- The dispersion properties of the absorption coefficients [α(ν)] of different multi-component silicate oxide glasses have been studied in the frequency region below the boson peak by using THz-time-domain spectroscopy. The value of α(ν)/ν2 has been shown to exhibit a minimum level (R) at low frequency and subsequently a linear increase in the form of r(ν/νBP + E) with increasing frequency, where νBP is the boson peak frequency and R, r, and E are material-specific constants. It has also been found that R ∝ r and E is a constant common to most glasses. This α(ν)/ν2 behavior is ascribed to the dispersion property of the light-vibration coupling coefficient under the reasonable vibrational density of state function. The minimum (constant) and linear terms of the α(ν)/ν2 spectrum are originated from the physical/chemical disorder-induced charge fluctuations in the long-range scale (constant term) and short-range scale (linear term), respectively. The fluctuating charge (σ1) caused by uncorrelated, long-range disorders has primary significance for determining the sub-THz absorption dispersion properties, and its value has been determined for each glass material.AIP Publishing, Feb. 2024, Journal of Applied Physics, 135(8) (8), English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Low dimensional ZnO-based materials have drawn much attention for the past few decades due to their unique electronic and optical properties and potential applications in optoelectronic devices. In this Tutorial, we will cover the past and the latest developments in ZnO thin films and micro/nanostructures in terms of excitonic and related lasing processes. First, we give a brief overview of structural and band properties of ZnO along with the linear optical and excitonic properties. Second, we introduce a feedback mechanism for lasing in various forms of ZnO, ranging from nanoparticles to nanowires, nanodisks, and thin films. As for the feedback mechanism, detailed descriptions are given to random lasing, Fabry–Pérot lasing, and whispering gallery mode lasing. Third, we discuss possible gain mechanisms, i.e., excitonic gain and electron–hole plasma (EHP) gain, in ZnO. A special interest is also devoted to the Mott carrier density, which is a crucial parameter to distinguish between excitonic and EHP contributions to lasing. - Ab-initio molecular orbital calculations have been performed on the cluster modeling the medium-range structure of TeO_2 glass at the Hartree-Fock level. The calculations have reasonably reproduced a neutron radial distribution function and Raman spectrum observed for TeO_2 glass. The calculated results have also demonstrated that the short- and medium-range structures of TeO_2 glass cannot be interpreted in terms of the structural unit of either α-TeO_2 or β-TeO_2 crystal, suggesting that TeO_2 glass has an inherent structure that can not be found in the corresponding crystals.The Ceramic Society of Japan, Mar. 1997, Journal of the Ceramic Society of Japan, 105(1219) (1219), 201 - 205, Japanese

- Visible luminescence from octadecylsilane monolayers on silica surfaces : Time-resolved photoluminescence characterizationWe have found that the adsorption of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) monolayers on nanometer-sized silica particles yields a broad blue photoluminescence (PL) with a time scale of nanoseconds. The observed PL intensity increases after curing at temperatures from 100 to 300℃, suggesting that condensations between adjacent OTS molecules on the silica surface are related to the PL. The PL decay curve of the cured samples remains unchanged from 77 to 450K, whereas the time-integrated PL intensity shows a monotonous decrease with increasing temperature. - The Structure of Soda-Lime-Silicate Glass and Melt by X-ray Diffraction Method (SOLID STATE CHEMISTRY-Amorphous Materials)The structure of soda-lime-silicate(16Na2O・10CaO・74SiO2) glass and melt (~1500°C) was investigated by X-ray diffraction method in combination with molecular dynamics(MD) calculation. The short- and intermediate range structure of the glass was investigated as a function of temperature by using MD simulation. The experimental results clearly show that there is no distinct difference in structure between the present glass and melt. We also found from MD calculation that the linkage of Si-O network made of SiO4 tetrahedra shows similarities between glass and melt. It is also found that the first sharp diffraction peak(FSDP) associated with intermediate range structure is contributed from the correlation between Na+(or Ca2+) and SiO4 network.Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University, Mar. 2001, ICR annual report, 7, 22 - 23, English
- Structure and Formation Mechanism of Ge Related Paramagnetic Centers in Ge-Doped Silica Glass (SOLID STATE CHEMISTRY-Amorphous Materials)We have performed ab initio quantum chemical calculations on clusters of atoms modeling a divalent Ge defect in Ge-doped SiO2 glasses. It has been found that the divalent Ge defect interacts with a nearby GeO4 tetrahedron, forming complex structural units that are responsible for the observed photoabsorption band at ~ 5eV. From the results of infrared and Raman measurements, it has been shown that the network structure of the fully sintered transparent sample is, on average, comparable to that of the bulk silica glass. However, the FESEM image of the sintered fumed silica demonstrates that the resulting transparent sample still has boundary and interface regions derived from the original fumed silica particles. Time-resolved PL measurements have revealed that the PL spectrum of the sintered transparent sample consists at least of three emission bands located at -410, -360, and -510 nm. These three PL bands are characterized respectively by different decay curves in different times scales. We suggest that a trap-controlled diffusion of the photoexcited electrons is responsible for the slow stretched exponential PL component. On the other hand, the fast pure exponential PL component results from radiative recombinations of electron-hole pairs before experiencing the above dispersive diffusion process. The -360-nm PL band shows a pure exponential decay in the time scale of microseconds. The observed pure exponential decay implies that the electronic states related to the 〜360-nm PL emission are localized and can be represented simply by a two state model. Although similar UV PL bands have been reported in oxidized porous silicon and porous silica, the decay time (〜μs) of present 〜360-nm PL is much longer than that of the previously reported ones (〜ns), suggesting that these PL bands have different origins.

The photo-chemistry of Ge-related defects and photorefractivity in Ge-doped silica glasses and development of the photo-active organic-inorganic hybrid materials were carried out. 1. Photo-activity of Ge-related centers and enhanced photorefractivity in Ge-doped silica glasses The most photo-active Ge-related center was found to be Ge^<2+> in silica glasses, which largely depends on the local structure of the Ge^<2+>-centers, whose activation energy of structural rearrangement responsible for photorefractive index change decreased with increasing the degree of freedom for the formation of illide structure (higher coordination structure). On the basis of the obtained results, highly photoactive Ge-doped silica glass thin film was deposited by CVD method, which exhibited >10^<-3> refractive index change by KrF excimer laser irradiation. The channel waveguides were directly written by laser irradiation. The waveguide Bragg grating was fabricated the direct writing technique. 2. Micro-fabrication of organosiloxane containing photo-active substitutents Micro-structures were fabricated in organosiloxane materials through photo-polymerization. The degree of polymerization of siloxane main chain and organic side group was independently controlled by the preparation conditions. Optical propoerties of the resultant materials were designed using the wide variety of material and fabrication parameters. 3. Photo-thermal micro-fabrication of organic-inorganic hybrid materials The micro photonic structures were fabricated in the low-melting transparent hybrid materials through photo-thermal processes using heat generated by nonradiative phonon emission of excited ions or dyes. A very low power laser source less than several mW can be used for the micro fabrication because the materials to be fabricated exhibited low-melting point less than 200℃
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), KYOTO UNIVERSITY, 2000 - 2003Development of low-melting glasses containing organic molecules for photoinduced refractive index changeTransparent materials with a large figure-of-merit(FOM) are strongly required to realize active photonic devices for the optical telecommunication and the photonic information processing. Although organic molecules generally show excellent optical nonlinear properties, their chemical durability is relatively low for the practical applications. In addition, some of inorganic single crystals exhibit enough FOM, but they have difficulty in preparation and fabrication into various forms such as thin film, waveguides, and so on. Inorganic glasses have excellent both the excellent chemical durability and workability. However, their FOM for photonic applications are relatively low. Glasses with low-melting temperatures so-called low melting glasses can be doped with various functional organic molecules. Low-melting glasses presently available usually contain lead or other heavy metal cations, which are unsuitable for environmental protection. In the present study, attempt has been made to develop new family of low-melting glasses capable of doping with optical functional organic molecules. We focused on the development of organic-inorganic hybrid glasses with a large photorefractive index change. Silica related materials with a photorefractive index change exceeding 10^<-3> order have been developed and micro fabricated in planer waveguide by laser direct writing technique. In addition, novel hybrid glass system prepared through non-aqueous acid-base reactions is proposed, which can be doped with various active centers. Now, however, the glasses are just a holder of organic molecules. New materials with synergetic effect of organic molecules and glass host is expected for the further research on the present materials.

An electron cyclotron plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition apparatus, which is suitable for producing planar fluoride glass films, was developed. 2. ZnF_2-BaF_2 thin films were prepared on CaF2(111) substrates by an ECR plasma-enhanced CVD technique. As starting materials on Zn and Ba, β-diketonates of Zn(thd)_2 and Ba(hfa)_2(tg) were used, respectively. On the other hand, Ar and NF_3 gases were used as a carrier gas and a fluorinating gas, respectively. ZnF_2-BaF_2 thin films were deposited on substrates of single crystal CaF_2(111) plates under various deposition conditions (plasma power, deposition rate, substrate temperature, etc.) Amorphous thin films were obtained in compositions of ZnF_2 alone and 60ZnF_2・40BaF_2. The synthesis of an amorphous ZnF_2 film is the first time. 3. For the AlF_3-BaF_2 system the preparation of amorphous thin films were attempted using b-diketonates of Al(aa)_3 and Ba(tfa)_2(tg) as starting materials under various CVD conditions. As a result, amorphous thin films were obtained in compositions of AlF_3 alone, 80AlF_3・20BaF_2 and 60AlF_3・4BaF_2. The synthesis of an amorphous AlF_3 film also is the first time. 4. For the GaF_3-BaF_2 system the preparation of amorphous thin films were attempted using b-diketonates of Ga(aa)_3 and Ba(tfa)_2(tg) as starting materials under various CVD conditions. As a result, amorphous thin films were obtained in compositions of GaF_3 alone and 50GaF_3・50BaF_2. The synthesis of an amorpous GaF_3 film also is the first time. 5. The amorphous thin films synthesized in the ZnF_2-BaF_2, AlF_3-BaF_2 and GaF_3-BaF_2 systems were characterized by means of thin-film X-ray diffraction, IR absorption, atomic force microscope, thickness and refractive index. 6. It was proved that the developed ECR plasma-enhanced CVD technique is applicable in preparing amorphous thin films of fluoride systems.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), KOBE UNIVERSITY, 2001 - 2002ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR IN HIGH DENSIFICATION OF GLASS UNDER HIGH PRESSURE TREATMENT AND ITS CORRELATION TO FRAGILITY CONCEPTThe local structures around glass-constituent cations in the undensified and densifid fluorozirconate glasses are examined by means of Raman scattering spectroscopy, Eu^<3+> fluorescence spectroscopy, and EXAFS spectroscopy. The mechanism of peculiar ligh-pressure behavior is clarified based on the results of the structural analyses. The permanent densification experiment in SiO_2-K_2O-CaO-SrO silicate glasses is conducted. The structures of invert-composition glasses, whose structure has not been cleared yet, are clarified by ^<29>Si MAS NMR spectroscopy. Ionic ZrF_4-based fluoride glasses, mixed ionic and covalent SiO_2-based oxide glasses, and a covalent GeS_2 sulfide glass are employed as densification experiments. The densification behavior of glasses having different chemical-bond properties and structures is discussed. The structure of densified GeS_2 glasses is examined by means of Raman scattering spectroscopy, XAFS spectroscopy, and X-ray radial distribution analysis. The local structural-change around Ge in GeS_2 glass through compression and decompression processes, i.e., densification process, is examined by an in-situ KXAFS method. The thermal relaxation behavior of densified GeS_2 glass is examined. In the analyses of thermal relaxation the presence of two types of relaxation processes, that is, the fast and slow processes, is found in the thermal relaxation in densified GeS_2 glass. Then, the activation energies of each relaxation process is estimated. The structural relaxation during both processes is examined by the measurements of Raman scattering spectra and EXAFS spectra. The relationship between the red shift of visible absorption edge and the structural change through thermal relaxation is discussed.
- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 奨励研究(A), 奨励研究(A), 京都大学, 2000 - 2001光照射により誘起されるシリカガラスの欠陥の生成機構と光機能の解明GeO_2-SiO_2ガラスの光誘起屈折率変化は、いくつかの素反応が関わる複雑な光化学反応に由来すると考えられている。その中でも、約5eVに光吸収帯を持つ2配位Ge(Ge^<2+>)が関わる光化学反応がファイバー回折格子の形成過程に寄与していることが示唆されている。実験的には、光照射に伴いGe^<2+>がGeE'中心(先に述べたE'において、SiがGeに置き換わったもの)に変換することが確認されている。しかし、その変換機構の詳細は不明である。 そこで、本研究では、GeO_2-SiO_2ガラス中のGe^<2+>欠陥を摸擬したクラスターを用い、その欠陥構造がイオン化の過程で、どのような構造変化を引き起こすのかについて、分子軌道計算に基づき解析した。計算の結果、Ge^<2+>欠陥がイオン化によりGeE'中心に変換しうることが理論的に示された。さらに興味深い点は、GeE'中心の生成過程で、4員環という小さな環構造が形成さることである。光照射に伴うファイバー回折格子の形成過程で実際に3、4員環という小さな環構造が形成されることは実験的にも確認されており、この構造変化が光誘起高密度化(高屈折率化)の(ひとつの)起源であるとも考えられている。量子化学計算に基づき、Ge^<2+>のGeE'中心への変換過程と、高密度化につながる小さな環構造の形成過程を同時に示したのは本研究が初めてである。 さらに我々は、GeO_2-SiO_2ガラス中での電子トラップのメカニズム、SiO_2ガラス中におけるSi^<2+>欠陥から中性酸素欠陥への変換機構、及びE'中心の一種であるE_α'の構造モデルなどについても提唱した。ガラス中の欠陥構造は、その電子状態が比較的局在化しているため、本研究で用いた比較的小さなクラスター計算でも、現実の系で起こっている現象をかなりの程度まで再現できることがわかった。
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B)., Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B)., KYOTO UNIVERSITY, 1998 - 2000Medium range structure and dynamics of glass and molten glassIn this study, structural analysis of glass melts at high temperatures (〜1600℃) by means of X-ray diffraction has been dealt with. First, the principle and procedures of X-ray radial distribution function (RDF) analysis are described in detail. Second, the advantages of a pair function method and a molecular dynamics (MD) calculation method are also mentioned in detail, when they are used to interpret the obtained experimental RDF data. The X-ray diffraction apparatus used in this work is stated especially emphasizing that the photon counter with a high energy resolution such as Si(Li) solid state detector (SSD) should be used in order to obtain highly resolved RDF curves. The results obtained are as follows. First, the common computer programs written in C-language which made it possible to process the raw data and to calculate the RDF curves were developed using a Sun Ultra 5 workstation which is a UNIX machine. These programs are available on demand to anyone who wants to use them. Second, structure analysis has been performed on SLS(16Na_2O 10CaO 74SiO_2) glass which is a model glass of commercial green glass pane in order to check the programs developed in this work. A well-resolved RDF curve was obtained for the room-temperature glass. Each peak was assigned to corresponding atomic pairs : Si-O at 0.164 nm, Na-O, Ca-O around 0.23 nm, O-O at 0.27 nm, Si-O-Si at 0.31〜0.32 nm and so on. It has been confirmed that they work perfectly. Then, the structure of SLS glass melt placed on a ZrO_2-dispersed Pt-10%Rh ribbon-heater(FKS16, Furuya Metals Co.) was analyzed at 1500℃ using a high temperature furnace in a similar way to that of the same glass at room temperature. Both the X-ray RDF analysis and MD calculation revealed that there is no distinct structural difference between the glass and melt, in other words, the network structure consisting of SiO_4 tetrahedra remains basically unchanged on melting. In this respect, the present soda-lime silicate glass can be classified into the "strong glass". It is also found from the MD calculation that the peaks due to the Na-O and Ca-O pairs become very broad and expand to the longer distance on melting, while the Si-O bondlength and the Si-O-Si bond angle remain almost unchanged. This result clearly indicates that the thermal motion of Na^+ and Ca^<2+> ions becomes remarkable at higher temperatures, leading to the thermal expansion. We can say that the thermal expansion of soda-lime silicate glasses is mainly governed by the thermal motion of Na^+ ions.
- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 奨励研究(A), 奨励研究(A), 京都大学, 1997 - 1998分子軌道法およびラマン分光法による低エネルギー励起の微視的起源に関する研究HF/3-21G^<(*)>レベルでNa_2O・3B_2O_3ガラスの中距離構造を模擬したクラスターに対して非経験分子軌道法による計算を行った。最適化したクラスターの構造パラメーターは実験値とよく一致した。また、そのクラスターを用いて振動計算を行い、ナトリウムホウ酸塩ガラスに対して観察されている遠赤外線吸収スペクトルの解釈を行った。計算結果は、観察されている非対称なスペクトルをよく再現し、二つのブロードなバンドからなることを示した。基準座標解析からこれら二つのバンドはベクトル偏倚が互いに直交したアルカリカチオンの異なるタイプの振動に帰属できることを示した。
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), KYOTO UNIVERSITY, 1996 - 1998Search and development of nonlinear optical glasses with a high FOMA purpose of the present study was to search and develop novel nonlinear optical materials based on the simultaneous measurements of signs, and real and imaginary parts of the third order nonlinear optical susceptibility χィイD1(3)ィエD1 by using the Z-scan measurement system newly purchased. Crystalline and amorphous oxide materials containing organic dyes, heavy metal ions, or transition metal ions are considered to be promising candidates for novel third order optical nonlinear materials with a high FOM. Although we have tried to measure the third order nonlinear optical susceptibility χィイD1(3)ィエD1 by using a ps-YAG laser as an excitation source, instability of the ps-YAG laser was a serious problem to the acquisition of reliable data. Therefore, many efforts were made to achieve last instability. As a result, this problem has now been solved especially by the strict temperature control of a room and by an improvement of laser cooling systems. It takes, however, much time to analyze factors causing the instability . Open and closed aperture scans are usually carried out independently for conventional Z-scan measurement system. This takes much time to obtain a spectrum, so that the fluctuation of laser emission greatly affects the accuracy of the experimental result. Here, additional improvements have been made for our Z-scan measurement system. First, optics have been arranged so as to measure the open and closed aperture spectra at the same time. Second, electronics have also been modified to synchronize data collection with laser emission by a computer. These modifications successfully lead to a reduction of measuring time to a half and an increase of data accuracy over the system currently in use. In fact, the measured spectrum of CSィイD22ィエD2 used as a standard was enough accurate analyze the Z-scan data. The third order optical nonlinear susceptibility χィイD1(3)ィエD1 in novel low-melting ZnFィイD22ィエD2-SnFィイD22ィエD2-PィイD22ィエD2OィイD25ィエD2 glasses containing Rhodamine 6G and Phthalocyanine as optical activators and tellurite glasses were measured. Satisfactory results have been obtained by these measurements. Real (nonlinear refraction) and imaginary (nonlinear absorption) parts of the third order optical susceptibilities χィイD1(3)ィエD1 were independently measured, which is specific to the Z-scan technique. However, we could not discuss the present results sufficiently because an excitation wavelength of only SHG output from the ps-YAG laser (532 nm) is available at present. We continue investigate the mechanism of the third order optical nonlinearity and to propose novel nonlinear materials which can be utilized for practical application based on the experimental results involving wavelength dispersion of the third order optical nonlinear susceptibility χィイD1(3)ィエD1 by using optical parametric oscillation system.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), KYOTO UNIVERSITY, 1995 - 1996Nonlinear optical properties of heavy metal and transition metal oxidesIn this research, we have investigated the nonlinear optical properties of melt-derived oxide glasses containing transition metals and sol-gel derived transition metal oxide films with and without d-electrons by means of the third harmonic generation (THG) method and Z-scan method aiming at designing novel inorganic nonlinear optical materials. First, we assembled the Z-scan optics by using the CCD detector which were purchased. Since it can detect four channel signals at the same time and at the high S/N ratio, the CCD detector made it possible to measure the reliable data in a very short time. From the THG measurements on the sol-gel derived transition metal oxide films with or without heavy metal oxides, Fe^<3+> and Pb^<2+> ions were found to have high second-order hyperpolarizabilities. Using various iron oxide, effects of oxidation states and coordination states of iron, and crystal structure on the second-order hyperpolarizability (gamma) were investigated. The higher the oxidation state (Fe^<2+> * Fe^<3+> * Fe^<4+>) and the lager the coordination number (4 * 6), the larger the second-order hyperpolarizability (gamma). Using l.9m laser light as a incident beam, a conspicuous red THG signal were observed for TiO_2 (ll0) single crystal under the phase matching condition. The effects of d- electron on the nonlinear optical properties of transition metal oxide-containing TeO2 glasses were investigated. The results were explained based on the modified bond orbital theory originally proposed by Lines.
