    En 2005, la Belgique fete la 175eme annee de son independance et la 25eme annee de sa federalisation. De nombreuses ceremonies, expositions et publications sont projetees sous le label "175-25" principalement par les gouvernements-federal, regionaux et communautaires. Contrastant avec cette volonte officielle d'affirmer une Belgique unie, la conscience nationale parmi le public belge semble de plus en plus s'estomper aujourd'hui. Nous allons ici reconsiderer, dans ce pays dont l'identite nationale devient ambigue, la question fondamentale posee au cours de nos longues recherches sur la litterature belge de langue francaise du XIXeme siecle: "la litterature belge existe-t-elle?". La reponse a cette question est necessairement un jugement hypothetique et subjectif, variable selon la situation de chacun. Il reste neanmoins pertinent d'examiner la relation entre la litterature et les conditions linguistiques ou ethniques de l'etat-nation. Pour cela, nous reflechirons d'abord sur la variete des conceptions de la nation en Belgique, qui rend difficile de definir l'identite de la litterature belge. Apres le XIXeme siecle ou elle se limitait presque a une litterature de langue francaise, le XXeme siecle vit la separation des litteratures francophone et neerlandophone, accompagnee de la creation des Communautes culturelles. Letablissement d'organes et de systemes separes, tels que l'Academie, le Prix litteraire, des publications d'histoires de la litterature belge, etc., a deplace la litterature "nationale" vers le niveau communautaire. Dans cet etat actuel de coexistence de diverses identites-belge, francophone, flamande ou meme bruxelloise bilingue-nous pourrons apercevoir, avec des exemples d'auteurs contemporains comme Toussaint et Nothomb ou du XIXeme siecle comme Maeterlinck et Rodenbach, un sens de l'"expatrie". Le melange d'une conscience de soi europeenne, belge, bruxelloise, ou meme francaise, forme un monde litteraire totalement original. Cette "absence de centre" est peutetre l'une des caracteristiques de la "belgicite". La possibilite de survie de l'Etat belge commence a etre mise en doute, mais la diversite et l'attitude de "fuite"-dans un sens positif-de l'expatrie dans la litterature belge resteront, comme dans toutes les autres litteratures "mineures" ou de "frontiere", un defi en meme temps qu'une emulation pour la litterature "majeure".

  • Post-marginality and transnational transformation in French language literature in Quebec, Belgium and Switzerland

    This study about French-language literature centered on Quebec and Belgium focused on Wajdi Mouawad, a Lebanese dramatist who is based in Quebec. Furthermore, it includes a Vietnamese-French expressionist artist Kim Thuy who moved to Quebec as a refugee, and also focused on Kenan Gorgun, who moved to Belgium as a Turkish immigrant and works creatively in French. We examined that the works from the above-mentioned artists are accepted beyond the framework of immigrant and refugee literature. We demarcated trans-transit throughout the French-speaking world, and we brought forward the situation about transnational transformation.

  • A theatrical art environmental international comparative study -For construction of an intellectual support system-

    1.We investigated how result of humanities scientific study about a stage work was reflected for presentation contents and a person of appreciation. The area that we investigated was each Europe country, Asia, Japan, but we stood on a point of view of historic transformation in the case. 2.We tried construction of an intellectual support system through fact-finding in each place. Cooperation with introduction of a Dramaturgie system, substantiality of an academic information organization about theatrical art, a university I a research organization and an art culture institution / an art cultural organization, training system at a university of theatrical art employment, support system of intellect for a citizen's artwork, ideal method of a review to activate theatrical art. 3.We clarified a problem of culture environment maintenance from the viewpoint of culture political science.

    This research aimed for the clarification of the relationship between the identity of European cultures and racial awareness in the European nations with a specific focus on the dynamic situations concerning with multi-lingual and multi-dimensional aspects of historical and present-day Europe. Our research target consisted of (1) the cultural conflicts and fusions historically evidenced in the examples of Ancient Greco-Roman civilizations, Habsburg Empires, and present day Belgium, (2) the cultural trans-national movements of the educated people who actually crossed the borders of the nations. By so doing, we have clarified the dynamic mechanism of the way a certain degree of universal values was generated through the interactions between neighboring cultures in this multi-lingual and multi-faceted region of Europe. As our academic fields cover from ancient Greece, Roman empires, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, U.K, East Europe and Russia, we took a corroborative approach, which was both inter-disciplinary and trans-national, by which to going deep into the specific cultural issues and highlight a phenomenon unique to Europe. As a result, we presented an interesting picture of what shaped the European cultures as they are today, which seem to be randomly plural but somehow so interrelated with each other's. This task would have been otherwise difficult by a simple accumulation of individual researches. It is also significant in that this model of the identity making among various cultures, whose origins were arguably shared but historically sharply individualized, can shed a light on the present society of Japan, which faces the waves of "internationalization". We are sure our results could be so shared and utilized that the European experiences in seeking the identity among a lot of variables be a beneficial reference to the present day Japan. It is our pleasure, too, this research spawned so many books and research papers listed below.

  • COSMOPOLITANISM AND NATIONALISM IN EUROPE

    The aim of this project is to conduce to a better understanding of Europe, focusing on the paired notions of cosmopolitanism and nationalism. The process we took was as tollows : 1.We collected and analyzed not only literary works, itineraries and memoirs but also magazines and journals that concern cosmopolitanism and nationalism in Europe. 2.We held monthly meetings, where each member brought up a topic and had a vigorous discussion on it. 3.We invited Hiroshi Takayama, Professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University, and Haruo Arikawa, Associate Professor at Gakushu-in University, to get helpful advice and make fruitful discussion. 4.Each member prepared a report of his research to be compiled with other records into the booklet that we submit here. The cold war having been ended, Europe is assuming an aspect of nationalistic disorder--racial and religious--while it is earnestly groping for its unity as EU.As historical hindsight we paid particular attention to the period of territorial and military instabilities in Europe caused by the Revolutionary Wars following the French Revolution. It was characterized on the one hand by the attempt to estabilsh worldwide dominions of the grent powers and the exaltation of mationailsm on the side of backward natioas and on the other by mutual acquaintanceship of refugee onbles and the sweep of cosmopolitanism that presented itself as a fad for traveling since the eighteenth century. We cooperated to enlarge the field of our work, groping for an interdisciplinary study integrating the matters of Europe as a whole. This project has brought us a good grasp of the concept of women in Europe as well as the profitable acquisition of an idea of Europe through multilingual analysis of the ambiguous terms of "cosmopolitanism" and "nationalism."
