    After nearly a decade of rapid development, woody biomass has been widely used in Japan for power generation and heating. However, it has faced bottlenecks in recent years, leading to a decline in its popularity. This study aimed to elucidate the current status of woody biomass utilization in Japan by reviewing relevant research papers on upstream resource supply and downstream case studies in the supply chain. The supply potential of woody biomass estimated by reviewed articles ranges from 1.2 to 5.5 m3/year/ha, yet a significant portion of this potential cannot be exploited. The utilization of government subsidies, mechanization, and aggregated forests can substantially enhance the availability. The utilization of woody biomass has garnered widespread attention from the Japanese government and private enterprises, presenting an economic impact ranging from 66 to 249 million JPY/t, along with a GHG emission reduction spanning from −17.29 to 202.44 kg-CO2eq/GJ. However, balancing cost and scale remains the primary challenge facing woody biomass utilization in Japan.

    This study aimed to identify the impact of achieving the 1.5 °C target on the petroleum supply chain in Japan, and discuss the feasibility and challenges of decarbonization. First, a national material flow was established for the petroleum supply chain in Japan, including processes for crude petroleum refining, petroleum product manufacturing, plastic resin and product manufacturing, and by-product manufacturing. In particular, by-product manufacturing processes, such as hydrogen, gaseous carbon dioxide, and sulfur, were selected because they are utilized in other industries. Next, the outlook for the production of plastic resin, hydrogen, dry ice produced from carbon dioxide gas, and sulfur until 2050 was estimated for reducing petroleum consumption required to achieve the 1.5 °C target. As a result, national petroleum treatment is expected to reduce from 177,048.00 thousand kl in 2019 to 126,643.00 thousand kl in 2030 if the reduction in petroleum consumption is established. Along with this decrease, plastic resin production is expected to decrease from 10,500.00 thousand ton in 2019 to 7511.00 thousand ton by 2030. Conversely, the plastic market is expected to grow steadily, and the estimated plastic resin production in 2030 is expected to be 20,079.00 thousand ton. This result indicates that there is a large output gap between plastic supply and demand. To mitigate this gap, strongly promoting the recycling of waste plastics and making the price competitiveness of biomass plastics equal to that of petroleum-derived plastics are necessary.

    Rapid removal and treatment of waste generated during earthquakes is essential for the rapid recovery and reconstruction of the affected area. However, the environmental burden of disaster waste management efforts should not be overlooked even in disaster situations. Disaster waste management should be systematized as an integrated system wherein disaster waste management processes flow from generation to treatment. Life cycle thinking effectively makes sense of each stage of disaster waste management. Disaster waste prevention also might effectively reduce the environmental burden. This study reviews research trends in the management of disaster waste from the perspectives of the estimation of potential disaster waste, systematic evaluations of disaster waste management, and the necessity of addressing the material aspects of disaster waste prevention. In addition, the importance of measures for the prevention of disaster waste is examined in its social and cultural aspects, including such interventions as a change in residents' lifestyle in regard to the possession of consumer durables.

    The aim of this study is to graspthe actual redundant capacity of waste treatment plants as a means of evaluating possible disaster prevention countermeasures. Results of the study reflect the potential for waste treatment plants to serve as regional disaster response facilities.
    We first investigated the damage ratio for incineration plants and bulk waste treatment facilities in Japan based on combining the vector data of plant locations and information from seismic damage distributions using GIS; of main concern was the case of the great earthquakes that occurred in the Nankai trough. In the next step, we conducted a questionnaire-survey of 1,361 municipalities throughout Japan. The redundant capacity of waste incineration plants was calculated using the maximum working hours derived from this survey. Finally, we conducted a case study to evaluate the redundant capacity of incineration plants operated by municipalities after the presumed great earthquake along the Nankai trough that struck.

    This study aims to estimate micro material stock derived from consumer goods using fundamental data such as possession and expenditure of consumer goods in housing, considering the type of housing and class of total floor area of housing. A questionnaire survey of residents living in the eight cities of the Tama river basin was conducted to clarify the possession and expenditure of consumer goods in units of items/housing and JPY/housing. Identified consumer goods were 14 types and 97 items. The questionnaire also asked the storeys on which the consumer goods are installed. Material intensity coefficients (MIC) regarding the weight of consumer goods were calculated based on web–based and statistical surveys in units of kg/item and kg/USD. Micro material stock derived from consumer goods in housing totalled 5.84 t (t) in detached housing and 5.71 t in complex housing. Amount of the micro material stock derived from consumer goods corresponds to 10.9% of the macro material stock derived from detached housing. Reliability and validity of questionnaire results and the MIC were confirmed through two types of sensitivity analysis. As a case study, the total weight of all consumer goods in Kawasaki City was calculated as 3,667,000 t. The disaster waste derived from consumer goods considering the flood damage was estimated based on the total weight of all consumer goods in the city. The resulting estimation was 229,000 t. This estimation is 0.72 times bigger than the above-mentioned result that considered the storeys on which the consumer goods are installed.

    This study is a survey conducted in questionnaire format on the usage time and the quantity of consumer durables that consume energy, relevant to households in Kobe, Japan. Based on the data containing quantity and daily usage days of consumer durables obtained from the questionnaire survey, the rate of energy consumption for each household type was calculated. By using results, energy consumption of household sector in Kobe in 2010 was estimated at approximately 25,559 TJ. Taking future changes in the number of households in Kobe into consideration, the future energy consumption in 2035 would decline by approximately 6.0% from 2010. We also revealed that full electrification of residential houses would change energy consumption structures rather than overall the energy consumption.

    This study develops a method of environmental and economic evaluation of an integrated disaster waste management system that considers the spatial scale of removal, transport, and treatment of disaster waste. A case study was conducted on combustibles, which is a type of disaster waste derived from dwellings, in Mie Prefecture, Japan. First, we calculated the quantity and the spatial distribution of disaster waste derived from dwellings and tsunami debris produced as a result of a large-scale earthquake. The quantity of disaster waste was estimated as 7,178,000 t with functioning flood-preventing facilities and 11,956,000 t without functioning flood prevention facilities. Ensuring resilience in the face of earthquakes and tsunamis by renovating flood-preventing facilities is extremely important in decreasing the production of wastes, especially in coastal regions. Next, the transportation network for transporting combustibles in disaster waste to temporary storage sites, incineration plants, and landfill was constructed using an optimization model. The results showed that if flood-preventing facilities do not function properly, the installation of temporary incineration facilities becomes essential. Life-cycle emissions of CO2, SOx, NOx, and PM and the costs of removal, storage, and treatment of combustibles were calculated as 258,000 t, 618 t, 1705 t, 7.9 t, and 246 million USD, respectively, in the case of functioning flood preventing facilities. If flood-preventing facilities do not function, the quantity of environmentally unfriendly emissions and the costs increase. This result suggested the significance of renovation in order to maintain the conditions of flood-preventing facilities to decrease the environmental burden and costs as well as keep the production of disaster waste at a minimum.     In recent years, extreme weather events such as heavy rains due to global warrming have been increasing. This causes flood damage in many places in Japan, as river flows increase immediately after heavy rainfall events occur. The damage generates large amounts of waste. Any delay in the processing of this waste interferes with restoration and reconstruction efforts, delaying the return to people's normal lives. Therefore, this study estimated the amount of flood disposal waste generated in a flooded area of the Tama River basin. The results of this study provide important insights into treatments for flood waste disposal.

    Although it is important that disaster waste be demolished and removed as soon as possible after a natural disaster, it is also important that its treatment is environmentally friendly and economic. Local municipalities do not conduct environmental and economic feasibility studies of pre-disaster waste management; nevertheless, pre-disaster waste management is extremely important to promote treatment of waste after natural disasters. One of the reasons that they cannot conduct such evaluations is that the methods and inventory data required for the environmental and economic evaluation does not exist. In this study, we created the inventory data needed for evaluation and constructed evaluation methods using life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost (LCC) methodologies for future natural disasters. We selected the Japanese town of Minami-Ise for the related case study. Firstly, we estimated that the potential disaster waste generation derived from dwellings would be approximately 554,000 t. Based on this result, the land area required for all the temporary storage sites for storing the disaster waste was approximately 55 ha. Although the public domain and private land area in this case study is sufficient, several sites would be necessary to transport waste to other sites with enough space because local space is scarce. Next, we created inventory data of each process such as waste transportation, operation of the temporary storage sites, and waste treatment. We evaluated the environmental burden and cost for scenarios in which the disaster waste derived from specified kinds of home appliances (refrigerators, washing machines, air-conditioners and TV sets) was transported, stored and recycled. In the scenario, CO2, SOx, NOx and PM emissions and total cost were 142 t, 7 kg, 257 kg, 38 kg and 1772 thousand USD, respectively. We also focused on SON emission as a regional pollution source because transportation and operation of the temporary storage sites generates air pollution. If the treatment of all waste were finished in 3 years, the environmental standard would be satisfied by setting work duration to 4.8 h/d. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Although the public domain and private land area in this case study is sufficient, several sites would be necessary to transport waste to other sites with enough space because local space is scarce. Next, we created inventory data of each process such as waste transportation, operation of the temporary storage sites, and waste treatment. We evaluated the environmental burden and cost for scenarios in which the disaster waste derived from specified kinds of home appliances (refrigerators, washing machines, air-conditioners and TV sets) was transported, stored and recycled. In the scenario, CO2, SOx, NOx and PM emissions and total cost were 142 t, 7 kg, 257 kg, 38 kg and 1772 thousand USD, respectively. We also focused on SON emission as a regional pollution source because transportation and operation of the temporary storage sites generates air pollution.     Disaster waste management should be conducted in an environmentally and economically friendly manner, although disaster waste should be demolished and removed as soon as possible after a natural disaster. The aim of this study was to develop methods to conduct environmental and economic evaluation of pre-disaster waste management. A disaster waste management system consists of processes such as transportation, storage and separation at primary and secondary temporary storage sites, incineration, crushing, landfilling and recycling. Firstly, environmental and economic intensity data for each process was created via interview and literature surveys. Then, proposed methods was applied to the disaster waste management related to the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes, which occurred in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan as the case study. Our results indicate that CO2 emission, SOx emission and cost from this disaster waste management method were 390-630 kt, 2,500-3,000 t and 630-710 kUSD. In particular, the SOx emission from such corresponded to 29-35 % of total annual SOx emission in Kumamoto Prefecture. This result revealed that the impact on regional air pollution via managing disaster waste is considerable.

    The paper discusses development of a method for estimating disaster waste that can be potentially generated by a natural disaster in the future for pre-disaster waste management. In particular, this research focuses on micro-disaster waste originating from household consumer durables. We documented the number of household consumer durables and built a mass per unit database of major consumer durables using web-based and statistical surveys. We also estimated present and future figures of disaster waste that can be generated in the study area. The estimated total amount of disaster waste that could be generated in 2015 was 24.1 kt (18.1-29.8 kt) and 108 kt (81.8-133 kt) for Kobe City and Ise-Shima region, respectively. The total quantities of TV sets, air conditioners, refrigerators, and washing machines generated in Kobe and Ise-Shima will range between 10.9 and 22.8 kt (247,000-545,000 units) in 2015, and 10.7 kt to 22.8 kt (249,000-550,000 units) in 2035. The quantity estimated for 2015 is equal to 61 % of the annual processing capacity of Plant A, Japan's leading home appliances recycling plant. Finally, we discussed the contribution of the estimation results and geographic information systems in future recycling planning.

    In this paper, we discuss the social, economic, and environmental aspects of utilizing woody biomass for energy. We first conducted a questionnaire survey to determine which energy utilization methods were preferred in Japan and to collect the data on the cost, workforce, and energy production relevant to each energy utilization method. The results of the survey indicated that energy recovery by direct combustion and combusting wood pellets were the preferred methods. Subsequently, we employed input-output analysis to compare certain factors pertaining to the two preferred energy utilization methods. The factors were compared in relation to energy generation from the unutilized woody biomass in Japan, which amounts to 8.58 million tonne annually. The relevant factors were the social effects of employment creation, the economic effect, and the reduction of CO2 emissions. As a result, however, as direct burning has advantages on 13.7 million tonne of CO2 emission reduction, there are few impacts on increase of production and employment creation. In addition, we found that combusting the wood pellets was advantageous because of the increase in production (981 million USD) and the creation of employment opportunities (24,700 jobs).     The use of waste-to-energy technology as part of a municipal solid waste management strategy could reduce the use of fossil fuels and contribute to prevention of global warming. In this study, we examined current heat and electricity production by incineration plants in Japan for external use. Herein, we discuss specific challenges to the promotion of heat utilisation and future municipal solid waste management strategies. We conducted a questionnaire survey to determine the actual conditions of heat production by incineration plants. From the survey results, information of about 498 incineration plants was extracted. When we investigated the relationship between heat production for external use and population density where incineration plants were located, we found that regions with a population density <1000persons(km(2))(-1) produce <500MJt(-1) of heat. We also found that external use of such energy for factories, markets, and related use, was noted in cities with a population density of 2000 to 4000persons(km(2))(-1). Several incineration plants have poor performance for heat production because there are few facilities near them to provide demand for the energy. This is the result of redundant capacity, and is reflected in the heat production performance. Given these results, we discussed future challenges to creating energy demand around incineration plants where there is presently none. We also examined the challenges involved in increasing heat supply beyond the present situation.

    In this study, we conducted a survey in questionnaire format on the usage time and the quantity of consumer durables that consume energy, relevant to households in Kobe, Japan. Based on the data obtained from the survey, we calculated the rate of energy consumption for each household type. Taking future changes in the number of households in Kobe into consideration, we estimated the future energy consumption in the residential sector.

    This study discussed the electric energy potential of renewable energy in Awaji Island, Japan. In addition, the electric energy self-sufficiency ratio of renewable energy in 2050 was estimated in order to investigate the possibility of achieving 100% electric energy potential through renewable energy. We targeted renewable energy sources such as biomass, wind power, and PV. Firstly, the available energy from biomass was calculated. Next, the electric energy potentials from wind power and PV were also estimated, taking into account the current situation of island operations and future plans for instalment. The 2010 electric energy demand in Awaji Island was then calculated using statistical data. We also designed eight scenarios combining future forecasts of population and GDP and energy shifts.     We investigate the extent to which Japanese people can change their consumption and the corresponding environmental impact. We propose a new analytical framework with a rebound matrix that captures the monetary flow from potential savings to their respending (referred to as rebound). A questionnaire is used to derive the matrix. On average, respondents spent 3.4 million Yen annually, resulting in 12.4 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in their daily lives. The survey results suggest that acceptable spending reductions would correspond to a CO2 emissions reduction of nearly 6%. However, the CO2 emissions would increase by nearly the same amount when the respondents respend their savable money (rebound CO2 emissions). The annual CO2 emissions and the annually reducible CO2 emissions both increase with the increase in annual expenditure. Consequently, the net CO2 emissions also increase with the increase in annual expenditure. The rebound spending is approximated using the rebound matrix. Finally, it is suggested that the net CO2 emissions can be reduced through lifestyle changes whereby spending on energy items is reduced and the resulting savings are spent on telecommunication, clothes, shoes, education, and housing.

    Objective. Although slag produced by the sewage sludge melting process offers the advantage of reducing the final volume that must be landfilled, such recycling also presents an important disadvantage due to emission of abundant greenhouse gases. A trade-off exists in the waste management sector between the life extension of landfill sites and global warming, and appropriate solutions are required to find an appropriate balance between these factors. This study aims to evaluate the environmental impact of slag produced by the sewage sludge melting process and to investigate conditions to promote slag production under trade-off condition.
    Results and Discussion. This study evaluates two cases: (1) slag is produced from sewage sludge and recycled for use in construction materials, and (2) sewage sludge is incinerated and the incineration ash is landfilled. Case studies at a particular treatment plant were conducted for comparative evaluation, and environmental loads of CO2 and final disposal were targeted. CO2 emissions of 1,400 and 500 kg-CO2/tonne were determined for cases (1) and (2), respectively. Then, a comprehensive evaluation of the trade-off between the life extension of the landfill site and global warming was conducted using the distance-to-target method. The indicator value was 89% lower for case (1) than for case (2) when the reduction target of final disposal from FY2011 to FY2030 was 67%. However, this result supposes that all of the slag produced was recycled. Assuming effective utilisation of slag (68%), the difference in the final volume between the two cases would drop to 45%. A sensitivity analysis using distance-to-target method was conducted to investigate the percentage of the final disposal reduction or greenhouse gas target that would be required to revive the results of cases (1) and (2). The results indicated effective utilisation of slag has advantageous comparing with case (2).
    Conclusions. The present study indicates that slag produced by the sewage sludge melting process is important to address the trade-off between life extension of landfill sites and global warming. Moreover, effective utilization of slag is a key factor in determining the effectiveness of slag recycling. Therefore, finding ways to increase the effective utilization should be made a priority.

    Despite the fact that utilization of biomass is important from the viewpoints of global warming issue and energy security, there are technical, economic, and social issues concerning the collection, transportation, and energy recovery of unutilized thinned trees. This study focused on human resource transfer from construction industry to forestry in terms of job development, and a methodology to investigate a possibility of human resource transfer was proposed. Environmental and economic evaluation of additional energy utilization of unutilized thinned trees due to the supposed human resource transfer was also conducted through a case study. To investigate the possibility of the human resource transfer, the business skills of workers from the forestry and construction industries were extracted using questionnaire and literature surveys. Further, the similarity of their business skills was investigated. If the similarity of their skills was high, human resource transfer was assumed to be possible. As a result of the case study, it was concluded that if a human resource transfer were to occur, 80% of unutilized thinned trees could possibly be harvested for generating energy. This effect corresponds to a GHG reduction of 2.4 million tons.

    Municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration is a greenhouse gas (GHG) emitter however, if GHG reductions, achieved by accounting for waste-to-energy, exceed GHG emissions, incineration can be considered as a net GHG reducer. In Japan, only 24.5% of MSW incineration plants perform energy recovery despite 80% of MSW being incinerated therefore, there is great potential to extract more energy from MSW. In this study, the factors that should be considered to achieve net GHG reductions from incineration were analysed from a life cycle perspective. These considerations were then applied to the energy supply requirements in seven Japanese metropolises. Firstly, the carbon footprints of approximately 1500 incineration plants in Japan were calculated. Then, the incineration plants with negative carbon footprint values were classified as net GHG reducers. Next, the processes that contribute to the carbon footprint were evaluated, and two processes - plastic burning and electricity savings - were found to have the greatest influence. Based on the results, the energy supply requirements were analysed and discussed for seven metropolises (Sapporo, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Kobe, Takamatsu and Fukuoka) taking into account the energy demands of households. In Kobe, 16.2% of the electricity demand and 25.0% of the hot water demand could be satisfied by incineration to realise a net GHG reducer, although urban design for energy utilisation would be required. © The Author(s) 2013.

    In this study, the life cycle assessment and life cycle cost were applied for comparison with lighting bulbs and the economic and environmental valuations of the effect of converting traditional lighting bulbs to low-carbon-type lighting bulbs. When an incandescent bulb was converted to a LED lighting bulb, CO2 emission was decreased by 78%. However, when a fluorescent bulb was converted to a LED fluorescent bulb, there was no decrease in CO2 emission. Next, the effect of both types of conversion on the household′s CO2 emission and cost was calculated. As a consequence, annual CO2 emission per household decreased from 73 to 41 kg, and the annual cost decreased from 3,800 to 2,160 JPY. Further, sensitivity analysis was performed by shortening the time for which an occupied compartment was used. The results showed that the effect of converting an incandescent bulb on the reduction in CO2 is higher than the effect of converting a fluorescent bulb.

    This paper discusses the effectiveness of a woody biomass utilization system that would result in increased net energy production through wood pellet production, along with energy recovery processes as they relate to household energy demand. The direct environmental load of the system, including wood pellet production and utilization processes, was evaluated. Furthermore, the indirect load, including the economic impact of converting the existing fossil-fuel-based energy system into a woody biomass-based system, on the entire society was also evaluated. Gifu Prefecture in japan was selected for a case study, which included a comparative evaluation of the environmental load and costs both with and without coordination with the wood pellet production process and the waste-to-energy of municipal solid waste process, using the life cycle assessment methodology. If the release of greenhouse gases from the combustion of wood pellets is included in calculations, then burning wood pellets results in unfavorable environmental consequences. However, when the reduced indirect environmental load due to the utilization of wood pellets versus petroleum is included in calculations, then favorable environmental consequences result, with a net reduction of greenhouse gases emissions by 14,060 ton-CO2eq. The worst fossil fuel in this regard is coal, which is the largest CO2-emitting fossil fuel in terms of weight. Although decreasing the use of coal is difficult because of its increasing demand in worldwide, there is still a possibility of effectively reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by substituting biomass, even for a subset of coal. One way to reduce the use of coal is to implement co-firing of biomass with coal at coal thermal power stations. In this study, the business impact of GHG reduction from semi-carbonized fuel produced by co-firing woody biomass with coal in thermal power plants is evaluated from the perspective of life cycles, using the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The case study area is the central region of Wakayama prefecture, Japan. In this study, a new business is considered whose operations would co-fire the woody biomass with coal. A life cycle inventory (LCI) analysis and a life cycle impact assessment are conducted to evaluate the GHG emissions, taking into account processes such as cutting timber, manufacturing semi-carbonized fuel, and co-firing with coal. LCI data was collected and calculated on the basis of the feasibility study and literature survey. The spatial distribution of the woody biomass was ascertained using a geographic information system, and the location of several facilities and a road transportation network were determined. Results showed that an annual reduction in GHG emissions of approximately 46,700 tonnes in the case study area is possible if the business is executed. The environmental impact taking into account climate change, acidification and land use was also reduced. As the result, this business is in fact advantageous to reduce GHG emissions as well as the environmental impact. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Steps taken to counter the climate change problem have a significant impact on the municipal solid waste management (MSW) sector, which must tackle regional environmental problems such as the shortage of sanitary landfills, especially in Japan. Moreover, greenhouse gas emissions and final disposal have a trade-off relationship. Therefore, alleviation of both these environmental problems is difficult, and Japanese local municipalities are anxious for action to solve these problems and reduce treatment costs. Although ambitious waste management measures have been enacted in many countries, they appear to lack a holistic view and do not adopt a life cycle approach. Therefore, it is important to reconstruct the MSW management system, taking into account environmental and economic aspects. In the present study, life cycle assessment and mathematical modelling were used to seek ways of redesigning the MSW management system in order to minimize environmental impacts and/or reduce treatment costs. One economic block was selected as the study area (Iwate Prefecture in Japan). The life cycle inventory and costs data for every MSW transportation and treatment process in this region were collected and processed. Then, taking account of geographic information, an optimal solution for the minimization of environmental impact or treatment costs was derived. To solve the trade-off problem, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to find optimal reduction targets for climate change and final disposal.

    In order to better understand the amount of self disposed waste materials, and what methods are generally being employed, we conducted a survey in central Iwate Prefecture on the composition of household waste. Our survey results indicate that the main method of self disposal is composting; measuring in at approximately 90 grams/person/dayby 2.6%. We then evaluated both environmental and economic effects of waste self disposal from the viewpoint of MSW management systems. In this evaluation, regional property of household waste disposal and the waste treatment structure had to be taken into account. Results show that, compared to the current scenario, the promotion of non-electric composters decreases GHG emissions, with final disposal lessened by 6.2% and a decrease of 6.5% in treatment costs seen. By contrast, the promotion of electric composters brings certain disadvantages with regard to GHG emission, SOx and NOx emissions, and treatment costs.

    本研究では、ごみ分別の価値と負担感に関する議論を踏まえ、コンジョイント分析を用いて住民の考える分別の価値と負担を定量的に評価した。その結果、分別の価値はその負担を上回ること、分別収集の方法によって負担感が変化することを確認した。さらに、一部の分別方法の支払意志額が、住民が分別せず行政が分別する場合を上回ったことに注目し、その理由として分別行動自体が住民の「分別はごみを出した者の責任」という意識を満足させる効用があるという可能性を指摘した。

    Previously, containers and packaging materials (CPMs) were disposed by each municipal government. Presently, they are being recycled in recycling facilities after the enforcement of the Containers and Packaging Recycling Law (CPR Law). To quantify the recycling impact of CPMs on the environment and the economy, this paper estimates and assesses the variation of environmental load and costs of each municipal government. It also calculated the CO2 emissions volume and costs on each stage by aggregate method. This study apprehended a CO2 emission reduction by about 35, 000 tons and an increased in cost by 1, 160 hundred-million yen after the CPR Law enforcement.

In this study, these ones were evaluated by conjoint analysis as one of the valuated evaluation method. This method was applied to citizen of Nagoya city as a questionnaire. Then, value of services that citizen is thinking was evaluated.

    近年、循環資源の国際貿易が環境や経済に及ぼす影響が問題となっている。本研究では、日本・中国間における廃電気・電子情報機器(E-waste)のマテリアルサイクルをマテリアルフロー分析により把握した。また、資源性(3R)、汚染性(CO2排出量)の側面からフローの現状評価を行い、それらの指標が改善されるようなマテリアルフローの方向性を考察した。結果として、E- wasteのリサイクルの有効性とリサイクルを優先すべき物質、ボトルネックとなっている未成熟な中国のリサイクルシステムの改善の必要性、日本のスクラップを中国でリサイクルすることの効果などを明らかにするとともに、合理的な国際資源循環の方向性を提案した。

    One method of establishing a new society involving low environmental load, a so-called "recycling-based society," is to recycle waste. If waste is incinerated, energy may be produced. However, if waste is to be converted to new raw materials or products, it is likely that energy will have to be provided. The extent of waste recovery affects the energy balance in the recycle process. Energy supply and demand is, hence, a key concept in making a recycling based society a feasible proposition. The main objective of this study was to develop a method of assessing the optimal extent of a recycling based society from the viewpoint of energy balance. The method is as follows. Energy consumption in the recovery process is estimated using the distribution of waste discharge sites and recycling facility locations having the minimum waste transport distance. The energy consumption in the conversion process and the energy supply in the incineration process are estimated using specific data from existing recycle and incineration facilities. The proper extent of recovery is one in which energy demand is equal to energy supply. As an example, we apply the method to the Aichi Prefecture in Japan and propose an effective industrial waste transport system for the region. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    A waste management in recycle-based society is required to promote an appropriate waste treatment such as waste prevention and 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and to restrain an environmental impact by the waste treatment. In this study, the material balance table was designed that input and output balances of materials such as resource, goods and waste between arterial flow and venous flow is possible to treat systematically. This table was utilized to evaluate the feasibility of waste management policy in Aichi prefecture and was investigated the utility value as the tool to evaluate the policy.

    A cascade recycling is a proper method to increase resource productivity. However, actual waste recycling system doesn't take advantage of this recycling. In this study, a model of a waste paper recycling system with the cascade recycling was proposed, and an evaluation of the effectively of the cascade recycling by the resource productivity and the economic efficiency on this model. As a result, the cascade recycling is effective about increasing of the productivity and the economic efficiency. The planner should take consideration of the resource productivity and the economic efficiency into the actual waste paper-recycling system.

In this study, to realize the waste recycling process to design a new society with low environmental load, 3 matters were investigated; 1) grasp of spatial distribution of waste discharge, 2) transportation between waste discharge site and recycling facility and 3) allocation of recycling facility in region that a energy consumption in waste transportation is minimized and treatment volume per recycling facility is appropriate.

    This study aims to propose walkable city planning that incorporates frailty protection for the elderly using the Sannomiya Redevelopment Project in Kobe, Japan as a case study. A questionnaire survey was administered to 197 visitors to the Sannomiya area, which included questions on their current level of frailty, factors considered when selecting walking routes, and the number of steps taken in the selected area. Main results revealed that 8.4% and 16.1% of the early- and late-elderly respondents considered themselves frail. Additional results suggested that respondents ranked green space as the most important factor in selecting a walking route, and the route’s environment was important for respondents who were anxious about their physical abilities. Respondents who valued rest facilities tended to go on more walks, suggesting that the establishment of rest facilities increases the total number of steps taken.

    This study aims to propose methods for the sustainable business strategy of a mobile grocery store business, focusing on Kobe City, Japan as a case study. A questionnaire survey was conducted to grasp users’ awareness of the mobile grocery store and their shopping behavior with 200 users of each sales course, which were classified between those inhabiting commuter towns and rural/mountainous areas. The results revealed that users in rural/mountainous areas further used the mobile grocery store for creating communication than users in commuter towns. Moreover, even for sales courses in areas that are classified as having vulnerable shoppers by definition, the difficulty of shopping is relatively minor among users in commuter towns. Such courses suggest that the need for measures for vulnerable shoppers might be low. This study argued that the sustainable operation of the mobile grocery store business requires cooperation not only from mobile vendors, but also from local governments and users themselves.

    本研究では、アンケート調査に基づいて、消費者の節約行動に伴う環境へのリバウンド効果について明らかにした。アンケート調査は、ウェブアンケートを用いて、経常支出金額、節約可能金額、将来支出金額について、支出項目ごとにモニターに回答してもらい、消費者の節約行動に伴うリバウンド効果を分析した。本研究により、節約や貯蓄による将来的な支出を考慮しても、節約行動に伴って環境負荷が減少する可能性が示唆された。

    本研究では、地域の家庭ごみ組成、自家処理や集団回収などごみ処理フローを考慮して、一般廃棄物処理システムを設計するための手法を検討した。対象地域は岩手県中央部とし、廃棄物処理施設のLCIの整備、家庭ごみの組成調査や処理フローの実態把握を行った。次に、ごみ処理広域化について、ごみ処理技術と処理政策に関する複数のシナリオを提案するとともに、CO2排出量、コストからみた評価を行った。

    2021年度はこれまでのバリ島フィールド調査写真から祭祀に関わる植物についてチャナン(宗教的儀式に使用するお供え物)を中心に抽出、整理を行うとともに、バリ島での住民のライフスタイルについて文献調査を開始した。 バリ人にとってバリヒンドゥの世界観を表すチャナンの作成とお供えは日常的に行われており、その材料の消費量は非常に多い。これまで、バリヒンドゥと類似した宗教的基盤を持つネパールヒンドゥの祭祀植物を調査した結果、オレンジ色のマリーゴールドの大量使用と依存を明らかにしてきたが、バリヒンドゥでの植物利用は、ネパールヒンドゥとは異なる点が多い。 バリ島のチャナンには様々な植物、お供えの食べ物が添えられており、2009年、2012年、2020年の現地写真を見るとチャナンの材料とされる花はアジサイ、ホウセンカ、プルメリア、センニチコウ、ハイビスカス、マリーゴールドなど多くの色鮮やかな種が用いられている。この種の選択には宗教上の方位と色の関係があり、対象とする色を有する花であれば使用され、種の限定は見られない。特にマリーゴールドに着目すると、チャナンにおける西は黄色の花が必要とされることからマリーゴールドが使用されることが多いが、2009年ではオレンジ色よりも黄色のマリーゴールドが好まれているように見える。写真画像の枚数に偏りがあるため、この検証は今後必要になる。バリ島では、宗教的な方位と色の関係性により使用される植物が選択されることから、植物種への依存は低く、材料入手の容易さと資源量によって利用される植物は変化すると思われる。 一方、祭祀に用いられる植物は、その国のライフスタイルが大きく関わっている可能性がある。心理学者のアドラーによると、ライフスタイルの構築には文化や子供時代の経験・創造性が関わっているとされことからも2022年度は現地住民への聞き取り調査を重点的行う予定である。

    社会基盤整備プロジェクトのLCAにはSocial/Dynamic LCA概念の具体化が必要であることを示し、各社会システムに対してLCAを実施したところ、以下に示す成果を得た。 1.交通・流通システム:1)道路改良事業の事業計画段階において、環境負荷削減効果を自動車走行への波及効果を含めて定量的・包括的に評価するための方法論を構築し、自動車走行状況に応じた削減効果の発現条件を明らかにした。2)航空路線を削減し新幹線輸送に転換させることの有効性について、LCAを導入して検証を行う方法を提案し、新幹線整備をCO_2排出量の観点から評価した。3)容器入り清涼飲料水の流通段階の環境負荷排出の内訳をLCAにより詳細に分析し、流通・販売形態によってLC-CO_2が大きく異なることを明らかにした。 2. 廃棄物処理・上下水道システム:1)ごみ処理事業を対象とし、中長期視点から処理施設の維持・更新とごみ処理に係るLCC、LC-CO_2を算出することで、将来からみた現在のごみ処理施策の実施効果を評価するモデルを開発した。地方都市でのケーススタディでは、現在のごみ処理施策実施に伴うLCC、LC-CO_2を積算し、これらを削減するための処理政策を提案・評価した。2)生活排水処理システムについて、計画段階でLCAを適用のするために必要な原単位を整理・分析し、実際の計画へ適用したところ、排水処理技術の進展についても考慮が必要なことが明らかになった。 3. 都市システム:1)地域施策や活動にLCAを適用する際の課題を整理し、地域性の表現、地域間相互依存の考慮といったLCAの手法面で検討が必要な項目を明らかにした。2)郊外型商業開発のLCAを用いた分析の枠組みを整理し、時系列的な変化を考慮することの必要性や統計データの精度に改善の余地があることを示した。 なお、日本LCA学会誌Vol.5 No.1(2009年1月発行)において、研究分担者・加藤博和が幹事を務めた特集:「社会システムのLCA:Social/Dynamic LCAの確立を目指して」は、本研究の成果公表の一環として位置づけられている。

    本研究では、バイオマス新技術開発とこれに関連する社会技術について整理し、その社会・経済的インパクトを事前に評価する手法を開発した。この評価手法の特長は、混合相補性問題により定式化され、環境分野に固有の現象を扱うことができる点にある。また、岐阜県においてこの手法を用いたインパクト評価を実施し、一般廃棄物処理事業との連携が有効であること、バイオマス発電の発電効率が上昇すると普及の可能性があることなどを明らかにした。

    Natural resource should be evaluated as a total net benefit of each using stage from here on, however, it is often estimated as usage value of one shot or much restricted time in the real world. On the other hand, the pricing of recycled resource depends largely on how much cost is needed to procure it, therefore it tends to be too short recycling usage. As a matter of course, a series of policies and institutions related with Circulated Society have a purpose to solve this problem, but the effect is rather doubtful, because these are philosophy oriented and type of quantified regulation. This research basically aims at evaluating the effect of these ones in a quantitative approach. Firstly, an elaborate model of cascade recycling paper was specified. After calculating an optimization simulation, it shows the possibility of existence of inefficiency due to compulsory usage of no available some recycled waste-paper. Secondly, a generational accounting method was applied to the production function analysis of paper industry with a time series data for 20 years as monthly quotas. The indexes, elasticity of substation, value of marginal productivity and market price, rate of marginal substitution are derived for each virgin paper pulp and recycled ones. As a result, it was shown that the pricing pattern of virgin pulp is rather marginal productivity oriented, and for some recycled papers, the industry seems not to behave as a rational principal agent, but merely use the amount of old paper supplied from the society as input to produce papers.
