- The present chapter provides an overview of vortex dynamics in complex fluids by taking examples of Taylor vortex flow. As complex fluids, non-Newtonian fluid is taken up. The effects of these complex fluids on the dynamic behavior of vortex flow fields are discussed. When a non-Newtonian shear flow is used in Taylor vortex flow, an anomalous flow instability is observed, which also affects heat and mass transfer characteristics. Hence, the effect of shear-thinning on vortex dynamics including heat transfer is mainly referred. - Abstract A gas–liquid–solid three‐phase reaction was conducted in a Taylor flow reactor to improve the apparent reaction rate by enhancing the mass transfer rate of the gas component to the surface of the solid catalyst through the liquid. Hydrogenation of α‐methyl styrene (AMS) was the model reaction. The reactor was an aluminum tube with a length of 300 mm and an inner diameter of 4 mm. A thin alumina layer was formed on the inner wall and palladium was used as the catalyst. Hydrogen and AMS were introduced into a T‐joint installed at the upper stream of the reactor to form a gas–liquid Taylor flow. The AMS conversion obtained using the Taylor flow was higher than that obtained without the flow. To examine the effect of the hydrogen absorption promotion by the circulating flow in the AMS slug, the total flow rate of the reactants was varied whereas the length of the gas and liquid slugs was maintained. Although the absorption increased owing to the faster surface renewal, only a slight improvement was observed. Conversely, when the total flow rate was fixed and the ratio of the gas slug length to the liquid slug length was increased, the apparent reaction rate improved significantly. - 【目的】茶道における抹茶の点て方やその仕上がりには、熟練者と⾮熟練者の間に⽬に⾒えてわかる差異が存在し、熟練者は暗黙知、すなわち⼈間が無意識のうちに⻑年の経験や勘などから得た、簡単には⾔語化できない知識をもつ。本研究では、茶道流派の一つである裏千家のきめ細かい抹茶の泡立ち方に着目し、撹拌動作を分析することで、化学工学の視点から撹拌に有効な動作の抽出を試みた。 【方法】抹茶2 gを入れた内径10.5 cmの茶碗に80℃の湯70 mLを注ぎ、完全形、内穂のみ、外穂のみの3種類の茶筌を用い、熟練者(3名)と⾮熟練者(3名)に抹茶を撹拌させた。撹拌動作による泡⽴ちへの影響を調べるために被験者の肘、⼿⾸、中指の第⼆関節の3点に印をつけて、正面から動画撮影し、Dipp-Motion V(DITECT 社製 Ver.1.2.6)を用いて動作解析を⾏った。泡立ち評価は、茶碗の真上から撮った画像をImage J(v.1.53o)を用いてモノクロ二値化し、黒の部分の面積を比較し行った。 【結果・考察】熟練者は3種類の茶筌を用いて撹拌した場合、いずれにおいても泡のきめ細かさや泡立ち具合のばらつきが少なかった。一方、非熟練者は茶筌の違いによる泡立ちに大きなばらつきがみられた。動作解析の結果、熟練者は肘の変位が⾮熟練者よりも大幅に小さく、肘を軸とした撹拌を行うことがわかった。さらに、手首と中指の変動が同期し、熟練者に見られる肘の変動が逆位相の場合、細かな泡立ちとなったが、非熟練者に見られる肘の変動が手首と中指の変動と1/4周期の位相差がある場合、荒い泡立ちとなった。The Japan Society of Cookery Science, 2022, Abstracts of the Annual Meeting of the Japan Society of Cookery Science, 33, 61, Japanese

- Recently, two-dimensions (2D) nano-structured material such as nanosheet is of great interest for preparation of high surface area catalyst, self-consistent film and so forth. Although there are many studies reported about the nanosheet obtained by ultrasonic dispersion, there are few reports to clarify mechanism of ultrasonic dispersion and derive a dispersion rate equation indispensable for designing ultrasonic apparatus. In this study, FePP ethanol suspension was employed as the model layered material and it can be dispersed to nanosize by the ultrasound. The dispersion process was observed by transmittance change of the suspension. First, the transmittance showed slight change, but after 40 min it was drastically increased. Next, we defined the dispersion ratio by using membrane filter separating particles more than 220nm. By using this, the experimental result could be linearly fitted by the logistic function. Finally, the mechanism was modeled by the random split model. - The present study investigated the dispersion of floating particles in a Taylor vortex flow reactor experimentally and numerically. The working fluid was glycerin solution and had a density (ρf) of 1210 kg·m-3 and a viscosity (μ) of 0.1 Pa·s. Floating particles of an acrylic resin had a density (ρp) of 1190 kg·m-3.Two groups of particles with mean diameters of 710 and 974μm were discerned. Although particles penetrated the Taylor vortex flow region in the axial direction at different rotational Reynolds numbers, particle segregation was observed. It was confirmed that the smaller particles penetrated deeper in the axial direction. Numerical simulations were also conducted to elucidate the mechanism of particle segregation. Numerical results of a particle-tracking method indicate that the small particles moved on the outermost orbit of a torus. - Particle dispersion in a stirred vessel with dual paddle impellers was numerically investigated by a commercial CFD code. The working fluid was assumed a weak shear-thinning non-Newtonian fluid or Newtonian fluid having low viscosity (ca. 4.0 Pa · s). Particles were initially set in the lower half region in the vessel. Numerical simulations were conducted by varying rheological property, location of the impellers and discharge flow rate of impellers. Numerical results showed that the viscosity was lower near the impeller in the non-Newtonian fluid than in the Newtonian fluid due to strong shear near the forefront of impeller. Consequently, the velocity of discharge flow from impeller was larger in the non-Newtonian. Larger velocity of the discharge flow took more particles to the tank wall as compared with Newtonian fluid. The present work adopted the mean value and the standard deviation of particle concentration as particle dispersion indexes. - This special issue, "IWPI 2008," is an outcome of the International Workshop on Process Intensification 2008 held in Tokyo, Japan on October 15–18, 2008. This workshop had been organized as the second workshop on this research field in Asia and is held every two years. The main objectives of this workshop were to provide the current achievements and trends on process intensification and share the latest research results among participants. - To gain a better understanding of the dynamic behavior of continuous emulsion polymerization, the authors developed a simple stochastic model which considers the competitive interaction between polymerization reaction and aggregation of latex particles. The numerical results were then compared with the experimental data from continuous emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate carried out under various operating conditions. The numerical and experimental results showed satisfactory agreement. - The purpose of the present work is to investigate time-dependent flow properties in doubly periodic and weakly turbulent wavy vortex flows in a Taylor–Couette flow system with the aid of a wavelet analysis. Time series data of fluctuating tangential velocity were obtained with a fiberoptic laser-Doppler velocimeter. To clarify the dependence of time-fluctuation flow properties on spatial location, the velocity was measured at many positions within each vortex. In order to estimate wavelet correlation patterns, logarithmic expectation and information entropy were calculated at each time scale. The wavelet patterns revealed that the time-fluctuation properties depend not only on the spatial location but also on time. - Mixing in a continuous vibrating mixer named “VIBRO MIXER®” has been observed with the aid of a visualization technique and a tracer response technique. The mixer consists of several mixing units having a spiral impeller going up and down. It has been found that homogeneous and rapid mixing can be obtained owing to the spiral structure of the impeller and the holes opened in the impeller. On the other hand, mixing between units is inhibited by a partition plate. Owing to the coupling of these two mixing effects, the mixer is regarded as a plug-flow type mixing device. - Emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate was performed in a system of two continuous stirred tank reactors in series to observe dynamic chemical processes. Monomer and an aqueous solution of initiator and emulsifier were separately and continuously fed into the first reactor. The concentration of emulsifier was considerably lower than the critical micelle concentration. The reacting latex solution discharged from the first reactor was fed into the second reactor. The mean residence time and the speed of the rotational impeller were varied as control parameters. After a transitional period, a steady state of almost constant monomer conversion was attained. Even while this steady state was maintained, the particle-size distribution varied periodically. The mean diameter of latex particles also oscillated over time. A broader distribution was obtained in the second reactor, where, from a certain sampling time, a bimodal particle- size distribution was observed. These results indicate that the aggregation process predominates over the reaction process in the second reactor. - Periodic operation of reaction temperature was examined as a means to control latex particle size distribution in the continuous emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate. The monomer conversion attained in a time-independent steady-state operation showed a dramatic rise from 0 to over 60% at a critical reaction temperature of Tc=53°C. The dynamic operation was performed by switching the reaction temperature between two values, one of which gives a very low monomer conversion and the other a high monomer conversion in the usual steady-state operation. - Effect of inhomogeneous mixing on chemical reactions in a Taylor vortex flow reactor was experimentally investigated by using a second-order reaction system. The flow-visualization experiment by a laser induced fluorescence method was also carried out to observe the cross-sectional view of mixing behavior in the inside of Taylor vortex cells. In the reaction experiment, the reaction among hydrogen peroxide, iodide ions and hydrogen ions, i.e. 2H+ + 2I– + H2O2 → I2 + 2H2O, was used. The temporal evolution of the concentration of iodine was observed from the temporal variation of color of iodine. The flow-visualization experiment clearly revealed the existence of two different mixing zones within a Taylor vortex cell at low Reynolds numbers. Namely, the fluid flowing near the cell boundary was axially well-mixed, while the fluid element confined to the vortex core region was poorly exchanged with the outer well-mixed flow region. This vortex core region, called an isolated mixing region (IMR), decreased as increasing the Reynolds number. - The occurrence of Taylor vortices between two conical cylinders of the inner one rotating and the outer one at rest is numerically simulated by the integration of time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations of the primitive variables. The motion is initiated by a progressive acceleration following a linear path of the inner conical cylinder rotation from the state of rest until its final rotation speed. In the integrated equations, the use of a coordinate transformation permitted to point out the apex angle α in the circular coordinates system and then to study the effects of α on the transient development of the Taylor-vortex structures, the steady states and the flow field characteristics. The numerical calculations have been achieved by the use of the SMAC method applied to a finite difference scheme for the case of a finite length. As a result, the symmetry of the Taylor vortices formed with regard to the mid plane for α = 0 does not exist anymore when the apex angle α becomes greater. - The purpose of present work was to observe isolated mixing regions (IMRs) under laminar flow conditions in a Taylor-vortex-flow reactor with the aspect ratio Γ = 2. In the range less than Re = 200, the IMRs took clearly the form of two toroidal vortices, one each in the upper and lower circulating flows. A simple core torus was observed in the case of a rotating inner cylinder with smooth surface, while a set of thin tori spirally wrapping around the core of the IMR was observed in the case of an inner cylinder with surface protrusions. Different numbers of tori were obtained for different numbers of protrusions, even at nearly the same Reynolds number. Hence, it can be considered that these structures of IMR depend on periodical perturbations caused by the rotating inner cylinder with protrusions. Numerical investigation using a Lagragian procedure determined the number of perturbations, ne, during one revolution of a marker particle around the IMR. It was found that ne corresponded to the number of thin tori. - The primary purpose of this work is to construct a new method how to define the turbulent flow structures effective for heat transfer augmentation. The flow field consists of a submerged liquid jet issuing from a convergent slot nozzle and a circular cylinder for heat transfer placed perpendicular to and on the jet centerline. Two small cylinders were inserted into the jet stream to examine the effectiveness of heat transfer augmentation. Time-series data of the jet centerline velocities were analyzed by a wavelet transformation. - This paper reports time-dependent flow characteristics of a turbulent water jet impinging vertically upward upon a water-air interface. Mexican-hat wavelet transform was applied to the time-dependent velocity fluctuations obtained in the region near to the air-water interface in order to analyze spatiotemporal turbulent structure at different time scales. The further understanding of the physical meanings of the wavelet transforms was tried by the analysis using logarithmic expectation and information entropy of information theory. It has been found that the near-interface turbulent structure is constituted not only by the impingement of the large-scale structure of the approaching turbulent jet but also by the time-dependent deformation of the surface bump. - The structure of isolated mixing regions was observed in a stirred vessel with the aid of flow-visualization technique. Two toroidal regions were clearly formed respectively above and below the turbine impeller in the range less than Re = 100. Under the condition of this experiment, these regions remained visible for a couple of hours. Under the nearly same rotational condition, a set of three stable filaments surrounding the torus was found in the case of the six-bladed turbine, while a set of four filaments was found in the case of the four-bladed turbine. The velocity fluctuation of flow caused by the rotating turbine blades can be regarded as periodical perturbations for the secondary circulating flow. Hence it can be considered that these structures depend on periodical perturbations caused by the rotating turbine blades. In order to observe the inside structure of ring-doughnut-shaped core regions, the unsteady rotation procedure was applied. Another set of filaments was observed inside the core. - The purpose of thr present work is to investigate the transition from periodic to chaotic flows in Taylor vortex flow with the aid of a wavelet analysis. Time series data of fluctuating tangential velocity were obtained with a fiberoptic laser-Doppler velocimeter. To clarify the dependence of time-fluctuation flow properties on spatial location, the velocity was measured at several positions within each'vortex. In order to estimate wavelet correlation patterns, logarithmic expectation and information entropy were calculated at each time scale. The wavelet patterns revealed that the time-fluctuation properties depend not only on the spatial location but also time. - Mixing-effective motions are both numerically and experimentally studied for a very viscous fluid around a rotating elliptic cylinder installed in a cylindrical vessel. A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation was conducted in an elliptic boundary-fitted curvilinear coordinate system rotating at the same angular velocity as the elliptic cylinder. Time-dependent streamlines and streaklines were observed with the aid of visualization technique. - Machine-made paper is a typical orthogonal anisotropic material vis-a-vis conductive heat transfer, and the effective thermal conductivity may change with moisture content. Two-dimensional temperature change with time within a layer of recycled paper sheets was measured using by an unsteady heating method with fine hot wire. Repeated the measurement, three-dimensional effective thermal conductivity of the layer was obtained from a set of analytical solution for the conductive heat transfer equation of the anisotropic media. - This work is concerned with a numerical study of the laminar flow of a viscous fluid between two coaxial cones, with the inner one rotating on which a constant axial flow is imposed. The two cones have the same apex angle value, so that the gap width between them is constant. Two configurations of the same volume are studied: (i) divergent flow passage (Div) and (ii) convergent flow passage (Cov), which represents geometrically the reverse case of (i). Analysis with the aid of the boundary layer assumptions is carried out by the use of an implicit finite difference method. A coordinate transformation is applied to the governing equations in order to remove the explicit effect of the apex angle from the calculation process for both cases, so that the boundary conditions can be simplified. The swirl characteristics are studied in both configurations with regard to the same inlet flux and the same rotation speed of the inner cone. The competition between centrifugal and axially-transporting effects in both cases is discussed. - The effect of reactor volume on concentration oscillations in the cerium-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction is observed by varying mean residence time of feed as a bifurcation parameter. Three CSTRs different in volume were used in the experiment with the same stirring conditions. Chemical oscillations are investigated by measuring the redox potential between Ce3+ and Ce4+ using a Pt-wire electrode. Owing to the effect of nonlinear coupling between essential chemical oscillations and external forcing oscillations by the peristaltic pump, chaotic oscillations occur in shorter mean residence time. It has been found that this coupling effect affects the greater concentration oscillations in smaller CSTR. At the bifurcation point between single-peak oscillation and chaotic oscillation state, intermittent oscillations are observed. - The generation of vortices and transitional properties to turbulent flow in a Taylor -Couette flow system with an aspect ratio of 3 were investigated in terms of the effect of the acceleration of the inner cylinder rotation speed by using numerical, electrochemical and flow-visualization techniques. The three-dimen-sional simulation based on the SMAC method clarified the generation mechanism of vortices and temporal and spatial properties in a wavy vortex flow. The electrochemical and flow-visualization techniques revealed the temporal and spatial properties in wavy, quasi-periodic wavy and weakly turbulent wavy vortex flows. Lower acceleration rates produced the two-cell primary mode, while the four-cell secondary mode was generated in the case of higher acceleration rates. In a wavy vortex flow, the single fundamental frequencies, which correspond to the passing frequencies of the travelling azimuthal waves, velocity and velocity gradient power spectra depend on the flow modes. In quasi-periodic and weakly turbulent wavy vortex flows, the temporal-spatial properties also largely depend on the cell modes. - Bifurcation phenomena in a finite-length Taylor-Couette flow system have been observed by an electrochemical technique. The axial wavelength was varied as the characteristic parameter of vortex cell structure by varying the aspect ratio of the annular flow space and controlling the inner cylinder acceleration up to a steady rotation speed. Multi-resolution analysis in wavelets was used not only for noise reduction, but also for extraction of low frequency components from the experimental time-series data. When the dimensionless axial wavelength λ/d < 1, the first fundamental frequency f1/fr of singly periodic wavy vortex flow was fixed at a unique value independent of the magnitude of λ/d. When λ/d ≥ 1, on the other hand, f1 was not fixed uniquely but showed some variation, depending on the magnitude of λ/d. In the transition to doubly periodic wavy vortex flow, not only Hopf bifurcation but also two-cycle period doubling bifurcation occurred in some cases when λ/d < 1. The first and second fundamental frequencies, f1 and f2 have tendencies to increase with increasing λ/d in spite of some exceptions. - Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Research (Exploratory), Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Research (Exploratory), Kobe University, 30 Jul. 2020 - 31 Mar. 2023Challenge of Establishing a New Theory of Stirring and Mixing Operations by Introducing Human Motion Imitation今年度は茶道における抹茶の撹拌動作を主に調査した。抹茶の撹拌では、昨年と同様に撹拌の性能評価指標として抹茶の泡立ちをとりあげた。昨年度は抹茶の泡立てに重要となる成分のサポニンに着目したが、今年度は泡立てに重要な茶筅と熟練者の撹拌動作に着目して研究を行った。茶筅の内穂と外穂の役割を調べるために、通常の茶筅(80本立て)、外穂のみ、内穂のみの3種類で、被験者に抹茶をたててもらい、泡立ちの性状について調べた。熟練者においては、茶筅の種類による違いは顕著には表れなかったが、非熟練者の場合は、内穂のみの茶筅を使用した場合、表面の泡径は顕著に大きくなった。この傾向は、熟練者においてもみられた。これらの結果から、泡立ちのキメ細かさには外穂が重要な役割をしていることがわかった。また、均質な泡立ちのためには、外穂と内穂の相互作用が重要であることもわかった。指、手首、肘の位置の時系列データをもとにした撹拌動作解析から、すべての熟練者で、指と手首の振動の位相は一致し、肘は位相が半周期分ずれていることがわかった。非熟練者では、比較的泡立てが上手な被験者では、熟練者と近い動きが観察されたが、泡立てが上手くない被験者では肘の位相のずれが少ないことがわかった。また、熟練者に対して、抹茶を立てるときのポイントの聞き取り調査を実施し、被験者が表現した内容について、化学工学的な解釈を与える試みも行った。さらに、抹茶の撹拌にも使用されている旋回型の撹拌について、工業的に利用されている旋回型撹拌装置の流動・混合特性を調べ、学会発表を行った。
- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 基盤研究(C), 基盤研究(C), 神戸大学, 01 Apr. 2020 - 31 Mar. 2023「道場」の機能に基づく持続可能な科学コミュニケーションの場づくり近代の道場は,正式な寺院や僧侶が近くにないときに,日常的な法事や仏教行事を担う人あるいは場所となった.出家信者と在家信者の間に位置する檀家総代であるとともに,在家信者たちが集まる場所をさす.道場の一つの役割である仏教行事の挙行に着目し,行事が一般市民の科学的興味・関心に与える影響を検討した.具体的には,祭りを通じて構築される人とのつながりと防災意識との関係を調査した.祭りの運営に携わる人,祭りに行く人,行かない人について,消防団員とそうでない人たちに分けて,各々の防災意識の違いをソーシャル・キャピタルの観点から分析した.ソーシャル・キャピタルとは,社会・地域における人々の信頼関係やつながりを表す概念で,共通の目的に向けて協調行動を促し,社会の効率性や成長,持続性を高める社会的資源を意味する.アンケート調査を実施したところ,消防団員であろうとなかろうと,祭りの運営に携わる人のほうが祭りへ行くだけの人よりも,ハザードマップや避難場所・経路を理解していたり,備蓄品を準備したり,近所の要支援者を把握していたり,防災意識が高い傾向にあることが分かった.また,消防団員ではない人で祭りに行く人は,ソーシャル・キャピタルがハザードマップや避難場所・経路を理解したり,備蓄品を準備するなど,防災における自助意識に与える影響が大きいことが判明した.消防団員ではない人たちを非専門家とすると,ソーシャル・キャピタルを高めることによって,非専門家の科学的興味・関心を向上させることができることを示唆している.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Fund for the Promotion of Joint International Research (Fostering Joint International Research (B)), Fund for the Promotion of Joint International Research (Fostering Joint International Research (B)), Kobe University, Oct. 2019 - Mar. 2023Development of new vortex dynamics into complex fluid systems focusing on functional structures of vortices本研究課題では、複雑流体として、1) 非ニュートン性の強い流体、2) 高濃度分散相を有する混相流体、3) 粘弾性流体、4) 液滴流体の4つを取り上げ、それぞれの複雑流体が渦の発生、消滅、サイズ、形状、動特性の制御性にどのような影響を及ぼすのかを明らかにすることを目的とする。本研究では、「渦の動力学(Vortex Dynamics)」を固体集積、混合・反応、分級、輸送といった渦の持つ機能構造に着目し、化学工学的に体系化することを目的とする。 1) 非ニュートン性の強い流体については、テイラー渦セルを研究対象とし、流体の溶液構造に着目したマルチスケール解析を行い、非ニュートン流体系における渦の発生、消滅、動特性の数値解析を行った。Wang博士と共同で渦流動場を用いた化学プロセス開発の観点から検討した。 2) 高濃度分散相を有する混相流体については、撹拌槽の粒子集積現象に着目し、Wang博士と協働して実験的に現象の解析を進めた。また、高濃度粒子懸濁系への拡張については、粒子間の相互作用と粒子集合体の運動挙動について、北京化工大学のCai博士と共同研究を開始し、実験的研究を開始した。 3) 粘弾性流体については、マイクロ急縮小・急拡大流路の中の弾性乱流(弾性不安定性)による非定常な渦の発生について、国立台湾大学で研究を実施するための基礎データの取得を行った。 4) 液滴流体については、液滴に加える振動の周波数と振幅が液滴内混合に及ぼす影響を明らかにした。さらに、Leidenfrost現象を応用した液滴輸送制御について、Sun教授と検討した。また、Wang博士とLeidenfrost現象を利用したエネルギーシステム開発の共同研究を立ち上げた。
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Kobe University, Apr. 2018 - Mar. 2023, Principal investigator本研究では、「渦の動力学」を固体集積、混合・反応促進、粒子分級、物質輸送といった渦の持つ機能構造に着目し、化学工学的に体系化することを目的として、以下の4つの課題に取り組んでいる。 1)渦流動場の粒子集積過程の解明と放出制御能の探査では、昨年実施した2円柱非定常交互回転流動場から生じる2次元カオス混合場における微粒子分散・凝集挙動の研究を3次元混合場に拡張するために、撹拌槽内で孤立混合領域が生じる層流混合場での微粒子分散・凝集挙動について調査した。その結果、乱流混合場に比較して顕著な粒子凝集が観察された。現在、ポピュレーションバランスモデルを組み込んだCFDシミュレーションを用いて凝集挙動のメカニズム解明を試みている。 2)渦内の混合・反応特性の調査では、昨年度に引き続き、液滴振動装置を用いて、振動周波数と振幅を変化させ、液滴内の循環流動パターンと混合過程を調べた。液滴内の混合測定では、混合が完了するまでに必要な振動回数(無次元混合時間)は、振動周波数が低いほど、振幅が大きいほど、液滴内の循環流動が不安定で混合が促進することがわかった。 3)円錐型テイラー渦流を利用した粒子分級では、ヘリカル状の渦が生じる流動場において、シリカ粒子の分散状態を調査した。その結果、単純せん断場では得られない、比較的大きな凝集体粒子が生じること、得られる粒子径分布は単にブロードするのではなく、3つのピークを持つことがわかった。 4)渦の移動による剥離および、物質輸送能の調査では、オーストラリアのRMIT大学、CSIROと撹拌槽内に付着するスケールの軽減に関する共同研究を開始した。今年度は、撹拌槽に設置したバッフルにおいて、バッフルと撹拌槽壁に隙間を空けることで、その隙部を流体が通過するときに発生する渦により、撹拌槽に付着するスケール量が大幅に減少することを見出した。Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Fukui University of Technology, 01 Apr. 2017 - 31 Mar. 2020We investigated thermal characteristics about internal induction heating typed mixing system with water, 60wt% and 80wt% glycerol solution.The impeller is semi-sealed typed impeller which consists of coil and 2 sheets of mixing impeller plate. Induction heating coil is planar coil made of cupper, and mixing impeller plate is made of stainless steel of □150mm×3mmt with 4 rectangular holes. Heat transfer coefficient between this impeller and solution is calculated with equation W=hAΔT(W: heat rate, A: heat transfer area, ΔT: average temperature difference between impeller and solution). Next, h is and correlated by empirical formula and finally rearranged by the form of j factor. j-factor of induction heating mixing impeller is 2.0 more times as much as that of vessel wall. The time variation of ΔT was well approximated by a primary delay system. Its time constant is 6~25s, its value is about 1/10 times as the conventional outer heating wall type and is proportional to 1/h.

However, in the field of fine chemicals, many rapid reactions exist, and it is difficult to capture all the reaction paths unless rapid mixing in a minute area can be achieved. Although there are some reports about the reaction kinetic analysis using a microreactor which has a very narrow channel, the mixing rate is not sufficient. In this study, we applied the oscillatory flow to the feed in the microchannel with the baffle, and realized the rapid mixing in the whole channel by generating the unsteady vortex flow. Furthermore, when this reactor was applied to the cyclization of pseudoionone as a highly rapid reaction accurate reaction rate analysis could be conducted successfully.

This study observed human agitating motion conducted by five experts and two non-experts. Mixing (whipping) state of fresh cream was evaluated by an overrun which indicates the amount of gas phase and rheology of fresh cream. In the motion analysis, three observation points were set at research subjects’ elbow, wrist and whisk. Mixing behaviors were visualized by food red and recorded by a high-speed camera. The all experts accomplished to reach peak values larger than 100 of the overrun in two times shorter period than the non-experts. In the non-experts’ motions, all motions of elbow, wrist and whisk were strongly synchronized and the time series of displacement showed relatively simple periodic motions. On the other hand, in the experts' motions phase difference of motions among elbow, wrist and whisk was observed and the time-series of displacement showed rather complex and chaotic.Competitive research funding

As for energy saving and low carbonization in foods, this research paid attention to "boiling" and "steaming" which are relatively large energy consuming cooking processes. Numerical models for prediction of time variations of temperature and hardness of foodstuff were constructed and optimization of heating cooking was tried. In order to proposed a methodology for construction of a future local community which has accomplished low energy consumption and low carbon dioxide emission, this research tried to make a future image of society from the aspect of food production systems using a design thinking method. The design thinking method leaded to an important concept that "taking much time or "waiting" is crucial for the future society.Competitive research funding

As one of the current food safety issues, cooking at high temperature unintentionally produced toxic chemical materials such as acrylamides. For the reduction of intake of these materials, it would be effective to increase the rate of wet-heating methods such as“boiling, simmering, and steaming” rather than dry-heating methods such as “roasting, broiling, stir frying, and deep frying” in daily cooking, whereas cooking by the former methods might consume more energy than that by the latter methods. Therefore, we elucidated the optimal heating conditions of root vegetables for energy efficiency: boiling carrots. Furthermore, we examined the optimal frying conditions of hamburger steak for energy efficiency and CO2 reduction and preventing bacterial food poisoning, which is another important issue in food hygiene.Competitive research funding

This work tried to elucidate the mechanism of anomalous mass transport phenomena and apply these phenomena to chemical processes by focusing on the effect temporal-special perturbations. This work investigated anomalous mass transport phenomena in Taylor vortex flow and laminar flow in a stirred vessel with turbine impeller. It has been found that coherent structures in flow field and their steadiness are important factors for anomalous transport phenomena. If temporal or special perturbations are imposed a flow field with a resonant frequency with a coherent flow structure, the flow structure is stabilized and the anomalous transport is suppressed. On the other hand, perturbations breaking coherent, symmetry or steadiness structures are imposed, anomalous mass transport is dramatically enhanced. This work also proposed a novel hollow membrane separation process utilizing the above mechanism for enhancement of anomalous mass transport. This novel membrane separation process showed not only higher anti-fouling property but also higher permeability and rejection than an ordinary hollow fiber membrane separation process.Competitive research funding

In this system, the feed gas (CO_2/CH_4 mixture) and carrier solution (aqueous diethanolamine solution) are both supplied to the lumen side (feed side, high pressure side) of the hollow fiber membrane module and flow upward. The carrier or absorbent solution, which contains dissolved CO_2, permeates the membrane and to the permeate side (low pressure side, shell side), where the solution liberates dissolved gas to become a lean solution and the lean solution is recycled to the lumen of the hollow fiber. 1.Development of new hollow fiber membranes The performance of the hollow fiber membrane is one of the key factors to determine the performance of this membrane-absorption hybrid system. Thus, in this work, several new hollow fiber membranes were prepared. The poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB)/EVOH blend membrane and PVB-TiO_2, composite membrane were successfully prepared by the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). The hydrophilicity of the hollow fiber membrane is quite important to obtain the sufficient wettability of the carrier solution along the membrane wall. Therefore, the new hollow fiber membranes containing polymeric surfactant Pluronic F127 and Tetronic 1307 were also prepared by TIPS and nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS). 2.CO_2/CH_4 separation by this hybrid method The selectivity of CO_2 over CH_4 was about 359-800 and CO_2 in the feed gas was concentrated to 99.4-99.9mol%. The energy required for CO_2 separation was estimated. The present CO_2 recovery system had an economic advantage over the conventional CO_2 separation processes.

First we investigated on three themes from the viewpoint of phenomenology : (A) Innovative devices exploiting micro space, (B) Utilization of alternative energy (C) New operation methods for material processing. Next, modeling methods and simulation methods for intensified process systems, which included reaction systems, separation systems and utility systems, were discussed. In the term of this project, we achieved results in the following eleven themes for systematic approach to design of devices and their operation. (1) Compact design of a device for catalytic reaction process using alternating current field (2) Enhancement of efficiency of reaction / separation process using micro space and ultrasound field (3) Design of a reactor using an electrically heated catalyst for unsteady operation (4) Development of channels for fractionation using bifurcating microchannels (5) Dynamic operation of polymerization system using indirect ultrasonic irradiation (6) Operation of ultrafiltration module with microchannels (7) Precise separation using micro fluid dynamics (8) Enhancement of efficiency of reaction / separation process by spatio-temporal operation (9) Control of propylene oxidation using forced temperature cyclic operation (10) Study on optimal operational conditions for de-hydrogenation of 2-propanol using a spray pulse operation (11) Particle size control based on reaction / coagulation dynamics in a continuous emulsion polymerization process Moreover, it was made clear that the process intensification could not be achieved easily only by reduction approach for process design technology, which was based on "unit operation" embraced in traditional chemical engineering. Then we could conclude that "multi-viewpoint" (or "multi-scope") modeling and simulation would become necessary for propelling development of process intensification technologies.

- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kobe University, 2004 - 2005Establishment of a Method for Precisely Controlling Mixing/Reaction in Stirred Vessels Utilizing Dynamic Changes of Flow PatternsThis research project focused on dynamic changes of flow patterns in stirred vessels and aimed to establish of a method for precisely controlling mixing and/or reaction utilizing these phenomena from engineering aspect. Characteristics of mixing and particle dispersion in cylindrical and Conical Taylor vortex flow systems were investigated as a model for secondary circulating flow in a stirred vessel. At low Reynolds numbers, the fluid flowing near the vortex cell boundary was axially well-mixed, while the fluid element confined to the vortex core region poorly exchanged with the outer well-mixed flow region. Particle classification phenomena were also observed in Taylor vortex flow. The larger particle ranging from 50 to 80 μm could be seen in the outer region of vortex, while the smaller particles ranging from 20 to 50 mm were mainly observed in the vortex core region. We proposed a new particle classification device by combining these mixing and particle dispersion characteristics. In a conventional stirred vessel with Rushton turbine impeller, When the ratio of the impeller off-bottom clearance, C, to the tank inner diameter, T, is larger than 0.143 (C/T>0.143), the discharged stream was directed horizontally towards the walls whre it split into two streams that moved upwards and downwards generating two vortices (a double-loop pattrn). On the other hand, when C/T>0.143, the discharged stream moved downwards the bottom of vessel owing to the Coinda effect and then continued upwards to generate a strong vortex (a single-loop pattern). No transitional time-dependent flow state from a single to double-loop pattern could be seen at low Reynolds numbers. In future work, we will try to produce the transitional flow state by adding an appropriate perturbation. From the viewpoint of reaction control, continuous emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate was conducted. It has been found that particle size distribution of latex particles oscillates with a very large time period owing to the effect of coupling reaction, mixing and particle aggregation dynamics. This research project successfully developed a stochastic model which considers the competitive interaction between polymerization reaction and aggregation of latex particles.

A low shear and laminar flow is required for the fragile materials. Hence, chaotic mixing in a laminar flow field is suitable for development of such reactors. First, this research proposed a new design method of mixing field by means of a constructive approach and to discuss applicability of this method to a two-dimensional laminar mixing field. The presented method consisted of an estimation method based on the information entropy theory and a optimization method using a genetic algorithm. A very simple rotating flow is assigned for a basic component. This method successfully searched the very near optimal configuration of the rotating flow for obtaining a well-mixing state. Next, effect of mixing on chemical reactions in circular Taylor vortex flow reactor was experimentally investigated by using a second-order reaction system. The mixing behaviors in the inside of Taylor vortex cells were also observed by a flow-visualization technique. The flow-visualization experiment clearly revealed the existence of two mixing zones within a Taylor vortex cell at low Reynolds numbers. Namely, the fluid flowing near the cell boundary was axially well-mixed, while the fluid element confined to the vortex core region did not collide with cylindrical wall. This vortex, core region can be regarded as an isolated mixing region. It was found in the reaction experiment that the reaction rate was larger in laminar and singly periodic wavy Taylor vortex flow regimes having large isolated mixing region than in quasi-periodic and weakly turbulent Taylor vortex flow regimes. Mixing behaviors in a conical Taylor vortex flow reactor were investigated using flow visualization and salt-solution techniques. Three different flow modes were observed, i.e. a normal steady Taylor vortex flow, an upward motion of the Taylor vortices and helical vortex flow. In the case of the upward traveling motion, the tracer substance was transported with the traveling vortices in the main flow of cross-section and along the secondary flow streamlines at the outer-edge cell boundaries.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kobe University, 2001 - 2003Development of Highly Precise Controlling Methods for Polymer Microspher by Taking Advantage of Nonlinear DynamicsThis research attempted to take advantage of the nonlinear dynamics in continuous emulsion polymerization processes in order to control latex particle size distribution. When the emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate was conducted in a CSTR under conditions below the critical micelle concentration of the emulsifier, the monomer conversion attained in a time-independent steady-state operation showed a drastic rise from 0 to over 60% at a critical reaction temperature or mean residence time. The mean residence time or the reaction temperature was switched alternately between two values in the non-steady-state operation, one giving zero monomer conversion and the other a high monomer conversion in the usual steady-state operation. The periodic-switching operation induced oscillations in monomer conversion in time. The particle size distribution varied synchronously with the switching operation. This research showed the possibility of controlling the particle size distribution by adjusting the frequency and/or the amplitude of the temporal variation of the mean residence time or reaction temperature. This research found that even while the constant monomer conversion was maintained at the steady state, the particle size distribution oscillated with a very large time period. This research revealed that the oscillations occur by a competitive interaction between polymerization reaction and aggregation of latex particles. In order to vary the colloidal stability of latex particles, a nonionic surfactant was added in some cases. It was found that using a mixture of a nonionic surfactant and an anionic surfactant was very effective for suppressing the oscillations. In order to take advantage of the oscillations of particle size, emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate was performed in a system of two continuous stirred tank reactors in series. The oscillatory behavior could be controlled by varying the rotational speed of the impeller and the mean residence time. The research using two CSTR in series indicated the possibility of producing various poly-dispersed latex particles.
- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 奨励研究(A), 奨励研究(A), 神戸大学, 2000 - 2001円錐型テイラー・クエット流の流動・混合現象の解明と新型化学反応装置への応用本研究では、円錐型のテイラー・クエット流も渦流状態において、大域循環流の効果で渦セルが自発的に軸方向に移動することに着目して、この流れ形の混合特性が低剪断でマイルドであり、かつ大域的な混合も良いという予測をたてた。この予測に基づき、この流れ系の有する複雑な流動状態を精密に制御することにより、今までにない新規な反応装置への展開を目指し、以下の項目について調べることを目的とする。 1)数値計算法、流れの可視化法、流速測定法を用いて詳細に流動状態を調べる。 2)蛍光染料を用いた可視化法による濃度変位測定等により混合・反応特性を調べる。 今年度は昨年度作成の流動マップに基づき、各流動モードの流動特性を調べるとともに、蛍光染料にフルオレセインナトリウムを用いて、中和反応を利用することによる孤立混合領域の可視化および、トレーサ応答法による混合特性について調べた。また、一般の撹拌槽の混合と比較するために、低レイノルズ数域における撹拌槽の孤立混合領域についても調べた。同様に従来型の円筒型のテイラー渦流反応装置についても層流混合特性を調べた。その結果、円錐型のテイラー・クエット流反応装置において、大域循環流の効果で渦セルが自発的に軸方向に移動する流れモードは比較的低いレイノルズ数域で出現し、渦セルの移動速度はレイノルズ数が低いほど速くなることがわかった。さらに、この流れモードでは注入されたトレーサは渦内に留まり、渦セルの移動により上方に移動することがわかった。このことより、このモードの混合特性は従来の渦セルが移動しない定在型のテイラー渦流とは全く異なったものであることがわかった。また、定在型の渦流モードに対して、流れ場に微小な周期的摂動を加えると撹拌槽の孤立混合領域と同様のフラクタルな微細構造が生じることもわかった。以上の結果から、大域循環流の効果で渦セルが自発的に軸方向に移動する流れモードを混合に利用すれば、非常に流速の遅い状態でも大域的な混合が有効に行われることが確かめられた。このことより、バイオリアクターや重合反応装置などの低剪断や高粘性によるレイノルズ数の低い操作条件が必要な反応装置に対して、この流れが非常に有効であることがわかった。

The second year purpose was to investigate the stabilization of chemical oscillations by dynamic operations. The methodology for designing a mixing field was also studied from a viewpoint of emergent synthesis. 1. Effect of Mixing on Bifurcation Characteristies of Belousov-Zhabotinskii Reaction : Even under a condition when a CSTR was stirred well at very high rotation numbers, the effect of reactor volume, which should be taken into account on scale-up design, was still found on the bifurcation characteristies of chemical oscillations. 2. Self-sustained Oscillation in Continuous Emulsion Polymerization of Vinyl Acetate and Effect of Dynamic Operations : Under a condition of emulsifier concentration below CMC, self-sustained oscillations of not only the monomer conversion but also the particle size distribution were observed. Those oscillations were regularized by means of dynamic operation periodically switching over the mean residence time between the two values, the one is larger and the other is smaller than the critical value. 3. An emergent synthesis for designing mixing fields of very high viscosity fluid was confirmed to be possible if nonlinear dynamic data of simple flow systems are integrated with the aid of constitutive approach.
- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 奨励研究(A), 奨励研究(A), 神戸大学, 1998 - 1999生物的進化戦略を利用した化学反応場の最適混合パターンの創出本研究では、反応装置内のマクロ的な現象はマクロおよび、ミクロな混合を制御することで制御可能であるという観点に立ち、生物的進化戦略である自然淘汰の原理に基づいた遺伝的アルゴリズムを組み込むことにより、最適混合場を設計することを目的とし、ミクロ混合の素反応過程間の相互作用に及ぼす影響とマクロ混合の局所反応の空間相互作用に及ぼす影響を完全混合槽型反応器および、テイラー渦流反応器を用い、非線形化学反応(BZ反応と過酸化水素水とヨウ素を用いた2次反応)により調べた。この非線形化学反応に及ぼす流動・混合効果を明らかにするために、複雑な流動遷移の分岐特性を有するテイラー渦流反応器の不安定性と物質移動・混合に対する履歴現象の影響について観察した。また、反応の非線形性の生産物特性に及ぼす効果も調べる必要が生じ、これについて、酢酸ビニルの連続乳化重合に生じる重合率の自励振動現象と得られるラテックス粒子の粒径分布の変化を観察した。次に、最適混合場の創出のために、情報エントロピーを用いた新しい混合評価法を提案した。さらに、この混合評価法を用いて遺伝的アルゴリズムを用いて混合場の最適化を試みた。また、実際的な反応装置への応用に向けて、撹拌槽内の不均一混合の観察とその評価も行った。本研究により得られた結果は以下の通りである。 1.非線形反応系に生じる自励振動現象は、反応活性化因子と反応抑制因子の相互作用により生じ、これを利用することでラテックス粒子の粒子径分布などの生産物特性を制御することが可能であることがわかった。 2.反応器内のマクロおよび、ミクロな混合特性は 自励振動現象などの化学反応の非線形現象に大きく影響を及ぼすことがわかった。さらに、マクロおよび、ミクロな混合の空間的な不均一さが反応を安定化する場合と不安定化する場合の両方に働くこと、非線形性に応じて反応速度に及ぼす効果が異なることを見出した。 3.今回提案した情報エントロピーを用いた混合評価法により混合場の不均一さを定量化することができた。 4.この評価法をもとに遺伝的アルゴリズムを組み込むことにより、混合場の最適化を図ることができた。 5.実際的な反応装置の例である撹拌槽型の反応器においても、低レイノルズ数で混合を行うとき、撹拌翼上下にトーラス状の孤立混合領域が存在しており、このような不均一混合場においても、今回提案の評価法と最適化の有効性を見出した。

Belousov-Zhabotinskii reaction and emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate were conducted in two kinds of continuous flow reactor : continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and Taylor vortex flow reactor (TVFR). (1) A peculiar bifurcation scenario of chemical oscillations which has a window of chaotic intermittency between the singly-periodic and the chaotic oscillations has been confirmed in the BZ reaction conducted in CSTRs. (2) The characteristics of streamwise propagation of chemical oscillations were successfully observed in the BZ reaction in a TVFR.It has been found that some irregularity or quasi-periodicity appears at the entrance region owing to nonlinear coupling between the inherent oscillation of the TVFR and the input of forced oscillation supplied from the CSTR used as a pre-reactor. In the downstream region, the unstable chemical oscillations are attenuated to become regular singly-periodic oscillation. (3) The continuous emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate showed chemical oscillations under the feed condition of emulsifier giving low concentration below CMC in the aqueous phase. The process of homogeneous nucleation and growth of primary particles and the process of agglomeration of primary particles occurred alternately. This suggests a possibility of controlling the size distribution.

A continuous Taylor vortex flow reactor (abbreviated TVFR) was utilized as a complex flow system imperfectly mixed. Belousov-Zhabotinskii reaction (abbreviated B-Z reaction) was adopted as a complex reaction system with autocatalytic elementary processes. (1) Flow Instabilities and Bifurcation of TVFR : THe instabilities of Taylor vortex flow depend on the hysteresis how to attain a steady state at low Reynolds numbers, whereas the dependency on the hysteresis becomes weak at high Reynolds numbers. (2) Instabilities and Bifurcation of B-Z reaction in TVFR : The continuous flow system as the test apparatus consists of a CSTR followed by a TVFR.The effluent from the CSTR was supplied as the feed into the TVFR by varying the flow rate. There appeared irregular disturbances when the inlet condition of the TVFR was singly-periodic, whereas no remarkable irregularity could be found when the inlet condition was in dynamical equilibrium. The spatio-temporal oscillation patterns were successfully described qualitatively by a numerical simulation based on "Coupled Map Lattice Method" using an Oregonator reaction model.
- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 重点領域研究, 重点領域研究, 神戸大学, 1991 - 1991噴流と後流の組合せによる衝突伝熱の促進スロット噴流の二次元性を高めるために,アスペクト比25の大きな縮流ノデル(40mm×1000mm)を製作し,噴流の衝突領域に再度焦点を絞って界面更新に寄与する大きなスケ-ルの流れの非定常性について実験により調べた。そのために局所壁面親度勾配変動を測定するための平面型シア-センサ-を衝突板表面に凹凸がないように埋め込み,その両側5mmに平面圧力変動を測定するための圧力タップを設けた。圧力変動はピエゾバランス式差圧変換器により測定した。界面更新運動を抽出するために局所壁面速度勾配の時間変化率を採用し、条件付統計解析をする一方,表面圧力の時間変化率を用いて界面更新に寄与する非定常れのパタ-ン分類を行った。その結果,伝熱面をノズル径(幅)の6倍下流に設置した場合,淀み領域の伝熱促進に寄与すると思われる界面更新効果の強い流れは,(1)噴流コアの高速部・低速部の伝熱面への周期的な衝突による非定常な加速流,および(2)噴流中心軸の揺動による瞬間的淀み点のずれによる非定常な加速流であり,外縁領域における界面効果の強い流れは姿突する噴流の剪断層でできる大きなスケ-ルの渦の伝熱面への断続的な衝突による非定常流であることが明かになった。この結果は円柱を押入した後流についても言えることであり,今後,円柱後流を非定常性の強い流れにするために円柱の配列を工夫すべきことが示差された。
