- Abstract In marine container drayage (CD), which refers to the transport of goods over a short distance, empty containers (ECs) are required to be transported long distances between a terminal and a shipper/consignee by conventional transportation. This causes truck traffic congestion in harbor districts that increases CO2 emissions (CO2EM). This study addresses the vehicle dispatch problem with respect to the environmental impact of marine CD, considering the tractor dwell time is long at the customer site due to cumbersome container loading/unloading (L/U). We model this problem as an extended version of the vehicle routing problem with precedence constraints to minimize the total CO2 weighted travel distance. To improve CD operation in long L/U time, we propose a new practice for CD operations. Additionally, we develop a mixed integer programing model (MIP) for the new practice representation, and propose a Simulated Annealing (SA) based heuristic approach to solving the new practice instance. By implementing our proposed new operation, in a long L/U time, the CO2EM, EC move and number of tractors required can also be reduced by allowing uncoupled tractor move.Springer Science and Business Media LLC, Aug. 2024, Annals of Operations Research, English, International magazine, Co-authored internationally[Refereed]Scientific journal
- This study seeks to explore the effectiveness of employing foldable containers (FLDs) in liner shipping to reduce relocation and the empty containers and bunker costs (BCs) associated with ship operations. This resolves a minimum-cost multi-commodity network flow problem by optimizing container fleet size and empty container relocation in a multi-port shipping service network. Port handling time and sailing speed provided by obtained optimal solutions enable the determination of ship BCs as a secondary step. The numerical experiments demonstrate the comparative effect of FLDs against standard ones on the reduction of the costs of empty containers and containership bunker oil.Silesian University of Technology, Jun. 2024, Transport Problems, 19(2) (2), 67 - 80, English, No password, International magazine[Refereed]Scientific journal

- In order to use the quay space efficiently, we address various cases of partitioning arrangement in a given quay space operated by multiple units of one-berth, one unit of multiple-berth, and multiple units of medium and small sizes consisted of one or more berths. In this paper, we investigate the impact of partitioning arrangements and rush-hour traffic on quay space utilization. From the computational results, the arrangements operated by one units of large-size and multiple units of medium-size outperform those done by the others, in most cases. However, it is clear that total service times depend on ship arrival pattern, ship service distribution and rush-hour traffic.Japan Institute of Navigation, Oct. 2012, 日本航海学会論文集,, No.127, 215-222, 215 - 222, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- The efficiency of a container transport system primarily depends on the ship scheduling, which is regarded as a complex dynamic application. Therefore, this paper is concerned to ship stowage problem while satisfying the ship safety in her voyage at a number of ports-of-call, which obviously determines the economic performance of the liner shipping companies. When the ship goes to multiple ports-of-call, the stowage problem has been considered at each port in her routine. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer programming and a heuristic is developed to solve it.Japan Institute of Navigation, Mar. 2009, The Journal of Japan Institute of Navigation, 120, 157-164, 157 - 164, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Container is a standard in worldwide transportation method, which is capable of being moved by sea, road or rail with relative simplicity. Due to the continuously increasing container trade, many container terminals as well as liner shipping companies are presently frustrating to shorten the turnaround time of a ship for financial savings. Therefore, any methods to improve the containership stowage process would be significant. This paper examines the effectiveness of container arrangements in order to evaluate how to optimize the stowage plan, which was established at the present port and associated with the unloading plan at next port. The efficient of the ship stowage plan is evaluated by the minimum number of rehandled container required and the maximum value of ship stability obtained during to trip from the present port to the next port. The genetic algorithm is employed as a heuristic for the approximately optimized solutions and the validation of the proposed approach is performed with some computational experiments.Japan Institute of Navigation, Sep. 2008, The Journal of Japan Institute of Navigation, 119, 179-189, 179 - 189, English[Refereed]Scientific journal
- Faster turnaround time of vessels is one of paramount factors in a container terminal for assuring competitive advantage in the shipping industry, which can be achieved by efficient handling process of vessels, especially the associated loading plan in the loading sequence. This paper deals with the ship loading problem regarding to the number of cranes to be used in a loading process while keeping reasonable ship stability. In order to preserve the ship stability, some heavier containers may be stowed at the bottom of ship holds. When those containers are stacked below others on a yard container block which are withdrawn later, it may required a number of rehandles when they are retrieved from the blocks. The efficient of loading process is evaluated by the minimum number of container rehandles required. To solve this problem, a mix integer programming is formulated. The genetic algorithm, which is widely applied for a plenty of practical mathematical programming, is employed as a heuristic for the nearly optimized solutions and a wide variety of numerical experiments was made where solutions by this problem are useful and applicable in practice.Japan Institute of Navigation, Mar. 2008, The Journal of Japan Institute of Navigation, 118, 271-281, 271 - 281, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

Two key and interrelated issues of deployments of ships and containers are usually treated separately by most existing studies on shipping network design. In this paper, both issues are considered simultaneously. The problem is formulated as a two-stage problem: the upper-problem being formulated as a Knapsack problem and the lower-problem as a Flow problem. A genetic algorithm based heuristic is developed for the problem. Part of the increased costs is the result of overcapitalization to the port for the relatively small cargo volume. For terminal efficiency, we have already investigated the dynamic berth allocation in a multi-user terminal, where the handling time of a ship is assumed to depend on its quay location and container stock location. However, the time is given in the berth allocation model without considering sophisticated operational aspects in the terminal.
Research society

The terminal location, terminal configuration and resource behavior complicate decision making. This study focuses on containers arriving from the land side to a marine container terminal as one of resources, we developed a mathematical model to evaluate the terminal layout with container-to-yard arrangement. By treating containers as a group and arranging time unit, it is possible to represent relatively simple mathematical formulation. From the computational results, this study analyzes the effect on service time by terminal configuration, ship arrival pattern, and external truck arrival pattern, number of container handled etc.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kobe University, Apr. 2017 - Mar. 2020Most merchandized cargo traffic of the world trade is sea-borne and air-borne with efficient use of containers. The global economy is so complex that trade is in most cases imbalanced, resulting in an enormous volume of empty container repositioning. Due to sea- and air-containers with design features fitting to their transportation modes, each type of container is repositioned by its own transportation mode. Assuming special sea- and air-container concepts with folding function, both of which can be repositioned by any of both transportation modes for empty repositioning cost saving; this study established an evaluation system to examine how this kind of the so-called hybrid empty container repositioning concept works out.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Tokai University, Apr. 2015 - Mar. 2018This study examined the economic viability of the hybrid containers. The problem was separated into two container management problems, namely, foldable containers and combinable containers, due to their complicated model structure. They were formulated as a mixed integer programming model and an analytical model. This study found that, under certain conditions, foldable containers and combinable containers can significantly reduce the empty container repositioning cost and the container fleet cost, respectively. However, modeling the problem of hybrid containers remains critical to achieve real benefits in using hybrid containers.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kobe University, Apr. 2013 - Mar. 2017Some of the major overseas airports adopt the peak-load pricing for the tariff airlines pay. Due to this pricing concept, airline demands of using an airport do not likely intensify during a specific period of time. As far as the seaport is concerned, most of the calling ships tend to call at a port (container terminal) during a specific time mainly due to the cargo owners' preference. Introducing the pricing concept for the port like the airport, this study has developed an optimal berth scheduling optimization model to minimize the total turnaround time of calling ships by spreading the calling demands over the predetermined planning horizon.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kobe University, Apr. 2013 - Mar. 2016Containerships are getting larger and larger, involves the handling equipment requires advanced technology in marine container terminals. As one of some ideas, multiple types of handling equipment are often operated in a specific terminal. In this project, we propose the way to operate multiple types of handling equipment simultaneously at a specific terminal and also to find the situation effectively being operated. To be concrete, we investigated terminals that multiple types of equipment have already operated in order to find features of those terminals and machinery characteristics. After that, we developed the mathematical model with parameters and constraints such as terminal configuration and container block layout. In order to find effectively feasible solutions of the model, we developed the algorithm by using metaheuristics. From computational results, it is clear that one type of equipment outperforms multiple types of equipment, in small size problem with optimal solution.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Kobe University, 2011 - 2012As the containerships have become larger, the container terminals in foreign counties come up with various ideas to make the layout in order to be smoothly operated. There are many rectangular container terminals in the world. However, there are also polygonal terminals in foreign counties. In the rectangular terminal, one aisle between container blocks is located in same interval as others along the quay length, and the size of one container block is also same as others. In the polygonal terminal, the aisle between container blocks located and the size of container block are dependent on the shape and the region and so on. Therefore, this study proposes the algorithm for optimizingthe aisle location between container blocks and the container arrangement in yard area with a shape given in advance.Competitive research funding

For the container storage arrangement, we relax some constraints, and develop the algorithm for solve the problem. For the estimation of handling time, we develop the model to simulate the terminal by handling equipments, and also develop the multiple regression model to estimate the handling time by using parameters and handling time obtained at numerical experiments. From the numerical results of storage arrangement with handling time data by machine type, it is clear that most suitable type of handling equipment depends on port congestion.Competitive research funding
