■ Paper- This paper examines an understudied type of the English there-existential con-struction that is used to describe a mental experience which accompanies a cer-tain state denoted by the gerund form (e.g., There is comfort in knowing that other people felt the same way). It can be observed that the preposition in of the final prepositional phrase of the construction is sometimes omitted, making a formal variant which exhibits no semantic/functional departure from the full-form variant. This will then be argued to be problematic for the view which strictly follows the functional principle that stipulates an isomorphic relation-ship between formal differences and semantic/functional distinctions. From the perspective of Construction Grammar, it will be shown that the problem can be resolved by referring to horizontal links that connect structurally different con-structions; in contrast to well researched types of there-existential construction, the construction in question is horizontally linked to a transitive-verb construc-tion in which the subject refers to who has the mental experience denoted by the object. It will then be suggested that this horizontal link is responsible for the observed formal variation. Lastly, the issue of formulating a principle for free formal variation in grammar will be addressed.Mar. 2025, Osaka University Papers in Comparative and Contrastive Linguistics, 2, 65 - 73, EnglishResearch institution

- Linguistic creativity has been studied in multidisciplinary research fields including theoretical and applied linguistics, stylistics, sociolinguistics, literary studies, communication studies, cultural studies, media studies, anthropology, and education. However, there is no agreement on the factors that motivate the creative use of language. This paper reviewed case studies of linguistic analysis of creativity and argued that linguistic creativity involves at least three factors: markedness of construal, rhetorical effect, and deviation from the norm. First, cognitive linguistic studies on personal pronouns in English reveal that a creative expression reflects marked cognitive construal involving subjectivity. Second, rhetorical studies on framing show that metaphors yield rhetorical effects to create a new perspective on communicative situations, which can lead to changes in cognition, emotion, and action. Third, research on Japanese-as-a-second-language learners points out that misuse by learners includes features of novel expression that may give rise to new uses by native speakers. Cognitive linguistics, rhetoric, and second language acquisition research have shared an interest in linguistic creativity, but few attempts have been made to integrate the knowledge acquired by individual studies. Future work will include empirical research focusing on a single linguistic phenomenon involving creativity from different theoretical angles, which will shed new light on the theory of linguistic creativity.神戸大学大学院国際文化学研究科, Mar. 2024, 国際文化学研究, (61) (61), 1 - 33, Japanese, Domestic magazine[Refereed]Research institution
- Cappelle (2006) formulated the “allostruction” model to capture the close link between two word-order variants of the particle placement alternation in transitive English verb-particle combinations (i.e. [verb – particle – object] vs. [verb – object – particle]). The model has raised awareness of the possibility that paradigmatic (“horizontal”) links across constructions with formal differences, in addition to long established “vertical” links, play a key role in pursuing the speaker’s knowledge of language in the Construction Grammar enterprise; it has generated a number of analyses, and has also sparked considerable discussion on its viability and limitations. Against this background, this paper will take up two recent critical arguments about the allostruction model, which claim that the model should not be applied as widely (or freely) as originally envisioned by Cappelle. In light of these, I present a tentative hypothesis that, as for linguistics units (“constructions”) larger than the phrasal level, the allostructional relation only holds between exactly two variants which are minimally distinguished in form. This, I argue, will avoid the problem of the allostructional “inflation” under one and the same supercategoy (“constructeme”). I then suggest that some restrictions are required for this model to be more of a viable theoretical tool to investigate the “constructicon” of the speaker.神戸大学大学院国際文化学研究科, Nov. 2023, Journal of Interculatural Studies, (60) (60), 51 - 68, Japanese, Domestic magazine[Refereed]Research institution

First, it was claimed that the construction with look at indicates one’s contrasting evaluations about a targeted entity. Second, building upon the finding that a set of instances of the specific sub-construction with see are semantically connected with an idiomatic construction for all to see, it was shown that for all to see is composed of a cluster of constructions. Both of these results strongly support the methodology as advanced in the cognitive school of construction grammar.
