- Abstract To investigate the structural and spectroscopic properties of saffron starches, saffron bulbs and isolated three types of starch are cultivated at different growth stages. All saffron starches exhibit fine particles (8.38–13.15 µm) and a C‐type X‐ray diffraction pattern. Furthermore, the particle size, amylose content, water content, and crystallinity of the saffron starch change during the growth and development, in particular, at bud formation. Saffron starches have unique characteristics compared with corn, potato, and banana starches; the amylose content is high in spite of the fine particles. Raman spectroscopy indicates that the intensity of the main starch band at 473 cm–1 is stronger in saffron than that in other botanical sources. This result can be attributed to the fine particles of saffron starches. - HighlightsA method to simultaneously determine membrane water permeability (Lp) and nonosmotic volume (Vb) is proposed. The proposed method revealed that Vb was neither proportional nor constant to the protoplast size. Individually determined Vb improved accurate estimation of Lp. During storage, Lp increased and Vb decreased in spinach leaves, which may well indicate produce freshness. Abstract. Membrane water permeability is of great importance to better understand the mechanism of water loss; however, its correct understanding and measurement is still an issue. We proposed and tested the efficacy of a numerical analytic approach for the simultaneous determination of the hydraulic conductivity (Lp) and relative osmotically inactive volume (b) of protoplasts isolated from spinach mesophyll tissue. The new approach revealed that the osmotically inactive volume was neither proportional nor constant to the protoplast size and differed for each protoplast. Usage of individually determined b for the computation provided the best fitting performance for determining the Lp, whereas collective b decreased the accuracy of regression and resulted in the underestimation of Lp. Our approach also has the advantage of a shorter period of hyperosmotic challenge, and as such, is suitable for observing fragile protoplasts. We found a gradual reduction in b and a linear increase in Lp during four days of storage at 20°C, likely due to degradation of internal components and dysfunction of the cell membrane, respectively. We also discuss the potential need to consider tissue specificity and possible damage by protoplast isolation to conduct shelf-life research of leafy vegetables. - Efficient cultivation methods were investigated to promote the branding of products in plant factories. Moderate stress can enhance plant constituents that are beneficial for human health, without reducing yield. Dehydration stress in lettuce rhizospheres increased some antioxidants, including L-ascorbic acid (AsA) and polyphenols. In this study, the major factors contributing to the augmentation of antioxidant constituents were investigated. The drought treatment resulted in increased hydrophilic oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) values but not hydrophobic ORAC values. Both activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, SOD, and ascorbate peroxidase, APX) were elevated under drought conditions. RNA-seq analysis revealed 33 upregulated and 115 downregulated differentially expressed genes, and 40 gene ontology enrichment categories. A dehydrin gene was the most significant among the upregulated genes in response to drought stress. Dehydrin protects plant cells from dryness through multiple functions, such as radical scavenging and protection of enzymes. Real-time PCR validated the substantial increase in some dehydrin paralogs with root desiccation. In conclusion, the enhancement of antioxidant levels by drought stress is likely not due to the induction of antioxidant enzyme genes, but due to increased enzymic activities. - This study investigated the effect of the red (R) to far-red (FR) photon flux density ratio on the growth and crocin yields of 64 saffron (Crocus sativus L.) corms that were hydroponically cultivated in closed chambers. The life cycle of saffron can be divided into four stages: formation of the flower buds, flowering, formation of the daughter corms (FD) and development of the daughter corms (DD). During the DD stage, the saffron corms were cultivated under the same environmental conditions except for the light quality, which was applied at an R/FR ratio of 15.8 (FL treatment) or 1.8 (FR treatment). There was no significant difference between treatments in the shoot length, or the maximum diameter, weight and stigma weight of the daughter corms. However, there was a significant difference in the absorbance of crocin solutions. Although the cause of FR-induced increase in crocin was not elucidated, it was presumed that a low R/FR ratio during the DD stage accelerates the translocation of photosynthetic products from the leaves to the corms to generate carbohydrate-enriched corms. - The aim of this study was to clarify how the air temperatures during the light and dark periods affect growth and biosynthesis of the iridoid glycoside asperuloside in Hedyotis diffusa. Ten experimental air temperature treatments were established in a growth chamber during the cultivation period: (light/dark period air temperature) 30/15°C, 20/20°C, 25/20°C, 30/20°C, 35/20°C, 25/25°C, 30/25°C, 35/25°C, 40/25°C and 30/30°C. It was found that the stem length and epigeous dry weight were greatest with the 35/25°C treatment, whereas the leaves near the apical buds of the branches became blackened with the 40/25°C treatment, indicating that 35°C represents the upper air temperature limit during the light period for growth without any physiological disorder. By contrast, the asperuloside concentration was high with an air temperature of 25°C or less during the light period and 20°C or less during the dark period, and was greatest with the 25/20°C and 30/20°C treatments. - Visible and near infrared spectroscopy using chemometrics was applied for nondestructive quality evaluation of lightly heated shell eggs. Apparent yolk viscosity in the lightly, heated shell eggs was targeted in this study because the yolk viscosity is an important quality attribute related to textural preference and usage suitability to several dishes. The developed partial least squares regression model allows estimation of yolk viscosity in eggs with intact shells. Implementing Martens uncertainty test three times reduced the number of wavelengths and improved the model performance. Moreover, the model predicted yolk viscosity in heated shell eggs with nearly the same yolk viscosity but with profoundly different degrees of egg white gelation. Results indicate that the regression coefficients of the model were insensitive to the egg white gelation status, making the model accurate and robust. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. - The feasibility of visible and near infrared (VIS/NIR) transmittance spectroscopy for nondestructive discrimination of healthy and diseased onion bulbs was examined. Rottenness occurring in inner scales that were hard to diagnose by the five human senses was targeted. First, VIS/NIR spectra were acquired for six bulb positions. Subsequently, the degree of rot was measured by visual inspection of vertically cut surface based on our proposed criteria and by weighing of sectioned rotted parts. Our evaluation criteria functioned as an alternative mode of the weighing method. The basal plate of onion bulb had remarkable scattering properties. Therefore, spectral features differed not only by the rot levels but also by positioning the bulb against the sensor setup. The partial least squares regression model developed from the longitudinal position, for which the basal plate did not overlap against the system optical axis, showed the best performance and classified rotted bulbs above level 1 with 98.4% accuracy. - Tipburn is a physiological disorder caused by a calcium (Ca) deficiency that occurs mainly in leafy vegetables, such as lettuce, resulting in a reduced commercial value. To prevent tipburn injury, a sensitive cultivar was tested as an indicator for early symptom detection. An indicator cultivar began to develop tipburn two days earlier than the target cultivar. This allowed for the rescue of the target cultivar by the addition of extra Ca. The yield rate was improved from 4% to 70% with the use of an indicator cultivar in the hydroponic cultures. The top fresh weight of the target cultivar when using an indicator cultivar decreased compared with control plants, but increased compared with negative control plants lacking Ca in the culture. Water contents and root lengths were not affected by the use of an indicator cultivar and additional Ca. These results were consistent with other target cultivars under excess ammonium conditions. This system may be used against tipburn incidence without additional costs and equipment in plant factories. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. - The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of light intensity and light/dark period on the concentration of iridoids in the plant Hedyotis diffusa, which finds use in herbal medicine. To investigate the effect of light conditions, plants were grown in a chamber with factorial treatments comprising three light/dark periods (14/10 h, 19/5 h and 24/0 h) and two light intensities (photosynthetic photon flux density of 142 and 40μmol m-2 s-1). The epigeous dry weight was greatest with the treatments using high light intensity regardless of light period. The concentration of asperuloside (an iridoid) at 24/0 h was noticeably greater than that at 14/10 h or 19/5 h irrespective of light intensity. It was expected that the critical light period for the production of asperuloside would occur between 19 h and 24 h. The content of asperuloside was greatest at 24/0 h under high light intensity. - The purpose of this study is to measure the time variation of nitrate concentration in whole lettuce plants throughout cultivation. Lettuce plants were cultivated in growth chambers under fluorescent or light-emitting diode (LED) lamps. Four different light/dark periods and two ratios of red to blue photon flux density (R/B ratio) were prepared. The cultivation terms utilized were 1 or 2 weeks, and 289 lettuce plants were harvested. The visible-near-infrared absorption spectrum and nitrate concentration were obtained for each sample by spectrometry and the RQflex method, respectively. A regression model for the nitrate concentration was constructed from the spectra, and the correlation coefficient and standard error between the measured and estimated concentrations were 0.77126 and 1100.4 mg L-1, respectively. The spectra of the lettuce plants under the LED lamps were obtained at intervals of 20 min for 14 d. The time variations of the nitrate concentrations in the lettuce plants were obtained by using the regression model. The time variation could be approximated by a concavedown quadratic function. - The purpose of this study was to develop a hyperspectral imaging system that can detect gene recombinant calluses. Drug tolerance genes are commonly used as marker genes, although they may negatively affect the environment. Hence, we aimed to use the genes that code for nitrate reductase (NR) as marker genes. Once the NR genes are introduced into a cell, the recombined genes would show greater nitrate reduction compared with the wild-type genes, making it possible to use the nitrate concentration for discriminating gene recombinant calluses from non-recombinant ones. In the present study, a non-destructive method of measuring the nitrate concentration in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L. 'Orai') calluses was developed to allow for the rapid detection of the gene recombinant calluses. Absorption spectra of 349 calluses (concentration range: 126.0 mg L-1-2697 mg L-1; standard deviation: 646.3 mg L-1) were measured by a hyperspectral camera (wavelength range: 400 nm-1000 nm; resolution: 9 nm). The nitrate concentration of the calluses was measured by the RQ-Flex method. Mathematical models to estimate the nitrate concentration in the calluses from the absorption spectra were developed using the principal component regression (PCR) and partial least squares (PLS) methods, and the correlation coefficient between the measured and estimated nitrate concentration was found to be 0.7363. - Lettuce tipburn is an irreversible physiological disorder caused by calcium deficiency that decreases the crop value. Breeding a tipburn-resistant cultivar is the only causal therapy in many cases. - Plants can synthesize some antioxidants, including L-ascorbic acid (AsA) and polyphenol, in response to environmental stresses. Antioxidants detoxify reactive oxygen species in plants and also aid in human health. In this study, we demonstrate that a novel hydroponic treatment can increase leafy vegetable nutritional quality without retarding growth. Leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa) was grown hydroponically and subjected to rhizosphere drought stress by lowering the water level in the solution tub before harvesting. Appropriate drought stress using this method could increase AsA, polyphenol, and sugar content by 24%, 50%, and 17%, respectively, and decrease nitrate nitrogen content by 18% without reducing yield. Similar effects of drought stress on AsA content were observed in four other plant species. - The purpose of this research is to develop a method for non-destructive measurement of nitrate concentration in vegetable leaves. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was adopted for the measurement. Spinach and komatsuna leaves were examined. Absorption spectra at small areas in the leaves were measured by a NIR spectrometer. The measured areas were cut away from the leaves and their nitrate concentrations were measured by a liquid chromatography analyzer. Mathematical models to estimate the nitrate concentration from the spectra were developed by PCR or PLS methods with a wavelength selection algorithm. - The purpose of this research is to clarify the effects of light quality on growth and nitrate concentration of lettuce. The light quality was defined by R/B ratio, which was ratio of photon flux density of red light to that of blue one. Lettuces were cultivated in a growth chamber with 12 h/12 h of light/dark periods under 6 kinds of R/B ratio as follows; 0, 1, 5, 10, 20 and ∞ (all red). The sum of red and blue photon flux density was kept constant as 230 μmol m-2 s-1 at each R/B ratio. In the cultivation 3 kinds of air temperature (20, 22 and 25 degrees centigrade) and 3 kinds of cultivation term (1, 2 and 3 weeks) were considered as experimental treatments. After the cultivation fresh weight, percentage dry matter and nitrate concentration were measured. The fresh weight at 5, 10 and 20 of R/B ratio was larger than that at other R/B ratios and it was found that the larger the percentage dry matter was, the lower the nitrate concentration was. The correlation coefficient between the percentage dry matter and the nitrate concentration became -0.816. The lowest nitrate concentration and the largest percentage dry matter were realized when the R/B ratio was 1. The results of analysis variance did not show the significant difference among 1, 5, 10 of R/B ratio in relation to the percentage dry matter or the nitrate concentration. Komatsuna leaves were analyzed by hyperspectral reflectance in the range from 607 to 967 nm with a resolution of 9 nm. The reflectance was standardized by a reference plate and was converted to relative reflectance. An algorithm to select the effective wavelength to predict the nitrate concentration was developed in conjunction with partial least squares (PLS) regression and principal components regression (PCR). As for preprocessing methods for the spectra, mean-centre and standard normal variate transformations were examined. Estimation accuracy of the developed models was evaluated by the weighted average of standard error (WSE). The estimation accuracy of the wavelengthselected models was improved and the WSE was smaller than that of the full-spectrum model (41 wavelengths). The calibration model that used 21 wavelengths achieved the best WSE of 1446 ppm with a correlation coefficient of 0.870. The nitrate distribution in Komatsuna leaves were visualized in digital images with a spatial resolution of 2.5 × 10-4 mm/pixel. - In-situ calibration of a mini-yield sensor (mounted on a five-row grain combine) with a non-linear relation to the flow rate was examined. Instead of measuring or controlling the flow rate of grain for calibration purposes, 10 or 12 pairs of grain weights and signal recordings were collected directly in the fields three such data sets (weights and signals) were obtained. Two parameters of the relation were optimized so as to minimize the standard error. The relative error of validation was 3% to 5% with data sets of a wide range of flow rates, whereas it was up to nearly 10% with a data set of low flow rates. - A very small (0.021 kg) grain yield sensor, comprising an octagonal ring load cell and an impact plate was developed for easily mounting onto grain combines used in East Asian countries. During the interval when the sensor is receiving no impact from the grain, the signals are averaged to determine the instantaneous zero-point; thus the sensor compensates for its own long-term drift. The sensor was mounted on a two-row jidatsu combine, and the weight of grain in the grain tank was estimated in the field experiment. The relative error in the validation without compensation was 19%, whereas that with the compensation decreased to 1.5%. - The purpose of this study is to develop an algorithm for real-time measurement of soil clod fineness by image processing. Five sizes of soil clod were prepared by sieving. Surface images of the soil fragments after rotary tillage were captured using a digital video camera under 22 different lighting conditions. Thirty-four image features were measured. The effect of lighting conditions on the variation of image features was clarified by non-parametric analysis of variance. The relation between the clod size and texture features could be expressed in terms of multiple regression equations with coefficients of determination greater than 0.9100. - The purpose of this study is to develop an algorithm for real-time measurement of aggregate size by means of image processing. The tested materials were rock fragments for construction, which were sorted into five size categories by sieving. The average sizes of the categories were 7.14 mm, 14.3 mm, 25.4 mm, 34.9 mm, and 44.5 mm. Surface images of the fragments were captured by a digital video camera under 22 lighting levels. A total of 3960 images were processed by a computer. Thirty-four kinds of image features including color and texture features were measured. The effects of the lighting conditions on the variation in the image features were clarified by non-parametric analysis of variance. Color information, such as the hue and saturation, was very sensitive to variation in illuminance. The relationship between aggregate size and texture features was expressed by multiple regression equations, which showed robust accuracy under the various illuminance values. The coefficient of determination of the regression equations was more than 0.8017. This non-contact real-time measurement shortens the time and eliminates the labor required for measuring aggregate size. - The purpose of this study is to evaluate the capability of image information in obtaining the fineness of soil clods by real time measurement, as defined by mean-weight-diameter (MWD). Thirty-four kinds of image features were measured from the surface images of all the soil samples, which included 26 variations of MWD. The effective features, which showed significant differences among the 26 levels of MWD by analysis of variance, were extracted and used for multiple regression analysis. The proportion of the regression equation for estimating the MWD was over 0.95. - A transportable fine-crusher for crushing chopped wood was developed and tested, with the view of subjecting the processed material (finely crushed material) to subcritical water treatment before ethanol production. The fine-crusher consists of a flail-knife rotor and a rotary sieve of circular or elliptical pores, both rotating on a common shaft. The experimental parameters were the pore size of the sieve, the speeds of the rotor and sieve and the feeding rate and moisture content of the material. The specific energy requirement of the rotor and the indices of the shape of the crushed material (fractal dimension and weighted average diameter) were measured. The pore size of the rotary sieve and the moisture content of the material were identified as significant parameters. The fractal dimension correlated negatively with the weighted average diameter of the crushed material and can be used as a practical indicator. - Using the results of the identification experiments which was explained in the previous report, a transfer function between the photon flux density and the flesh weight of a lettuce, which is a single input-single output model, was derived by means of the system identification method. The ARX, ARMAX and BJ model could express the lettuce growth precisely. The system parameters were derived by the recursive least squared method. It was found that a transition of growth phase could be detected by the time course of the system parameters. - This research is a fundamental analysis to find a universal model of the plant response to variations of cultivation environments. A transfer function between the photon flux density and the flesh weight of a lettuce, which is a single input-single output model, was derived by using the system identification method. In this report the measurement of the identification output was explained. Using an image analysis, a non-contact and a real time measurement of the flesh weight as the identification output was achieved. Then the continuous measurement with a constant sampling period was realized. - This research is a fundamental analysis of a growth monitoring method for plant production control. Two varieties of lettuce, Telme lettuce and Tango lettuce, were made into the object in this research. The number of days after planting of the lettuce was determined by image analysis and the neural network. For Telme lettuce, the 10th, 20th and 30th days after planting were set as the target dates to note. For Tango lettuce, the 7th, 14th and 21st days were fixed as objectives. In the previous analysis, the number of days was recognized by linear discriminant analysis. The error rate of the recognition by the linear method was 2.5% for Telme lettuce and 20% for Tango lettuce. The Tango lettuce showed a large individual difference in the image features. Thus, the features were distributed widely in the feature space and there were many intersections among the three groups. It was difficult to separate the space into three parts by the discriminant planes. Therefore, the non-linear method was adopted. The accuracy of the discrimination was improved by the neural network. The error rate decreased down to 1.00% for Telme lettuce and 14.7% for Tango lettuce. - The novel measurement system for soil clod fineness developed by this research was installed in a tractor, with real-time measurement of soil surface irregularity conducted during rotary tillage operation. After real-time measurement, the irregularity of the tilled lane was measured by a stationary measurement system, and the calculated soil clod fineness was compared with that from real-time measurement. To clarify the influence of vibration on the system installation mechanism and on laser displacement sensor output, the vibration acceleration during tillage was also measured. - This research was conducted to develop an algorithm to recognize the number of days after planting of lettuce in a plant factory. Speaking Plant Approach (SPA) has been recognized in a growth control system. Growth information should be utilized actively for environmental control. An instrumentation that can acquire the growth information is necessary to incorporate the SPA into the growth control system. This research is a fundamental analysis for a growth monitoring method. Two varieties of lettuces, the Telme lettuce and the Tango lettuce, were examined. Digital images of the lettuces were photographed by a digital still camera. Several image features, such as the top projected leaf area, the color attributes and the texture features, were calculated using an image processing algorithm. Linear discriminant analysis was adopted for the image features. This research focused on three dates in a growth term. As for the Telme lettuce, the 10th, 20th and 30th days after planting were set as the target dates to note. For the Tango lettuce, the 7th, 14th and 21st days were fixed as objectives. The developed algorithm showed a 2.5% error rate for the Telme lettuce and 20% for the Tango lettuce. Therefore, this recognition method could be utilized for a growth diagnosis of the Telme lettuce. - The objective of this study is to develop a tilled soil clod fineness measurement method that uses non-contact and non-distractive technique. A laser displacement sensor was adopted as a sensing device, which was installed to an irregularity measuring system stationary set up for this study. We calculated an index of soil clod fineness from measured irregularity data. To obtain a relationship between laser displacement sensor outputs and tilled clod size, we did a calibration experiment in the laboratory. - The Dielectric Characteristics of Agricultural Land for On-Site and Real Time MeasurementGenerally, the electrochemical characteristic of the agricultural land or soil is investigated by the electric conductivity (EC). But, EC method is not suitable for real time measurement because of the procedure for preparation and the contact resistance of sensors. In this study, the impedance method is applied to measure the dielectric characteristics of agricultural land for the real time, on-site analysis of soil and its ingredients in the future. Four soil models consisting of clay, sand, organic matter, and their mixture were analysed by LCR meter. The experimental terms were the equivalent resistance and capacitance of model with sweeping the frequency of exciter. The range of frequency was from 100Hz to 2MHz. - The purpose of this study is to develop a soybean sorting system capable of detecting distorted soybean and of detecting the number and kinds of the beans in the pod. Top view of the soybeans was used for image processing. The method of using the centroid radius with peak adjustment was contrived for detecting the long axis, which comprises stem and tip. The centroid displacement was used for the parameters to detect the distorted soybeans. The relationship between the long and short axes of the soybean is used to determine the number of beans. - The objective of the research is to develop an automatic discrimination system for detecting the damaged black soybeans (Tanbaguro). Algorithms to discriminate the wrinkle soybean from the whole bean were developed by combining with an image analysis. In the previous report the linear discriminant function discriminated the wrinle bean with the error of 18.0%. Thus it was necessary to improve the accuracy of the algorithm by using nonlinear discriminant function. By using measured data in relation to environmental factors, such as temperature, humidity, radiant flux density and carbon dioxide concentration in the plant factory, a time course of lettuce fresh weight was estimated by multiple regression analysis. A 95% prediction interval of the time course of fresh weight was determined. This interval indicates an effective range in which the fresh weight could be estimated when future observations of the environmental factors, which are similar to the above measured data, are substituted into the multiple regression equation.
The effective environmental factors for estimate of lettuce growth were extracted by principle component analysis. Temperatures in day and night periods, carbon dioxide concentration and days after transplanting were found to be important for estimate of lettuce growth.
A principle component analysis determined which environmental factor should be carefully more controlled. - Recognition of wrinkle black soybean by machine visionIt is useful to use a machine vision in order to measure the outside shape and the surface texture of an object. This research is a fundamental study for a judgment of outside quality for the black soybean and objective is to develop an algorithm for the judgment by using the machine vision. In this report, a kind of damaged black soybean, that is a wrinkle soybean, was focused on the subject for the judgment. The wrinkle part of the black soybean was extracted by the two dimensional Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method. After processing the original image by FFT, a two dimensional power spectrum was obtained and was filtered out with two range of frequency from 10 to 20 (cycle/pixel) or from 30 to 40 (cycle/pixel). The filtered power spectrum was processed by inverse FFT and then the wrinkle part was extracted. There was a remarkable difference between the processed image of the wrinkle and whole soybeans. - Measurement of Forces Acting on 4WD-4WS Tractor Tires During Steady-State Circular Turning in a Rice FieldThree directional forces on tractor tires, the normal forces, lateral forces and thrusts, were measured during steady-state circular turning in a rice field. The tested tractors were a four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering (4WD-4WS) and a four-wheel drive, two-wheel steering (4WD-2WS) tractor. The measured forces were analyzed with the measured slip, side slip angle and the turning radius of the tractor center of gravity. The results were compared with the results derived from the same experiments on a paved road. It was then presented that a clear, tight corner braking phenomenon occurred in the case of the 2WS tractor, in spite of its turning radius being larger than that of the 4WS tractor. The lateral forces on the tires did not act to the inside of the turn either on the paved road or the rice field. Through analysis, it became clear that the 4WS system could supply a smoother and more efficient turn than the 2WS system. These results were measured during steady-state circular turning, in which a fixed steering wheel angle and a constant running speed were kept, on a paved road. The measurement was also done for a four-wheel drive and two-wheel steering (4WD-2WS) state, disconnecting a rear steering Link and fixing the steering angles of the rear tires of the 4WD-4WS tractor to zero. Through the analysis of the results, some turning characteristics of the 4WD-4WS tractor were obtained. A tight corner braking phenomenon was clearly found in the case of 2WS. The 4WS system supplied more efficient turning than the 2WS system. - Three Dimensional Stress Distributions on a Tire-Sand Contact SurfaceUsing a forced-slippage test apparatus and a small three-axial force transducer attached to a tire surface, the distributions of normal, longitudinal and lateral stresses along the tire-soil contact area were precisely, simultaneously and independently measured on a standard sand in the laboratory and processed by a personal computer. - Necessity of Small Class Education : In view of Graduation Thesis InstructionContinuous instruction of Graduate thesis for two years in department of Intelligent Mechanics gave some important hints to develop an education for students under third grade. A self-evaluation for graduation thesis was attempted. Followings are found be focused points to improve the education, by analyzing results of the self-evaluation. (1) What are resources to progress with an issue searching and thinking ability or a literacy? (2) Reeducation of mathematics, physics and English. (3) Necessity of small class education. (4) Necessity of four years systematic education to make the above points effective. These focussed points conduted a future educational vision, that is "raising a issue understanding ability and a sense of reponsibility". The vision was introduced into a lecture "Exercises of Intelligent Mechanics I, II" and some resources were adopted and achieved in the lectures. A class for the lecture consists of about twenty students. This scale is sufficient to call this class "small class" in our department which about one hundred students belong to in each grade. The subjects lectured in the class were, a. What do you learn in this university? b. Fundamental mathematics and physics. The first subject was selected to train the issue searching and thinking ability or a literacy. The other one was a supplementary tuition so as to help to understand more applied subjects. An avarage evaluation scores marked by students for this lecture in three years got rather high. Accordingly this small class lecture seems to be effective for students. These investigation results indicate the importance of the small class education. However, this educational method needs many teachers. It is impossible to achieve the small class education for all subject. Thus, a revision of curriculum is necessary to take the education method in a four years systematic education.
