- Similar to the demand for automated driving vehicles and autonomous mobile robots on land, marine autonomous surface ships are desired in the maritime field. An autonomous ship must be capable of recognizing objects in its vicinity and accurately determining the relative positions between the ship and objects. In this paper, we propose a novel method for creating a map of the ship’s surroundings using trinocular stereo vision, along with accurately estimating its location and motion within this map. In the proposed method, the world coordinates of feature points—such as land-based structures—are measured at the ship’s initial position. As the ship moved, these feature points in the images are tracked using optical flow. The ship’s world coordinates are then estimated based on the pixel and world coordinates of these feature points. Furthermore, the feature points in the three-dimensional map are classified using deep learning. An experiment involving ship navigation over a distance of 1000 m confirmed that the system can accurately estimate the position, heading, and speed of the ship and can also identify quay walls, other ships, and bridges in three-dimensions. - Recently, several initiatives regarding maritime autonomous surface ships (MASSs) have been implemented worldwide. One of the fundamental technologies for attaining MASSs is the recognition and localization of surrounding ships. Traditional navigational instruments are inadequate for recognizing objects, and the authors investigated the potential of stereo vision. Conventional stereo camera systems are not suitable for localizing very distant objects. One proposed solution is to use an additional camera, thus using three-camera measurements of objects at long distances to reduce positional measurement errors, incorporating time-series averaging and keypoint-based techniques. This study evaluated experimentally the accuracy of measurements using three ship-mounted cameras. The accuracy and precision of stereo measurements depend on the distance between the camera positions, referred to as the baseline length. Conventional stereo cameras are typically used to measure objects at distances of up to 200 times the baseline length. - Automatic detection of cracks using deep learning has been studied as one of the measuresto cope with the aging of concrete structures, which is a problem throughout Japan. Research is also being conducted on estimating the width of cracks to reduce the burden on inspectors. In this paper, we examine the accuracy of crack detection and width estimation for the development of an inspection support system. Specifically, we applied SegFormer, which has recently attracted attention for its effectiveness in image recognition using Transformer, to crack area detection and compared its accuracy with that of DeepLab v3+, showing that SegFormer was effective in certain areas. - The authors had proposed a linear motor driven container crane system which could realize a high speed, compact, and low maintenance crane system. In this system, the linear motor is used to control swaying motion of the spreader with the container in addition to drive trolley chassis. We proposed a novel detection method for the swaying angle of the suspended spreader with the container using an acceleration sensor attached to the linear motor driven trolley chassis.In this paper, the fundamental characteristics of the proposed swaying angle detecting method were investigated. - The significant cause of the ship collision is "Insufficient Lookout". This paper proposes an image processing method for lookout support at sea. The method detects other ships through a navigational image sequence taken by cameras installed at ship's bridge. A frame is segmented into regions. Regions that presumed to be ships are labeled. On the other hand, the optical flow of frame is estimated by Lucas-Kanade method (LKM) that is high-speed version of two-frame differential method. And the pixels that move linearly are selected by inner product. Ships regions are detected by integration with labeled regions and pixels that move linearly. - This paper proposes a novel method to easily and effectively teach a mobile robot its path and to navigate it along the instructed path. First, an operator takes pictures at some significant points such as a start point, turning left/right points and a goal point at the teaching stage. At the same time, locations of these significant points are also obtained with a GPS receiver. Then, the operator teaches the robot its path by some simple instructions based on the pictures referred as reference images. Finally, at the autonomous navigation stage, the robot travels along the path with two navigation modes. One of them is landmark-based navigation, that is, the robot recognizes its headings and the significant points by detecting the landmarks indicated in the reference images when the robot is traveling near the significant points. Another mode is GPS-based navigation. The robot is navigated to near the significant points by GPS information when the robot is far from the significant points. - Radar is essential to safety navigation for ships. However, it is not perfect equipment and there exist marine accidents. The authors propose using stereo vision that automatically detects ships and/or other objects and measures their 3D locations in order to assist usual navigation equipment. This paper focuses on a novel method to detect ships from stereo images. The proposed method is composed of detection of edges from images, confirmation of corresponding points between left and right images, and final judgment of ships from 3D measurement results. An experiment, which used twelve pairs of stereo images obtained at Akashi Strait, was conducted. In this paper, a study on the application of the wind energy conversion for the electric power generation system of a large ship was carried out.
At first, the paper considered and proposed the design procedure of the introduction of the wind energy conversion system to ships. Secondly, a case study was carried out on the wind energy generation system to a coal cargo ship using the proposed design. Finally, in order to evaluate the application of the wind energy conversion system, the fuel consumption and NOx and SOx emission were compared with those of the conventional electric power generation system consisting of diesel engine generator. The electric power generation system could reduce the fuel consumption and NOx and SOx emission from the ship. - This paper describes a method of the position measurement of ceiling fluorescent lamps that are reference points to measure vehicle positions for autonomous navigation. The principle of the present method is basically the motion stereo that makes use of the vehicle itself and has an advantage that it works even when orientation of a camera is unknown. We can also obtain the vehicle traveling routes while positions of fluorescent lamps are measured. - This paper mainly describes an orientation control scheme of a vision-based autonomous vehicle by means of fluorescent lamps on the ceiling. The long shape of a fluorescent lamp makes this control possible. First, we propose the method that discriminates a fluorescent lamp from the other light sources and gives the distance and the angle between the vehicle and the fluorescent lamp. Then, the errors of the detected distance and angle are estimated and it is found that they are small enough to control the vehicle. Lastly, experimental results of the vehicle navigation are shown. The vehicle can move along the fluorescent lamp array or in a certain direction from the fluorescent lamp array. In order to develop a highly safe maritime transportation system that made navigation safer in cooperation with the existing navigational devices, we studied the system that detected and precisely measured locations and velocities of ships and other obstacles using machine vision technology, especially, 3D image measurement technology. The establishment of the position measuring of long-distance and high precision An experimental examination was carried out about the method of decreasing the influences of the quantization error on the position measurement. Specially, speed-up could be realized by using several cameras. This method can be applied to the general position measurements, such as intelligent transport system. 2. The proposal of the navigation method of mobile robot by beams of light The precision and flexibility of the proposed navigation method that used beams of light projected from the main robot were examined, and satisfactory effect could be proved. This method has the merits that the navigation of the sub robot is stable and the structure of the sub robot is simple. Considering the running chrematistics of the sub robot, the routes of the sub robot were designed. The validity of the proposal method could be confirmed by the experiments which plural sub robots were used for. The proposal of the general-purpose carriage method by the cooperation tasks General-purpose object carriage by the cooperative tasks was tested, and it succeeded in verifying that validity. This system is thought to be able to carry the heavy desk and so on by cooperative tasks of sub robots, in order to realize the full automatic room cleaning system. The proposal of the distinction method of targets and the path teaching method The distinction method of targets and obstacles was investigated using the local visual information (color information, patterns, etc.). And the path teaching method was proposed.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kobe University of Mercantile Marine, 1998 - 2000Estimation of power output of photovoltaic power generation on a ship using visual informationFrom the point of view of energy and environmental issues, basic researches on estimation of photovoltaic (PV) power have been carried out in order to solve the problems that occur to a PV-diesel hybrid system on a ship because of irregularity of the PV power. The results include : 1.Estimation of PV power (solar irradiance) by image processing of clouds ; First, we have developed a basic method to judge weather conditions, that is "fine" or "cloudy, " in a few minutes by means of detection of clouds motion in the sky that mostly affects the PV power with machine vision. Next, a method to estimate solar irradiation over a few minutes has been considered. The method is based on analysis of the ratio of clouds that is going to cover the sun. Estimation of solar irradiation over a longer time, a few hours, has been investigated by using an all-sky camera, too. Furthermore, we have studied a basic method to discriminate between "thick" and "thin" clouds to estimate transmittance of the sunlight. 2.Estimation of PV power (solar irradiance) considering the characteristics of solar irradiance ; We have devised a method to estimate daily solar irradiation by the estimation of the atmospheric transmittance from the theoretical equation of solar irradiance and observed solar irradiance. The experiment confirmed that the method precisely estimated the daily solar irradiation on more than half days in 2000. 3.Control of the PV-diesel hybrid generation system ; A basic method to control the PV-diesel hybrid generation system using the short-time and long-time estimation of PV power mentioned above has been proposed. Future works are applied studies to combine above basic studies as a system.
