      Sloped-weir fishways have been proposed to improve aquatic connectivity and restore fish migrations in agricultural ditches. However, the most suitable design for such fishways has not been identified. The goals of this study were to identify the most suitable sloped-weir fishway design for ascending fish and to determine suitable flow rates when fish ascend the fishway. Nine types of weirs were made by changing the angle of the weir slope (α) and that of the V-shaped notch on the upper surface of the weir (β). Several volumetric flow rates (1.58-1.98 L/s, 5.09-5.37 L/s, 9.24-9.54 L/s, and 14.35-14.43 L/s) were used in the experiments for each weir type. The ascent rates for three fish species (Oryzias sakaizumii, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, and Carassius sp.) were determined for each type weir in the experimental flume. Hydraulic conditions were measured, including velocity and depth of water flowing over the weir, and flow velocity and depth in the area downstream of the weir. We identified two types of suitable weirs for O. sakaizumii: one with α = 60°, β = 5°, and the other: α = 45°, β = 30°; O. sakaizumii was not affected by flow velocity while ascending the fishway. The three weir types with β = 30° were suitable for the ascent of M. anguillicaudatus, which ascended well when the flow rate was above 5 L/s. For Carassius sp., all weir types were well, especially with flow rates over 9 L/s. In addition, our results suggest that the weir with α = 45°, β = 30° was suitable for all three species.

    Huge landslides in the upper reaches of the Tedori River have caused a long period of high turbidity in the river, predominant since May 2015. This turbidity has caused concerns about recharge of groundwater in the downstream alluvial fan. In this study, the measurements of paddy percolation and underflow water, before and after the occurrence of high turbidity, were used to examine its influence on groundwater recharge functions. The measurements included water requirement rates in an area covering the Tedori River alluvial fan and river discharge observations in the section of the river that flows through the alluvial fan. The results revealed that the amount of paddy percolation decreased significantly in response to the elevated turbidity, and the volume and width of the riverbed underflow water were reduced. The amount of groundwater recharge was estimated based on these measurements, which revealed that groundwater recharge from paddy percolation was reduced by 270 mm/year (36%), and the recharge from riverbed underflow water was reduced by 591 mm/year (61%). The total groundwater recharge was reduced by 861 mm/year (36%), a value that corresponded favorably to the empirical groundwater level measurements.

     Because of huge landslides in the upper reaches of the Tedori River, highly concentrated turbid water with average concentration of 585 mg/L and maximum concentration of 4,012 mg/L has been discharged continuously into the river since May 2015. This study was conducted to evaluate the high-turbidity water effects on percolation from paddy fields in the Tedori River alluvial fan. Water requirement rates in the alluvial fan paddy fields were investigated in 2014 when huge landslides were not occurring and in 2016 when huge landslides were occurring. Changes in percolation from the paddy fields were then analyzed. Average percolation from all paddy fields was found to be 12.4 mm/day in 2014 and 7.9 mm/day in 2016, indicating a significant decrease in percolation. Moreover, paddy fields from which percolation decreased were distributed in the middle and lower reaches of the alluvial fan. Results suggest that fine soils are supplied to the middle and lower reaches of the alluvial fan. We estimated the groundwater recharge based on the observation results, which revealed that the groundwater recharge from the paddy fields was reduced by 36 %. The total groundwater recharge was reduced by 25 %.

    本研究では、林内とオープンスペースにおける積雪・融雪を比較した研究論文を探し、これらの研究結果を整理することで、林内の積雪とオープンスペースの積雪のどちらの方が遅くまで残るかを明らかにすることを試みた。収集したデータおよび観測データから、林内における消雪日(SDDf)と隣接するオープンエリアにおける消雪日(SDDo)を読み取り、林内とオープンスペースの消雪日の違い(ΔSDD)を求めた。さらに、ΔSDDと気象条件(冬期降水量(mm)、冬期平均気温(℃)、冬期平均風速(m/s))との関係について調べた。その結果、冬期平均気温が低くなるにつれて林内の積雪の方が長く残ること、風速が強くなるにつれて林内の積雪の方が遅くまで残る傾向があることなどが分かった。さらに、消雪日の違いを目的変数、冬期平均気温、冬期降水量、冬期平均風速を説明変数として、決定木モデルを適用した。その結果、冬期平均風速が2.0 m/sを境にして分岐しており、これよりも風速が強いエリアにおいては林内の方がオープンスペースよりも積雪が長く残る傾向となった。また、風速が2.0 m/sより弱い場合、冬期平均気温が2.3℃よりも低ければ林内の積雪の方が長く残り、2.3℃よりも高ければオープンスペースの積雪の方が長く残る結果となった。

    In Mekong river basin, population increase and economic growth may cause the water pollution problem in the future. This study aimed to assess spatial water quality environment in main stream and tributaries of Mekong river. For that purpose, liner regression model to estimate unit of nutrient pollution loading and water circulation model to estimate river discharge were developed, and then river nutrient concentration was also calculated. As a result, estimated unit of nutrient pollution loading expressed the characteristics of wastewater treatment process and agricultural level in Mekong river basin. Calculated river discharge and annual average river nutrient concentration were good agreement with observed data.

    In Mekong river basin, productivity of rice is unstable because more than 70 % of paddy fields were classified as rain-fed paddy. In addition, future global climate change and land use change will make negative impact on rice production in this region. In order to analyze the stability of rice production quantitatively, it is important to consider the rice farming management such as strategy of rain-fed rice yield stabilization. In this study, rice production model was developed combined with distributed type water circulation model. Developed rice production model was applied to Mekong river basin, and verified with the statistic data of Northeast Thailand from 1986 to 1995. As a result, rice planted area, yield, production was good agreement with statistic data, especially errors in rice yield was improved by considering the strategy of rain-fed rice yield stabilization.

    In Mekong river basin, population increase and rapid economical growth may cause the water pollution problem in the future. In this study, a liner regression model was developed by using annual nutrient load and spatial statistic data from GIS analysis. Estimated units of nutrient pollution loading of forest, agricultural land, human and cattle represented the characteristics of Mekong river basin such as agricultural level, lifestyle, waste water treatment, livestock intensity, and compared with literature values of Japan. The result of effluent ratio from each pollution factors at five observation stations showed that nutrient load from human and agricultural land were more dominant in downstream area. Then, spatial distribution of nutrients load on 1km grid resolution was calculated from estimated unit of nutrient pollution loading.

    In Mekong river basin, productivity of rice is still low and unstable because more than 70 % of paddy fields were classified as rain-fed paddy. In addition, future global climate change and population growth will make negative impact on rice production in this region. In order to analyze the stability of rice production quantitatively, it is important to consider the groundwater hydrological environment. In this study, rice production model was developed combined with distributed type water circulation model. This model consists of three sub models, harvested area estimation model used of FAO-33, yield estimation model used of Monteith equations and FAO-56 and rainfall runoff model used of TOPMODEL. As a result, rice yield was good agreement with statistic data, and especially rice yield distribution was refined by the result of previous studies. By outputting refinement of rice yield distribution, the self-sufficiency balance can be evaluated on a regional scale.

    In order to better understand the process of snow accumulation and melting, we surveyed snow depth at many points in a forested catchment using an inexpensive and robust observation method based on small temperature loggers. The study area was 800m×400m, and the number of observations was 21. Observations were conducted during three winter periods. We then investigated the relationships between snow depth, topographical information (elevation and aspect), and forest properties (canopy openness). We set snow depth as objective variable and elevation, aspect, and canopy openness as predictor variables and performed a multiple regression analysis. The results show that all variables are significant predictors of snow depth in the December to January period. Conversely, the correlation coefficient of aspect is the same as that of elevation during the snow melting season. Each regression coefficient is larger in a heavy snow year and is smaller in a light snow year, and the regression coefficients changed considerably over the winter period. These results indicate that the approach used in this study is useful to investigate snow accumulation and melting in a forested area.
