- In this study, the authors conducted a microtremor measurement on 15 three-story steel-frame houses and investigated their natural frequencies and damping ratios. Additionally, the authors propose a new method for estimating the natural frequencies of steel-frame houses at the newly constructed state. The proposed method is an evaluation method that does not require modeling based on structural design process, and the validity of the estimated natural frequency which was obtained using this method was verified.Architectural Institute of Japan, Feb. 2024, AIJ Journal of Technology and Design, 30(74) (74), 47 - 52, Japanese

- Abstract The paper deals with the exterior design of townhouses in an urban block of the eastern part of Bhaktapur in Kathmandu Valley. The primary purpose is to provide an analysis method to determine the typical combination among exterior design components of Nepalese townhouses. By using multiple correspondence analysis and cluster analysis, 118 samples are grouped into 13 clusters. Secondly, all the clustered samples were put onto the original plots on the map to see the characteristics of their locations. Such a process would help a designer/planner reflect on how they should compose a proper facade in reconstruction works of townhouses after the earthquake in 2015.Wiley, Jan. 2023, JAPAN ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW, 6(1) (1)Scientific journal
- Abstract The paper deals with the exterior design of townhouses both inside and outside the Historic Monument Zone in the eastern part of Bhaktapur of Kathmandu Valley inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage List in 1979. This paper consists of following steps. First, the authors compose the original format of the survey sheet for Nepali townhouses. Second, the paper hypothesizes that a townhouse either experienced an extension of the upper floors or was totally reconstructed in the course of time. The authors propose “eaves types” as the key idea in this hypothesis. The result of the exterior design survey is primarily compared between inside and outside the Historic Monument Zone of the World Cultural Heritage site. Further comparison among eaves group or eaves types is done. Finally, eaves types are confirmed with the floor extension/reconstruction period demarcated by past devastating earthquakes. The result of the comparison again very well explained the characteristics of each eaves type.Wiley, Jan. 2023, JAPAN ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW, 6(1) (1)Scientific journal

- The Gorkha earthquake in 2015 was a recent large-scale earthquake that caused severe damage to many historic masonry buildings in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. The authors conducted a visual inspection survey of seismically damaged buildings after the earthquake in the historic town district of Bhaktapur in the Kathmandu Valley. The first part of this paper reports the distribution of the historic masonry buildings for each damage level in the surveyed area. A concentrating zone of severely-damaged buildings was explicitly found in the damage-level distribution map. Almost half of all the surveyed buildings were severely damaged during the earthquake, and most of these were historic masonry townhouse buildings. In the second part, the ambient vibration characteristics of the conventional historic masonry buildings in Bhaktapur are investigated. Typical dwelling houses in a historic town district in Nepal, which generally formed terraced houses built around a courtyard, were targeted for the measurement. Thus, the influence of adjacent buildings, which makes it difficult to identify the predominant natural frequencies from building vibration measurements, was also observed. Microtremor measurements using two accelerometers were conducted at 11 historic masonry buildings to investigate the discrimination degree for identifying the predominant natural frequency of conventional townhouse buildings. The estimated primary natural frequencies of these buildings were compared with the results of the screening model analysis. The advantages of using the proposed screening model analysis to improve the uncertainty of the first natural frequency identification by the microtremor measurement are discussed. Additional measurements of the microtremors at 4 of the 11 measured buildings were conducted using a different location combination of the two acceleration sensors. The sensors were placed between two different floors, and the transfer functions of each floor were investigated to observe the predominant vibration components on the floors in the entire building. Moreover, the coherence values observing the in-plane correlation of the floor responses were also analyzed for the dataset measured at two points separated on the same floor. Finally, an effective method for measuring the microtremors is discussed to improve the assessment of the vibration characteristics of conventional historic masonry buildings in Nepal.Lead, Frontiers Media SA, Aug. 2022, Frontiers in Built Environment, 8, 918960:1 - 18, English, International magazine, Co-authored internationally[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Locally bendable solid plates were manufactured in a single 3D-printing operation, using a single material, i.e., short carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The locally bendable CFRP plates included solid and bendable parts, which were connected seamlessly using double-stepped lap configuration. A parallel cross shape structure and 100% infill structure was adopted for the bendable and solid parts, respectively. The bendability could be controlled by varying the girder angle of the parallel cross shape structure. The bending stiffness was reduced to nearly 98% compared to that of the solid plate. The cyclic bending tests indicated that the locally bendable CFRP plate underwent reversible bending deformation. The bending stiffness decreased by approximately 8–14%. However, visible damage was not observed even after 100 cycles of bending deformation.Elsevier BV, Oct. 2021, Advanced Industrial and Engineering Polymer Research, 4(4) (4), 264 - 269, English, International magazine[Refereed]Scientific journal

In Nepali historic cities, it is commonly seen that a façade of a townhouse is vertically divided at the time of inheritance, which causes damages on traditional façade corruption as well as structural vulnerability. While it has been inside the framework of traditional transition, the cases of new construction of divided parts have been accelerated in the process of reconstruction after the 2015 earthquake and resulted the rapid transition of townscapes. This paper discusses the challenges of this issue based on the survey of the specific area in Bhaktapur and reveals that styles of façade design have been influenced by division system; façade division is closely related to interior one: the on-going building regulation does not manage this issue and requested to compile this issue.

- The paper deals with the exterior design of townhouses in an urban block of the eastern part of Bhaktapur in Kathmandu Valley registered as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1979. The paper consists of following five steps.Architectural Institute of Japan, Feb. 2019, Journal of Architecture and Planning (Transactions of AIJ), 84(756) (756), 425 - 435, Japanese
1) First and the most important purpose is to provide analysis method to determine typical combination among exterior design elements of Nepali townhouses. By adopting the Multiple Correspondence Analysis (or Mathematical Quantification Theory Category III is equivalent also) and Cluster Analysis, 118 samples are grouped into 13 clusters.
2) Secondly, in the preceding paper, authors proposed the idea called "eaves types". It was meant to discern the developing process of Nepali townhouses between extension of storeys and total reconstruction. Although we showed the pitched eaves types and flat eaves experience different development, we had not yet reached to describe the concrete facade classification of eaves types. The paper tries to present variation of exterior design of eaves types.
3) Several clusters derived from analysis show different characteristics of facade though sometimes they belong to the same eaves type. For 3F, 4F pitched eaves type and 3F, 4F flat eaves type, the analysis results in finding both traditional sophisticated design and contemporary one. What's more, cluster 8 regarded as one with the most traditional style contains both typical old townhouses and newly rebuilt guesthouse-like ones. This may suggest that recent exterior design of guesthouses are similar to that of traditional townhouses
4) Every cluster properly corresponds to the structure excluded from item-category type data. Clusters with flat eaves correspond chiefly to confined masonry followed by mixed structure with masonry and RCC slabs. As for affected condition by 2015 earthquake, all the three clusters within 3F no eaves type came under the category "partially destroyed".
5) Finally after clustering, all samples were put into the original plots on the map. Facades of townhouses along streets tend to maintain traditional exterior design elements as opposed to the facades inside courtyards, which would normally take on modest external appearance. There are also several variations of facades ranging somewhere between traditional and simple modern exterior design. Townhouses with such marginal designs are scattered along streets, in alleys and inside courtyards.
In this way, most of clusters can be related to certain locations in correspondence with their exterior designs. This would help a designer/ planner to reflect how they should compose a proper facade once they get involved in reconstruction works of townhouses after the earthquake.[Refereed]Scientific journal - Corresponding, Japan Association for Earthquake Engineering, Dec. 2018, Proc. of the 15th Japan Earthquake Engineering Symposium, 1651 - 1660, JapaneseStudy on test system development for AMD by real-time hybrid simulation using shaking-tableSymposium

- The paper deals with the exterior design of town houses both inside and outside monument zone of the eastern part of Bhaktapur in Kathmandu Valley registered as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1979. This paper consists of following four steps.Architectural Institute of Japan, Feb. 2018, Journal of Architecture and Planning (Transactions of AIJ), 83(744) (744), 263 - 273, Japanese
1) Firstly, authors composed the original format of survey sheet for Nepali town houses. The categories of this sheet are grouped into four items, which are frame, silhouette, part and element, each of which contains more detailed categories. The survey sheet was completely made from scratch with reference to the several important existing researches. The number of samples are 104 buildings inside Monument Zone (core + buffer zone) of World Cultural Heritage and 73 buildings outside Monument Zone. More than 90 % of the total sample buildings are classified as townhouses.
2) Secondly, the paper tries to submit a hypothesis on that either a town house experienced the extension of the upper floors or totally reconstructed during the course of time. Authors propose ‘eaves types’ as the key idea in this hypothesis. Eaves types are classified into 8 types depending on which floor level eaves are attached to. Eaves types are classified into three upper level groupings, i.e. pitched eaves group, flat eaves group and without eaves group. As for structure, pitched eaves group are basically masonry construction as opposed to the RCC construction (confined masonry) or mixed structure (masonry wall + RCC beams, masonry + RCC rooftop) for flat eaves group. In addition, three-storey buildings of without eaves group turned out to be masonry construction and four-storey buildings of the same group chiefly consist of RCC construction. The former eaves type shows similar characteristic to pitched eaves group. So does the latter to flat eaves group.
Regarding the relations among eaves types, the paper made an attempt to establish a diagram that explains the transition among important eaves types whether an eaves type is reconstructed or just upper floors are extended.
3) Result of the exterior design survey is primarily compared between inside and outside Monument zone of world cultural heritage. Further analysis is conducted by two levels as needed, i.e. comparison among eaves group and that among eaves types. The items to be examined here are frontage, roof shapes, roofing materials, finishing on the first floor wall, openings on the first floor as well as on the third floor, wood carving, window lattice and cornice between the second and the third floor. The result turned out show distinct characteristics among eaves types or eaves groups that led authors to provisional proof of the hypothesis with eaves types.
4) Eaves types are finally confirmed with the construction period and upper floor extension period. In Nepal, for the past one century, prior to Nepal-Gorkha earthquake in April 2015 earthquake, two devastating earthquakes happened. They are Bihal-Nepal Earthquake in January 1934 and India-Nepal border region earthquake in August 1988. These years are applied to separation of periods for recovery from the disaster was the chances to reconstruct the affected buildings. The result of the comparison of reconstruction/extension periods with eaves types again very well explained the characteristics of each eaves type.[Refereed]Scientific journal - Corresponding, Architectural Institute Japan (Wiley Online Library), Jan. 2018, Japan Architectural Review, 1(1) (1), 96 - 108, English, International magazine[Refereed][Invited]Scientific journal
- This paper aims to discuss fundamental units forming urban settlement blocks and their development process which demarcate urban fabric with respect to the combination arrangement of urban dwellings types. Bhaktapur is known as one of the historic cities of the World Heritage Site in Kathmandu Valley. The analysis focuses on the house distributions that have common votary areas of the house guardian deity called chetrapatra and the aerial extent of the same surname (thar). Considering these into account, the authors classified urban dwellings into 9 types. We try to submit a hypothesis on the development process of planning type clusters of urban dwellings as fundamental units forming urban settlement blocks.Architectural Institute of Japan, Nov. 2017, Journal of Architecture and Planning (Transactions of AIJ), 82(741) (741), 2843 - 2853, Japanese, Co-authored internationally
chetrapatra is an iconic ritual artifact made of stone slab carved in a form of eight-pealed lotus, and it is placed in front of a house entrance or in a courtyard. People worship this stone when they go out to the street from their house or a lane. There are also cases when this type of chetrapatra is common to inhabitants who go in and out at the lane. We classify chetrapatras into 7 types based on ownership and locations. The areal extent for worship to chetrapatra is sub-divisions in the areal extent for worship to Ganesh shrine. But they must be owned respectively on either side of the street.
The Newar population may be classified into various social status according to the traditional profession, caste, or other form of socio-religious associations. In Bhaktapur, their social status are divided into 3 categories. These are the Macrostatus system, thar and phuki. as proposed by Levy (1990). We conducted survey on the distribution of thar for our analysis to have information of kinship. We found five areal extent of a same thar in the case-study area. They all spread the both side of street but have the different plot depth perpendicular to the street.
Next we classify urban dwellings into 9 types whether they have a common chetrapatrs or individual one and their locations, which we call ‘Planning Types of Urban Dwellings’. It should be noted that ‘Courtyard Dwelling Units’ is relatively old compared to the other types of urban dwelling units. In addition, this type has one common chetrapatra shared by all the residences surrounding the same courtyard. chetrapatra is placed in front of the entrance of a ‘Courtyard Dwelling Units’. On the other hand, ‘Detached houses facing the street’ tend to have their own chetrapatra.
Finally, we analyze the distribution of ‘Planning Type Clusters of Urban Dwellings’ in the case-study area. The analysis indicated dominant arrangement patterns which are the one that include ‘Courtyard Dwelling Units’ on one side of the street and ‘Detached houses facing the street on the other side. Taking that into account, we found the particular arrangement patterns of ‘Planning Type clusters of Urban Dwellings’ developed across the street. Another important arrangement pattern is the one that ‘Incomplete Courtyard Dwelling Units’ often found on the plot backside of ‘Detached houses facing the street’. We regard them as two important typical cluster types of urban dwelling units. We suggest that the development process of such cluster types underwent 3 stages, giving great influence to the urban development in the earlier period.[Refereed]Scientific journal - Lead, Conference Committee of SI17, Jun. 2017, Proc. 12th International Conference on Shock & Impact Loads on Structures, 1, 329 - 388, EnglishOutline of New AIJ Guideline Publication as "Introduction to Shock-Resistant Design of Buildings"[Refereed]International conference proceedings

This paper reports a non-linear analysis of a steel structure using a large-scale and detailed finite element model considering fracture phenomenon. The shaking-table test results of a 3-story full-scale steel frame structure, which were carried out at E-defense in 2013, are evaluated analytically in this paper. The analytical model used in this study is intended to replicate adequately entire shape of target steel frame structure specimen, assembling huge numbers of tiny finite elements. The damage index is introduced as the fracture criterion on steel members model for execution of FE simulations. Elements whose damage index has been reached to 1.0 are eliminated in our way of FEM analyses. The damage index shows a good correlation with the occurrence of the fracture observed in the experimental test. The timing of the first fracture of the beam end in the analysis mostly match well to that of the experiment. In addition, the structural responses obtained by the analysis agree with those of the experiment.Corresponding, European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS), Jun. 2017, Proc. 6th ECCOMAS Thematic Conference on Computational Methods in Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering (COMPDYN 2017), 2, 4920 - 4927, English, International magazine[Refereed]International conference proceedings

- This paper proposes a new damper that can change the damping force depending on the response displacement and response velocity. The proposed damper reduces the damage of seismic-isolated structures which undergo excessive deformation during huge earthquakes, without lowering the performance of the seismic-isolation system during medium to small magnitude earthquakes. We investigate the effects of using the proposed attenuator on the responses of a superstructure model to seismic motion that causes collision with retaining walls. - This paper aims to discuss the areal extent and spatial structure of neighborhood, called tol, which possibly demarcate urban fabric with respect to worship and funeral procedure. Bhaktapur is known as one of the historic cities of the World Heritage Site in Kathmandu Valley. The analysis focuses on the house distributions that have the common votary area of the guardian deities' shrine and the use of the same crossing for funeral procedure.Architectural Institute of Japan, Jan. 2017, Journal of Architecture and Planning (Transactions of AIJ), 82(731) (731), 93 - 103, Japanese, Co-authored internationally
A tol is one of the traditional neighborhood units. But it is not clear how tols are structured and what tols have in common. First, we take a look into the existing studies on origin and outline of a tol, and pay special attention to the following two studies. A research done by Pant (2001) has taken the approach that the key to consider a tol is the areal extent of worship to the guardian deities, ganesh. Another research done by Gutschow (1975) has claimed that the clue to determine tol boundaries is the ways of the Dead to crematories. It consider a tol as equivalent to the areal extent of use of the same chwasa which is a stone found often at the crossings on the way to crematories from the diseased houses.
Ganesh is often considered as a guardian deity at various neighborhood levels. That of a tol is called Tol Ganesh. A Tol Ganesh is normally placed on the main square in a tol, except when there is a presence of a more prominent deity of wider importance in the main square. People in the same tol usually worship the same Tol Ganesh. We find out that those living urban dwellings in located on both sides of a street worship to the same Tol Ganesh, but the depth of its areal extent on one side of a street seems shallow than the other side.
Chwasa is an aniconic ritual artifact made of a single stone placed on the crossing. Various articles left by the diseased are disposed on the stone as a part of the funeral procedures, for example clothes, umbilical cord or inauspicious belongings of the dead. We found 7 chwasas in the case-study area to the east of Dattatraya square. However the inhabitants in the peripheral part of the old city do not use these chwasas but use the temples or the crematories outside the city area. People living in the midst of the city area after disposing articles of the dead on chvasa also use the temples afterwards.
Next we compare the areal extent of worship to Tol Ganesh with that of use of chwasa. Whether or not a ganesh shrine and chwasa are closely placed will determines overlapping extent of both votary areas. However it became clear that the areal extent of use of chwasa have the same character with that of worship to Tol Ganesh in terms of Ryogawa-cho structure explained below and the difference in horizontal depth perpendicular to the street.
Finally, our suevey located tol boundaries in the eastern part of Bhaktapur. It turned out that there were 2 types of tol boundaries. i.e. the more common type whose boundaries lying on the backside of houses (Ryogawa-cho type), and the other one with boundaries lying on the street (Katagawa-cho type). Compering these three boundaries, (Tol Ganesh, chwasa and tol), Katagawa-cho type tol boundaries seem to be an exception. But we will try to find particular meaning in them in the next paper on historic urban formation.[Refereed]Scientific journal - Lead, Organizing Committee of the 16WCEE, Jan. 2017, Proc. 16th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (16WCEE), (3068)1 - 11, EnglishData Extraction of Structural Behaviors at the Moment of Earthquake Occurrence from Video Capturing Clips[Refereed]International conference proceedings

- An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 (Mw) occurred at 11:56 NST (local time) on 25 April 2015, in the central part of Nepal (Gorkha). We organized a damage survey team and dispatched it to the affected area for several periods following the earthquake (May 26 to June 3: first trip, June 17 to 24: second trip, August 16 to 21: third trip and October 27 to November 2: forth trip) to investigate the damage and collect data. We found traditional construction methods are stronger than imagined. Many traditional earthquake-resistance technologies exist in Nepal. The first and second surveys were to collect timely statistical information on the damage to brick and stone masonry buildings and to confirm the availability of data and their sources for subsequent surveys. We also carried out a first-hand building damage survey in selected areas. The investigation of the strong-motion data set from the USGS Center for Engineering Strong Motion Data includes information from stations in Nepal that continued to function throughout the main shock and the several subsequent strong aftershocks of the 2015 earthquake. The third and fourth surveys were to collect the every building damage survey in selected areas. The motivation behind the survey was to obtain ground truth data for the calibration and improvement of a wide-area damage estimation system that uses satellite data the system is currently under development by National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NEID) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). A survey of the degree of damage was conducted for every house in Sankhu and Khokana by the European Macroseismic Scale (EMS) -98. This report outlines the findings of this investigation team into various aspects of the earthquake disaster in the Kathmandu Valley. The motivation behind the survey was to obtain ground truth data for the calibration and improvement of a wide-area damage estimation system that uses satellite data. Field surveys confirmed that the severely damaged urban area was well detected by the decrease derived from the ALOS-2 satellite SAR data. The higher classification accuracy for non-damaged area helps to detect the damaged urban area using this technique, immediately after a disaster.Springer International Publishing, Aug. 2016, Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, 34(4) (4), 1223 - 1245, English, International magazine[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Recently, there have been some researches on analysis using finely-meshed FEM model to understand in detail the behaviors of buildings during severe earthquakes. The accuracy of such an analysis is often validated by comparing the analytical results with the corresponding full-scale shaking table test results. While they are highly successful in the accuracy, few take account of the sequence effect of multiple series of excitations, in the other words, the effect of inherent structural damage caused by prior excitations. In this paper, as a first step toward a design considering fore/aftershocks, numerical analysis using finely-meshed FEM model is conducted for a steel structure subjected to multiple series of excitations in a full-scale shaking table test. The FE model structure is modeled with planar and solid finite elements. It is shown that, by taking account of the history of input excitations and caused damages, the actual behaviors can be simulated by analysis with much higher accuracy.Corresponding, Japan Association for Earthquake Engineering, Jan. 2016, Journal of Japan Association for Earthquake Engineering, 16(1) (1), 217 - 227, Japanese, Domestic magazine[Refereed]Scientific journal

- The differences in seismic responses in highly nonlinear ranges among various analytical models are not clear. These include such as frame models, and detailed Finite Element Method (FEM) models microscopically reproducing the individual components' shapes are not clear structures. In this study, the dynamic response of a detailed FEM model is compared to those of frame models. The FEM model was made to reproduce a building's shape as precisely as possible and analyzed by LS-DYNA that is commercial FE code equipped explicit method. The frame model was macroscopically composed of beam elements. Two frame models were considered; in one model, the P-delta effect was considered, and in the other model, it was neglected. The differences between those frame models and the detailed FEM model in highly non-linear ranges was investigated. As a result, it was assured that the frame model that neglected the P-delta effect tend to underestimate the deflection in these ranges, while the residual deflection of the frame model that considered the P-delta effect was larger than that of the detailed FEM model because of stiffness degradation.Corresponding, National Committee for IUTAM, Science Council of Japan, Mar. 2014, Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Japan, 62, 159 - 166, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- This study elucidates a method to ascertain control variables such as the performance function and weight coefficient, at the initial stage of structural design. For the purpose, authors assess the structural properties (equivalent damping factor and equivalent natural circular frequency) of semi-active optimal control system by MR damper to evaluate the structure response. First, the relations between weight coefficient and those system properties are discussed. Secondly, control parameter determination in consideration in the maximum controlling force is proposed. Validity of those design proposals are investigated by real-time hybrid experiments and numerical simulations.Architectural Institute of Japan, Jul. 2013, Journal of Structural and Construction Engineering, 78(689) (689), 1237 - 1245, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Evaluative Study of Structural Properties By Microtremor Measurements of Traditional Wooden Structures Including Unoccupied HousesIn this paper, microtremor measurements and on-the-spot investigations of anti-seismic efficiency are carried out at the traditional wooden housings including unoccupied houses located in Imai-Cho, Kashihara-City, Nara, Japan, one of a town built and prospered originally around a temple. This town, Imai-Cho has a lot of traditional wooden structures historically precious, most of those structures have been constructed since 18 or 19 century. Many structures in Imai-Cho are repaired and investigated to preserve to the next ages, on this purpose, in 1993, Imai-Cho has been specified as designated area of the important "Traditional Architectures Preservation District" in Japan. On the other hand of those conserving business, a lot of unoccupied houses are increasing in this area, and those houses are left to become their aging damages without repairs. In this study, to make assure structural properties for anti-seismic efficiencies, building weights and floor sizes, constructing year, natural periods and latent aseismic strength are investigated for various types of wooden houses in this town. Thorough those evaluations, it is found that natural periods in most of structures in this area could be indicated to the explicit interrelations with structural volumes or building ages.Lead, Architectural Institute of Japan, Mar. 2010, Journal of Structural Engineering, 56B, 351 - 358, Japanese, Domestic magazine[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Evaluation of Repairing Effect under Bending Load for Wooden Beam Elements with Notches by Using Carbon Fiber SheetPartial repairing way of wooden frame elements with notch on the side loaded tension stress is investigated and experimental tests to assure reinforcing effect on the repairing part by using carbon fiber (CF) sheet is carried out. When the notches appear on the bottom edge of beams at reconstructing site of an existing wooden house and those beams with notches can not be removed or replaced, proposing repairing way will be considered to be usefully adopted. Cut-out area of beam is plugged up with wooden peace and covered by wooden plate on the bottom. Those wooden peace and plate are stuck on beams via adhesive layer and CF sheet is rolled up to the repairing part. Stress concentrations and deformations of the repaired and un-repaired beams with notch are calculated by comparison of parametric survey through FEM analyses. Proposing repairing way of wooden beam with notch is also experimentally examined by bending loaded tests. As a result, while notched beam is abruptly broken from the local position around the corner of notch, it is observed that CF sheet reinforced beam is splitted away at the plane covering whole section area, and also that mechanical property of the CF sheet reinforced beam was almost fully at stiffness and about 70% at strength of the non-lacked beam.Lead, Architectural Institute of Japan, Mar. 2008, Journal of Structural Engineering, 54B, 177 - 182, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- The optimal allocation of damping in coupled buildings and its control efficiencies are discussed in this research. For a given total damping, the optimal connecting damping and connecting stiffness that result minimum magnification factors for stable vibrations are searched from numerical computation. It was found that allocation of total damping for connecting damping gives maximum control efficiencies when the total damping is smaller. While for larger total damping, the required connecting damping decreases, and more damping should be allocated within buildings. The efficiency of coupling decreases with the increase of total damping, and is defined by an equivalent damping factor. Using equivalent damping factor and equivalent vibration periods, earthquake response of the coupled buildings may be satisfactorily evaluated by response spectra of single degree freedom system.Architectural Institute of Japan, Oct. 2006, Journal of Structural Constructing Engineering, 71(608) (608), 29 - 36, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- In this study, evaluation for seismic behaviors of inter-story isolated building structures and proposition of effective synthesis for inter-story isolating systems are focused. Emphases are put on following items: 1) To make assure fundamental characteristics of seismic responses of inter-story isolated buildings, 2) To estimate influences of aseismic behaviors of inter-story isolated buildings under considering soil-structure interactions. Through parametrically numerical simulations, those items are investigated in detail. As more advantageous idea to improve efficiency of inter-story isolating systems, additional installations of hysteretic damping devices are pointed out and estimated. As a result, it is assured that more effective response reductions can be gained by introducing the additional hysteretic devices on the lower stories below isolating floor.Architectural Institute of Japan, May 2005, Journal of Structural and Construction Engineering (Trans. of AIJ), 70(591) (591), 35 - 42, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- In this paper, inelastic seismic behaviors of "stiffness and strength" asymmetric frame structures are investigated. The effectiveness and importance of "high ductility" design for asymmetric structures are emphasized to reduce dispersion of structural response caused by eccentricity. Comparative studies by using various kinds of asymmetric frame models which make different values of "maximum ductility factor response" are executed through numerical simulations. Analytical procedures are operated by extraction of each hysteretic model according to each value of maximum ductility factor response which is targeted on the frame model. Various cases of maximum ductility factor response are evaluated. As a result, it is assured that high performance of energy absorption is operated by introducing high ductility efficiency to asymmetric frame model.Corresponding, Architectural Institute in Japan, Feb. 2000, Journal of Structural and Construction Engineering (Trans. of AIJ), 65(528) (528), 59 - 66, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Active air-bag control system for building vibrations induced by seismic excitationsTo improve structural safety under seismic excitations, a new type of active response control system which is named an 'active air-bag control system' is proposed. The argument of this paper is put on the upgrade of the system efficiency from the pilot model of the active air-bag. At first, the following two improvements are carried out as the hardware progress: 1) installing friction-less type of air-cylinders, 2) replacement of air pressure regulators into high-speed response type. By those progress, high performance of the control system is actualized. To accomplish effective aseismic response control by making the most of those progress, modification of the control algorithm is investigated. Emphases are put on the response prediction methods and the index functions. Active control tests are executed for the experimental model of the active air-bag system on the shaking table. As a result, the suitable condition of the control algorithm to actualize effectiveness of the active air-bag are assured.Corresponding, Architectural Institute in Japan, Mar. 1999, Journal of Structural Engineering, 45B, 7 - 14, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Seismic response of asymmetric frame structures introduced inter-story hysteretic dampersTo reduce structural responses caused by earthquake excitations, various kinds of damper systems are introduced to building structures. However, most of structural design for installing damper systems have been investigated only for symmetric frame structures. To avoid large displacements at the flexible-edge caused by torsional responses, reductions of eccentricity are aimed on general design of asymmetric structures. The concepts of those structural design are based on syntheses to make dynamic behaviors of building structures as to be within elastic region, so inelastic behaviors of stiffness and strength asymmetric frame structures have not been considered sufficiently. In this paper, an emphasis is put on investigations for effectiveness of hysteretic dampers introduced to stiffness and strength asymmetric frame structures. To investigate inelastic behaviors of hysteretic dampers installed to asymmetric frame structures, numerical simulations are executed. As a result, it is assured that, by adequatly locating hysteretic dampers to the asymmetric frame structures, inelastic structural responses regarding to the maximum displacements can be reduced to the same level with that of symmetric frame structures.Corresponding, Architectural Institute in Japan, Mar. 1998, Journal of Structural Engineering, 44B, 283 - 294, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Active air-bag control system for building structures (Development of experimental apparatus and preliminary experimental tests)A new type of active control system named an 'active air-bag control system' is proposed for reducing responses of building structures under various kinds of external disturbances. And also, the active air-bag system aims to control maximum inter-story displacements of building structures for shock motions. Main concept of the active air-bag system for building structures is introduced from the idea of human safety system of automobiles. In order to investigate control effects of this system, an experimental apparatus was developed and preliminary experimental tests are executed. Air cylinders which can generate the active control force are adopted as control devices of active air-bag system, and those are located on the lowest story of the structural model. As testing results, remarkable reduction of vibrations can be observed on the response control of free vibrations and also for harmonic excitations.Corresponding, Architectural Institute in Japan, Mar. 1997, Journal of Structural Engineering, 43B, 177 - 184, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Optimal arrangements of control forces for multi-located active brace system (Investigations based on digital-optimizing control method)A 'multi-located active control system' using active braces is investigated as a structural response control system for seismic excitations. In this paper, emphasis is put on optimal arrangements of active control force of each control device. To control the multi-located active braces system, a 'digital-optimizing control method' is installed as a control algorithm. On the point that the aseismic active control algorithm should be simple and effective, the digital-optimizing control method is fairly advantageous and applicable for practical use of active control system. Through numerical simulations, optimal arrangements of control force of each control device of active brace are examined, and also the effectiveness of this control algorithm is examined. As a result, it appeared that the control forces of lowest story is very important for response control by multi-located active braces, and more effective reductions of response can be gained by introducing optimal arrangements of the control forces of higher stories.Corresponding, Architectural Institute in Japan, Mar. 1997, Journal of Structural Engineering, 43B, 151 - 164, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- It is intended to prevent buildings from collapsing under earthquakes which are expected previously. In other words, it is not cleared and considered how buildings behave under sever unexpected earthquakes. However, to reduce damage caused by unexpected earthquakes, it is very important to clarify behaviors of buildings under such earthquakes and expose the potential risks. In this report, buildings are modeled to reproduce their shape as precise as possible by FEM. So the model can be express from local damage to buildings’ collapse. Using this model, collapse analysis was executed and expose potential risks in building collapse .Corresponding, Science Council of Japan & National Committee for IUTAM, Mar. 2013, Proc. of the 62nd National Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, (GS01-05)1 - 2, Japanese, Domestic magazineSummary national conference

The occurrence of the long period ground motions and pulse ground motions is predicted. The important buildings have to keep function, even if those are excited by such ground motions. In this study, researches on the semi-active control of base-isolation system and the active control by large mass damper were conducted for the purpose mentioned above. In those researches, a new verification method of the real-time hybrid simulation using shaking-table and hydraulic actuator (we call this "Dual real-time hybrid simulation") was proposed and response compensation was developed. In conclusions, a semi-active control method for non-linear base-isolation system to reduce the floor acceleration unaffected by hardening of isolators and an active control method to reduce the response displacement were proposed.Competitive research funding

Firstly, an improved-type hinge mechanism model is proposed for civil engineering structures. This model is designed to avoid a conflict between panels during motions to change its configurations. Foldable and deployable performance and an out-of-plane action of panels are evaluated through numerical simulations. Secondly, a novel folding mechanism that has slanting folding-line by cutting a panel-edge is proposed for aerospace structures. Visualization of expansion of folded structures and mechanism analyses to expand in outer space are conducted. Thirdly, a 4D-printing method, which is developed as a novel printing process using carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), is introduced to a joint between the rigid panel and flexible hinge. Deformability and durability of the flexible hinge are examined during deploying motions.

The developed system integrates passive energy dissipating devices with mechanical linkages to prevent buildings from collapsing in a few stories. Since this system can be installed to a building from its outside, it is useful to enhance the seismic performance of not only new buildings but also existing buildings.

The areal extent of distribution of townhouses as units forming an urban block is judged by the votary area of Hindu gods and occupational surnames. Based on measurement survey of townhouses within this extent, historic development of the urban block is analyzed with regard to the historic difference of townhouses’ floor planning. This also leads to the findings that townhouses have different facades between opposite sides of a street/lane. The historic urban landscape of Nepali cities is formed in such a way that closely relates with the development process of urban blocks.

However, hazardous actions of the buildings or their elements accompanying to the general impulsive accidents have not been evaluated enough quantitatively. Thus emphasis is put on making collapse behaviors of various building elements quantify through data extraction with the video motion capturing. Destructive tests using glazing specimen are executed and the impacting moment of the plate glass versus the flying object are recorded with the high-speed video camera. Scattering motions of broken glass pieces are observed quantitatively with motion extracting analyses. FEM analyses are also carried out. By comparing the simulation and the experimental results, it is assured that the FEM analysis can well-reproduce actual behavior of the breaking glass due to flying object.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kobe University, 2011 - 2013A damper developed by authors uses both the mass effect by rotary inertia and the variable damping effect by magnetorheological fluid. The negative spring property by inertia mass and significant energy absorption by MR fluid are confirmed. Authors intend to carry out practical realization of rotary inertia mass damper using MR fluid. In this research, through the real-time-hybrid experiment with the use of "MR rotary inertia damper", the seismic response properties are discussed by changes in the parameters on building structure. From the knowledge obtained by the experiment, the authors propose the semi-active control method focused on input velocity of earthquake. Then, in comparison with passive control, it have been confirmed the effects of the displacement reduction in the all case of experiments performed in this research. Especially, in the case of near-fault earthquake ground motion, it have been confirmed both floor response acceleration and displacement were reduced.Competitive research funding

- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention, 2003 - 2004Collapse mechanism of pilotis buildings and development of displacement distribution structural systemThe object of this research is to investigate the collapse mechanism of pilotis buildings, and to develop a new structural system for preventing the collapse at the first story of buildings. In order to investigate the collapse of reinforced concrete pilotis building, a numerical integration method was developed using the correct instantaneous stiffness of elements by predicting the time increment compatible with stiffness variation. The collapse of reinforced concrete columns was discussed using fiber model at plastic hinge and considering the horizontal and vertical vibrations. It was found that column models will collapse at a smaller earthquake input level for a simultaneous input of vertical motion, the ultimate safety of buildings should be evaluated considering the 3-dimensional dynamic behaviors of vertical members. Recent near-fault earthquakes shown strong pulse-like ground motion component in velocity, explicit formulas and simplified methods are efficient to highlight the destructive power of ground motions. Here, earthquake motions are simplified as rectangular acceleration pulses and velocity pulses that are solely related with peak values of ground motions, and explicit formulas are obtained that give an extremely simple correlation between structural response and seismic demand with peak values of ground motion. In order to eliminate deformation concentration of building structures, Rocking Center Designated (RCD) Mechanism is proposed to control the vibration modes. Firstly, the dynamic characteristics of this new structure were investigated, and its seismic design method was proposed. The effectiveness and advantages were discussed for design of new buildings and for retrofitting of existing buildings. To confirm the vibration properties of this new structure, Small shaking table tests were carried out to confirm the function of RCD mechanism for displacement distribution. Test results shown that the vibration mode of the main structure varies according to the rocking center of RCD mechanism. If the rocking center is under the ground level, then the first vibration mode will be predominant, and will be solely decided by the rocking radius geometrically, and the story forces are effectively relocated by RCD mechanism. This new structure system is expected to meet different performance needs for distributing the first mode displacement, and to choose the most suitable structural member for strength, deformation and energy consumption.
