- A floristic study of the diatoms in the genus Pinnularia Ehrenberg (Bacillariophyceae) wasconducted along the Marikina River in the eastern part of Metro Manila, the Philippines. Atotal of 17 species were identified and described under the bright field light microscope. Habitatdescriptions for each Pinnularia species are provided. - Abstract To understand energy and material cycles on surface Earth, it is important yet challenging to estimate trophic transfer through ecosystems. To address this issue, the integrated trophic position (iTP), defined as a biomass-weighted average TP of a given food web, is useful because the iTP can be a proxy for the configuration of ecological pyramid. Here we conducted the compound-specific nitrogen isotope analysis of amino acids for macroinvertebrate communities collected from the Ado and Yasu Rivers in the Lake Biwa watershed, Japan, to estimate their iTP values. Unlike previous studies, no clear relationships between iTP and biodiversity (Shannon index H’) were found. However, by comparing the irrigated period and the non-irrigated period within the Yasu River, the decrease in iTP values was fairly characterized by the increase in H’. A significant difference in the observed iTP values compared to those reported in the previous study suggests that the configuration of ecological pyramid in stream ecosystems is dynamic rather than static. We also found that the iTP values of stream macroinvertebrate communities (2.37 ± 0.24) (n = 43), marine mesozooplankton communities (2.33 ± 0.34) (n = 14), and animal communities with various taxonomic groups (2.42 ± 0.21) (n = 158) are all comparable with each other, suggesting that partial communities involving macroinvertebrates well represent the configuration of total ecological pyramid. - Methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) is a group of planktonic microorganisms that use methane as their primary source of cellular energy. For tropical lakes in monsoon Asia, there is currently a knowledge gap on MOB community diversity and the factors influencing their abundance. Herewith, we present a preliminary assessment of the MOB communities in three maar lakes in tropical monsoon Asia using Catalyzed Reporter Deposition, Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridization (CARD-FISH), 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, and pmoA gene sequencing. Correlation analysis between MOB abundances and lakes’ physicochemical parameters following seasonal monsoon events were performed to explain observed spatial and temporal patterns in MOB diversity. The CARD-FISH analyses detected the three MOB types (I, II, and NC10) which aligned with the results from 16S rRNA amplicons and pmoA gene sequencing. Among community members based on 16S rRNA genes, Proteobacterial Type I MOB (e.g., Methylococcaceae and Methylomonadaceae), Proteobacterial Type II (Methylocystaceae), Verrucomicrobial (Methylacidiphilaceae), Methylomirabilota/NC10 (Methylomirabilaceae), and archaeal ANME-1a were found to be the dominant methane-oxidizers in three maar lakes. Analysis of microbial diversity and distribution revealed that the community compositions in Lake Yambo vary with the seasons and are more distinct during the stratified period. Temperature, DO, and pH were significantly and inversely linked with type I MOB and Methylomirabilota during stratification. Only MOB type I was influenced by monsoon changes. - Abstract Reducing excess phosphorus (P) loads that cause eutrophication in aquatic systems is essential for meeting water quality standards. The oxygen isotopic composition of phosphate (δ18Op) is a powerful tool for tracking P sources and cycling in diverse natural ecosystems. Here, we use δ18Op distribution in a small freshwater body (a lagoon–lake system) with high biological activity. We report δ18Op values seasonally along the water flow path in lagoon–lake system adjacent to Lake Biwa, Japan. The δ18Op values of inflowing water originating as agricultural runoff were constant throughout the study period at +16.3‰ ± 0.2‰. The δ18Op values in the system were generally offset from temperature‐dependent isotopic equilibrium with the surrounding water, ranging from +11.1‰ to +17.8‰. The δ18Op values of the lake water approached equilibrium values in July and October, when dissolved inorganic P (DIP) retention rates were high, consistent with extensive biologically mediated phosphate cycling. A δ18Op two end‐member mixing model, involving inflowing P and biologically recycled P, suggests that P turnover rates in the lagoon–lake system were high during the productive seasons. In contrast, the longer lake water residence time in the non‐irrigation season (winter) allowed δ18Op values to deviate toward lower values relative to both equilibrium and agricultural source δ18Op values, suggesting that P metabolism was dominated by extracellular/ecto‐enzymatic hydrolysis of dissolved organic P under low DIP concentrations. - Abstract Nutrient subsidy of methane‐oxidising bacteria (MOB), an alternative basal resource, to plankton communities through pelagic‐benthic coupling is expected to alter carbon‐to‐nitrogen (C/N) ratios and biomass of zooplankton, and affect biological processes in aquatic food webs. Previous studies indicate that most MOB nutrient subsidies to zooplankton are focused largely on C subsidies; nevertheless, considering that N is important to zooplankton and phytoplankton growth, a better understanding of MOB N subsidies to plankton communities is needed. We examined changes in nutrients, phytoplankton mass‐specific productivity, MOB reliance, C/N ratios and biomass of zooplankton between summer stratification and winter mixing periods based on in situ investigation in a subtropical deep oligotrophic freshwater ecosystem during 2010–2014. The results revealed that with increasing reliance on MOB during the winter mixing period, zooplankton C/N ratios decreased and had a significantly nonlinearly inverse relationship with zooplankton biomass. The negative relationship between zooplankton biomass and phytoplankton mass‐specific productivity was further observed in synchronous time. The profundal MOB enhanced pelagic‐profundal coupling and served as an alternative N support for pelagic plankton food webs during the winter and/or less productive seasons, adding to greater understanding of the role of methanotrophs in aquatic food webs.Wiley, Mar. 2024, Freshwater Biology, 69(5) (5), 679 - 691, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Abstract Because speciation might have been promoted by ancient introgression from an extinct lineage, it is important to detect the existence of ‘ghost introgression’ in focal taxa and examine its contribution to their diversification. In this study, we examined possible ghost introgression and its contributions to the diversification of ricefishes of the genus Adrianichthys in Lake Poso, an ancient lake on Sulawesi Island, in which some extinctions are known to have occurred. Population‐genomic analysis revealed that two extant Adrianichthys species, A. oophorus and A. poptae are reproductively isolated from each other. Comparisons of demographic models demonstrated that introgression from a ghost population, which diverged from the common ancestor of A. oophorus and A. poptae, is essential for reconstructing the demographic history of Adrianichthys. The best model estimated that the divergence of the ghost population greatly predated the divergence between A. oophorus and A. poptae, and that the ghost population secondarily contacted the two extant species within Lake Poso more recently. Genome scans and simulations detected a greatly divergent locus, which cannot be explained without ghost introgression. This locus was also completely segregated between A. oophorus and A. poptae. These findings suggest that variants that came from a ghost population have contributed to the divergence between A. oophorus and A. poptae, but the large time‐lag between their divergence and ghost introgression indicates that the contribution of introgression may be restricted.Wiley, Sep. 2023, Journal of Evolutionary Biology[Refereed]Scientific journal
- A floristic study of the diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) along the Marikina River in the eastern part of Metro Manila, Philippines, recorded at least 140 species belonging to 39 genera. Of these genera, one of the greatest number of species was observed in the genus Gomphonema (18species). These species were identified and described under the bright field light microscope.Some species were further observed under the scanning electron microscope. A habitat description of the occurrence of the Gomphonema species is given. Twelve (12) out of the 18species are new records for the country: G. brasiliense subsp. pacificum Moser, Lange-Bertalot & Metzeltin, G. chinense Liu & Kociolek, G. contraturris Lange-Bertalot & E. Reichardt, G. cuneolus E. Reichardt, G. exilissimum (Grunow) Lange-Bertalot & E.Reichardt, G. insigniforme E.Reichardt & Lange-Bertalot, G. javanicum Hustedt, G. kobayasii Kociolek & J.C.Kingston, G. pseudosphaerophorum H. Kobayasi, G. sundaense E. Reichardt, G. cf. qingyiensis L-X Zhang, P. Yu & Q-M You, and G. vibrio var. bohemicum (Reichelt & Fricke) R. Ross. - By using a questionnaire survey, we measured nature-related happiness levels, which include specific domains that differ from the overall subjective well-being (SWB) in a Japanese watershed. We regarded nature-related happiness levels, specifically related to rivers, a lake, or forests, as meaningful indices because many people living separated from nature may be unaware of their relationship with nature. We found that nature-related happiness levels had convergent validity and distinct correlation patterns with the explanatory variables, and these patterns were different from those of the overall SWB. These findings support the case of measuring nature-related happiness levels and overall SWB. Nature-related happiness levels were positively correlated with leisure activities and contact with living things. The abundance of rivers in a district is negatively associated with river-related happiness. We speculated that this was due to unidentified disservices associated with the rivers. Lake-related happiness has stronger correlations with relaxation benefits than symbolism, local food culture, art/culture, or water sources. Considering these findings, policymakers should formulate policies based on nature-related happiness levels. - Food web studies rely heavily on the use of traditional gut content analysis or the fairly popular stable isotope analysis rather than fatty acid analysis (FAA) despite its straightforward process, and ability to identify and characterize more diverse trophic pathways. In this study, we employed fatty acid (FA) biomarkers as a preliminary attempt to trace and characterize trophic pathways in food webs of four tropical lakes of volcanic origin in Luzon Island, Philippines - three clustered maar lakes (Yambo, Pandin and Calibato) and a large caldera lake (Taal). These lakes have a long history of human disturbance but limited ecological data. Knowledge of basal food sources and existing trophic dynamics of organisms are generally non-existent. Particulate organic matter (POM), zooplankton, and fish species were collected in August 2019 from the study lakes as representative of three trophic guilds. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and principal component analysis (PCA) were conducted to analyse FA profiles and characterize trophic relationships between representative organisms. For the POM, within lakes comparison of taxon-specific FA profiles showed a significant difference between the surface and near bottom depths, with the former dominated by photoautorophs and the latter by chemotrophs, suggesting the ability of FAA to effectively delineate between micro-organisms. Between lakes comparison also showed significant difference between the caldera and maar lakes, with the latter containing higher composition of bacterial FA, reminiscent of the considerably smaller lakes’ response to the impact of unmitigated organic loadings from anthropogenic activities. Taken together with the primary consumers’ FA profiles, analysis confirmed the ability of FAA to discriminate between FA profile sources. PCA explained >70% of the variance in the FA compositions for three trophic guilds in the two deepest lakes, which delineated both zooplankton and fish species food selectivity in each lake, alluding to FAA’s capacity to characterize dietary reliance of various species in an environment with numerous food sources. Although certain limitations were encountered, such as the specificity of the sampling depths for POM, and the small sample size of the representative species of the third trophic level, this study demonstrated the effectiveness of FAA as a powerful ecological tool for disentangling intricate lake food webs comprising various food sources. Overall, this study provided baseline information on basal food sources and trophic pathways of representative organisms from four tropical lakes. - Sympatric speciation is considered to be difficult without the coupling between ecological traits that allow resource partitioning and reproductive traits that allow assortative mating. Such "magic traits" are known to be involved in most of the compelling examples of sympatric speciation. In this study, we report a possible case of sympatric speciation without magic traits. Three species of ricefish (genus Oryzias) are suggested to have diverged sympatrically within Lake Poso, an ancient lake in Sulawesi. An analysis of genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphisms showed that these three species are reproductively isolated from each other throughout the lake. Stable isotope analyses revealed that the three species use different food resources, which reflect differences in their feeding morphologies (gill rakers and digestive tracts) and feeding sites. Field and laboratory observations showed that O. nebulosus and O. orthognathus share a mating habitat of cobbles, where they scatter fertilized eggs, whereas this site is never used by O. nigrimas, indicating that assortative mating is partly achieved by spatial isolation. The small, less-adhesive eggs of O. nebulosus and O. orthognathus probably reflect their adaptation to spawning on cobble beaches. Laboratory mating experiments showed strong prezygotic isolation between O. nebulosus and O. orthognathus, which is achieved by strong species recognition presumably by both sexes based on species-specific mating dances and nuptial coloration. In summary, the assortative mating of O. nebulosus and O. orthognathus is probably not coupled to resource partitioning. Abstract In the south basin of Lake Biwa, Shiga, Japan, overgrown aquatic weeds (submerged macrophytes) impede cruising boats and cause unpleasant odors and undesirable waste when washed ashore. To address this socio-ecological problem, Shiga Prefectural Government implemented a public program to remove overgrown weeds and compost them ashore to conserve the lake environment, while coastal inhabitants and occasional volunteers remove weeds from the beaches to maintain the quality of the living environment. However, these effects are limited because of disjointed social networks. We applied an adaptive and abductive approach to develop community capability to jointly address this problem by sharing academic knowledge with local actors and empowering them. The initial multifaceted reviews, including interviews and postal questionnaire surveys, revealed that the agro-economic value of composted weeds declined in historical and socio-psychological contexts and that most of the unengaged public relied on local governments to address environmental problems. These findings were synthesized and assessed with workshop participants, including local inhabitants, governmental agents, businesspeople, social entrepreneurs, and research experts, to unearth the best solution. The workshops resulted in the development of an e-point system, calledBiwa Point , to promote and acknowledge voluntary environmental conservation activities, including beach cleaning. It may contribute to enhancing the socio-ecological capability of communities. Abstract In the south basin of Lake Biwa, Shiga, Japan, overgrown aquatic weeds (submerged macrophytes) impede cruising boats, and cause unpleasant odors and undesirable waste when washed ashore. To address this socio-ecological problem, Shiga Prefectural Government implemented a public program to remove overgrown weeds and compost them ashore to conserve the lake environment, while coastal inhabitants and occasional volunteers remove weeds from the beaches to maintain the quality of the living environment. However, these effects are limited because of the disjointed social networks. We evaluate an adaptive and abductive approach to develop community capability to jointly address this problem by sharing the academic knowledge with local actors and empowering them to adopt initiatives. The initial multifaceted academic reviews, including interviews and postal questionnaire surveys revealed that the agro-economic value of composted weeds declined in historical and socio-psychological contexts and that most of the unengaged public relied on local governments to address environmental problems. These findings were synthesized and assessed with workshop participants, including local inhabitants, governmental agents, businesspeople, social entrepreneurs, and research experts, to unearth the best solution. The workshops resulted in the development of an e-point system, called Biwa Point , to promote and acknowledge voluntary environmental conservation activities, including beach cleaning. It may contribute to enhancing the socio-ecological capability of communities. - 人為的に管理された湿地生態系である水田は、群集生態学の諸プロセスを検証する野外メソコスム実験場と捉えると非常に面白いシステムである。水田は生産効率の向上を目的とした施肥を行うため、強いドナーコントロールが作用し、潜在的に栄養カスケードが起こりやすい系である。また、水田はバクテリアや微細藻類を基点とした微生物食物網が卓越した系であり、その生産物は最終的に移動性の高い魚類や鳥類などの大型動物にまで転換される。このように水田食物網に関与する生物の体サイズは1μm 未満から1m以上まで対数スケールで変化するため、個体群が変動する時間スケールも生物種間で大きく異なるという特徴をもつ。さらに、大型動物が水田と周辺生態系を空間的に連結することによってネットワーク構造が形成される。このように、異なる時空間スケールで繰り広げられる食物網の構造や機能を個体の計数や計量などの従来的な手法のみで評価するのは困難である。そこで、本稿では、食物網の有効な解析ツールとして注目を浴びている炭素・窒素安定同位体比分析を導入して、水田生態系の構造と機能、および、景観スケールから眺めた生態系ネットワークにおける水田の役割を定量的に評価する方法論を提案したい。Lead, The Ecological Society of Japan, 2012, Japanese Journal of Ecology, 62(2) (2), 207 - 215, English[Refereed]

- The effects of mixed cultivation of noble scallopChlamys nobilisand macroalgaMeyistotheca papulosaon their productivity and its potential in restoring eutrophic coastal ecosystems were examined under field and laboratory conditions. From the field, we compared the productivity among three cultivated systems, mono-culture ofC. nobilis, mono-culture ofM. papulosa, and their mixed culture, in the Uwa Sea. Field results showed the standing crop ofM. papulosawas significantly higher in the mixed cultivation than in the mono-cultivation. This result was supported by our laboratory experiments that indicatedM. papulosaeffectively assimilated ammonia excreted byC. nobilis. Under mixed cultivation in the field, we found no effects of the macroalgal covering on the growth of suspension feedingC. nobilis. Furthermore, the number of barnacles attached toC. nobiliswas fewer in the mixed culture than in the mono-culture. These results suggest that the incorporating mixed cultivation of scallops and macroalgae would be more profitable not only due to its higher algal productivity, but also due to lower labor costs in removing barnacles off the shell to improve market value. - Contamination and Distribution of Persistent Organochlorine and Organotin Compounds in Deep-Sea Organisms from East China SeaDeep-sea organisms collected from East China Sea (ECS) from depths of 89-512 m during 2001 to 2003 were analyzed for organochlorine (OC) and organotin (OT) compounds. Among OCs, concentrations of DDTs (up to 7900 ng/g lipid wt) were the highest and other OCs were approximately in the order of PCBs>CHLs>HCHs = HCB. The high DDT levels found in this study area and the higher ratio of p,p'-DDT indicates the continuing usage of this compound in this region. Among OTs, concentrations of butyltins (BTs) were the highest followed by triphenyltin (TPT). Concentrations of monooctyltin (MOcT) and dioctyltin (DOcT) in most of the samples were below detection limits. Significant positive correlations were found between δ^<15>N (‰) and lipid normalized concentrations of the most lipophilic OCs like PCBs, DDTs and CHLs showing their high biomagnification potential in marine food webs. No such relationship was found for HCHs, HCB, TBTs and TPT. Deep-sea fishes had increased burdens of DDTs, PCBs and CHLs when compared to fishes living in the upper water layer within a particular geographical origin. These findings suggest a long term downward vertical transport of organochlorine pollutants via the organic carbon flow and their recycling in the biophase of the deep-water. - 人口の集中する都市部沿岸域では、陸域からの有機物負荷や水産資源の過剰収奪による生物多様性の消失や生態系機能の低下が問題となっている。さらに近年、地球温暖化に伴う海洋構造の変化が沿岸生態系の生産性に与える影響も強く懸念されている。しかし、沿岸生態系に与えるこれらの人為的影響を網羅的かつ定量的に調査した研究は極めて少ないのが現状である。本研究は、愛媛県宇和海沿岸の主要な漁獲対象であり、底性生物群集中で優占する高次消費者ホタルジャコの炭素・窒素安定同位体比の変動パターンに着目することによって、人為的環境攪乱下における食物網を介した物質循環過程の変遷を長期的にモニタリングする手法を確立することを目的とした。2002年10月より月例採集によって得られたホタルジャコの食性を解析するとともに、本魚とその餌生物の安定同位体分析を行った。解析の結果、有光層下の生物が表層の植物プランクトン生産物によって賄われるという従来の定説「表層_--_底層カップリング」に反して、水深60mに生息するホタルジャコを中心とした底性生物群集の炭素供給源が浅海の付着藻類であることが判った。春のブルーム(藻類大発生)に伴って、表層由来の餌生物への一時的なシフトが見られるものの、その相対的重要性は低かった。このような生産構造の歪みは、当海域で大量発生する赤潮原因藻類の渦鞭毛藻を摂食する一次消費者の不在によって、食物網を介した高次栄養段階への物質移送が停滞するためであると推察された。この時期、三次消費者であるホタルジャコが一次消費者である橈脚類を頻繁に摂食することによって、窒素同位体比の顕著な低下が認められた。宇和海の主要な二次消費者であるカタクチイワシ仔稚魚の資源量減少により、食物網構造が不安定化している可能性が示唆された。ECOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, 2005, Abstracts of the Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of Japan, 52(0) (0), 124 - 124, Japanese

- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Challenging Research (Exploratory), Challenging Research (Exploratory), Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, Jun. 2019 - Mar. 2022, Principal investigatorMolecular mechanisms of fish spawning migration: testing the olfactory imprinting hypothesis1)耳石の地球化学解析を用いた回遊履歴推定手法の適用:硬組織である魚類耳石を用いて研究対象種となるフナ類の生息環境履歴を個体レベルで推定するために、2021年度はニゴロブナ・ギンブナの産卵遡上親魚39尾、水田水路で生育した稚魚45尾から耳石を採取した。しかし、新型コロナウイルス感染症蔓延防止措置の度重なる発令により高エネルギー研究所が所有する硬X線吸収微細構造解析装置を利用して耳石の解析を実施することができなかった。 2)嗅覚記憶の至近メカニズムの実験的検証:ニゴロブナの母田回帰能を検証するために野生産卵遡上親魚を用いて遡上水路の選好性実験を行った。野生親魚は、遡上水路水に対して有意な正の選好性を示し、雄より雌で選好性が高い傾向を示した。 3)嗅覚記憶に関与する遺伝子の網羅的発現解析:2020-2021年度に採集した琵琶湖固有の回遊種ニゴロブナと非回遊性近縁種ギンブナの内、それぞれの成魚を8尾、ニゴロブナの稚魚7尾とギンブナの稚魚8尾について、嗅覚・脳神経系組織(嗅上皮・嗅球・終脳)からRNAを抽出し、遺伝子発現パタンを調べるためにRNAseqに供試した。得られたリードをキンギョのリファレンスゲノムにマッピングし、2種の成魚および稚魚において発現量に差が見られる遺伝子を検出した。さらに、GO解析を用いて、それら遺伝子の機能的特徴を調べた。解析の結果、成魚では、ギンブナに較べてニゴロブナの嗅上皮で神経系や嗅覚受容体関連の遺伝子が高発現していた。終脳では、約3,000種の遺伝子で発現量変動が観察されたが、嗅覚記憶との関連が示唆される特定の遺伝子は検出されなかった。稚魚では、ニゴロブナの嗅上皮・嗅球・終脳いずれの組織でもミトコンドリアなど代謝関連遺伝子の発現量が有意に増減していたが、嗅覚・記憶と関連した遺伝子群での発現差異は検出されなかった。
- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 基盤研究(C), 基盤研究(C), 総合地球環境学研究所, Apr. 2019 - Mar. 2022, Coinvestigator有機態リン再生過程とリン酸-酸素安定同位体解析に基づくリン循環の解明野外の有機態リン分解過程は部分的解明に留まり、リン循環の全体像と素過程の関係は理解が進んでいない。本研究では、細胞外酵素であるリン酸エステル分解酵素による有機態リンの加水分解反応の結果生成するオルトリン酸をイオンクロマトグラフィーで測定することにより、リン酸エステラーゼごとに分解量を見積る分析法を確立し、リン酸酸素同位体比を用いたアプローチと併せ、湖沼微生物群動態とリン循環の関係について解明を進めている。 リン循環の再生過程に寄与する有機態リン成分を明らかにするため、複数種のリン酸エステラーゼ(アルカリホスファターゼ・ホスホジエステラーゼI・無機ピロホスファターゼ)を用いて野外試験水の有機態リン濃度を成分ごとに調べた。一定の反応時間を経過後に、リン酸エステラーゼによって生成したオルトリン酸をイオンクロマトグラフィーで定量することによって、モリブデン青法(SRP)測定のように酸添加による有機態リンの非特異的分解を抑えた。内湖への流入成分が、2つの内湖に流入後にどう変動を示すのかを調べるための予備的測定を行い、日本陸水学会で研究発表を行った。内湖の滞留時間が短くなる灌漑期の7月の流入水の有機態リン濃度は非灌漑期の11月に比べると高く、リン酸モノエステル結合が多かった。反対に、流入水の([リン酸ジエステル結合+ピロリン酸ジエステル結合)] / [リン酸モノエステル結合]比は11月に高く、7月に低かった。 内湖の湖水が示すエステラーゼ活性を考慮すると、平湖・柳平湖に流入後は、いずれの有機態リンもリン再生に寄与すると考えられた。孔径の異なるフィルターの濾別によってサイズ画分ごとに有機態リンの分解量を調べた結果、11月試料は0.2μmろ水画分にリン酸モノエステル結合が占める割合がGF/Fろ水画分に比べて少なく、湖水中で小さな画分の有機態リンまで利用されている可能性が考えられた。

An inflow-source of phosphorus from watershed was farm land, and the intermittent inputs of nutrients from littoral slope to the offshore might induce phytoplankton bloom in May and June. Amount of deep groundwater inflowing to the lake basin estimated with a radon-tracer method was almost equal to that of the shallow one. Phosphate concentrations in the groundwater showed several orders higher than those in the lake water, suggesting that this was the one of the main source of phosphorus loading to the lake. Empirical equations for estimating zooplankton production from water temperature, TP and individual density were made, and the annual productions estimated from the equations were 7.6-58.6 gC/m2/y, being <10% of phytoplankton primary production.

Research was conducted at Rayong. It is presumed that it will have high invasive potentiality because it preyed fishes and long armed shrimp, was state the highest position of food web and has possibility of competition to carnivorous native species based on stable isotope analysis. It already established in research site of a reservoir and next to here is the only one peat swamp in Thailand. People use aquatic resources and water as top water from the swamp and expect sustainability while there is almost nothing except for game fishing in reservoir. We held symposium with stuff of department where legislates invasive alien fish act , fisheries bureau on 2020. We brought forward concrete proposals based on results of our interdisciplinary research viz., the counterplan based on precautionary principle, prohibition of release anywhere, the necessity of urgent academic research that contribute extermination of it.

As a result, we have shown that there are organs that store isotopic history in fishes and mammals. We also showed that the migration history of marine organisms can be estimated by using the isotopic distribution and isotopic fractionation process. Furthermore, we were able to establish a wide range of ecosystem traceability methodologies, such as finding out the origin of the seeds and clarifying the nutrient acquisition of heterotrophic plants by using multi-elemental isotope ratios.

The FTR alternated between monomictic and meromictic lakes when winter was cold and warm, respectively. During stratification period following the warm winter, CH4 storage developed and anaerobic MOB dominated in profundal waters. Vertical profiles of methane concentrations and MOB communities in the Seven Lakes were similar to those of FTR in warm years, while the Lake Biwa resembled the FTR in cold years. However, there was no marked latitudinal variation in methanotrophic food webs in relation to their reliance on methane production, suggesting that lakes in lower latitude have the higher potential for atmospheric CH4 emission.

Methane oxidizing bacteria (MOB) which assimilate dissolved methane aerobically or anaerobically have great impacts on methane cycling in freshwater ecosystems. Methanotrophic food webs (MFWs), in which methane-derived carbon is trophically transferred through the MOB and embedded within a food web, serve as a carbon recycling unit in lake ecosystems. In a deep subtropical Fei-Tsui Reservoir which is located in Taipei, methane profiles and MOB community composition showed characteristics intermediate between subtropical monomictic and tropical meromictic lakes. Our four-year monitoring revealed that typhoon-induced disturbance of thermal stratification and the subsequent decrease in profundal methane storage due to methane oxidation can be the primary limno-physical mechanism to affect the relative contribution of MFWs to the overall trophic carbon flows.

We got some ecological knowledge on relationships between fluvial biodiversity and its nutrient cycling functions, using a variety of methods, such as phosphate oxygen isotope analysis, hydrological modeling on nutrient spiral metrics and particulate phosphate speciation analysis with sequential extraction, to study phosphorus cycling in the river ecosystems.

Focusing on this size-scaling law, we aimed at constructing a conceptual framework of “ecosystem metabolism” to formulate a relationship between size structure and ecosystem-level metabolism of biological communities. We examined what determines the ecosystem metabolism of plankton communities in resource-controlled lake mesocosms. Our experimental results did not support the prediction deduced from the size-scaling law in that mass-specific ecosystem metabolism would be higher in communities with smaller-sized plankton. Instead, wefound that plankton stoichiometry (i.e., C:N:P) was the most influential factor for the ecosystem metabolism. We suggest that the availability of least nutrients can limit the rate of transferring metabolites to all member of community under trophic interactions, consequently regulating the metabolic rate of whole community. To understand controlling mechanisms for ecosystem metabolism, we emphasize the importance of synthetic model in which ecological stoichiometry as well as allometric scaling is integrated into the metabolic theory.

Taking the advantage of molecular technique, such as transcriptome and QTL analyses, we elucidated that fish trophic polymorphism(planktivory-benthivory species pair) is under the control of polygenic variation in a large number of loci with small additive effects and found that the expression pattern of swimming performance-related genes is shared among different phylogenies with species pair, suggesting the possibility of convergent evolution of adaptation to pelagic environments. We also experimentally demonstrated that fish trophic polymorphism altered not only food web properties, such as food chain length, prey-predator mass ratio and community-average trophic level, but also community respiration as ecosystem functioning through trophic cascading effects. Using theoretical models, we finally corroborated that the evolution of phenotypically plastic or polymorphic traits have ecosystem consequences in terms of food web configuration and stability.

By comparison of the ecto- and endoparasite fauna between six regions in the Seto Island Sea, this study has revealed hat 1-year red sea bream consist of several local stocks there. The population of black seabream was differentiated, based on the endoparasite fauna, into some stocks in coastal waters around Japan.

- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 若手研究(B), 若手研究(B), 京都大学, 2006 - 2007, Principal investigator琵琶湖をモデルシステムとした沿岸食物網の時空間構造解析琵琶湖生態系の食物網構造の時空間動態を把握し、その湖内変異をもたらす機構を解明するために、琵琶湖沿岸33地点において生物採集調査と生物試料の安定同位体分析を実施した。湖沼食物網の生産基盤となる懸濁態有機物(POM)の濃度と炭素・窒素安定同位体比を測定したところ、一次生産の大部分は植物プランクトンによって占められ、付着藻類の寄与は低いことが分かった。また、水田割合や人口密度が高い河川の沿岸部で陸起源有機物の寄与率が増加した。冬季になると、陸起源有機物の流入量は減少するが、波当たりの強い地域で陸起源有機物の寄与率が増加した。沿岸域に堆積した陸起源有機物が波浪によって再懸濁されることが示唆された。POMの質や量は湖沼食物網構造を規定する重要な要因となりうるが、集水域の土地利用形態や沿岸の物理特性によって季節的・局所的に大きく変化することが明らかとなった。次に、湖沼の食物連鎖長の時空間変異を調べるために高次消費者に位置するオオクチバスの栄養段階をその窒素同位体比から推定した。食物連鎖長は季節的に変動し、同一季節においても地点間で大きな変異を示した。食物連鎖長の地点間変異は動物プランクトン群集の平均栄養段階によって説明可能であった。動物プランクトン群集に占める肉食性カイアシ類の割合が高いほど、平均栄養段階が増加する有意な傾向を示した。一次生産性や魚類による捕食圧を環境変数として組み込んだ回帰モデルを解析したが、食物連鎖長に影響する有意な要因は見つからなかった。実験的操作が困難な野外において栄養関係を因果論的に論じることには限界があるため、室内実験によって食物網の変動機構を解析する必要性が示唆された。

The bottom-up constraint may be prominent where the abundance of benthic organisms in the grazing-food-chain is restricted by a seasonally lowest production, referring chiefly to attached algae, and large fluctuations in the abundance of primary producers provide a resource that is eventually utilized by benthic organisms of the detritus-food-chain. This hypotheses help to explain, for the lakes we cite, the facts that diverse grazing-food-chain organisms live on the littoral bottom of tropical lakes where there is relatively constant large algal production due to suitable conditions of water temperature and light penetration through the year ; while on the other hand, detritus-food-chain organisms are predominant on the littoral bottom of a boreal lake with seasonally fluctuating algal production and its pronounced lowest production in a year. The results based on the field surveys (measurement of DO based primary production and respiration, benthic animal community and their food, amount of detritus) during in the term of this project practically verify above hypothesis.

Their sex roles are usually reversed, that is, females are the primary competitors for access to mates. Among cardinalfishes, male and female strategies in reproduction differ interspecifically depending on their ecology. In the field research at Murote Beach, Shikoku, Japan, in 1999 and 2000, our attention focused on the function of territories of female Apogon notatus that are formed from two or three months before spawning and kept throughout the breeding season. Main opponents against which females defended their territories were not conspecific females but schooling males. At the moment of spawning when the egg mass was transferred from the female to the male, the mass was often eaten by schooling males and wrasses. The frequency of this cannibalism rose late in the breeding season when the proportion of schooling individuals in the population increased. These and other results indicated that the primary function of female territories is to avoid egg predation from schooling males.
