- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Waseda University, Apr. 2018 - Mar. 2021, CoinvestigatorDiscount rate and international environmental agreement in climate changeThe choice of discount rate critically affects the climate change policy because the emissions of greenhouse gases influence the global climate system over thousands of years and a slight difference in discount rates makes a huge difference in the present values of the benefits and costs in the far future. We propose a social discount rate that is intergenerationally justifiable from procedural fairness. We investigate the properties of the discount rate with some parametric models.
Another crucial challenge against climate change in social sciences is understanding the efforts for international coordination and how to realize the desired outcome. This study formulates the international environmental negotiation as an asymmetric noncooperative differential game. We investigated the properties of the Markov perfect Nash equilibrium, including the stability of the steady states and the relation with discount rates, among others. We also addressed the existence of a solution. - Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kobe University, Apr. 2016 - Mar. 2021, CoinvestigatorHuman Capital and Economic GrowthThe objective of this study is to understand the endogenous factors of economic growth that capture economic growth from various perspectives, with humancapital accumulation as the keyword. We will theoretically analyze the role of human capital in an economic growth model and conduct empirical research on the contribution of educational investment, including even school and home education.Specifically, we will examine a paper on the geese pattern theory of economic growth proposed by Akamatsu (1956) (newly industrializing countries follow advanced countries in economic development, just as geese fly in flocks in the sky); in school education, we will examine the relationship between the number of hours of classes in science and mathematics subjects and the number of patent applications and renewals in Japan; and in individual Regarding heterogeneity, we presented a paper on individual differences in thinking and behavior by measuring brain activity.

Group-A has constructed various static trade models incorporating the relation between the time zone differences and the shift-working as well as the characteristics of trade in services. Group-B has constructed various dynamic trade models of foreign direct investment and international factor movements incorporating the notions of trade in tasks and task decompositions. Group-C has considered and analyzed how the relationship between the shift-working due to time zone differences and the market/home production sectors could affect the properties of the long-run stationary equilibria.

It is to propose what corporate governance should be. The research results are large and can be summarized in the following three points. (1) There are enormous amounts of Kanebo materials, and most of them are handwritten materials, so we developed a process to digitize and check. (2) It became possible to search by converting the data in text form into a database. (3) Based on the data on the decision making, such as factory data and the general meeting of shareholders, the decision making mechanism of Kanebo's management became clear. These valuable materials and analysis results were widely published on the web.

In our theoretical analysis, we found that the collapses of bubbles in different countries are closely related. Furthermore, in the empirical and simulation studies on monetary and fiscal policy, we showed how “risk” as a macroeconomic variable reacts to monetary policy, and evaluated the Bank of Japan’s policy responses after the collapse of the bubble economy in the early 1990s and the global financial crisis in 2008.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Osaka University, Apr. 2015 - Mar. 2020, CoinvestigatorMarket intermediation and economic growthPrevious studies in economic growth have been considering the situation in which producing firms and households can trade goods and labor directly and did not explicitly introduce intermediate agents who have essential roles in actual market transactions. However, recent innovations in information technology and the rise of new transaction technologies suggest that improved market mediation could affect economic growth or possibly give rise to a bubble-like phenomenon. In this project, three research institutes in Japan collaborated with Tinbergen Institute in Netherland to conduct related research.

We show that opening trade destabilizes the autarkic steady state in the sense that under free trade the welfare level of each country in the long run depends not only on economic fundamentals in each country, but also on households' expectations.

Through the Tokugawa period (1603-1867), the Shogunate often intervened the market to keep the rice price stable, based on his absolute authority. We find three phases of the market interventions during the period from the mid-18th to the early 19th century. First, the Shogunate conducted the large-sized intervention in the way ignoring the market participants, but had to abandon it. Second, in the wake of this failure, the Shogunate conducted small-sized interventions in the way just following the arguments of the market participants, which were not so effective. Finally, the Shogunate achieved the policy goal by the commitment with large-sized interventions as one of the communication tools to convey his intention to the market participants.

We show that with non-homothetic preferences, the distribution of income affects the demand for each of the factors of production, and hence it affects not only the speed of convergence to the steady state, but also the total wealth in the long run. Also, we find that the capital intensity ranking of luxury and necessity decides the relationship between income inequality and the economic growth.

With non-homothetic preferences, we show the possibility that main results of the models drastically change when one good is inferior. Also, with endogenous time preferences, we have several new findings on the relationship between income inequality and economic growth that would be useful.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Waseda University, 01 Apr. 2011 - 31 Mar. 2016Application of nonlinear equilibrium dynamics to global environmental issuesGlobal environmental issues such as the global warming and the biodiversity loss have serious long-term consequences and several other novel features. Using nonlinear economic dynamics models incorporating those features, we analyzed the interaction between the society and the issues. The models are: dynamic game model with an environmental asset, non-concave optimal growth model, endogenous growth model with large and unpredictable shocks, and a social planner model for agents with non-exponential discounting. From them we have several new results as shown in “Research Performance” below. Some of them are found in our papers published in international journals. We also surveyed some related research issues that are recently extensively studied. They include the axiomatic approaches to intergenerational equity and the declining discount rate for social cost/benefit analysis. Our results help to understand why and when we choose an unsustainable path and to consider how to avoid it.

In addition, we considered the characteristics of business cycles in emerging economies in Asia, and analyzed the propagation mechanisms of exchange rate adjustments, expansionary monetary policy, and expansionary fiscal policy during the Korekiyo Takahashi period. As theoretical research, we obtained a condition for the nonexistence of bubbles, and modified a standard network model of contagion to analyze situations in which banks hold external risky assets.

The former group has elucidated two important time-zone-related factors (i.e., the time-reduction effect and the day-night reversal effect) that determine the structure of international trade and investigated how they affect such issues as the reduction in shift working, the domestic income distribution, the possession of foreign affiliates by multinationals, offshoring of core tasks and peripheral tasks, international income inequalities, incentives for the formation of FTAs, and so forth. The latter group has elucidated some fundamental properties of the Bellman equation in dynamic programming and investigated such issues as the effects of fiscal policies, international income transfers, and capital movements in dynamic trade models, and the indeterminacy of dynamic equilibrium paths, and so forth.

A major theoretical contribution is to demonstrate that even if the market is well functioning, it is natural that an extreme crisis occurs once in a while due to the interaction between innovation and market quality and that the recovery process after a crisis can be crucially influenced by the market infrastructure formed during and soon after the crisis. We have also obtained several important empirical results by building original data. The main results include the following: Japanese unconventional monetary policy after the financial crisis may have created strong noises that reduced financial market quality and delayed the recovery. It is important to raise the quality of insurance markets for natural disasters, including earthquakes, in order to equalize social costs of potential disasters across various regions.

Discrete choice problems are important since many products in reality are indivisible. In this research, it has been shown that at the individual level, discrete choice problems result in complex dynamics. A more precise statement of this result is as follows: Under quite general conditions, the optimal paths of deterministic infinite-horizon discrete-choice problems almost never converge to a steady state or a cycle. In terms of techniques, in stead of dynamic programming, I have employed the approach of viewing an infinite horizon optimization problem as an optimization problem in an infinite dimensional space. By comparing the state space and the space of optimal paths, I have shown that optimal paths almost always exhibit complex dynamics. I am in the process of preparing a paper based on the above result for publication in a journal.
