- Due to the ever-increasing amount of data collected and the requirements for the rapid and reliable exchange of information across many interconnected communication devices, land-based communications networks are experiencing continuous progress and improvement of existing infrastructures. However, maritime communications are still characterized by slow communication speeds and limited communication capacity, despite a similar trend of increasing demand for information exchange. These limitations are particularly evident in digital data exchange, which is still limited to relatively slow and expensive narrowband satellite transmission. Furthermore, with the increasing digitalization of ships and introducing the sustainable concept of autonomous ship operation, large amounts of collected data need to be transmitted in real-time to enable remote voyage monitoring and control, putting additional pressure on the already strained means of maritime communications. In this paper, an adaptive shipboard data compression method based on differential binary encoding is proposed for real-time maritime data transmission. The proposed approach is verified on the actual data collected on board a training ship equipped with the latest data acquisition system. The obtained results show that the proposed data encoding method efficiently reduces the transmitted data size to an average of 3.4% of the original shipboard data, thus significantly reducing the required data transmission rate. Moreover, the proposed method outperforms several other tested competing methods for shipboard data encoding by up to 69.6% in terms of compression efficiency. Therefore, this study suggests that the proposed data compression approach can be a viable and efficient solution for transmitting large amounts of digital shipboard data in sustainable maritime real-time communications.MDPI AG, Jul. 2021, Sustainability, 13(15) (15), 8264 - 8264, English[Refereed][Invited]Scientific journal
- The real-life signals captured by different measurement systems (such as modern maritime transport characterized by challenging and varying operating conditions) are often subject to various types of noise and other external factors in the data collection and transmission processes. Therefore, the filtering algorithms are required to reduce the noise level in measured signals, thus enabling more efficient extraction of useful information. This paper proposes a locally-adaptive filtering algorithm based on the radial basis function (RBF) kernel smoother with variable width. The kernel width is calculated using the asymmetrical combined-window relative intersection of confidence intervals (RICI) algorithm, whose parameters are adjusted by applying the particle swarm optimization (PSO) based procedure. The proposed RBF-RICI algorithm’s filtering performances are analyzed on several simulated, synthetic noisy signals, showing its efficiency in noise suppression and filtering error reduction. Moreover, compared to the competing filtering algorithms, the proposed algorithm provides better or competitive filtering performance in most considered test cases. Finally, the proposed algorithm is applied to the noisy measured maritime data, proving to be a possible solution for a successful practical application in data filtering in maritime transport and other sectors.Last, MDPI AG, Apr. 2021, Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, 9(4) (4), 439 - 439, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

This study investigates spatial pattern of piracy activity using GIS based-hazard map. Hazard map is a useful tool for spatial planning and providing an image of the most vulnerable areas. The authors have focused attention on distribution of piracy incidents in South East Asia, the hazard map by analyzing directional distribution and kernel density estimation from each piracy location is created for maritime security. Nowadays, the number of AIS (Automatic Identification System)-equipped ships is increasing under the international convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The AIS is automatically providing navigation information to other ships and coastal authorities to improve the maritime safety. We hope that an analyzing AIS data is also an effective solution for investigating ship accident against illegal activity. - The balancing between safety and efficiency becomes imminent more than ever. It is caused by the global economic downturn, the steep rise of fuel oil price, etc. Shipping companies already installed the weather routing service for their controlled ships. However, it is necessary to consider the influence of ship motions more theoretically. Here, onboard measurements have been implemented for an ocean going bulk carrier to know relations between ship motions and other related parameters. - AIS has not spread through almost all small vessels now. Since a small vessel hides in the shadow of a breakwater or a wave easily and it is hard to catch it by a radar, the spread of AIS is desired. In this paper, the analysis and the questionnaire of data perform consideration about the practicality of Class B AIS and spread which are AIS for vessels without duty. Our investigation showed that the degree and notability of the spread of AIS in a small vessel were very low. In a small vessel, they are common knowledge and low-pricing about AIS spread. It is important to advertize the validity of AIS in each organization concerned. Moreover, it is necessary to advance popularisation by holding down a price.Japan Institute of Navigation, 2012, The Journal of Japan Institute of Navigation, 127, 133 - 140, Japanese

- External forces of marine weather, such as waves, currents and wind flows, affect the course and speed of a ship under way. As a result, marine accidents, such as collisions or grounding, may occur, particularly in inshore areas. On coasts where earthquakes and tsunamis occur frequently, such as the Japanese coast, a tsunami that advances into a bay from the open sea is influenced by the submarine topography. It grows into a huge wave that could cause tremendous damage to ships under way and at anchorage. A massive earthquake occurred in the Tohoku and Kanto regions of Japan on 11 March 2011. In response, a tsunami alert, a tsunami warning and an advisory were issued for the entire Pacific coast region. This research investigates the evacuation behaviour of ships by AIS data in Tokyo bay and Osaka bay after the tsunami warning was issued. The unusual behaviour observed was attributed to the emergency evacuation of ships. - For the safety navigation of the ship, it is necessary for navigator to understand a surrounding situation that changes promptly and they must judge proper ship handling with various information. Recently, it is general to use a radar ARPA (Automatic Radar Plotting Aids) for this purpose. To practice usage of radar system effectively, radar simulator have been developed and utilized for training. In general, process to generate training scenario is not so simple and is time-consuming task. We propose the radar simulator as a PC software which uses the recorded AIS data for surrounding ship's data, and the scenario can be made automatically from actual data. So the user can do training anytime anywhere. To improve the efficiency of training, we introduce some technique to generate more realistic display image of ships and land area. - AIS (Universal shipborne Automatic Identification System) has been introduced, and AIS instruments are now widely installed onboard certain ships which are obliged by SOLAS. AIS target data should be provided to deck officers with relevant instruments that can be display them on chart, and they can use the data effectively for decision making of ship navigation. However, the navigation instruments like radar or ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) which has such function of overlay display of target data on chart are so expensive and can be used in limited large scale vessels. So, we propose more inexpensive system which has similar functions about AIS target display. Moreover, AIS can output not only other ship's target data but also own ship's sailing data periodically with digital format i.e. NMEA format, and they are enough to achieve electronic navigation. In this paper, we show a simple design of navigation system using AIS data, and also show a prototype system on actual merchant vessel.Lead, Japan Institute of Navigation, Mar. 2011, Journal of Japan Institute of Navigation, 第124号・79-86, 79 - 86, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Nowadays, navigation systems like ECDIS became popular on board, so the target data acquired by ARPA and AIS are widely used in decision making for safe navigation. Because it is important for users to get the information easily and accurately, display method on ENC image of navigation system should be designed carefully. Although the standard of notation to display target information have been established, it seems that there are some issues to discuss, especially in user-friendliness. In this paper, we propose more efficient notation to display target data on navigation system in general.Lead, Japan Institute of Navigation, Sep. 2008, THE JOURNAL OF JAPAN INSTITUTE OF NAVIGATION, 第119号, 75 - 82, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal
- Nowadays, data storage methods have been gone in the direction of integration with the internet structure. One of the most popularized data storage technologies is relational database. In the contrast, along with the coming of Business to Business (B2B) generation, the tendency of using Entensible Markup Language (XML) document as data exchange format recently becomes more and more evident. XML data model could be a better or suitable solution for the maritime field because ships offshore are not able to access or update database through the internet in real time. Compared with relational database, XML has the semantic advantage. This characteristic allows it to communicate with servers and to achieve the objective of automatic operations. On the other hand, because XML is built in pure text format, compared with the binary structure of database, XML takes more data storage space and has obvious backward query efficiency. In our research, in order to reduce the disadvantage of XML essence, the data storage structure for ship data modeling is investigated from query efficiency view and we apply this data model on the container operation as a sample to verify the improvement of query efficiency.Japan Institute of Navigation, Sep. 2008, THE JOURNAL OF JAPAN INSTITUTE OF NAVIGATION, 第119号, 83 - 89, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- The situation of the bottom fouling of a ship is not the same in an individual ship according to lapsed days after dry docking, the condition of ship services and mooring environment etc. And the quantification of the degree of bottom fouling are assumed to be difficult. The degree of the bottom fouling are often judged from an indirect viewpoint such as decrease of ship speed, increase of main engine output and fuel consumption. To presume an increase of the friction drag because of the bottom fouling, the short stopping experiments are designed and have been executed by Training Ship Fukae-maru, the graduate school of maritime sciences, Kobe University. It is possible to experiment in a short time of about 30 minutes and wide sea room is not needed to execution in case of Fukae-maru. The authors propose this experimental maneuver. Then the methods of analysis and the result of analysis at present stage are described.Last, Japan Institute of Navigation, Mar. 2008, 日本航海学会論文集, 第118号, pp.135-143, 135 - 143, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal
- Along with the appearance of distributed concept, traditional centralized management framework has been transferred to distributed management framework, especially in electronic commerce field. In the technical implementation level, because relational database technology is already very mature and easy to be implemented in distributed construction, so nowadays electronic business enterprises mostly use relational database management system (RDBMS) to store and manage their data. Although, in fleet management, because of ships cannot access to centric database through general internet construction when they are offshore, the data belong to ships themselves have the necessity of independent self-management. But RDBMS cannot completely satisfy this objective because it is not easy to be divided. In this paper, we propose to use Extensible Markup Language (XML) to construct ship data management model, so then it could be applied for fleet management and future port administration. The data model can be composed of many kinds of information, such as hardware (ship name, ship type, net tonnage, etc), software (schedule, service, passenger, etc) and freight (freight kind, freight charge, deliver country, etc). Multi-level data model can provide the ability for fleet inter-manageinent and communicating function to government related departments for port administration.Japan Institute of Navigation, Mar. 2008, 日本航海学会論文集, 第118号, pp.65-72, 65 - 72, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- This paper deals with the simulation of navigation based on the tidal current for the purpose of the optimum routing of a small vessel which sails in the relatively narrow sea area such as the bay. In former part of this paper, the computer simulation of tidal currents of Osaka Bay was explained. The tidal current was calculated using M2 tide by numerical model of POM. In latter parts of one, the simulation of navigation in the bay was carried out. The effects of tidal currents to navigation by a small vessel were examined. As results, it was recognized that effects of tidal currents to navigation are very large and that the tidal simulation for the weather routing of a small vessel is very effective.Japan Institute of Navigation, Mar. 2007, THE JOURNAL OF JAPAN INSTITUTE OF NAVIGATION, THE 第116号, pp.61-67, 61 - 67, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal
- To secure a safe anchor riding under stormy weather, the captain judges to use both bower anchors for reinforce the holding power or judges to use a single anchor with dropping another bower as a short-scope anchor. If the swing control of a ship can be done, the power of wind pressure can be reduced. Then, the ship will maintain a safe anchor riding. Training ship Fukae-maru, the faculty of maritime sciences Kobe University, adopts CPP (Controllable Pitch Propeller) as a propulsion system. So, she can control the propeller thrust, ahead and astern, easily. Various experiments about the swing control of a ship were done by using astern thrust of it. As a result of the analysis, the suitable astern thrust was effective on the swing control of a ship because of the reduction of swing room and wind pressure. The authors are expecting that this analytical result will be useful as one example concerning swing control of a CPP ship under stormy weather.Last, Japan Institute of Navigation, Mar. 2007, THE JOURNAL of JAPAN INSTITUTE of NAVIGATION, No.116, pp.145-151, 145 - 151, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal
- Ship weather routing system for transoceanic vessels has been studied for many years to achieve an economic and safe navigation. However, little is known about that for coastal sailing vessels. The purpose of this research is to develop a weather routing system for small vessels. We call it numerical navigation system. This paper mainly discusses one of its important functions: the ability for a vessel to sailing on the planned route as precisely as possible. First, the outline of the numerical navigation system is introduced, and then a navigation simulation based on MMG mathematical model is revealed. Finally, on-board experiments are conducted and compared with the navigation simulation. The results confirm that the estimation accuracy of ship's course for the weather routing system is satisfactory.Last, Japan Institute of Navigation, Sep. 2006, THE JOURNAL OF JAPAN INSTITUTE OF NAVIGATION, 第115号, pp.51-57, 51 - 57, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Training ship Fukae maru of the Faculty of Maritime Sciences, Kobe University encountered the Typhoon No.16 (CHABA) at Ikeda-bay of Syodo-sima in Seto inland sea on August 30, 2004. At that time, she evaded the crisis of dragging anchor twice. And the maximum instantaneous wind speed 61 meters were observed through this violent stormy weather. However, it is not easy to detect accurately the ship yawing, swinging room and anchor dragging on a chart due to the limitation of reduced scale of a chart. So far, anchor dragging or threat of anchor dragging is often judged by anchoring condition such as abnormal ship yawing and abnormal relative wind direction. Our developing "Monitor System for Anchor Riding" detected the situation of the yawing movement of a ship in detail before and after dragging anchor. Then, the anchoring data that had been recorded with this system was analyzed and reproduced. The authors are expecting that this analytical result in high accuracy will be useful as one example concerning anchor dragging phenomenon in real ship under stormy weather.Last, Japan Institute of Navigation, Mar. 2006, THE JOURNAL of JAPAN INSTITUTE of NAVIGATION, 第114号・pp.119-125, 119 - 125, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

We have proposed a method to make a supporting system for generation of course lines. We believe that the method has the advantage of flexibility over the usual method of the retrieval of the recorded course lines. In this paper, we improve the efficiency of search algorithm, increase the numbers of Course parts, and combine the graphic user interface. The search algorithm is improved by get rid of unreasonable parts and courses within the search process, the number of parts is 3 times over than before, the GUI is more friendly to use, newly-increased map display ability allow user to zoom the map to the best look for himself. - Nowadays, progress is remarkable in the field of nautical instruments, such as GPS and others, and which can be utilized to acquire the precise ship position. We are developing a monitoring system for riding at anchor, and the data is taken from the modern electronic instruments aboard T.S. FUKAE MARU. At Kobe University we operated this monitoring system for more than 2 years, and during actual voyage conditions. It was used for the prediction and warning of-anchor dragging. When we observed on monitoring screens, the ship's motion in terms of the anchoring, our new system found not only the regular swinging of the ship, but also some irregular swinging. In order to help the officer of the watch to judge the anchoring status, we analyzed the ship's motion during 47 anchorings of T.S. FUKAE MARU. As a result, we can classify three patterns of swinging; 'Regular swinging', 'Circular movement focused on the bow' and 'Bulbous = Irregular concentrated movement'. The details of this research, with some discussion included, are given in this paper.Lead, Japan Institute of Navigation, Mar. 2005, THE JOURNAL OF JAPAN INSTITUTE OF NAVIGATION, 第112号,pp.323-329, 323 - 329, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Under the strong wind, in general, duty officer on anchor watch confirms the anchor riding by fixing ship position on a chart of the maximum reduced scale. Then, by the situation, the anchor cable is extended further or drop down another bower to keep safe anchor riding based on the provided security standard of a ship. However, it is not easy to detect accurately the ship yawing and swinging room and anchor dragging on a chart from the reason for the limitation of reduced scale of a chart. - T.S. Fukae-maru has 100Mbps FDDI network (Ship's LAN for short). IP network is running on the Ship's LAN. In T.S. Fukae-maru, many kinds of sensor that measures various kinds of data are connected to the Ship's LAN through sequencers. It is possible to get these measured data with IP communication. Using this feature, authors design the server program that receives the data from sequencers periodically, and transfers the data on user request. A client program sends a request to the server program, and displays/processes the data that is received from the server program. These two programs are executed as different processes. The IP protocol is utilized in the communication between both processes. Authors propose that data acquisition/transfer system is composed with such server-client model. The computers require just reguler connection to the network through the interface like Ethernet but any other special connection to the measuring devices. By connecting the computer to the Ship's LAN, users are able to utilize data in various places in T.S. Fukae-maru. - Currently ship navigators must manually pick up necessary navigational information from many kinds of printed matters. It is very hard and headachy work for them to retrieve the useful information on board. In this paper, we propose an automatic retrieval system for sailing directions, which is composed of a general-purpose database, a retrieval engine and a user-friendly interface. When the user inputs a navigational route in terms of the departure port, altering points and arrival port on the chart shown on their workstation's graphic display by its mouse pointer device, the system can retrieve relevant landmarks for the route. The database of sailing directions for our retrieval system currently contains only data for 'Seto Inland Sea.' When the user selects a landmark of the landmark list on the graphic display, the system can retrieve and show the contents about the selected landmark. Our system can save time considerably compared with manual operation. Moreover, it retrieves relevant navigational information from the database without any omissions.Japan Institute of Navigation, Sep. 2001, 日本航海学会論文集, 105(105号) (105号), pp.103 - 109, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal
- This paper presents a methodology for retrieving sailing guides from a web-based sailing direction database. The basic idea is to build and utilize an index table, which relates the keywords extracted from the sailing direction to the URL's of the relevant pages. The topics covered in this paper spread from the basics about database design such as data modelling to the considerations for the search engine of the retrieval system. The major issues discussed include : 1. how to utilize the existing HTML framework with no modification ; 2. how to simplify and automate the procedures for data recording and updating ; and 3. how to design the search engine so that the fast and accurate retrieval of relevant pages could be achieved. Our experimental results show that with the use of the index table, the retrieval time has been considerably shortened.Lead, Japan Institute of Navigation, Sep. 2001, THE JOURNALOF JAPAN INSTITUTE OF NAVIGATION, 第105号,pp.119-126, 119 - 126, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Navigation information is necessary for safe and efficient ship handling. Ship navigators must pick up manually necessary navigation information from a vast amount of them. In this paper, we propose automatic retrieval systems for Japanese nautical charts and sailing directions using an engineering work station (EWS), and develop its prototype. These systems are composed of general purpose database, unified retrieval algorithm and user-friendly interface. The database of nautical charts retrieval system is composed nautical charts attribute data of 781 sheets of Japanese nautical charts in Japan adjacent waters. When the system operator inputs main points of departure, arrival and altering points on the general chart in the EWS's graphic display by its mouse pointer device, the system retrieves necessary charts for the inputted course line. The database for sailing direction retrieval system is composed of 'Seto Inland Sea' sailing direction. The mentioned items of sailing direction are classified to 2,000 areas and items. When the system operator selects the item of operation menus in the graphic display, the system can retrieve and show the necessary information of the sailing direction in the graphic display. When the operators use these systems, they can reduce the operation time compared with manual operation. Of course, they can get necessary navigation information from the database without omission. 94(94) (94), 249 - 255, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- In an experimental automatic navigation system, an ARPA is currently employed as a sensor to obtain navigation information about ships in the radar visibility. Consequently the ARPA is expected to have an equivalent capability to ship operator's eyesight. Some researchers are engaged in developing such an advanced ARPA. However, the advanced ARPA alone can not assure high reliability, simply because it gives us only a single kind of sensor information. From this point of view, we have focused on image understanding techniques for mechanization of ship operator's eyesight, and studied an extraction of navigation information from an image of a ship at sea. In last paper, we described 1) a derivation of theoretical equations for calculating the distance between a target and an own ship using a position of a horizon and 2) a verification of their efficiency with Digitizer Distance Measuring System (OMS). As the next step in developing a practical system, we have implemented semiautomatic distance measuring system, Mouse Distance Measuring System (MOMS). MOMS consists of an engineering workstation (EWS) and an image scanner as the hardware. An input image is fed into the EWS by the scanner and processed for edge detection, binarization and thinning. The coordinates (x, y) of important points are, then, extracted from the processed image on the display by clicking the mouse. In this paper, we explain MOMS in detail and that its accuracy is enough in some practical situations. 85(85) (85), 143 - 151, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- A Swing Control Experiment of a Ship at Anchoring under Stormy Weather(MARITIME STUDIES, AND SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING)Some powerful typhoons are approaching and hitting directly to mainland of Japan every year. Before and after typhoon passing, miserable and extensive marine disasters that related to anchoring have occurred in the past. To secure a safe anchor riding under stormy weather, the captain judges to use both bower anchors for reinforce the holding power or judges to use a single anchor with dropping another bower as a short-scope anchor. If the swing control of a ship can be done, the wind pressure can be reduced. Then, the ship will maintain a safe anchor riding. Training ship Fukae-maru, the graduate school of maritime sciences, Kobe University, adopts CPP (Controllable Pitch Propeller) as a propulsion system. So, she can control the propeller thrust, ahead and astern, easily. Various experiments using propeller thrust to control the ship swing were done. As a result of the analysis, the suitable astern thrust was effective to control the swing because of the reduction of swing room and wind pressure. The authors are expecting that this analytical result will be useful as one example to control the swing of a CPP ship under stormy weather.Kobe University, Jul. 2008, Review of the Faculty of Maritime Sciences, Kobe University, 5, 73 - 83, Japanese

Training ship Fukae-maru of the Faculty of Maritime Sciences, Kobe University encountered the Typhoon No.16 (200416 CHABA) at Ikeda-bay of Syodo-sima in Seto inland sea on August 30, 2004. At that time, she evaded the crisis of dragging anchor twice. And the maximum instantaneous wind speed 61 meters were observed through this violent stormy weather. Our developing "Monitor System for Anchor Riding" detected the situation of the yawing movement of a ship in detail before and after dragging anchor. Then, the anchoring data that had been recorded with this system was analyzed and reproduced. The authors are expecting that this analytical result in high accuracy will be useful as one example concerning anchor dragging phenomenon in real ship under stormy weather.Kobe University, Jul. 2006, REVIEW OF THE FACULTY OF MARITIME SCIENCES, KOBE UNIVERSITY, 第3号・pp.139-147, 139 - 147, JapaneseIntroduction scientific journal

- Retrieval System for Static Navigational Information by Ship's Course LinesNavigational information is necessary for safe and efficient ship handling. Currently ship navigators must manually pick up necessary navigational information from a vast amount of data. In this paper, we propose an automatic retrieval system for Japanese nautical charts and sailing directions, which is composed of a general purpose database, a retrieval algorithm and a user-friendly interface. The database contains the data from 781 sheets of Japanese nautical charts for the waters surrounding Japan. When the user inputs a navigational route in terms of the departure port, altering points, and arrival port on the chart shown on his workstation's graphic display by its mouse pointer device, the system can retrieve relevant charts for the route. The database of sailing directions for our retrieval system currently contains only data for 'Seto Inland Sea.' The sailing directions are classified into 2,000 areas and items. When the user selects an item of the operation menu on the graphic display, the system can retrieve and show the requested information. Our system can save time considerably, compared with manual operation. Moreover, it retrieves relevant navigational information from the database without any omissions.Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ), 17 Jan. 2001,

Next, by successive data assimilation, we attempted to estimate the tsunami velocity inversely from ship motions using the actual ship data obtained in the Great East Japan Earthquake and the developed model. As a result, it was shown that the tsunami velocity can be estimated inversely from ship motions data, although some problems remain. In addition, we made a database of the details of vessels sailing around Japan and constructed a system that identifies ship's items from the identification number transmitted by AIS data.
