- ++ 1. IntroductionThe Hayabusa2 spacecraft is currently cruising through deep space for the extended mission Hayabusa2#. The spacecraft is scheduled to flyby asteroid 2002 CC21 in 2026 and rendezvous with asteroid 1998 KY26 in 2031. Hayabusa2's VIS cameras include the ONC-T (Onborad Navigation Camera - Telescopic) and the wide-angle ONC-W1 and ONC-W2 (Figure 1). ONC-T, with its high sensitivity and multi-band observation capability, is the primary scientific instrument [1]. During the long cruise, ecliptic light observations [2] and exoplanet observations [3] continue as ONC-T observations. On the other hand, we are exploring ways to further utilize ONC cameras during the cruisng phase, and in this study, we examine how to utilize ONC-W2 and plan to process the data. Figure 1. Characteristics of ONC-W2The disadvantages and advantages of using the ONC-W2 for distant objects are as follows.[Disadvantages] Low sensitivity and stray light- The sensitivity of the ONC-W2 is not sufficient to observe distant objects because it is designed to observe the surface of an asteroid with disk-resolved situation.- The stray light from the multi-layer insulation at the edge of ONC-W2's FOV is very large for long exposure observation.[Advantage] Wide range of observable direction- The ONC-W2 camera can observe a wide area, whereas the ONC-T camera can only point in a narrow directions due to the limitations of the solar array paddle. Since the W2 camera faces the side of the solar array paddle (in the +Z direction of the spacecraft), it can cover 48% of the entire sky by turning the spacecraft attitude around the +Z axis and pointing the camera in different directions without losing power.Due to its low sensitivity but wide field of view, W2 could be used, for example, to continuously observe bright new comets for several days or weeks. The most recent such possibility is the comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS). An example about the estimation of observable period is shown in Section 4.++ 3. Preparation of data processing methodsNew ONC-W2 applications will require additional tools different from those for Ryugu images. We are working on a list of necessary data processing methods and calibration tasks.+ Stray lightPrevious calibration studies have shown that the presence or absence of stray light in W2 depends on the attitude of the spacecraft [5]. When stray light does occur, the degree of stray light is significant (Figure 2). The primary countermeasure is to adopt an attitude that minimizes stray light, but it is also necessary to develop image processing methods to remove stray light. Figure 2. An example of ONC-W2 long exposure (44.6s) image with stray light. White dots are mainly hot pixels.+ Sensitivity checkThe sensitivity of ONC-W2 prior to Ryugu arrival has been confirmed by [5]. However, because of sensitivity changes due to the Ryugu touchdown and changes over time, it is necessary to confirm the current sensitivity. As a quick check tool, we have prepared a method to estimate the sensitivity statistically from multiple stars. Figure 3 below plots the relationship between the stars V mag and integrated DN from 43 frames observed in 2016, with stray light removed. These stars include variable stars, but the effect is expected to be smaller by using a large number of stars.  Figure 3. Observation opportunitiesWe are also considering the preparation of methods and tools for narrowing down suitable observation opportunities for ONC-W2. The following is the case study of comet C/2023 A3.Figure 4 shows the timing of the comet's entry into the FOV of ONC-W2. The orbit of the comet was obtained from JPL Horizons Sytem [6]. In this figure, the entire space as seen from the spacecraft is projected in a simple cylindrical projection. The spacecraft is oriented with the solar array paddle (+Z) pointing toward the sun and the W2 camera side toward the lower ecliptic plane. The red dots are the direction of the comet calculated every other day. The comet was found to cross the FOV from August 20 to August 28, 2024. Further observation will be possible by changing the attitude of the spacecraft. Figure 5 shows the total magnitude of Comet C/2023 A3 as expected from the position of Hayabusa2, which is expected to be 2-3 magnitude at the end of August, bright enough to be observed by ONC-W2. At this time, the Earth is on the opposite side of the Sun, making it difficult to observe this comet. Therefore, observation of this comet by a spacecraft would be highly valuable as data. We plan to conduct an observational test with ONC-W2 during this period. Due to its low sensitivity but wide field of view, ONC-W2 could be used to continuously observe bright new comets for several days or weeks. We plan to conduct an observational test of the the comet C/2023 A3 in August. - Abstract The zodiacal light (ZL) is sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust (IPD) in the optical wavelengths. The spatial distribution of IPD in the Solar system may hold an important key to understanding the evolution of the Solar system and material transportation within it. The IPD number density can be expressed as , and the result of was obtained by the previous observations from the interplanetary space by Helios 1/2 and Pioneer 10/11 in the 1970s and 1980s. However, no direct measurements of based on the ZL observation from the interplanetary space outside the Earth's orbit have been conducted since then. Here we introduce the initial result of the ZL radial profile at optical wavelengths observed at 0.76-1.06 au by ONC-T with Hayabusa2# mission in 2021-2022. The obtained ZL brightness is well reproduced by the model brightness, but there is a small excess of the observed ZL brightness over the model brightness at around 0.9 au. The obtained radial power-law index is , which is consistent with the previous results based on the ZL observations. - Abstract Japanese Hayabusa2 spacecraft has successfully carried out an impact experiment using a small carry-on impactor (SCI) on an asteroid (162173) Ryugu. We examine the size distribution of particles inside and outside an artificial impact crater (the SCI crater) based on the images taken by the optical navigation camera onboard the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. The circumferential variation in particle size distribution inside the SCI crater is recognized and we interpret that major circumferential variation is caused by the large boulders inside the SCI crater that existed prior to the impact. The size distribution inside the SCI crater also shows that the subsurface layer beneath the SCI impact site had a large number of particles with a characteristic size of – 9 cm, which is consistent with the previous evaluations. On the other hand, the size distribution outside the SCI crater exhibits the radial variation, implying that the deposition of ejecta from the SCI crater is involved. The slope of the size distribution outside the crater at small sizes differs from the slope of the size distribution on the surface of Ryugu by approximately 1 or slightly less. This is consistent with the claim that some particles are buried in fine particles of the subsurface origin included in ejecta from the SCI crater. Thus, the particle size distributions inside and outside the SCI crater reveal that the subsurface layer beneath the SCI impact site is rich in fine particles with – 9 cm in size while the particles on the surface have a size distribution of a power-law form with shallower slopes at small sizes due to the deposition of fine ejecta from the subsurface layer. Finally, we discuss a process responsible for this difference in particle size distribution between the surface and the subsurface layers. The occurrence of segregation in the gravitational flow of particles on the surface of Ryugu is plausible. - Abstract Experiments on crater formation in the strength regime were conducted using projectiles of various shapes with an aspect ratio of ~ 1, including both solid and hollow interiors. The surface diameter, inner (pit) diameter, and depth of the craters on basalt and porous gypsum targets were measured. Using the bulk density of the projectile, the surface diameter and depth for basalt and the pit diameter and depth for porous gypsum were scaled using the pi-scaling law for crater formation in the strength regime. The numerical code iSALE was used to simulate the impact of projectiles of various shapes and interior structure with similar bulk densities. Results show that the distributions of the maximum (peak) pressure experienced and particle velocity in the targets were similar regardless of projectile shape and interior structure, implying that the dimensions of the final craters were almost identical. This is consistent with the experimental results. Thus, we conclude that the size of the craters formed by the impact of projectiles with different shape and interior structure can be scaled using a conventional scaling law in the strength regime, using bulk density as projectile density. - Presented here are the observations and interpretations from a comprehensive analysis of 16 representative particles returned from the C-type asteroid Ryugu by the Hayabusa2 mission. On average Ryugu particles consist of 50% phyllosilicate matrix, 41% porosity and 9% minor phases, including organic matter. The abundances of 70 elements from the particles are in close agreement with those of CI chondrites. Bulk Ryugu particles show higher δ18O, Δ17O, and ε54Cr values than CI chondrites. As such, Ryugu sampled the most primitive and least-thermally processed protosolar nebula reservoirs. Such a finding is consistent with multi-scale H-C-N isotopic compositions that are compatible with an origin for Ryugu organic matter within both the protosolar nebula and the interstellar medium. The analytical data obtained here, suggests that complex soluble organic matter formed during aqueous alteration on the Ryugu progenitor planetesimal (several 10’s of km), <2.6 Myr after CAI formation. - Abstract C-type asteroids1 are considered to be primitive small Solar System bodies enriched in water and organics, providing clues to the origin and evolution of the Solar System and the building blocks of life. C-type asteroid 162173 Ryugu has been characterized by remote sensing2–7 and on-asteroid measurements8,9 with Hayabusa2 (ref. 10). However, the ground truth provided by laboratory analysis of returned samples is invaluable to determine the fine properties of asteroids and other planetary bodies. We report preliminary results of analyses on returned samples from Ryugu of the particle size distribution, density and porosity, spectral properties and textural properties, and the results of a search for Ca–Al-rich inclusions (CAIs) and chondrules. The bulk sample mainly consists of rugged and smooth particles of millimetre to submillimetre size, confirming that the physical and chemical properties were not altered during the return from the asteroid. The power index of its size distribution is shallower than that of the surface boulder observed on Ryugu11, indicating differences in the returned Ryugu samples. The average of the estimated bulk densities of Ryugu sample particles is 1,282 ± 231 kg m−3, which is lower than that of meteorites12, suggesting a high microporosity down to the millimetre scale, extending centimetre-scale estimates from thermal measurements5,9. The extremely dark optical to near-infrared reflectance and spectral profile with weak absorptions at 2.7 and 3.4 μm imply a carbonaceous composition with indigenous aqueous alteration, matching the global average of Ryugu3,4 and confirming that the sample is representative of the asteroid. - ONC (Optical Navigation Camera; 光学航法カメラ) は探査機はやぶさ2の目であり, リュウグウを訪れた際には科学的にも工学的にも広報的にも幅広く活⽤された.ONCは広域撮像⽤のONC-W1,ONC-W2,望遠カメラ且つ7色のバンドパスフィルターをもつONC-Tで構成されている.ONC-Tは科学観測において特に重要で,フィルターを活⽤し⼩惑星表⾯の色の変化を記載することや解像度の高い画像から詳細な地形の観測を目的としている.試料採取地点の選定にも,粒径や風化作⽤の推定といった核となる情報を得て貢献してきた.本稿では,今後のサンプル分析を見据えて,主にONCチームのONC-Tを⽤いた分光観測における活動とその結果として得られた“仮説”を振り返りたいと思う.The Japanese Society for Planetary Sciences, Jun. 2021, Planetary People - The Japanese Society for Planetary Sciences, 30(2) (2), 64 - 71, Japanese

- Abstract Ryugu is a carbonaceous rubble-pile asteroid visited by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Small rubble pile asteroids record the thermal evolution of their much larger parent bodies. However, recent space weathering and/or solar heating create ambiguities between the uppermost layer observable by remote-sensing and the pristine material from the parent body. Hayabusa2 remote-sensing observations find that on the asteroid (162173) Ryugu both north and south pole regions preserve the material least processed by space weathering, which is spectrally blue carbonaceous chondritic material with a 0–3% deep 0.7-µm band absorption, indicative of Fe-bearing phyllosilicates. Here we report that spectrally blue Ryugu’s parent body experienced intensive aqueous alteration and subsequent thermal metamorphism at 570–670 K (300–400 °C), suggesting that Ryugu’s parent body was heated by radioactive decay of short-lived radionuclides possibly because of its early formation 2–2.5 Ma. - A projectile accelerated by the Hayabusa2 Small Carry-on Impactor successfully produced an artificial impact crater with a final apparent diameter of 14.5 ± 0.8 m on the surface of the near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu on April 5, 2019. At the time of cratering, Deployable Camera 3 took clear time-lapse images of the ejecta curtain, an assemblage of ejected particles forming a curtain-like structure emerging from the crater. Focusing on the optical depth of the ejecta curtain and comparing it with a theoretical model, we infer the size of the ejecta particles. As a result, the typical size of the ejecta particles is estimated to be several centimeters to decimeters, although it slightly depends on the assumed size distribution. Since the ejecta particles are expected to come from a depth down to ~1 m, our result suggests that the subsurface layer of Ryugu is composed of relatively small particles compared to the uppermost layer on which we observe many meter-sized boulders. Our result also suggests a deficit of particles of less than ~1 mm in the subsurface layer. - Collecting a sample of asteroid Ryugu The Hayabusa2 spacecraft recently traveled to the nearby carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu to collect samples and return them to Earth for laboratory analysis. Morota et al. describe Hayabusa2's first sample collection, taken during a brief touchdown on Ryugu's surface. Close-up images and video taken during the sampling process allowed the authors to investigate the surface colors and morphology on a small scale. Relating these to the surface craters and stratigraphy constrains the evolution of Ryugu. The authors conclude that the asteroid experienced a prior period of strong solar heating caused by changes in its orbit. The sample is expected to arrive on Earth in December 2020. - A high-resolution 3D surface model, map-projected to a digital terrain model (DTM), and precisely ortho-rectified context images (orthoimages) of MASCOT landing site area are important data sets for the scientific analysis of relevant data that have been acquired with MASCOT’s image camera system MASCam and other instruments (e.g., the radiometer MARA and the magnetometer MASMag). We performed a stereo-photogrammetric (SPG) analysis of 1050 images acquired from the Hayabusa2 Optical Navigation Camera system (ONC) during the asteroid characterization phase and the MASCOT release phase in early October 2018 to construct a photogrammetric control point network of asteroid (162173) Ryugu. We validated existing rotational parameters for Ryugu and improved the camera orientation (position and pointing) of the ONC images to decimeter accuracy using SPG bundle block adjustment. We produced a high-resolution DTM of the entire MASCOT landing site area. - Images from the Optical Navigation Camera system (ONC) onboard the Hayabusa2 spacecraft show the MASCOT lander during its descent to the surface of asteroid (162173) Ryugu. We used results from a previous stereo-photogrammetric analysis that provided precise ONC image orientation data (camera position and pointing), ONC orthoimages, and an ONC-based 3D surface model to combine them with the visibilities of MASCOT itself and its shadow on-ground within the ONC images. We integrated additional information from instruments onboard MASCOT (MASMag, MARA, MASCam) and derived MASCOT’s release position and modeled its free-fall descent path and its velocity over 350 s from its release at ∼41 m altitude above ground until its first contact with the surface of Ryugu. After first contact, MASCOT bounced over the surface of Ryugu for 663 s and came to rest at its first settlement point after four intermediate surface contacts. We again used ONC images that show MASCOT and partly its shadow and reconstructed the bouncing path and the respective velocities of MASCOT. - The Hayabusa2 spacecraft arrived at the near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid 162173 Ryugu in 2018. We present Hayabusa2 observations of Ryugu's shape, mass, and geomorphology. Ryugu has an oblate "spinning top" shape, with a prominent circular equatorial ridge. Its bulk density, 1.19 ± 0.02 grams per cubic centimeter, indicates a high-porosity (>50%) interior. Large surface boulders suggest a rubble-pile structure. Surface slope analysis shows Ryugu's shape may have been produced from having once spun at twice the current rate. Coupled with the observed global material homogeneity, this suggests that Ryugu was reshaped by centrifugally induced deformation during a period of rapid rotation. - The near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu, the target of Hayabusa2 sample return mission, is thought to be a primitive carbonaceous object. We report reflectance spectra of Ryugu’s surface acquired with the Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on Hayabusa2, to provide direct measurements of the surface composition and geological context for the returned samples. A weak, narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 μm was detected across the entire observed surface, indicating that hydroxyl (OH)-bearing minerals are ubiquitous there. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are similar to thermally- and/or shock-metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. - Thermal conductivity of powder materials under vacuum depends on several parameters such as particle size, temperature, porosity, etc. However, there appears to be no model that quantitatively expresses these dependencies. In this study, we investigated particle size and temperature dependencies by way of thermal conductivity measurements under vacuum environment using glass beads. As a result, it was found that the conductive and radiative contributions on the effective thermal conductivity increased with increasing the particle size, which might be explained by combination of both number of contact points per unit volume and thermal resistance at interpaticle contacts and pore size between particles, respectively.The Heat Transfer Society of Japan, Jan. 2013, Thermal Science and Engineering, 21(1) (1), 1 - 12, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- A miniaturized x-ray tube specialized for in-situ x-ray fluorescence and diffraction analyses of rocks and powder samples is being developed. Our primary motivation for the miniaturization is to mount tubes on spacecraft for a future Japanese lunar lander/rover mission, which is the next Japanese lunar exploration program to the SELENE lunar orbiter, and perform remote controlled x-ray generators. Possible x-ray instruments for the mission would be: the x-ray fluorescence/diffraction analyzer on the lander, and the x-ray fluorescence spectrometer mounted on the arm of the rover. For the miniaturization and the future operations on the lunar surface, carbon nanotube based field-emission-type (CNT-FE) x-ray tube was adopted. Due to FE's high electron current density and no need to heat itself up, the downsized x-ray tube is attainable with simple cathode dimension. - The SELENE-2, a lunar landing mission to clarify the lunar origin and evolution, has been studied in Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). And our group proposes to develop Science Instrument Package (SIP), it can conduct detailed analyses of the lunar rock samples collected by the rover with an X-ray spectrometer/diffractometer, a multi-band microscope. The SIP also controls the sample surface condition with grinding and brushing, avoiding it from contamination by surface bearing dusts and weathering processes. - We present the results of remote X-ray fluorescence spectrometry of a near-Earth asteroid 25143 Itokawa with the X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRS) onboard Hayabusa. As has been reported, major elemental ratios of Mg/Si and Al/Si indicate that the surface of asteroid is more like an ordinary chondrite meteorite, especially LL- or L-chondrite, although some kinds of primitive achondrite are not ruled out. In this study, compositions of heavier elements such as Ca/Si and Fe/Si are quantitatively analyzed as well as the upper limit of S/Si. - In HAYABUSA/XRS, X-ray CCD needs to be kept below -40 degree Celsius to achieve the energy resolution to analyze elemental composition of the asteroid surface. XRS has three different techniques cooling CCDs; 1.thermal filament between XRS and HAYABUSA, 2. Pertie cooler on CCDs, 3. passive radiation by the hood to remove the stray light. The thermometer attached on the hood is available to measure thermal emissivity from the asteroid. To construct a thermal model of Itokawa, we considered the thermal balance between XRS and other environments such as the solar flux, heat radiation of HAYABUSA and Itokawa, heat generation of inside instruments that affected the temperature observed by this thermometer. To estimate the heat generation of inside instruments we divided XRS into 26 elements and solved equations of thermal conduction between nodes. - The Hayabusa will rendezvous 25143 Itokawa, an S (IV)-class near-earth asteroid, in September to October, 2005. The XRS is among the remote sensing instruments aboard. We present here the main objectives of the XRS observation. The XRS will determine major elemental composition of surface of the asteroid. Elemental variation will be surveyed by asteroid rotation in longitudinal direction, maybe with spatial resolution of 60 degrees. The XRS always detect such major elements as Mg, Al, Si, and S, but it also can do for higher atomic number elements such as Ca and Fe, especially during the occurrence of solar flare. Furthermore, microscopic roughness of the surface is informed by observation at various solar phase angles due to particle size effect in X-ray fluorescence. - We have developed a X-ray analyzer for future SELENE-2 lunar lander. The X-ray fluorescence spectrometer / diffractometer (XRF/XRD) is mounted on SELENE-2 lander, and will analyze lunar rock samples which SELENE-2 rover picks up from scientifically important area on the lunar surface. The X-ray tube as a primary X-ray generator for the XRF/XRD has some advantages to carry out quicker and higher quality measurements, compared with radioactive isotopes which were conventionally used in past landing missions. The problem to mount X-ray tube on the spacecraft is its large size and mass. We adopt a new type of X-ray tube based on electron field emission (FE) from carbon nanotubes (CNT) to achieve significant miniaturization. - The SELENE (SELenological and Engineering Explorer) is a Japanese lunar polar orbiter with 14 scientific instruments. The XRS is to map major elemental composition in 20km spatial resolution, to provide the clue to understanding the lunar evolution. - We present the results of initial operation, the current status, and the future observation plan of the X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRS) onboard Hayabusa, which was launched with the fifth M-V launch vehicle on May 9th, 2003. The XRS observes X-rays characteristic of elements excited by solar irradiation, to determine major elemental composition of asteroid Itokawa (1998SF36). Then we classify the S-class asteroid and prospect the degree of evolution processes. During the two-year long cruising phase, the XRS are checked out its function and the detectors against radiation damage, and observes X-ray bodies such as super nova remnants or active galactic cores as well as cosmic backgrounds of X-rays for in-flight calibration. The XRS also monitors solar X-rays using the standard sample. 火星衛星Phobosからのサンプルリターンに挑む火星衛星探査計画 (Martian Moons eXploration: MMX) は,現在,宇宙航空研究開発機構 (JAXA) プリプロジェクトとして,2024年の打ち上げと5年の往還期間を設定し,精力的な検討・初期開発が進められている.MMXは,サンプル分析,Deimosを加えた火星衛星の近接観測,そして火星大気および火星圏のモニタリング観測を組み合わせることにより,惑星に寄りそう衛星という切り口と視座から,太陽系における大気と水を湛えたハビタブル惑星の形成と進化の解明に迫ろうとしている.

So we have to develop onbord processing method for future X-ray fluorescence spectrometer.
In this presentation, we evaluated how the Hotpixel had worsen the energy resolution in Hayabusa by using 'CCD-image' data taken in cruising phase and in laboratory.
We present the results of another processing method for future asteroids exploration. - Analytical procedure and method is under development for the X-Ray Spectrometer onboard SELENE(Kaguya). We present the system in detail. Furterhmore, we investigate the datainterpretation for XRF, including the surface microscopic and macroscopic roughness as well as mineral mixing effects. For a daily automatic analysis for huge amount of data, correction equations for ther effects are necessary to be defined. - XRS (x-ray spectrometer) onboard Hayabusa has observed x-ray fluorescence from near-Earth asteroid 25143 Itokawa to determine major elemental composition. Okada et al. (2006) reported average elemental mass ratios of Mg/Si = 0.78 + - 0.09 and Al/Si = 0.07 + - 0.03. In this study, we attempted to estimate upper limits of Ca and Fe. To discussion about abundance of Ca and Fe, we need to integrate data longer time, fallowing the result of numerical simulation. - Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Kobe University, Apr. 2019 - Mar. 2022Study of collisional disruption by using the ultra-high speed X-ray tomography and implication for the diversity of asteroid familiesThe mass-velocity distribution of impact fragments at the time of collisional disruption was measured by analyzing the images taken by Flash X-rays and the images acquired by a high-speed camera by the digital image correlation method. Impact experiments were performed using targets that simulate the various stages of thermal evolution of planetesimals. From the comparison with the numerical simulation, it became clear that the impact strength QD* in the gravity-dominated regime can be estimated from the semi-theoretical formula by using the relationship between the median velocity v* and the energy density Q obtained in the laboratory experiment. It was found that QD* is sensitive to porosity and internal structure, but insensitive to tensile strength.
