Abstract Titan’s stratosphere has been observed in a superrotation state, where the atmosphere rotates many times faster than the surface does. Another characteristic of Titan’s atmosphere is the presence of a thick haze layer. In this paper, we performed numerical experiments using a general circulation model to explore the effects of the haze layer on the stratospheric superrotation. We employed a semigray radiation model of Titan’s atmosphere following McKay et al., which takes account of sunlight absorption by the haze particles. The phase change of methane or seasonal changes were not taken into account. Our model with radiation parameters tuned for Titan yielded a global eastward wind around the equator with larger velocities at higher altitudes, except at around 70 km, after 105 Earth days. Although the atmosphere is not in an equilibrium state, the zonal wind profiles are approximately consistent with the observed one. By changing the parameters of the radiation model, we found that the intensity and the location of the maximum zonal wind velocity highly depended on the optical thickness and the altitude of the haze layer, respectively. Analysis of our experiments suggests that the quasi-stationary stratospheric superrotation is maintained by the balance between the meridional circulation decoupled from the surface and the eddies that transport angular momentum equatorward. This is different from, but similar to, the so-called Gierasch mechanism, in which momentum is supplied from the surface. This structure may explain the no-wind region at about 80 km in altitude.

The operation of the Earth Simulator started in March, 2002, and 7 years have passed. For these years, the Earth Simulator has been used by not only researchers of JAMSTEC but also many researchers of the domestic and international institutions, and many remarkable results have been made. The Earth Simulator Center was established at the same time as the birth of the Earth Simulator. The researchers of the Earth Simulator Center have also developed new simulation technologies.
The simulation is the only one method by which we can predict the future scientifically. Therefore, it has the important role in the science as well as the technology which can contribute to the life of the people, and has the important meaning in modeling the future of the human beings.

An aqua planet experiment is performed to investigate the dependencies of the model representations of the equatorial precipitation activities on the horizontal and vertical resolution. The numerical model utilized is AFES, an AGCM optimized for the Earth Simulator. With the resolution of horizontal truncation at T39 and 48 vertical levels (referred to as the standard run), there appear precipitation disturbances of the scale of several grids, which are advected westward by the background wind. When the vertical resolution is increased to 96 levels from the standard run, precipitation tends to have weak intensity but be widely distributed, and the westward propagating grid-scale disturbances are rarely observed. When the horizontal resolution is increased to T319 from the standard run, a hierarchical structure appears. A large-scale eastward moving precipitation structure is superimposed on a small-scale westward moving structure.

The Earth Simulator (ES) with 40 Tflops peak performance, which is currently the fastest massive parallel computer for general purpose, began operation in March 2002. The ES provides opportunities to execute several decadal or hundreds-year integrations of the eddy-resolving global ocean simulations. In other words, an era of multi-year global simulations using the eddy-resolving ocean model has started. In this paper, the overviews of the ES and a series of our eddy-resolving global simulations using the ES are introduced. Our first attempt of eddy-resolving global simulations was a 50-year spin-up run driven by climatological forcing. The run simulated the mean state of oceanic fields and the eddy activities very realistically. Following the 50-year spin-up run, we executed a hindcast run from 1950 to 2003 and a tracer run incorporated with chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Our preliminary analysis of the hindcast run shows that the amplitude and phase of the simulated interannual variabilities such as El Nino and Indian Ocean Dipole coincide well with the oceanographic observations. Also, our tracer run captured the observed CFC-11 distribution in the South Atlantic very well, especially in the deep layer. Our realistic results seem to owe much to the realistic model bottom topography and the improved ocean circulation due to the ultra-high-resolution of our model. Our research task team is now expanding collaborative researches with external research groups and individuals, and planning to open the results of our eddy-resolving simulations to the research communitv under certain conditions.

  • Dust lifting process represented by a high resolution Mars general circulation model
Takahashi Yoshiyuki O., Hayashi Yoshi-Yuki, Odaka Masatsugu, Ohfuchi Wataru
日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2008, Japanese, 日本流体力学会, In order to investigate the effects of small and medium scale atmospheric circulation and disturbances on dust lifting process on Mars, the high resolution simulations of the Martian atmosphere are performed by using a Mars general circulation model. The simulations with horizontal resolutions of 89, 44, and 22km show that the dust lifting amount increases with increasing resolution. The increase of dust lifting amount is mainly caused by the lifting around several regions with characteristic orographic features, such as the Valles Marineris and the Hellas basin. The analysis of dust lifting phenomena in the Valles Marineris region shows that the superposition of local slope wind and the return flow of meridional circulation causes the large dust lifting in the region. This implies that the effects of small and medium scale local orographic circulation play an important role in lifting dust on Mars.

日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2005, Japanese, 日本流体力学会, Aqua planet experiments are performed in order to investigate horizontal and vertical resolution dependencies of equatorial precipitation activities. The numerical model utilized is AGCM for Earth Simulator (AFES). The cumulus convective scheme is not used. With the increase of vertical resolution from 24 to 96 levels, there are not major differences in precipitation pattern. With the increase of horizontal resolution from T39 to T319, the eastward propagating envelope structures of the westward propagating individual grid-scale disturbances become evident.

Numerical experiments using atmospheric general circulation models are conducted with “Aquaplanet” lower boundary conditions where whole of the earth’s surface is covered with ocean. Main findings are as follows. First, a westward propagating large scale organization of precipitation with north-south "zigzag" structure is newly identified, in addition to the well known eastward propagating structure. Second, the structure of 'Walker circulation’, a global stationary circulation feature forced by the anomaly of sea surface temperature, is highly sensitive to the average north-south surface temperature difference of the ocean. Sensitivity of both results to the model specification including physical parameterizations and spatial resolution promotes a new international aquaplanet general circulation model intercomparison project, APE2.

By using numerical modelling and data analysis, we have discovered the mid-latitude ocean influences on a wide range of atmospheric phenomena, including termination of Baiu rain season over the northwestern North Pacific, the route and strength of tropical cyclones, Europe blocking and its impact on cold spells. We have found that the pressure adjustment mechanism works over major western boundary currents in the mid-latitudes globally. We have developed a new diagnostic method that enable us to determine mechanisms near surface (10 m altitude) winds for time-mean field, and have showed that both the pressure adjustment mechanism and the vertical mixing mechanism working but differently. Also, we have reported for the first time that observed decadal variability of the Kuroshio Extension is due to the jet-trapped Rossby wave, and that the decadal Kuroshio Extension changes impact Japanese coastal sea-level.

Comprehensive analyses are made on the output from the general circulation model experiments under idealized lower boundary conditions in the Aqua-Planet Experiment Project(APE), which was participated by 14 modeling groups aiming at climate studies or numerical weather prediction in the world. The results demonstrate a great variety among the structure of tropical precipitation disturbances simulated in the participating models, both in wavenumber space and in real space. In addition, new theoretical insights are obtained, one of which concerns the spectral property of the hierarchical rainfall structure and another concerns the variety of large-scale atmospheric response to a localized sea surface temperature anomaly placed on the equator.
