- Leandrios, the Milesian historian of the early Hellenistic period, claims that Cleochos, the grandfather of the founding hero of the city of Miletus, was buried in the Didymaion, the Apolline oracular sanctuary near the city. Despite the recent interpretation by Polito, based on Sourvinou-Inwood's theory, it is unlikely that either Cleochos or his grand son, Miletos, the eponymous founding hero, was regarded as autochthonous by the ancient Milesians. The story reported by Leandrios must be a version of accounts of the Cretan foundation of Miletus, not an episode of a myth of autochthony. While the name of Cleochos was plausibly already known in the 5th century BC, his burial in Didyma had not been mentioned before Leandrios, as far as we know. The burial of the grandfather of the founding hero in the famous sanctuary was plausibly invented in the early Hellenistic period or, if not invented out of thin air, paid much more attention to than before. The fresh start for Miletus in this period would have created among the citizens a lively sense of communal identity and interest in local myths. Moreover, the revival of the Didymaean Oracle, the foundation of the gigantic temple and Miletus' diplomatic negotiations with the Seleucid kings and Greek cities, especially their own 'colonies', must have made the Milesians highly conscious of the importance of Didyma, one of the most valuable elements of their symbolic capital. Besides, among other newly founded or re-founded Ionian cities, the Milesians may have tried to distinguish themselves from the others by claiming a mythical origin for their own city and their important mantic sanctuary dating back to the heroic age.The Classical Society of Japan, Mar. 2013, Journal of Classical Studies, 61, 12 - 23, Japanese, Domestic magazine[Refereed]Scientific journal

- From the late fifth century, those who participated regularly in politics as quasi-professional politicians mamly came from wealthy families This was because politicians received no remuneration for their 'active political activities', such as moving decrees and bringing accusations, and they could not engage in their own work themselves while they were engaged in these political activities Moreover they were required to perform liturgies and sometimes faced the danger of being prosecuted by their political rivals and being heavily fined In addition to these economic aspects, those who belo...Classical Society of Japan, Mar. 2001, Journal of Classical Studies, 49, 98 - 107, Japanese[Refereed]

Although many factors must have contributed to the formation of such features, efficient transmission of relevant knowledge must have been highly critical. This research project brought together Japanese scholars working on the ancient Greek and Roman history, the classical archaeology, the ancient philosophy, the art history, and Egyptology, with a view to understanding the nature of various media, such as the colloquial, the textual, and the visual ones, and clarified their intricate and effective combination that enabled the productive transmission of knowledge in the ancient Mediterranean world including Egypt.

Hence this research project was organized to elucidate the characteristics and significance of the Plutarchan opera: special emphasis was placed on the cooperation of philosophical, historical, and literary specialities, the combination of philologically minute reading and broad survey of the historical milieu, along with the reassessment of the oeuvre in the medium and long term perspective of classical antiquity. The project members produced manifold output in the form of articles, conference papers, and books; the fruit of the cooperative efforts was presented at the 66th Annual General Meetings of the Classical Society of Japan and the 64th issue of the Journal of Classical Studies; moreover, publication of further outcome is forthcoming.

The Milesians in the Classical period made use of 'Ionian migration mythes' on their own initiative in order to establish good relationship with Athens, the most powerful city-state, and to differentiate themselves from the other Ionians. 2. While the Athenians in the fifth century also shared 'Ionian' identity, they gradually developed the 'autochthonous' myth and identity as their imperialistic leanings intensified. However, the contemporary intellectuals in Athens seem to have been perplexed by this newly developed myth and identity. 3. In the Hellenistic period, the Milesians began to promote the mythes on Apollo and those concerning the Minoan period, rather than 'Ionian migration mythes'. Since the oracular sanctuary at Didyma, which was rebuilt at the beginning of the Hellenistic period, became important 'cultural capital', the Milesians made use of the mythes related to Didyma in order to win favour of Hellenistic kings and to be superior to other cities around Miletus.Competitive research funding
- Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), 2010 - 2012, Principal investigatorThis research aims to investigate the significance of international friendships, especially xenia and proxenia, in the eastern Mediterranean World from the 5th to 3rd century BC. I have pointed out, first of all, that personal international friendships were valuable and hereditary as a form of political capital within democratic Athens, as elsewhere in the Greek world and beyond. Secondly, while personal connections with foreign states and leaders were theoretically hereditary, they were in practice not exclusive to a limited number of established political families but open to newcomers. Athens under democracy had a high degree of social mobility also in this sphere.Competitive research funding

ATHENS, PERSIA, CLAZOMENAE, ERYTHRAE : AN ANALYSIS OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS IN ASIA MINOR AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 4TH CENTURY BCE.'として、『Bulletin of the Institute of Classical Studies』誌第49号(2006年)に掲載される予定である。
