriculum which integrate national history with world history; 1)reorganize the contents of national history by the global perspective, 2) deal with the events of national history as a case study of the development of world history, 3) focus on the method of reading primary sources like a historian.Competitive research funding

The reasons why do they emerge among Japanese researchers are as follows. Because, (a) they regard the educational Research as supplement to educational Development, (b) they recognize the Researcher has a significant responsibility to collaborate with the Practitioner for problem-solving and class-improvement, (c) their disciplinary perspective influences to the criteria of introducing the western research tendency into Japanese academic society.

First,the framework in this was able to analyze the theory and practice of citizenship education through a historical study on civic education in prewar and postwar Japan, and through a comparison of the idea of citizenship education in England today. Second, this study presented the idea that theories on the content and evaluation of citizenship education aim to provide solutions for social issues by promoting scientific investigation on these issues.
