• Broad‐Salinity Osmotic Energy Harvesting From Composition Tuned Laminar Membranes

  ABSTRACT Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is a promising pathway for blue energy generation from salinity gradients, yet its efficiency hinges on ion‐exchange membranes that perform across widely varying environmental ionic strengths. In realistic high‐salinity sources, large concentration fluctuations strongly influence ion transport and degrade energy output, posing a major challenge for membrane optimization under broad‐salinity conditions. Here, we present a composition‐tunable laminar composite membrane strategy that sustains high osmotic energy harvesting across diverse concentration regimes by adjusting the ratio between Ti ₃ C ₂ T _x and 1,4‐phenylenediamine‐2‐sulfonic acid (DAS). Modulating the DAS fraction simultaneously regulates interlayer channel size and fixed charge density, systematically correlated with RED performance across varying concentrations spanning 0.05 to 5  m . We discovered that low DAS content membranes form narrower, highly selective channels optimal for high‐salinity environments, whereas high DAS content membranes feature enlarged channels favoring low‐salinity environments. Across all salinity regimes, membrane resistance emerges as the dominant factor governing energy output and is minimized through electrostatic control (via charge density) at high salinity and steric control (via free spacing) at low salinity. This composition‐modulated strategy establishes a link between membrane formulation, nanochannel structure, and device‐level performance, offering a versatile pathway for designing RED membranes capable of efficient broad‐salinity operation.

• Ionic crosslinking‐induced nanochannels with fast proton‐selective conduction in flow battery membrane

  Abstract Charge‐governed ion transport is a critical mechanism in various industries, particularly in energy conversion and storage applications. Drawing inspiration from this, a novel ion‐conductive membrane (ICM) was developed through ionic crosslinking of sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) (SPEEK) and polybenzimidazole (PBI) to fully harness ionic‐charge effects for enhanced performance in vanadium redox flow batteries. The ionic crosslinking induces nanophase separation, leading to the aggregation of ion pathways with ionic‐charge effects, which significantly enhances proton/vanadium ion selectivity and facilitates efficient proton transport (36.5 mS·cm ⁻¹ ) via the Grotthuss mechanism. The optimized ICM demonstrates simultaneous improvements in battery performance with enhanced energy efficiency (EE: 91.1%–82.8% at 40–200 mA·cm ⁻² ), while exhibiting excellent long‐term stability for 1000 cycles over 500 h (EE: 78.9% at 120 mA·cm ⁻² ). This study highlights the potential of ionic crosslinking‐induced angstrom‐scale channels with tailored functionalities, thereby advancing the applications of ICMs in rapid energy conversion, energy storage devices, and beyond.

• Bioinspired membrane with Angstrom‐scale channels: A versatile nanofluidic platform for efficient single‐ion sieving

  Abstract Bioinspired ion‐selective transport with high precision has long been a key pursuit in artificial membrane engineering and process industries. However, developing angstrom‐scale ion channels remains a significant challenge due to the difficulty of precisely controlling the internal structure and chemical microenvironment of pore channels. Herein, we present a biomimetic membrane fabricated by sub‐nanoconfining fully crosslinked ammonium‐functionalized crown ethers (diaminobenzo‐15‐crown‐5‐ether, DAB15C5) within the pore channels of a polyamide (PA) nanofilm via surface polymerization for electromembrane desalination. The resulting DAB15C5@PA membrane exhibits a high K⁺ permeation rate of 1.83 mol·m⁻²·h⁻¹ under multi‐component conditions, along with excellent single‐ion selectivity, achieving mono/monovalent (K⁺/Li⁺) and mono/divalent (K⁺/Mg²⁺) ratios of 5.2 and 33.5, respectively. Theoretical operando analysis suggests that the preferential single‐ion K⁺ extraction/separation mechanism stems from the significant disparities in transport energy barriers among ions, synergistically governed by different extents in local dehydration, enhanced size‐exclusion effects, and preferential interaction screening.

• Ultramicroporous Tröger's Base Framework Membranes With Ionized Sub‐nanochannels for Efficient Acid/Alkali Recovery

  Abstract Membrane technology holds significant potential for the recovery of acids and alkalis from industrial wastewater systems, with ion exchange membranes (IEMs) playing a crucial role in these applications. However, conventional IEMs are limited to separating only monovalent cations or anions, presenting a significant challenge in achieving concomitant H⁺/OH⁻ permselectivity for simultaneous acid and alkali recovery. To address this issue, the charged microporous polymer framework membranes are developed, featuring rigid Tröger's Base network chains constructed through a facile sol‐gel process. The intrinsic ultramicropore confinement and quaternary ammonium‐charged functional groups provide ultrahigh size‐sieving capability and enhanced Donnan exclusion for H⁺/OH⁻ selectivity; meanwhile, the internal protoplasmic channels of the polymer frameworks serve as highways for rapid ion transfer. The resulting membrane achieves high H⁺/Fe²⁺ and OH⁻/WO₄²⁻ selectivities of 694.4 and 181.0, respectively, for concurrent acid and alkali separation in diffusion dialysis and electrodialysis processes over extended operational periods (exceeding 1600 and 600 h, respectively), while maintaining remarkable transport rates. These results outperform most literature‐reported and nearly all commercially available membranes. This study validates the novel applicability of polymer framework materials with ionized angstrom‐scale channels and versatile functionalities in high‐performance IEMs for acid/alkali resource recovery.

• “Cation‐Recognition” Effect of 2D Nanochannels in Graphene Oxide Membranes Intercalated with Ionic Liquid for High Desalination Performance

  Abstract Water and ion transport in nanochannels is crucial for membrane‐based technology in biological systems. 2D materials, especially graphene oxide (GO), the most frequently used as the starting material, are ideal building blocks for developing synthetic membranes. However, the selective exclusion of small ions while maintaining in a pressured filtration process remains a challenge for GO membranes. Herein, a novel “cation‐recognition” effect is introduced within the nanochannels of reduced GO (rGO) membranes modified by ionic liquids (IL) to enhance the desalination performance. The resulting IL‐intercalated rGO (IL‐rGO) membranes exhibit remarkable stability even under prolonged exposure to acidic and basic conditions, without damage or delamination and maintain approximately ultrahigh water permeance (≈32.0 L m⁻² h⁻¹ bar⁻¹) and high Na₂SO₄ rejection. The density functional theory calculations revealed that IL‐rGO nanochannels exhibited different exclusion effects on cations (Na⁺ and /or K⁺) and the attraction effect on water molecules, which led to the “cation‐recognition” effect. Overall, this work provides a theoretical framework in sub‐nanochannels for developing advanced 2D nanochannels to address the critical challenge of freshwater scarcity.

  Abstract In nature, efficient and selective ion transport is facilitated by ion‐conductive channels in cell membranes; these channels reveal an architectural design with specialized functionality. Drawing inspiration from this, mechanistic insights into the angstrom‐scale‐channel membrane composed of ionic‐crosslinked polybenzimidazole and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone), exhibiting functional differentiation and efficient ion‐sieving properties are presented. Nanochannels allow for strong hydrogen‐bonding interactions with hydrated ions of higher polarity, while rendering significant electrostatic charge effects that impede the transition of multivalent ions by compressing effective passageways. Both hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions synergistically result in high selectivity for monovalent ions over multivalent ions because the latter requires overcoming higher energy barriers for transport compared with the former, thereby causing varying extents of ion dehydration within the nanochannels. The resulting membrane achieves a high monovalent ion permeation rate of 1.35 mol m⁻² h⁻¹ with a high mono/multivalent ion selectivity of 56.5 for K⁺/Mg²⁺ and 286 for K⁺/Al³⁺.

• Hydrogen Bonding and Electrostatic Interaction-induced Nanochannels Enabling Fast Monovalent Ion Transport for Efficient Electrodialysis

  Abstract

  Efficient and selective ion transport in nature is primarily facilitated by ion-conductive biological channels in cell membranes. These channels reveal an architectural design with specialized functionality. Drawing inspiration from this, our study focused on developing a monovalent ion transport membrane through interchain interactions between polybenzimidazole and sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) to form angstrom-scale confined nanochannels. The nanochannels exhibit pronounced hydrogen-bonding interactions with hydrated multivalent ions, while rendering significant charge effects that impede their transition by compressing the effective passageways. Both hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction synergistically result in high selectivity of monovalent ions over multivalent ions, as the latter necessitates overcoming higher energy barriers compared to the former for transport through the nanochannels. The resulting membrane achieved high monovalent ion permeation rates of 1.35 mol·m⁻²·h⁻¹ with high mono/multivalent ion selectivity for K⁺/Mg²⁺ of 56.5 and K⁺/Al³⁺ of 286. Our discoveries provide valuable strategies for developing sub-nanometer nanochannels with desired functionality that contributes to remarkably efficient ion separation via electrodialysis and beyond.
