There is a need for better communication as globalisation continues apace and, therefore, learning a foreign language could be considered more important than ever before. Professor Hirokazu Yokokawa is a psycholinguistic expert based at Kobe University and believes that improving one's English language ability is essential to living better in a global society. He is currently working to utilise knowledge communication technology to develop a learning training system in collaboration with engineering and neurology researchers. When it comes to communicating in a foreign language, Yokokawa's approach is to offer the text during the retelling task so that the learner can focus on training in grammar coding processing as the initial conceptualisation sub-task has been reduced, thereby promoting the automation of language processing and improving social skills. Yokokawa and his collaborators have carried out a user survey to determine users' preferences with regards to feedback on their learning and they plan to conduct further investigations to decipher the type of virtual agent behaviour that is preferred by the majority of users and whether this has an impact on training. The researchers' learning system includes interaction with avatars with a view to increase users' subjective assessment of their own speaking abilities and decrease nervousness associated with interacting with an unfamiliar person, ultimately helping users to feel more at ease.

Japanese English learners have difficulty speaking Double Object (DO; give B A) than Prepositional Object (PO; give A to B) structures which neural underpinning is unknown. In speaking, syntactic and phonological processing follow semantic encoding, conversion of non-verbal mental representation into a structure suitable for expression. To test whether DO difficulty lies in linguistic or prelinguistic process, we conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging. Thirty participants described cartoons using DO or PO, or simply named them. Greater reaction times and error rates indicated DO difficulty. DO compared with PO showed parieto-frontal activation including left inferior frontal gyrus, reflecting linguistic process. Psychological priming in PO produced immediately after DO and vice versa compared to after control, indicated shared process between PO and DO. Cross-structural neural repetition suppression was observed in occipito-parietal regions, overlapping the linguistic system in pre-SMA. Thus DO and PO share prelinguistic process, whereas linguistic process imposes overload in DO.

  • Use of Lexical Stress Information in Silent Reading and Speech Production by Japanese Learners of English: Evidence From Eye Movement Measurements and Naming Tasks.
    WATANABE, HIROKI, YOKOKAWA HIROKAZU
Phonological representation during silent reading as well as speech production includes lexical stress information (Ashby & Clifton, 2005). This study investigated use of such information during silent reading and speech production for Japanese learners of English (JLE) by conducting three kinds of tasks. Eye movements were monitored while pardcipants read words with primary stress (single stress condition) and words with primary and secondary stress (double stress condition) in sentence contexts silently. In the production test, participants read aloud target words. In the test for explicit knowledge, participants answered the place of stressed syllable. The result showed that reading times in double stress condition were longer than single stress condition, but the difference was marginally significant. The judgment by L1 speakers of English and acoustic analysis showed that JLE realized lexical stress in speech production. A test for explicit knowledge showed that most participants answered primary stress in single stress condition, but not secondary stress in double stress one. These results suggest the tendency that JLE use lexical stress information in both modalities regardless of explicit knowledge, but asymmetric patterns of use of the information between modalities were observed.

    大城 卓也, YOKOKAWA HIROKAZU
The present study investigated the influence of Japanese English learners' vowel epenthesis on lexical representation of novel words. Participants learned CCVCC novel words that are similar to existing English words for two days. After the novel word learning, participants joined a priming experiment. The study revealed following three points. (1) In line with previous studies, learnt novel words engaged in lexical competition after 24 hours including sleep. (2) This study used relatively short one syllable novel words (CCVCC), but lexical competition effects were clearly observed. (3) Lexical representation varied by the presence or absence of vowel epenthesis. Low epenthesis group showed a statistically significant difference between closed syllable condition (CCVCC) and open syllable condition (CVCVCVCV) in a naming task. On the contrary, high epenthesis group did not show such a difference. These results suggest that establishment of a lexical representation is influenced by vowel epenthesis.

In the present study, a speaking task was conducted to investigate how a short-term overseas training program impacted EFL learners' speaking output with a special focus on vocabulary. Thirty Japanese undergraduate learners who participated in a three-week overseas training program were asked to describe three pictures in the speaking task. The same topics were used in the Pre and Post-test without previous notice in the writing task. The results showed increases in Tokens and Types, indicating that learners produced more and used a larger variety of words in the Post-test. Furthermore, the 2,000 word levels were reinforced. The results indicate that even in the short term, lexical search and retrieval processes had improved and led to an increase in spoken vocabulary after a three-week overseas training program

In this study, an event-related potential (ERP) experiment was conducted to investigate Japanese EFL learners' sensitivity to linguistic information, including morphosyntactic (regular/irregular verb), semantic, and phrase structural information, during sentence processing. Learners with intermediate and lower proficiency participated in the experiment and read sentences with correct or incongruent information. The results revealed that Japanese EFL learners are sensitive to the morphosyntactic information of the regular verb and the semantic information, but they are not sensitive to the morphosyntactic information of the irregular verb and the phrase structural information. These results indicate that morphosyntactic and phrase structural processing are not as automatic for Japanese EFL learners.

It is known that phonological representation during silent reading by native speakers of English includes prosodic representation like lexical stress. This study was conducted to investigate Japanese EFL learners' use of lexical stress information during silent reading and speech production. The use of lexical stress information during silent reading was tested through eye movement measurements. Reading times of four-syllable words with two stressed syllables were compared to reading times of four-syllable words with one stressed syllable. In the production test, participants read English words aloud, and their sound data were rated for correctness of stress position by native speaker of English. As a result, during silent reading the overall reading times of words were significantly long. In the production test, the rating for words with two stressed syllables significantly lower than words with one stressed syllables. Out of the 17 participants, no participant used lexical stress information both during silent reading and production, only 6 participants used such information in either modality. These results suggest the difficulty of use of lexical stress information in both modalities and asymmetry of the use of the information between modalities for Japanese learners of English.

Previous syntactic priming study on Japanese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners has shown different priming rate subject to the learners' proficiency level. The present study investigated the neuralsubstrates of syntactic priming in Japanese EFL learners, and how it would change as they became more proficient speakers. The activation difference between when sentences with syntactic structures were repeatedly produced and when no syntactic structure was produced in the previous trial was compared between subjects. As a result, the difference was larger among lower proficiency participants than the higher proficiency participants in the anterior cingulate cortex.

The present study aims to examine how the lexical retrieval process affects oral sentence production of second language (L2) learners through a syntactic priming experiment. Forty six Japanese EFL learners participated in a picture description task. The participants were divided into four proficiency groups. They were asked to read the prime sentence aloud, and then to describe a picture with a single sentence. In total, 60 different pictures were used. The participants encountered each picture twice during the experiment. The pictures were shown with the objects' names written on the pictures (with-word condition) one time, and were shown without the names written (without-word condition) one time. Overall, the syntactic priming effect was observed in the without-word condition. When compared by proficiency, the upper intermediate groups exhibited syntactic priming effects both in the with and without-word conditions. The priming effect was found only in the without-word condition, in the lower intermediate group. No syntactic priming effect was found in the upper or lower groups in either condition. Considering the residual activation account, the results indicate that the way the combinatorial nodes are activated differ depending on the learners' proficiency. The results also indicate that syntactic activation is suppressed when lexical processing requires a greater cognitive load.

In this study, an eye-tracking experiment was conducted to investigate how Japanese EFL learners with intermediate proficiency process temporary ambiguous sentences from the perspective of their use of semantic and morphosyntactic information. The effects of the improvement of proficiency within the intermediate group and the increase of working memory capacity were also considered. The results revealed that Japanese EFL learners can use the information of animacy to facilitate sentence processing as their proficiency improves. However, they do not always use the morphosyntactic information effectively for sentence processing and there were few effects of proficiency and working memory capacity for reading sentences containing reduced relative clauses. These results indicate that Japanese EFL learners rely on the semantic and other information for sentence processing and that the use of the syntactic information is absent.

There is a wide range of individual differences in reading ability in English among Japanese EFL learners. The present study was conducted to examine the effects of proficiency, working memory capacity, and focusing task on text comprehension and reading behavior of Japanese graduate and undergraduate students. The results of this experiment indicate that proficiency is the major determinant of the individual differences in text comprehension in English. However, there was no correlation between reading comprehension scores and reading span test scores, which means that working memory capacity alone can't explain the differences of reading comprehension ability. As keyword detection task improved the reading comprehension and reading behavior, appropriate tasks are likely to facilitate text comprehension.

  • Determinant processing factors of recall performance in reading span tests: An empirical study of Japanese EFL learners
    横川 博一
This paper reports on experiments examining the effect of processing cognitive load on storage functions during the performance of different types of reading span tests (RST). It further explores the relationship between RST scores and the English proficiency among Japanese EFL learners. We used four types of RSTs-a standard version (RST 1), an RST with a Japanese-translation verification task (RST 2), an RST with a grammatical judgment task (RST 3), and an RST with a semantic judgment task (RST 4). Two types of English proficiency tests were also administered-a grammar test and a reading comprehension test. The results showed that the span scores of the RST 3 were significantly lower than those of the other RSTs, irrespective of scoring methods. In addition, the span scores of the RSTs 2 and 3 correlated significantly with both the grammar and reading test scores, irrespective of scoring methods and weighting conditions. These results suggest that syntactic processing places a heavy cognitive load on working memory (WM) resources, thereby leaving few resources for storage functions while Japanese EFL learners are performing the RSTs. They also suggest that their English proficiency largely depends on the degree of automatization of syntactic processing.

This study investigated the use of verb subcategorization information during sentence comprehension by Japanese EFL learners, using a self-paced reading task with the embedded anomaly technique. In order to observe when the syntactic structure was determined, filler-gap sentences were constructed as stimuli. Four types of verbs were used: simple transitive verbs, dative verbs, infinitive complement verbs and intransitive preference verbs. The plausibility of the direct object of the embedded verb was also manipulated. The results demonstrate that the high proficiency learners utilize verb subcategorization information of simple transitive verb; however they do not use it automatically as natives. The results also indicate that they cannot utilize that of other types of verbs. The low proficiency learners show the difficulty in processing the sentences with long-distance dependencies.

The present study aims to examine the development of automaticity in second language (L2) sentence processing from the viewpoint of the efficiency in the utilization of verb transitivity information in real time L2 sentence comprehension. To achieve this goal, a self-paced reading task was conducted with Japanese university students at different proficiency levels in L2 English, using a type of garden-path sentences as stimuli. The predicted garden-path effect was not evident for lower-level learners while higher-level learners showed a significant, though weaker than the native speaker control group, processing effect. The findings suggest that it is difficult even for advanced-level L2 learners to fully utilize verb transitivity information in real time sentence comprehension.

The findings indicate that the neural substrates of the vocal imitation learning are left lateralized frontal mirror neuron system. In order to ensure the effectiveness of the fMRI results, the psychophysical test of medical words, technical and unknown words for the subjects, was conducted. The results show the learning effect of the repetitive observation without overt pronunciation. This study took the first step to illuminate the process of automatization.

Word familiarity is one of the lexical attributes that has a great influence both on language comprehension and production. We define word familiarity as the degree to which one feels a certain word is heard or seen in his/her daily life. Our large-scale research project has already surveyed English word familirity presented in a visual manner by Japanese EFL learners, using an off-line method (Yokokawa,ed., 2006). In this paper, we report the results offamiliarity ratings for English words presented in an auditory manner by Japanese EFL learners, and compare the effects of auditory and visual presentation on English word familiarity ratings.

  • Vocabulary and Response Latencies in the Spontaneous Speech of Japanese EFL Learners_An Analysis of Data from a Short-term Overseas Study Tour_
YOKOKAWA, Hirokazu, YABUUCHI, Satoshi, SUZUKI, Masanori, MORISHITA, Miwa
This study reports the results of a lexical analysis and measurement of real-time response latencies in the spontaneous speech of Japanese EFL learners who participated in a short-term (three week) overseas study tour. Thirty-four subjects took the SET-10 Spoken English Test developed by Ordinate Corporation before and after the study tour. This test evaluated the ability of test-takers to understand spoken English and express themselves clearly and appropriately in English. We analyzed the speech data (SET-10 Part E: Open Questions) in terms of (1) lexical points of view such as token, types, and word families, and (2) the response latencies during speech. The results are discussed in terms of cognitive processing in speech production by Japanese EFL learners.

Extensive research has been conducted about the L2 mental lexicon from cross-linguistic perspective. According to Aitchison (1994), children are to go through the three related but d[ferent stages in acquiring the meaning of words in L1. labeling, packaging, and network-building. So far, in the L2 studies of vocabulary acquisition, attention has been paid to labeling and packaging processes of word meaning, and network-construction seems the most neglected area of study. In the present study, we have examined some aspects of the semantic network-building in both English and Japanese by using the meaning-based word association task Jar the meaning-familiar stimulus words. Results showed that there is a great deal of similarity between English and Japanese association patterns, but that the degree of matching rate between Japanese and English associations were not so high (approximately 50-60%). Based on these results, we will discuss the organization of Japanese and English mental lexicon Jar Japanese EFL leaners and the relationships between LI and L2 mental lexicon.

This paper describes three psycholinguistic experiments on anaphoric resolution during sentence comprehension in Japanese. In Japanese language, there is a postposition "wa" which signifies "topic" and "ga" which signifies "(grammatical) subject". Experiment 1 investigated the influence of the difference between "wa" and "ga" to assign ambiguous pronouns. In a self-paced reading paradigm, reading times were longer subject noun phrase than object noun phrase, irrespective of the difference of postposition, and there were more assignment to the topic noun phrase (Topic-NP: "NP+wa") than subject noun phase (Subject-NP: "NP+ga"). In a probe recognition task, reaction times (RTs) were faster subject (S-probe) than object (O-probe), and RTs for S-probe were faster Topic-NP sentence than Subject-NP sentence. Overall, the influence of topic was observed, thus suggesting that the topic assignment strategy (TAS) were utilized during the assignment of pronouns in Japanese. Experiment 2 investigated the influence of another heuristic strategies which have been proposed to account for the assignment of pronouns in sentences in English: the subject assignment strategy (SAS) and the parallel function strategy (PFS). Furthermore, Experiment 3 investigated to distinguish between the heuristic strategies: TAS, SAS, and PFS. In both Experiment 2 and 3, there was a strong preference assigning a pronoun to the preceding Topic-NP, thus showing TAS was predominantly used over other heuristic strategies. These findings support that Japanese has a linguistic nature of a topic prominent language.

This paper describes three experiments which examine how verb information affects sentence processing in Japanese. In Experiment 1, sentences containig either obligatory arguments or optional arguments or both were presented visually on minimum phrase basis (NP+P). The results showed that it took longer time to process optional adverbial phrases and that sentences lacking in obligatory arguments were more difficult to process. The results of Experiment 2 showed that it was the number of possibility of argument structure, not the mumber of argument that affects sentence processing. Experiment 3 examined when the final decision of syntactic structrure was made. The results showed that it was only at the end of the sentence that the final syntactic structure was decided.

This paper describes two experiments which examine how Japanese university students process syntactically ambiguous sentences in English. In Experiment 1, four sentences including prepositional phrases (PP) were presented visually word by word along with VP-biasing, NP-biasing, and Neutral contexts. The results showed that the preference toward VP attachment is not always observed, and the context affects the processing slightly. The results also showed that no significant difference is observed between English majors and non-English majors. In Experiment 2, sentences containing (1) NP_1 and NP_2's NP_3, (2) VP + NP + Relative -Clause + Adv., (3) Adj. + NP_1 and NP_2 constructions were presented in the same way as in Experiment 1 along with three kinds of context. The results showed that the extent to which context affects the processing of sentence parsing differs in each kind of sentence.

  • How the modality in input and exposure effects affect syntactic priming in language production in Japanese EFL learners
    YONAMINE Yuki, YOKOKAWA Hirokazu
In this study, syntactic priming method was used to reveal the process of learning syntactic structures in Japanese EFL learners We explored how differences in modality in input (spoken or written) affected language production and how increase of exposure to a specific syntactic structure affected language production The results suggested that there was no priming effect in a written condition, but spoken condition had pnming effects, and that cumulative effects were observed in all conditions between modalities and proficiencies after increase of exposure to a specific syntactic structure.

The purpose of this study is to improve the reading comprehension of students. Specifically, digital natives who do not read books will be able to read through one a paperback pocket edition. For that purpose, it is first necessary to know the initial value of one's reading comprehension, and a "reading comprehension diagnostic test" was also created so that it could be implemented on an LMS. Furthermore, we created teaching materials such as textbooks and worksheets on the assumption that we would use 2-3 times during the seminar class, and tried them in the actual class.

The study is an attempt to explore the cognitive process in L2 written sentence processing, focusing on the eye-movement data gathered using the EMR-8 (Eye-Mark Recorder). The graduate and undergraduate university students learning English as FL were required to visually process a variety of garden path (GP) and control sentences, while their eye movements were recorded. The major conclusions are as follows: (1) Japanese EFL learners experience a significant increase of processing difficulty when they are visually given GP-sentences than non-GP control and filler sentences. (2) The type of GP-sentences affects the relative processing difficulty in terms of the number of fixations and regressions for Japanese EFL learners. (3) The average duration data per a single fixation in general, do not provide a sensitive measure to differentiate the GP-and the non-GP sentences as well as the types of four different GP sentences. (4) The syntactic factors such as using an unreduced relative clause or an unambiguous past participle form reduce the processing difficulty of GP-sentences, and thus are important clues to process printed sentences. (5) Both the semantic variable (i.e.the animacy of the subject NP) and the pragmatic variable (i.e.background knowledge bias on the subject NP) reduce the processing difficulty of GP-sentences, and thus are crucial clues to process printed sentences. (6) The more detailed, phrase-based eye-movement data on fixations, regressions and total fixation durations also support and confirm the above conclusions. The fact that both the semantic and pragmatic variables affect sentence processing basically in an incremental fashion seems to support the notion of constraint-based processing model, which assumes the interaction of various linguistic information (e.g.syntactic, lexical, semantic, pragmatic) and is essentially associated with the connectionist architecture of human cognition.
