- Abstract Around one-third of the world’s most carbon-rich ecosystems, mangrove forests, have already been destroyed in Thailand owing to coastal development and aquaculture. Improving these degraded areas through mangrove plantations can restore various coastal ecosystem services, including CO2 absorption and protection against wave action. This study examines the biomass of three coastal mangrove plantations (Avicennia alba) of different ages in Samut Prakarn province, Central Thailand. Our aim was to understand the forest biomass recovery during the early stages of development, particularly fine root biomass expansion. In the chronosequence of the mangrove plantations, woody biomass increased by 40% over four years from 79.7 ± 11.2 Mg C ha-1 to 111.7 ± 12.3 Mg C ha−1. Fine root biomass up to a depth of 100 cm was 4.47 ± 0.33 Mg C ha−1, 4.24 ± 0.63 Mg C ha−1, and 6.92 ± 0.32 Mg C ha−1 at 10, 12, and 14 year-old sites, respectively. Remarkably, the fine root biomass of 14-year-old site was significantly higher than those of the younger sites due to increase of the biomass at 15–30 cm and 30–50 cm depths. - The significance of aquatic lateral carbon (C) export in mangrove ecosystems highlights the extensive contribution of aquatic pathways to the net ecosystem carbon budget. However, few studies have investigated lateral fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and inorganic carbon (DIC), partly due to methodological difficulty. Therefore, we evaluated area-based lateral C fluxes in a small mangrove estuary that only had one exit for water exchange to the coast. We sampled water from the mouth of the creek and integrated discharge and consecutive concentration of mangrove-derived C (ΔC). Then, we estimated the area-normalized C fluxes based on the inundated mangrove area. DIC and DOC concentrations at the river mouth increased during ebb tide during both summer and winter. We quantified the ΔC in the estuary using a two-component conservative mixing model of freshwater and seawater. DIC and DOC proportions of ΔC concentrations at the river mouth during ebb tide was between 34% and 56% in the winter and 26% and 42% in the summer, respectively. DIC and DOC fluxes from the estuary were estimated to be 1.36 g C m−2 d−1 and 0.20 g C m−2 d−1 in the winter and 3.35 g C m−2 d−1 and 0.86 g C m−2 d−1 in the summer, respectively. - Characterization of hot-water extracts from co-compost of dried sewage sludge and bamboo chips and effect of compost application on the growth of black soybean (Glycine max)<p>Sewage sludge is generated 2.26 million Mg annually in Japan, and its dealing is one of the social problems. This study aimed to promote the application of dried sewage sludge in farmlands for recycling purposes. We composted sludge and bamboo chips in the ratios of 5 : 5, 7 : 3, and 9 : 1. Characteristics of hot water extracts during composting were analyzed approximately every week until the end of composting process (41 days) by testing inhibition of germination of Japanese mustard spinach (<i>Brassica rapa</i> var. <i>perviridis</i>) and by chemical analyses such as those using UV-vis spectroscopy and those involving dissolved organic carbon measurement. The concentration of ammonia, which is one of the strongest odor sources, decreased by about 60% in the first 2 weeks of composting. The pH, electrical conductivity, and E2/E3 tended to decrease, whereas specific UV absorbance (SUVA<sub>254</sub>) tended to increase during composting, suggesting the progression of humification and maturation of composts. Although the 7 : 3 and 9 : 1 compost extracts demonstrated considerable germination inhibition in the early stages of composting, the inhibition was alleviated as maturation progressed to 28 days. Inhibition was not observed in the 5 : 5 compost extract, and heavy metals did not exceed the safety standard, so the compost did not exhibit harmful effects on crop growth or safety. We also performed three replicates of a field growth experiment using Tanbaguro black soybean (<i>Glycine max</i>) with and without addition of 50-day-old compost (5 : 5, 7 : 3, and 9 : 1). Results showed that addition of the composts significantly increased the main stem length and the number of pods (p<0.01). Soybean yield was the highest in the 9 : 1 compost addition group, although this difference was not significant. These results suggest that composting of dried sewage sludge and bamboo chips is effective in agricultural production as it recycles local resources, reduces odor, and does not inhibit germination.</p>Corresponding, Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, Aug. 2018, Jpn. - Effects of Large-Scale Composting Processes on Maturity and Humification of Cattle Manure大規模堆肥化処理方式の違いが牛ふん尿堆肥の腐植化に及ぼす影響を調べるために、堆積方式と撹拌方式により製造された堆肥から抽出された腐植物質の化学的および光学的特性を比較した。いずれの方式についても、堆肥化に伴うC/N比や易分解有機物量の減少、幼植物発芽試験における腐熟化の進行が認められた。一方、処理方式により、堆肥から抽出された腐植酸の光学的特性が著しく異なり、堆積方式では腐植酸の黒色化とカルボキシル基などの官能基構造の発達を伴う腐植化の進行が顕著であったのに対し、撹拌方式では堆肥化後も未熟でリグニン構造が残存した腐植酸であった。植物の生育に影響を及ぼす可能性がある動的な腐食物質を水抽出して比較したところ、堆積方式ではフルボ酸の増加と腐植化に伴う構造変化が認められたが、撹拌方式ではフルボ酸が減少した。処理方式が異なる堆肥の圃場還元においては、腐植化の違いを考慮した使い分けが必要である。農業施設学会, Jun. 2011, Journal of the Society of Agricultural Structures, Japan, 42(1) (1), 8 - 17, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

In the present study, the effect of β-glucan purified from baker's yeast (BBG) on the rat cecum contents and fecal excretion was examined using cellulose (CE) as a negative control fiber. Rats were fed with AIN-93M-based diet containing BBG or CE at 1%, 3%, or 5%, or a nonfiber diet for 4 weeks. Cecal tissue weight was significantly increased by 5% BBG diet compared with 5% CE diet, whereas the pH of cecal content was significantly decreased. Short-chain fatty acid including acetate, propionate, and n-butyrate in the rat cecum was significantly increased by 5% BBG diet compared with 5% CE diet, indicating that increasing the content of short-chain fatty acids in the cecum decreased the pH of cecal content. In addition, the water content of feces was also significantly increased by 5% BBG diet compared with 5% CE diet. These results suggest that BBG promote cecal fermentation and retain water in the large-intestinal lumen. - 非アロフェン黒ぼく土における菌核粒子の分布と土壌化学性との関係Sclerotium grain is the resting body of ectomycorrhizal fungi found in forest soils. A melanic-spherical shape in approximately 1-2mm diameter characterizes the external feature of the grain, and a hollow structure with honeycomb transverse wall appears inside the grain. In our previous studies, we reported a high aluminum concentration inside sclerotium grains and suggested the close relationship between the status of active aluminum and the distribution of these grains in Andosols (Watanabe et al., 2001; 2002). Here we examined the chemical properties focused on active aluminum and carbon in several nonallophanic Andosols under forest vegetation for further discussions on the regulating factor of the distribution of the sclerotium grains. In each studied soil profile, the mean weight of sclerotium grain (mg grain^<-1>) had a tendency to increase with the content of exchangeable aluminum, content of total organic carbon and nitrogen, carbon content of humic acid extracted from soils. The ratio of Alp to total organic C(Al_p/T-C) showed a strong negative correlation between the mean weight sclerotium grains regardless of profiles. - The decolorization of humic acids from five different humic layers of ages from 8, 000 to 30, 000yrs BP by Coriolus consors IFO9078 was studied to understand the factors affecting the stability of humic substances in buried humic layers of the Holocene to late Pleistocene, which developed in weathered tephra beds called loam beds in Japan. After three weeks of incubation, the buried humic acids showed clear decolorization, but the magnitude of decolorization was lower than that of the humic acids from various Holocene surface soils in a previous study. Although the buried humic acids in this study were obtained from layers of different soil ages, the elemental compositions of all humic acids have similar highly dehydrated properties. These results suggest that the high resistance of the buried humic acids against microbial degradation may be due not only to the formation of humic-clay complex and the decline of microbial activity but also to the chemical properties of humic substances.Japan Association for Quaternary Research, 2004, The Quaternary Research, 43(5) (5), 367 - 373, Japanese

- To obtain fundamental information on the nature and properties of sediments in dammed lakes, we investigated various properties of sediment from dammed Lake Ono using soil scientific methods. Furthermore, the Lake Ono sediment was characterized by comparing its various properties with those of yellow soil. 1) Lake Ono is a eutrophic lake which phosphorus is a limiting factor. 2) The pH, exchangeable base content, and degree of base saturation of the sediment were much higher than those of the soil. 3) The clay content of the sediment was 2 times higher than that of the soil. The texture of the sediment was Heavy clay (HC), while that of the soil was Clay loam (CL). There were no large differences on organic carbon and total nitrogen contents, and the C/N ratio between the sediment and the soil. 5) The "combine"-form humus content of the sediment was higher than that of the soil. The reverse was true for the "free"-form humus content. 6) The X-ray diffraction patterns of the clay fraction of the sediment were almost the same as those of the clay fraction of the soil. 7) The elemental composition and 13C-NMR spectrum of the fulvic acid isolated from the sediment were similar to those of the soil. - An attempt to create a soil amendment containing Type A humic acid-like substances was done by means of thermal incubation of a mixture of rice straw (RS) and coal fly ash (CFA). The specific objectives of the study are the following: 1) To make an effective use of CFA, a by-product of coal-fired power stations, and 2) To fix carbon in the soil for a long term period as Type A humic acids which are known to be hard to decompose. Optimal incubation conditions to create Type A humic acid-like substances were examined. Furthermore, the chemical properties of the created samples were analyzed. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1) It was found that among the three temperature conditions imposed (60, 75 and 90℃), 90℃ was the most suitable for the progress of humification, and that a water supply was very necessary. 2) Since the humic acid-like substances extracted from the incubated sample showed a high degree of humification at the pH range of 3-4, the increase in the degree of humification of the humic acid-like,substances may be accelerated by maintaining a low pH condition during incubation. 3) The highest RF value was observed in the mixture with a dry weight ratio of 1:1 (CFA:RS) after 180 d incubation at 90℃ with water. The 〓logK and RF values of the humic acid-like substances extracted with the mixed solution (pH 7) of 0.1 mol L^<-1> Na_4P_2O_7 and 0.1 mol L^<-1> H_4P_2O_7 was 0.686 and 94.2 respectively, and these humic acid-like substances corresponded to Type A humic acids. 4) The yields of Type A humic acid-like substances from the incubated mixture of CFA and RS (dry weight ratio of 1:1 and 1:2) were estimated to be at least 13.6% and 14.6% of the carbon contents of the samples at the start of the incubation, respectively. 5) The contents of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus in the incubated sample were smaller than those reported for other soil amendments such as rice straw compost. - Humification of three plant residues with Sakurajima volcanic ash as influenced by phosphate addition and low pH conditionThe influence of phosphate addition and low pH condition on humification of three plant residues were determined by performing model thermal incubations of the plant residues rice straw (Oryza sativa), broadleaf sawdust (Kashiwa, Quercus dentate), and coniferous sawdust (Japanese cider, Cryptomeria japonica) with Sakurajima volcanic ash. Four experimental set ups were prepared: (Group 1) plant residues only; (Group 2) plant residues with Sakurajima volcanic ash; (Group 3) plant residues with Sakurajima volcanic ash and Na_2HPO_4; and (Group 4) plant residues with Sakurajima volcanic ash and Na_2HPO_4 with the pH adjusted to 5. Humic acids were extracted using a mixed solution of 0.02 M Na_4P_2O_7 and 0.1 M NaOH. Extractable Fe and Al oxides were determined using three different extraction methods: dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (DCB), acid-oxalate (TAMM), and Na-pyrophosphate (NaPP). The pH values obtained for Group 1 samples ranged from 2.75 to 6.21; Group 2 samples were from 3.74 to 4.78; Group 3 samples were near neutral or alkaline, ranging from 6.93 to 7.59; and the values for Group 4 samples ranged from 5.38 to 6.28. The ΔlogK values decreased with longer incubation times while the RF values increased. Group 3 samples showed a decrease in RF values compared to Group 2. Type A humic acids were produced only from Group 2 samples derived from rice straw and broad leaf sawdust after about 120 incubation days. The amounts of the Fe and Al from all types of extraction methods decreased in Groups 3 and 4 indicating a possible binding up of these components with phosphate ions. It can be concluded that addition of Na_2HPO_4 increased the pH of the system and at the same time lowers the solubility of Fe and Al present in the Sakurajima volcanic ash. However, adjusting the pH to 5 to maintain lower pH conditions, has slightly increased the solubility of Fe and Al. Therefore, the higher the amount of extractable Fe and Al, the higher the RF values indicating a faster humification process. The relatively small amounts of Fe and Al in higher pH values and their reaction with phosphate rendered these components ineffective in hastening the humification process. - 京都議定書における温室効果ガス削減目標が設定されて以来,エネルギー消費への関心が広がるとともに炭素動態に関するデータが蓄積されてきた。我が国で削減目標('90年比6%減)に対する約束期間(2008~2012)内の達成見込みが得られた(2012年12月現在)背景には詳細なデータの積み上げがあった。その膨大なデータには各土地利用における土壌炭素変化量の算出も大きく貢献している。土壌炭素の変化量を算出するためには土壌炭素賦存量が必要であり,そのデータベースの構築と算出法の開発は大きな成果といえる。この成果は,さらに続く排出削減目標に対し,算出法の最適化を図るための基盤になると考えられる。そこで,本シンポジウムでは,国土面積の占有割合が高い森林と農地での土壌炭素賦存量と変化量の算出結果と今後の課題を取り上げた。一方,それら土地利用に含まれない領域として都市域の土壌炭素賦存量算出の問題点も指摘した。さらに,土壌炭素変化量に影響する土壌有機物の分解特性と存在形態に関する話題を挙げた。また,様々な土壌における有機物の多様性を質的データで示し,さらにその変化の方向性についても論及した。土壌炭素に関する量的・質的な取扱いの両面から日本の土壌炭素賦存量について論議を行った。Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, Jun. 2013, Japanese Journal of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, 84(3) (3), 224 - 229, Japanese[Refereed][Invited]Introduction scientific journal

- 黒ボク土における腐植の集積とメカニズム典型的な黒ボク土は黒く厚いA層をもつ。この黒さは言うまでもなく腐植によるものであり,黒ボク土が広く分布する我が国ではひときわこの黒い腐植についての関心が高く,化学構造特性や生成過程(腐植化過程)に関する多くの研究がおこなわれてきた。近年では陸域生態系における炭素貯留庫としての土壌の役割が認知されるようになりチェルノーゼムと双璧をなす黒ボク土の腐植集積メカニズムに対してより多くの関心が寄せられている。そこで本講演では黒く多量の炭素を蓄積している黒ボク土の腐植層は他の土壌の腐植と何が違うのか,どのようにしてそれらが生成されるのか,なぜ長期にわたって蓄積するのか,という話題にそって現況を概説する。なお,黒ボク土の土壌腐植の性質をもっとも反映するのは腐植酸であるため,主に腐植酸に焦点を絞って話を進める。ペドロジスト編集部, Dec. 2011, ペドロジスト, 55(2) (2), 93 - 98, Japanese

- Occurrence of Smectite on the Pumice Surface Derived from Taal Volcano in the PhillppinesThe pumice layer was derived from the northwest fringe of Taal Volcano somma in Kaybagal, Tagaytay City in the Philippines. It has a gravel diameter of 3 to 5 centimeters (cm). The pumice gravel has a yellow surface color and a black inner color. These were observed using an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The chemical and mineralogical constituents were determined using a electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA), and X-ray diffraction apparatus. The results obtained from the optical microscope and SEM showed bubbles in the black or inner part of the pumice, while the surface showed weathered fine particles. Some of the bubbles observed were also partly weathered. The X-ray diffraction pattern showed smectite as the predominant mineral in the yellow surface layer, while amorphous materials were predominate in the black inner part. - Changes of Plant Vegetation and Soils with Years in Man-made Forests Formed by Close Planting Nursery Stocks of Laurel Trees 2. Changes of Soil Properties with YearsChanges of soil profiele, soil physico-chemical properties and micro organism biomass with years were observed in man-made forests formed by close planting of nursery stocks of laurel trees and in a natural forest. Ages of the man-made forests were 1 year (ZR), 11 years (TN) and 18 years (TW) after planting trees respectively. Soil profiles showed the development of organic and humic layers with years as the increase of the depths of O and A horizon, darkness of soil colors, contents of roots and compactness. Though soil texture of man-made forest soils and a natural forest soil were loamy sand to sandy loam and clay loam respectively, it was difficult to recognize that soil texture changed for 10-20 years in man-made forest soils. Decreasing of bulk density and increasing of pore volume were observed with years except for some layers of TN. The starting depths of the constant lower values of softness decreased with years except TN and the values of softness in the subsoil of TN was lower than those of others. - Changes of Plant Vegetation and Soils with Years in Man-made Forests Formed by Close Planting Nursery Stocks of Laurel Trees 1.Changes of Vegetation with YearsChanges of plant vegetation with years were observed in man-made forests formed by close planting of laurel nursery trees and in a natural forest. Ages of the man-made forests were lyear (ZR), 11 years (TN) and 18 years (TW) after planting trees and that of the natural forest (NF) was more than 100 years. 1) The height and structure of vegetation of TN and TW were 7. 5 to 10 m and 3 layers respectively and they were smaller than those of NF. 2) Though the numbers of trees per unit area in man-made forests were 2 to 4 times more than that of NF, the basal area (BA) and the D^2H of TN and TW were only 30% and 10% of NF by per tree respectively. 3) Number and D^2H of trees were occupied by a few kinds of dominant species in ZR, TN and NF in contrast with by several ones in TW. 4) Though the maximum frequency was 4-6 m in both TN and TW, TW also had the secondary maximum in 1.3-2 m. The frequency of NF decreased from gradually 30% in 1.3-2 m with increasing of heights. 5) Its is supposed that the man-made forests are on the way to a natural forest and they develop their vegetation with increasing stratification and/or biomass, e. g. - 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 基盤研究(B), 早稲田大学, 01 Apr. 2019 - 31 Mar. 2023バイオチャーが森林生態系の土壌圏と生態系炭素隔離機能に及ぼす中長期的影響の解明本研究の目的は野外におけるバイオチャー散布実験を通して、生態系の炭素隔離機能の中長期的変化と、その変化に関わる土壌圏の応答メカニズムを明らかにすることである。散布後6年目となる本年度も継続して、生態学的手法に基づく炭素循環プロセスの測定を実施した。昨年度までと同様に、植物成長量、リターフォール量の測定を行った。また、生態系からの炭素損失である土壌呼吸および従属栄養生物呼吸についても測定を継続した。従属栄養生物呼吸については、散布後4年目までのデータをまとめて著名な国際誌に投稿したが掲載には至らなかったため、現在補足データを加えるなどして改訂をすすめ、別の国際誌に投稿予定である。また、本年度は特に細根バイオマスおよび生産量について、それぞれコアサンプリング法およびルートメッシュ法を用いて推定した。しかし対照区とバイオチャー散布区との間で、樹木および林床ササの細根バイオマスや生産量に有意差は見られなかった。これは、散布からすでに6年が経過しており、バイオチャーによる影響が弱まっている可能性もあると考えられた。 一昨年度に新規に開始した小区画でのバイオチャー散布実験において、スキャナ法による細根動態解析を継続した。昨年度得られていたデータを再検討したところ、昨年度はスキャナ法に用いるアクリルボックス埋設による土壌攪乱の影響が残っていたと考えられた。したがって、細根動態解析には散布後1年が経過した今年度以降のデータを用いることが適切だと判断した。スキャナ画像の解析の結果、バイオチャーの散布によって細根生産率に顕著な変化は見られなかったが、バイオチャー散布区でやや生産率が低下する傾向が見られた。また、根画像において新規伸長した部分と枯死した部分を識別し、その面積変化をもとにターンオーバー率を算出したところ、バイオチャーを散布した区画ではターンオーバーがやや低下するという結果が見られた。
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kobe University, Apr. 2020 - Mar. 2023, Principal investigator北極モスツンドラ湿原の凍土融解・流出過程における有機炭素の分子種別変動機構の解明本研究は、高緯度北極地域に分布する高密度炭素生態系であるモスー ツンドラ湿原に蓄蔵されている炭素の凍土融解や海洋への流出過程における量的・質的変動を解析する研究である。研究対象地はノルウェー・スバールバル諸島・ニーオルスン・ステュファレット湿原であるが、COVID-19の影響により現地での想定深度の永久凍土採取が実施できなかったため、代表者の研究室に保有していた試料を用いて、凍結融解サイクル実験を実施した。 活動層(0-20 cm:上部、中部、下部)と凍土表層(20-56 cmの3 cmごと)の融解水試料について、TOC計、3D-EEM、SPR-W5-WATERGATEパルス-1H NMRなどの分析に供した。各種光学的指標データや3D-EEM解析の結果からは活動層中部の溶存有機炭素(DOC)特性は同上部とは大きく異なるが、同下部や凍土表層では類似した特性を示した。また、1H NMR分析の結果からは活動層中部は同上部と類似していたが、下部および凍土表層とは大きく異なる特性が示された。これは3D-EEMなどの汎用法だけでDOCを評価することの問題を示唆している。また、活動層下部から凍土表層にかけてのDOC特性の大きな違いは認められないことが明らかになった。 次いで、融解後の凍土を再凍結する操作を繰り返す、凍結融解サイクル実験を行った。その結果、活動層上部は他層に比べてサイクル操作による量的・質的な影響を受けすい脆弱なDOC特性を持つことが明らかになった。それ以外の層のDOCは難溶解性成分割合の高いことが示された。これらの結果を踏まえ、温暖化現象による凍土層融解の促進に伴って溶出する可能性のあるDOC特性を考慮した上で、北極湿原における炭素フローを解析する必要性が求められ、調査対象地における定量的データや、より深い凍土層試料を用いた解析情報の補填の必要性が認められた。
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 01 Apr. 2018 - 31 Mar. 2021Effect of biochar amendment to structure and function of soil organic lager in forest ecosystemAddition of biochar to forest floor have been focused as an effective strategy for controlling global warming. This study evaluated the effect of boichar amendment to structure and function of soil organic layer (litter layer) in a temperate deciduous forest. In our study, biochar largely changed the physical, chemical and biological structure of litter layer, and increased the leaf litter decomposition. This result indicates that amount of added biochar carbon was canceled by increased carbon emission with leaf litter decomposition. In addition, the released nutrients with the decomposition increased the net primary production of dominated trees. Therefore, biochar was largely effect the carbon balance of ecosystem, and then the dynamics of soil organic layer was important factor for carbon sequestration on the forest ecosystem.

The effects of the fire treatment, herbaceous and fungal fauna studies, and soil studies were conducted in a Kayaba, located in Otari village, in Nagano prefecture. The vegetation structure and its biomass differed greatly from place to place, and the differences in soil quality have led to differences in the vegetation. In addition, this study revealed that it has an impact on the quality of the thatch. It was also found that the presence or absence of burning has a significant impact on the quality of thatch and that special fungi exist on thatched roofs. This study highlights that the biota, quantity and quality of thatch production in the thatch field were strongly influenced by human management, such as burning and harvesting.

Changes in the mineralization of native SOC, i.e., priming effect” (PE) may strongly affect the temperature sensitivity of SOC turnover in the presence of global warming. We investigated the temperature sensitivity of SOC in a Japanese volcanic ash soil considering PE phenomenon. We found that soil-originated CO2 emission clearly increased with increasing temperature on the assumption that the temperature and substrate supply increase at the same time. These results suggest that not only the temperature increase but also the labile carbon supply may be important for the temperature sensitivity of Japanese volcanic ash soil.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), University of Tsukuba, 01 Apr. 2015 - 31 Mar. 2019Mechanisms of warming promote organic matter decomposition in the Qinghai Tibetan PlateauTo understand mechanisms underlying warming promotion of organic matter decomposition in alpine ecosystem, CO2 emission from soil surface and soil organic matter (SOM) properties were investigated in an alpine grassland at four altitudes from 3600 to 4200 m along a slope on the northwestern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau The CO2 emission rate was lower at the higher altitudes than that of lower altitude sites. Meanwhile, CO2 efflux sensitivity to temperature expressed as Q10 value, showed no clear trend. As for SOM properties, amounts of combined-form humic acids obtained by HCl pretreatment were remarkably higher than those extracted with Na4P2O7, indicating that the combined form of humic acids is mainly Ca. Therefore, the formation of the organo-mineral complex may contribute to stabilizing SOM in the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau. These unique features of SOM may be attributed to large range of temperature change in such the alpine ecosystems.

The biochar addition increased carbon absorption with plant photosynthesis, although it slightly increased carbon emission with decomposition of soil organic matter. However, amount of added carbon as biochar was larger than that of the incraseing carbon emission with decomposition. It suggests that the biochar is effective material for carbon sequestration in the forest ecosystems.

Immature soil in such the High Arctic showed nitrification. Relevant information utilizable for future study was derived, for example, a chronosequence is difficult to be applied such a glacier foreland due to perturbation by melting water and debris, and an open top chamber showed a passive warming effect with an 0.5 deg C increase in the mean soil temperature. Furthermore, talus soils under bird cliffs showed very high nitrification and denitrification potentials with positive temperature responses and in-situ nitrous oxide emissions.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Gifu University, 01 Apr. 2015 - 31 Mar. 2018Dynamics of soil organic carbon in a mangrove forest on an estuary of Trat River, eastern ThailandTo estimate soil organic carbon (SOC) storage and dynamics in mangrove forests of Trat River in eastern Thailand, we inventoried SOC pools in 0- 3.5 m soil profiles and daily changes of DIC (dissolved inorganic carbon) and δ13C-DIC in the water of Trat River. SOC pools in the mangroves were ranged from 926 to 1041 Mg C / ha, which have more than 5 times carbon compared to plant biomass. The relative contribution of mangrove-derived DIC in the water reached up to 15%, based on the isotopic mass balance model. CO2 efflux from the soil surface by the decomposition of SOC should have low compared to upland forests under submerged soil in mangroves, however, our results suggested that DIC makes a significant contribution to the total carbon export from mangrove ecosystems.

We made a protocol of FT-ICR MS analysis, which consists from (1) how to get water samples in field, (2) pretreatment of samples, (3) spectra analysis, (4) extraction of molecule peak, (5) extraction of common molecule. We applied the protocol to clarify the changes in water quality in Finland and Japan. In Finland, the changes in DOM according to the water cycling in a Norway spruce forest was clarified by this method. In Japan, the difference of throughfall depending on the different forest types was clarified with this method.

The area of major vegetation types in the study area (Brogger Peninsula, Svalbard) was quantified by analyzing a satellite image. Field studies were conducted mainly in peatlands for which data of carbon cycle were scarce. Apparent rates of C accumulation in a peatland, estimated based on the 14C age and amount of peat in the active layer, were calculated to be 9.0-19.2 gC m-2 yr-1. The measurements of CO2 fluxes and model analyses revealed that the peatland was an active place of carbon sequestration. The analysis of DOC in the stream water showed that a significant proportion of the fixed C was lost from the peatland. Based on these results, we evaluated the whole carbon dynamics in the study area and constructed a prediction model.

Watersheds of the tributary are strongly affected by large scale reclamation of the land for mining and agriculture.However, there is no report about fatal pollutions in the lake Baikal, indicating that natural cleaning systems should be addressed for removal of pollutants. In this study, suspended solids (SS) are mainly focused as a carrier of pollutants to elucidate the mechanism of SS removal in the river system. As a result, some heavy metals attached onto SS increase their concentration in the downstream of a mining area, indicating contamination process due to drainage from mining. Sedimentation of SS particles was observed in the downstream of a confluence point with a tributary. At the Selenge delta, the river flow spread into many small tributaries, resulting that decrease in flow rate leaded sedimentation of SS particles accompanied by accumulation of heavy metals in the bottom sediment.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Exploratory Research, Gifu University, 01 Apr. 2012 - 31 Mar. 2015Soil organic carbon pools and dynamics in a mangrove forestTo reveal the dynamics of soil organic matter, we conducted the study of ecosystem ecology and soil organic chemistry in a mangrove forest on an estuary of the Fukido River, Ishigaki Island, southern Japan. Almost aboveground fine litter flowed away from the mangrove forest due to the ebb tide, but belowground fine litter (necromass of fine root) was higher in the deep soil. Heterotrophic respiration is rather high because of CO2 fluxes from water surface at high tide and CWD decomposition at low tide. Concentrations of humic substances (HS) in the headwaters of Fukido River are higher than other river water, and HS was absorbed by mangrove soil due to high salinity. These data suggested that high fine root production/decomposition and DOC (HS) input from terrestrial evergreen forest through the river is important for soil accumulation in mangrove forests.

In this study, we conducted to collect fulvic acid in Lake Biwa, and to clarify its chemical properties as a representative of recalcitrant DOM. Furthermore, we examined growth inhibition test of green alga Chlamydomonas, which is one of ecological impact test of chemical substances. The results of the algae growth inhibition test using Chlamydomonas, the inhibition effect was not observed on the fulvic acid of Lake Biwa. We concluded that the fulvic acid under existing concentration present concentration in the lake was no inhibition effect for aquatic organisms, suggested by the present study and crustaceans and fish inhibition tests in another researches.

Photosynthesis has come to be considered as the only process in CO_2 gas uptake to the terrestrial ecosystem. Here we have, however, discovered that Basidiomycetes(mushroom) fruiting bodies, which have no photosynthetic capabilities, selectively absorb CO_2 gas. We demonstrated that the CO_2 gas uptook abilities of L. edodes. This discovery not only compels us to re-examine the carbon balance, but also may indicate the possible existence of CO_2 fixation systems other than those involving photosynthetic organisms.Competitive research funding

By the successive method based on resin adsorption, it found out that the DOM could classify to hydrophilic DOM and hydrophobic DOM, and the latter further to DOM of strong hydrophobic and weak hydrophobic. The usefulness of this facilitated technique was proved through actual analysis of DOM in some of the soils and the lake waters.Competitive research funding

- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Tokyo Institute of Technology, 2005 - 2006Process of formation, development and extinction of sclerotium grains from 14 C dating of sclerotium grain and humic acidSclerotium grains, the resting structure of an ectomycorrhizal fungus, Cenococcum geophilum, were examined in this study to clarify the processes of formation, development and extinguishment of sclerotium grains in forest soils. AMS C<14> and δC^<13> were examined for sclerotium grains together with humic acids to, elucidate the characteristics of these grains distributed in forest soils. The C^<14> age of the grains remaining in surface A horizon was obtained as>ca 3, 000 years. The ages of humic acids extracts, including humic acid Pg, were slightly younger than sclerotium grains. The δC^<13> values for sclerotium grains in surface A horizons were smaller than those of humic acids and soils. As there was no relation with grain size and C^<14> ages, it was considered that the grains so called dead sclerotium do not develop their volume in soil. The carbon content of the grain had a tendency to decrease along with an increase of C^<14> ages, although carbon content of humic acid was constant against age. The C^<14> ages of sclerotium grains indicate the individual age of grain formation, while those of humic acid indicate the mean residue age of heterogeneous organic substances. The mean concentrations of major elements in sclerotium grains were quantitatively defined as C (47.6%), O (30.2%), H (3.32%), Al (1.4%), N (0.78%), and carbon in sclerotium grains took the form of large amounts of O-alkyl C, and was also associated with aromatic C and methyl C, which strongly showed a characteristically biological origin and completely different spectral features to humic acids from an allophonic Andosol. Therefore the low δC^<13> values for sclerotium grains are presumably originated by characteristically biological organics. Microbial analysis performed higher diversity of bacteria communities compared with soil environment. The AMS C^<14> age values obtained for sclerotium grains proved its stability and long life as a shelter for microorganisms, and preserve their diversity under a severe environment. Probably, microorganisms inside the grains are responsible for the extinguishment of the grain in terms of decreasing the content of carbon inside the grain. Although the findings we have are still very limited, the goal of the study is to understand further implications of sclerotium formation in a soil ecosystem, which will help us to learn what strategy is necessary for biota to survive a catastrophe.

The objective of this study was to propose the visual and actual models of humic substances for enlightening their importance. Humic substances were analyzed from point of view of diversity and poly-dispersed properties. Results were described as follow: 1) A number of samples that were generated from various sources materials and/or different environmental condition were obtained, and the database were constructed from analytical data of carefully screened samples (83 from soils, 75 from rivers and lakes, 13 from soil solution, and 11 from manure etc.), by using NMR analysis, elemental analysis and HPSEC analysis. 2) Among soil humic acids from A horizons, their chemical properties differ among soil types. Among rivers and lakes humic substances, their chemical properties differ from colored water to clear water. For water-soluble humic substances in soils, their chemical properties were similar among samples from 0 horizons while were different among samples from A horizons. 3) The grouping model for humic substances was accomplished by the database as described above 1), and visual image of each group of humic substances were proposed on the basis of the grouping model. 4) On the basis of the grouping model for humic substances, typical humic acids from four types were selected and divided to 64 fractions by sequential extraction techniques and preparative HPSEC technique. As a results, the fraction samples reduced the poly-dispersed properties of humic substances were obtained. It was shown by the analytical data that changes of chemical properties with changes of their molecular sizes in each humic acid. 5) After taking every factor into consideration, the visual image comprehended diversity and poly-dispersed properties of humic substances were proposed.Competitive research funding

The potential importance of coastal systems in global and regional organic budgets is still unclear because of the inherent complexity and variability of rivers, estuaries and coastal zones. Therefore, it is important to understand the organic matter cycling in estuaries and coastal systems, especially characteristics and dynamics of river DOM and POM. But the DOM and POM is not homogeneous in terms of size or chemical characteristics so that we can't evaluate the linkage of terrestrial and coastal environments. The objective of this study is to understand the transport behavior of dissolved and particulate organic matter from terrestrial region to ocean. This study used carbon isotopic ratios (Δ^<14>C and δ^<13>C values) as tracers of organic carbon because the simultaneous use of these values adds a second dimension to isotopic studies of carbon cycling in surface aquatic environments. Refractory organic materials, humic substances, were isolated from the river waters in Scotland, Ukraine, Japan and Indonesia by the XAD extraction. The Δ^<14>C values of dissolved humic substances ranged from -316‰ to +209‰, indicating spatial and temporal distribution. To understand transport of POM in river systems, we selected three river systems (Tokachi, Ishikari and Kuji River systems) with different watershed conditions and carried out the observation at a fixed point in each river. The Δ^<14>C values range from -111 to -286‰ for the Tokachi River in northeast Hokkaido, -103〜-364‰ for the Ishikari River in southeast Hokkaido and -18.7〜-94.4‰ for the Kuji River in Kanto area in Japan. The paired Δ^<14>C vs. δ^<13>C distributions vary with rivers and seasons. These results suggest that the difference in paired Δ^<14>C vs. δ^<13>C distributions may reflect the water discharge and watershed environments.

- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 基盤研究(C), 佐賀大学, 2003 - 2003腐植物質による環境の制御と修復腐植物質は地球表層にに広く分布する難分解性有機高分子化合物であり、水圏および土壌圏における重要な環境制御因子である。生物遺体に由来し、化石燃料の前駆物質であると推定されでおり、有機態炭素としての存在量は、化石燃料に匹敵すると考えられている。しかしながら、腐植物質は多くの起源物質より無目的に生成することから、その生成・分解のメカニズム、および、詳細な構造や環境における挙動については全く不明であり、その機能を十分に活用するには至っていない。今回、集中的に腐植物質研究を行うことを目的として特定研究を立ち上げることを企画した。合計4回の会議(8月18日(札幌)、9月17日(神戸)、11月8日(京都)、および11月15日(佐賀))の後、平成16年度発足特定領域申請書(「腐植物質による環境の制御と修復」)を作成した。研究課題は、1)腐植物質の集積・分解過程の解明、2)腐植物質の養分供給の解明、3)腐植物質と環境汚染物質の動態、4)腐植物質の化学構造の解明とし、このために基礎から応用までの広範な分野からなる研究グループを構成した。 この研究母体は日本腐植物質学会であるが、本年度は、日本腐植物質学会第19回講演会(11月14,15日、佐賀)以外に、以下に示すシンポジウムを開催した。1)日本土壌肥料学会・陸域生態環境での土壌有機物成分の役割とその機能(8月22日、神奈川)、2)コロイドおよび界面化学討論会・土ー水環境における物質動態の基礎としてのコロイド界面(9月8日、徳島),3)日本水環境学会・日本腐植物質学会合同シンポジウム(9月18日、神戸)。いずれも、極めて活発かつ有益な討論がなされ、日本腐植物質学会の高い活性が明らかとなった。なお、学会誌刊行のための準備を平成15年度に開始した。
- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 萌芽研究, 神戸大学, 2002 - 2003メチル化法の利用による腐植酸の3次元構造解析本研究は,腐植酸の溶解性をメチル誘導化法によって変化させ,3次元構造の研究体系を水系ではなく有機溶媒系で確立し,新規情報を取得することを目的とした。昨年度は腐植酸メチル誘導化法の確立とHPSEC分析に基づく腐植分子構造のユニット仮説(腐植酸分子には会合体形成の基本ユニットが存在し、水系では水素結合による会合体形成で見かけの分子量が大きくなる)を見出した。本年度はこのユニット説を裏付け,さらに詳細な情報を得るために,以下の研究を実施した。 (1)分取HPSEC法による腐植酸の分子サイズ別画分の調製法の確立:腐植酸の水系HPSECによる分取分画法について検討し、適切な溶媒、試料濃度等を最適化した。本法で分子サイズの異なる分画試料が極めて容易に得られることが判明し、腐植酸のHPSEC分取分画法の最適化の題で投稿準備中である。( (2)分子サイズ別腐植酸画分のメチル誘導体の解析:(1)で得た分子サイズの異なる分画試料のメチル誘導体を作製、非水系HPSEC分析に供した。その結果、80K、13K、6K画分の各メチル誘導体の分子サイズピークはほぼ同じ値(Mp2.3K)を示し、3K画分のみがMp1.4Kと大きく異なっていた。このことから腐植酸は少なくとも2つの分子サイズユニットで構成されることが見出された。腐植酸の2つの基本ユニットの題で(3)の成果とあわせて投稿準備中である。 (3)フルボ酸とそのメチル誘導体の解析:腐植酸と同様の解析法で比較的低分子のフルボ酸についても検証した。その結果、フルボ酸はMp1.4Kのユニットで構成されること、しかも腐植酸の3K 画分誘導体と一致することが判明したため、腐植酸は大きなユニットとフルボ酸に共通するユニットで成立している仮説を見出した。「2つのユニット」説を立証するためには、今後、腐植酸分画試料の誘導体を分取して構造解析する必要がある。
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kyoto Prefectural University, 2001 - 2002Preparation of aquatic fulvic acid standard sample and preparation of those guarantee data"Humic substances" which exist in natural water are high molecular compounds chemically synthesized from degradation products of the plankton remains and organisms. Recently, the environmental pollution by hazardous organic compounds has been indicated. In aqueous environment, these noxious organic substances adsorb, distribute and are solubilized to the humic substances. It is important to examine the interaction between noxious organic substance and humic substances in order to study the dynamics of noxious organic substance in the environment. However, it is known that chemical property of humic substances in aqueous environment completely differ from all purchased humic substances, since it was extracted from the peat. As a representative aqueous environmental sample of Japan, Lake Biwa lake water was chosen, and aquatic fulvic acid standard sample was prepared at Kita-Komatsu lake shore station of the environmental standard point of Lake Biwa. The automatic concentration system for aquatic humic substances which consisted of giant column (φ50 cm, 20 Kg of DAX-8 resin), 3 kind connection filter columns (10,1.0,0.45μm), acid mixing column, and diaphragm pump was constructed. The pH of lake water was prepared under 2 with the automatic injection of hydrochloric acid into the filtered lake water. The humic substances were adsorbed on DAX-8 resin column by the elution of the lake water. We dealt with the lake water of about 300 tons in the period from middle October to early November 2001 and in the period from middle April to early May 2002. DAX8 resin which adsorbed the humic substances was brought back in the laboratory, the alkaline elution was done, the humic substance was recovered, and the fulvic acid was separated from humic acid as pH 1.2. By repeating and dissolving process which adsorbed to the small column again, the fulvic acid was refined, and Lake Biwa fulvic acid standard sample (2001 Autumn sample about 18 g, 2002 Spring sample : about 15 g) was obtained. Elemental analysis, functional group analysis (carboxyl group, phenolic group, carbonyl group, total hydroxyl group), ^<13>C-NMR and ^1H-NMR measurements, acid-base titration, molecular weight distribution measurement (HP-SEC), thermal decomposition mass spectrometric analysis, fluorescence analysis were carried out on the aquatic standard samples.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Tokyo Institute of Technology, 1998 - 2000Chronological sequence of humic acid Pg and its validity as environmental indicatorThe following four subjects were promoted in this project to evaluate the validity of hurmic acid Pg as an environmental indicator. 1) Morphological feature and chemical composition of sclerotia grains, the origin of Pg 2) Factors regulating the distribution of Pg fraction in surface soils 3) Chronological sequence of humic acid Pg in tephric and loessic paleosols 4) Difference of the composition of humic acid Pg in various humic acids Aluminum concentration was significantly recognized in the collected sclerotia grains, which are the origin of Pg, and the its development revealed to be regulated by the amount of exchangeable aluminum in soils. Moreover, it was clarified that the strength of Pg absorption in surface soils was regulated by the amount of exchangeable aluminum in soils. Based on these findings, it is suggested that Pg formation is promoted under leaching process in soil, or under cool and wet condition. According to the results obtained by examining the chronological sequence of tephra and loess paleosol in Japan and Germany, Pg revealed to remain in the buried humic layers aged 140-150 ka and showed a strong Pg absorption strength in buried tephra and loess paleosols aged 50-60 ka. The fluctuation of Pg, named as Pg signal/had a tendency to correspond to the fluctuation curve of past temperature obtained by MIOS. The study on composition of humic acid Pg using HPLC performed to separate Pg (humic acid green fraction) into 10 fractions by HPLC. The identification of Pg fraction formed in different environment can be discussed in-further studies.
- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 奨励研究(A), 神戸大学, 1998 - 1999土壌アントラキノンの錯体形成能-生理作用-分布特異性の因果関係土壌の特定部位に多量集積する微生物由来のアントラキノン「クリソタルニン」の分布特異性と,同化合物とアルミニウムの錯体形成による植物のアルミニウム障害軽減作用との因果関係を解明し,土壌-植物-微生物の相互作用を土壌の有機化合物の観点から見たモデルケースとして提唱することを目的に研究を実施し,2年間の研究期間を通じて以下の成果を得た。はじめに,クリソタルニンのアルミニウム錯体形成能の評価を行った。その結果,pH2.0〜2.5の範囲で同錯体の形成されやすいことが判明し,27Al-NMR測定によって,錯体中には4配位と6配位のアルミニウムが混在することがわかった。また,連続変化法によって,錯体における両者の混在比は7対3であることが判明した。以上の結果から,クリソタルニン-アルミニウム錯体は単純な規則構造物ではなく,複雑な高分子錯体であることがわかった。次いで,バイオアッセイを通じてクリソタルニンによる植物のアルミニウム障害軽減作用を検定した結果,アルミニウム障害(幼植物の根伸長阻害)はクリソタルニンの存在によって軽減されることが明らかになった。従って,アルミニウムイオンはクリソタルニンとの高分子錯体へと変化し,根吸収されにくくなるためにアルミニウム障害が軽減されると予想された。さらに,土壌断面内でのクリソタルニンおよびそのアルミニウム錯体の垂直分布を詳細に検討した結果,吸収根が密に分布する場所ではクリソタルニン総量が多く,同時に,それらの中では結合型(錯体型)割合の高いことが推定された。以上の結果から,アルミニウム障害を受けやすい吸収根の根圏において微生物がクリソタルニンを産出し,それによってアルミニウムイオンが根吸収されにくい状態になること,すなわち,植物-微生物間で何らかの共生システムが存在することが予想された。
- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 奨励研究(A), 神戸大学, 1995 - 1995誘導化処理の利用による土壌腐植酸誘導体の分離・分画法の開発とその化学構造解析腐植酸は、アルカリ溶液やごく一部の有機溶媒(DMSOやDMF)を除いた一般溶媒には不溶性であり、このことは腐植酸の分離・分画(精製)操作を制限し、化学構造解析をおこなう上での大きな障害となっている。そこで、本研究では腐植酸を予め誘導化(めちる化)処理し、溶解性等の性状を変化させた腐植酸(腐植酸誘導体)を作成し、その分離・分画法について検討した。 はじめに、4種類の腐植酸試料(P型、Rp型と2つのA型腐植酸)を用意し、ジアゾメタンによる部分メチル化処理、箱守法による完全メチル化処理を行い、得られた誘導化物の有機溶媒に対する溶解性について検討した。その結果、部分メチル化処理ではP型、Rp型腐植酸の誘導化物がクロロホルム-メタノール混液に可溶となるが、2つのA型腐植酸ではその効果が認められないこと、また、完全メチル処理ではP型、Rp型腐植酸は箱守法1回の処理でクロロホルム可溶となるが、2つのA型腐植酸では箱守法を2回繰り返し処理することではじめてクロロホルム可溶となることがわかった。従って、いずれの腐植酸もクロロホルム可溶とするためには箱守法を2回繰り返し処理する操作が必要であり、以後この操作で得られた腐植酸誘導体を試料として各種クロマトグラフィーに供した。分離分画法の検討の結果、シリカゲル、C_<18>逆相シリカゲル、ポリビニルアルコール系樹脂の担体をもちいた場合に有機溶媒系による分離分画操作が可能であることを見出した。また、以上の操作で得られた各画分について、これを分取してNMRに供試したところ、供試試料量が不十分なために詳細な構造情報を引き出すには至らなかったが、従来の腐植酸のスペクトルよりもはるかに多くの情報抽出が気体され、誘導化(メチル化)処理による腐植酸研究の妥当性が見出された。
- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 奨励研究(A), 神戸大学, 1993 - 1993土壌中の各種キノン系色素の分布特性とその支配要因に関する研究土壌中に存在するキノン系色素(アンスラキノン誘導体およびペリレンキノン誘導体)の分布は、土壌中の他の有機化合物の分布様式と異なることが指摘されている。しかし、各キノン系化合物の分布様式に規則性があるのか、規則性を支配する要因は何であるのかについては不明である。そこで、以下の研究を計画・実施したので得られた成果を報告する。 1.土壌で主要なアンスラキノン誘導体およびペリレンキノン誘導体の定量法の開発 まずはじめに定量法の開発を試みた。その結果、土壌のクロロホルム抽出液をTLCに供し、2ステップ展開法で展開した後にデンシトメトリーで分析することで、6種類のアンスラキノン誘導体が同時定量可能となることを見出した。この方法は極めて簡便で、かつ、広範囲な検出域をもつ画期的な方法であった。(この結果は現在投稿中)-方、ペリレンキノン誘導体については腐植抽出液をゲル担体を用いた遠心法で分画し低分子画分をジアゾメタンで処理した後に箱守法で完全メチル化を行い、これをFPLCに供することで初めて定量が可能となった。(この結果については現在投稿準備中) 2.土壌中のキノン系色素の分布特性の解明 1.で開発したアンスラキノン誘導体の定量法を用いて、黒色土20地点、褐色森林土18地点の表層土壌の試料についてアンスラキノン誘導体の分布特性を調べたが、規則性は見られなかった。しかしながら、土壌断面内の垂直分布をみると、6種の化合物が表層集積型と次表層集積型の2つのタイプに大別できることを見出した。(この結果は現在投稿中)-方、ペリレンキノン誘導体についてはアンスラキノン誘導体の定量法とくらべて多段階の操作が必要なため、処理したサンプル数が少なく現在データを構築中である。
