■ Paper- Diabetic skeletal muscles show reduced contractile force and increased fatigability. Hands are a target for several diabetes-induced complications. Therefore, reduced handgrip strength often occurs as a consequence of diabetes. The aim of this study was to examine whether long-term exercise can prevent reduction of grip strength in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) model OLETF rats, and to explore the mechanisms underlying diabetes-induced grip strength reduction. Ten 5-week-old OLETF rats were used as experimental animals, and five non-diabetic LETO rats as controls of OLETF rats. Half OLETF rats performed daily voluntary wheel-running for 17 months (OLETF + EXE), and the rest of OLETF and LETO rats were sedentary. Grip strength was higher in OLETF + EXE and LETO groups than in OLETF group. OLETF group with hyperglycemia showed an increase in HbA1c, serum TNF-α, and muscle SERCA activity, but a decrease in circulating insulin. Each fiber area, total fiber area, and % total fiber area in type IIb fibers of extensor digitorum longus muscles were larger in OLETF + EXE and LETO groups than in OLETF group. There was a positive correlation between grip strength and the above three parameters concerning type IIb fiber area. Therefore, type IIb fiber atrophy may be the major direct cause of grip strength reduction in OLETF group, although there seems multiple etiological mechanisms. Long-term wheel-running may have blocked the diabetes-induced reduction of grip strength by preventing type IIb fiber atrophy. Regular exercise may be a potent modality for preventing not only the progression of diabetes but muscle dysfunction in T2DM patients.Lead, Sep. 2021, Physiological reports, 9(18) (18), e15046, English, International magazine[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Long-term wheel-running can prevent deterioration of bone properties in diabetes mellitus model ratsObjectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of long-term wheel-running on tibia bone properties in T2DM Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats. Methods: Ten five-week-old male OLETF rats were used as experimental animals and 5 Long-Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO) rats as controls. Half of OLETF rats performed daily voluntary wheel-running for 17 months (OLETF-EXE), while neither the remainder of OLETF nor LETO rats had exercise. At the end of experiment, in addition to serum biochemical and bone formation/resorption marker analyses, bone mass, trabecular bone microarchitecture and cortical bone geometry were analyzed in left tibia, and bone mechanical strength of right tibia was measured. Results: Tibia bone mass, trabecular bone microarchitecture, cortical bone geometry and bone mechanical strength deteriorated in diabetic OLETF rats. However, such deterioration was obviously attenuated in OLETF-EXE rats, which maintained normal levels of blood glucose, HbA1c and blood urea nitrogen. Conclusions: Daily wheel-running could prevent the deterioration of bone properties in OLETF rats. This would be induced mainly by suppressing the development of T2DM. Regular physical exercise may be a potent strategy for preventing not only the development of diabetes but also the deterioration of bone properties in patients with chronic T2DM.JMNI, Mar. 2017, JOURNAL OF MUSCULOSKELETAL & NEURONAL INTERACTIONS, 17(1) (1), 433 - 443, English[Refereed]Scientific journal
- Objectives: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) increases fracture risk despite normal to high levels of bone mineral density. Bone quality is known to affect bone fragility in T2DM. The aim of this study was to clarify the trabecular bone microstructure and cortical bone geometry of the femur in T2DM model rats. Methods: Five-week-old Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF; n = 5) and Long-Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO; n = 5) rats were used. At the age of 18 months, femurs were scanned with micro-computed tomography, and trabecular bone microstructure and cortical bone geometry were analyzed. Results: Trabecular bone microstructure and cortical bone geometry deteriorated in the femur in OLETF rats. Compared with in LETO rats, in OLETF rats, bone volume fraction, trabecular number and connectivity density decreased, and trabecular space significantly increased. Moreover, in OLETF rats, cortical bone volume and section area decreased, and medullary volume significantly increased. Conclusions: Long-term T2DM leaded to deterioration in trabecular and cortical bone structure. Therefore, OLETF rats may serve as a useful animal model for investigating the relationship between T2DM and bone quality. The Korean Society of Osteoporosi, Mar. 2016, Osteoporosis and sarcopenia, 2(1) (1), 25 - 29, English, International magazine[Refereed]Scientific journal

- The purpose of this study is to explore the multidimensional benefits experienced by Masters Sports participants from a case of the Masters Koshien. This study focused on the Masters Koshien to collect qualitative data regarding detailed description of subjective benefits of the event participants and investigated what kind of benefits do the masters sports participants obtain substantially. Survey interviews were conducted and 1,878 linguistic data items were collected from 304 participants of the 2008 Masters Koshien, our action research program. In the series of thematic analysis, 21 benefits of masters sports were extracted and divided into 4 different dimensions of benefits: individual benefits, community benefits, social benefits, and educational benefits. It was suggested that this study could reveal three additional benefits that previous studies have not been explored such as community benefits, social benefits, and educational benefits of masters sports. Moreover, it was revealed that the Masters Koshien presented the general benefits derived from any masters sports and the typical benefits of the Masters Koshien's unique status as a mecca-like masters sports event and as an alumni membership sport event.Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences, 2012, International Journal of Sport and Health Science, 10(0) (0), 90 - 101, English[Refereed]Scientific journal
- Background: The effects of approaching muscular fatigue on pitching biomechanics are currently unknown. As a pitcher fatigues, pitching mechanics may change, leading to a decrease in performance and an increased risk of injury. Hypothesis: As a pitcher approaches muscular fatigue, select pitching biomechanical variables will be significantly different than they were before muscular fatigue. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Ten collegiate baseball pitchers threw 15 pitches per inning for 7 to 9 innings off an indoor throwing mound during a simulated baseball game. A pitching session ended when each pitcher felt he could no longer continue owing to a subjective perception of muscular fatigue. A 6-camera 3D automatic digitizing system collected 200-Hz video data. Twenty kinematic and 11 kinetic variables were calculated throughout 4 phases of the pitch. A repeated-measure analysis of variance (P < .01) was used to compare biomechanical variables between innings. Results: Compared with the initial 2 innings, as a pitcher approached muscular fatigue during the final 2 innings he was able to pitch, there was a significant decrease in ball velocity, and the trunk was significantly closer to a vertical position. There were no other significant differences in kinematics or kinetics variables. Conclusion: The relatively few differences observed imply that pitching biomechanics remained remarkably similar between collegiate starting pitchers who threw between 105 and 135 pitches for 7 to 9 innings and approached muscular fatigue. Clinical Relevance: This study did not support the idea that there is an increase in shoulder and elbow forces and torques as muscular fatigue is approached. It is possible that if a pitcher remained in a fatigued state for a longer period of time, additional changes in pitching mechanics may occur and the risk of injury may increase.SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC, Jan. 2007, AMERICAN JOURNAL OF SPORTS MEDICINE, 35(1) (1), 23 - 33, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Baseball coaches train pitchers to keep their shoulder abduction at 90° during delivery, because this angle is believed to maximize ball speed and reduce the stress on the throwing arm. In fact, however, the shoulder abduction angle for some pitchers, including professional pitchers, deviates from 90°. There likely are reasons for such deviation. The purposes of this study, therefore, were to investigate the effects of shoulder abduction angle on ball velocity and on the injury-related joint kinetic variable, and to determine why the shoulder abduction angle varies among pitchers. Eleven professional pitchers were video-taped with two high-speed cameras. The resulting kinematic data were used to simulate several pitching motions by varying the shoulder abduction angle from the actual angle. Maximum wrist velocity was used as a reasonable approximation of ball velocity. Elbow varus torque was used as a kinetic variable. The square torque for the throwing arm and torque change for the throwing arm were used to investigate the cause of the variation. It was found that the shoulder abduction angle of 90° did not always maximize wrist velocity nor minimize elbow varus torque. The actual shoulder abduction angle for each pitcher was highly consistent with the angle that minimized both square torque and torque change. The results suggested that the proficient throwers in this study moved their pitching arm so as to minimize mechanical cost while at the same time optimizing performance.Nov. 2002, Journal of Applied Biomechanics, 18, 1p-15p(4) (4), 306 - 320, English[Refereed]Scientific journal
- Relationship between fear of failing and balancing ability during abrupt deceleration in aged women having similar habitual physical activitiesThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of fear of falling on balancing ability during abrupt deceleration in aged women. The subjects were 20 women aged between 67 and 75 years. They were classified into two groups, one having a fear of falling (group FF, n = 10) and another without this fear (group NFF, n = 10). The two groups had similar daily physical activities. Changes in the centre of foot pressure (CFP) were measured during postural sway following horizontal deceleration of the force platform on which they were standing, and the response time and CFP displacement were evaluated. In addition, the electromyogram (EMG) onset in the tibialis anterior muscle and medial gastrocnemius muscle during abrupt deceleration, and its difference between the two muscles were measured, and the relative level of co-contraction of antagonistic muscles (the co-contraction index, CCI) in the lower extremity muscle group was calculated. The response time and CFP displacement immediately after abrupt deceleration were significantly higher in group FF than in NFF (P < 0.05). The EMG onset in the two muscles did not significantly differ between the two groups. The difference in EMG onset between the two muscles was significantly lower in group FF than in NFF (P <0.05). The CCI was significantly higher in group FF than in NFF (P < 0.05). These results suggest that there were negative effects of a fear of falling on the balancing ability immediately after abrupt deceleration. This may be because a fear of falling increases the cocontraction of antagonist muscles in the lower extremity muscle group.SPRINGER-VERLAG, Oct. 2001, EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSIOLOGY, 85(6) (6), 501 - 506, English[Refereed]Scientific journal
- Age-related differences in postural control in humans in response to a sudden deceleration generated by postural disturbanceAge-related differences in postural control in response to a relatively large deceleration resulting from postural disturbance were investigated in eight normal elderly men (age range 67-72 years) and eight young men as controls (age range 19-22 years) using a moving platform. Data were obtained for the hip, knee and ankle angles, position of the centre of foot pressure (CFP), head acceleration, and muscle activity of the leg muscles. The elderly subjects had slower and larger ankle and hip joint movements, and CFP displacement in response to the disturbance compared to the young controls. The elderly subjects also had a delayed occurrence, and greater magnitude of peak acceleration of head rotation than did the young subjects. For the elderly subjects, the CFP was closely related to angular changes in the hip joint movement., but not to those of the ankle and knee joint movements. For the young subjects, on the other hand, the CFP was significantly correlated with angular change in the ankle joint. Cocontraction of the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscles was observed in the elderly subjects. The results indicated that a movement pattern for postural correction in the elderly adults was different from that of the young adults. The elderly relied more on hip movements while the young controls relied on ankle movements to control postural stability.SPRINGER-VERLAG, Jul. 2001, EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSIOLOGY, 85(1-2) (1-2), 10 - 18, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Relationship between the habitual physical activity and the balancing ability against abrupt acceleration disturbance in elderly femalesThe purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between balancing ability during abrupt acceleration and the habitual physical activity level of elderly females. Thirty-one elderly females, aged 65-75 years, volunteered for this study. Changes in the center of foot pressure (CFP) were measured during postural sway following platform acceleration, and the response time and CFP displacement were evaluated. The scores of their daily physical activities (TS)-consisting of household activities (HS), leisure time activities (LS) and sports activities (SS)-were estimated by the modified Voorrips's questionaire method. Response time and CFP displacement correlated significantly with age (p < 0.001). Response time also correlated significantly with the SS, LS and TS scores (p < 0.05). CFP displacement also correlated significantly with the SS and TS scores (p < 0.05). These results suggest that postural balancing ability during abrupt acceleration correlates significantly with the habitual physical activity levels, especially sports activities in elderly females.JAPANESE SOC PHYSICAL FITNESS SPORTS MEDICINE, Feb. 2000, JAPANESE JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL FITNESS AND SPORTS MEDICINE, 49(1) (1), 111 - 120, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- A study was conducted to examine the feasibility and validity of using integrated electromyographic signals (IEMG) for determination of anaerobic threshold (AT) in the elderly. Twentynine healthy elderly subjects (aged 67.6±7.7 yr) and twelve young males (aged 23.2±7.9 yr) performed ramp cycle exercise to exhaustion, increasing at a rate of 12.5 W/min for the elderly group and 25.0 W/min for the young group, following 3 min of exercise at zero work load. Myoelectrical signals were measured continuously from the vastus lateralis muscle, and values in terms of IEMG were computed every 10 s throughout the test with A/D conversion at 500 Hz. For the criterion of IEMG threshold, the breakpoint in the relationship between power output and IEMG was determined by two-segmentall linear regression. VT was defined as the VO_2, at the onset of a nonlinear increase in VE and/or a sustained rise in VE/VO_2 without a rise in VE/VCO_2. It was found that the value of VO_2 in terms of IEMGT was similar to VT in both groups, 16.3 and 18/kg/min for the eldedy group and 33.5 and 36.3 ml/kg/min for the young group, respectively. Furthemore,IEMGT was correlated ignificantly (P<0.001) with VT in both groups (r=0.871 for the elderly group and r=0.925 for the young group). It is concluded that the IEMGT method for determination of AT in the elderly is simple and useful. The Japanese Society of Physical Fitness and Sport Medicine, Apr. 1992, Japanese Journal of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine, 41(2) (2), 183 - 189, Japanese

- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kobe University, 2005 - 2005The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 18-months multidimensional exercise training on balancing ability against abrupt deceleration in the elderly. Twenty community-dwelling healthy elderly (≧65 years of age) with no history of one or less falls in the previous 6 month participated. They were classified into exercise group (n=10) and control group (n=10). The 18-month exercise training program was designed to increase strength, flexibility of the lower extremities, dynamic balance and ADL. The control group received no intervention. Changes in the center of foot pressure (CFP) were measured during postural sway following platform deceleration, and the response time and CFP displacement were evaluated. The EMG onset in the tibialis anterior muscle and medial gastrocnemius muscle during abrupt acceleration was measured, and the relative level of co-contraction of antagonistic muscles (CCI) in the lower extremity muscle group was calculated. In addition, motor and sensory abilities were measured. Significant improvement were observed in training group for the response time and CFP displacement immediately after abrupt deceleration in post-training vs pre-training. CCI in training group was significantly lower in post-training than in pre-training. Significant improvement were observed in training group for the strength of planterfiexor and dorsiflexor muscles, and knee extensor muscle, flexibilities of ankle and hip joints, choice reaction time, one leg balancing time, time to sit-to-stand, and speed of walking as fast as possible. These results suggest that this exercise training for 18-month can improve the balancing ability against abrupt deceleration, thereby reducing risk for falls - This may be because improvement of neuro-muscular function.Competitive research funding

Results were as follows : 1) Larger change of angle of hip joint was noted in the elderly compared to the young group. Cross-correlation function between CFP and angle of hip joint in the elderly was relatively kept higher than in the young during postural sway. These results suggest that hip joint motion play the important role of postural control against abrupt acceleration in the elderly. 2) Response time and CFP displacement in CFP against abrupt acceleration correlated significantly with strength of planterflexor and dorsiflexor muscles, and knee extensor and flexor muscles, flexibilities of ankle and hip joints, speed of walking as fast as possible. 3) The uphill walking group showed significant shorter response times and CFP displacement during postural sway than the control group against abrupt acceleration. There were significant values in leg power, flexibility, agility, reaction time, and static balance in the uphill walking group than in the control group. Total response time in CFP in all subjects correlated significantly with agility, static balance, as well as CFP displacement correlating with leg power and flexibility. These results suggested that the uphill walking would be effective on the balancing ability against abrupt acceleration in the elderly.
