- Evaluation of Fatigue Crack Growth Characteristics about Mixed Mode Influence and Thickness Dependence Using the Three-point Bending SpecimensMany industrial structures are worked under complex load. - In engineering applications, fractures occur mostly from surface or internal three-dimensional cracks due to defects already existing in the material. These generally propagate in all directions and often have irregular shapes, and are not limited only to metallurgical defects but also include those which are due to the fastening of parts, configuration design, as well as those that result from the need to provide lubrication of ships and offshore structures. Since these generate a stress concentration zone, fatigue crack initiation and propagation are strongly affected. However, these are inevitable in design. - Cast iron is used as material for motor and pump casings due to its superior casting characteristics. In addition, it is used for cylinder liners and pistons exposed to high temperatures because its strength does not deteriorate even at high temperature conditions. - A variational principle that minimizes the errors and noises associated with experimental measurements of two-dimensional non-steady-state temperature fields is investigated. The variational principle also assures the satisfaction of the governing time-developing heat conduction equation. On the basis of the variational principle, an intelligent hybrid experimental-numerical method is formulated and a scheme of calculation is presented. Furthermore, a numerical simulation is illustrated. - In this paper, intelligent hybrid methods that automatically detect and eliminate errors and noises in full-fields experimental measurement fields are summarized. Each intelligent hybrid method is constructed by the corresponding variational principle minimizing the experimental measurement errors. In this paper, for elastic-plastic problems, the incremental variational principle is explained. The intelligent hybrid method makes it possible to estimate stresses, fracture mechanics parameters and other higher order parameters. - Crack bifurcation phenomena depend on loading condition and characteristic of material. Therefore, we try to observe simple crack bifurcation phenomena by the dual loading system. At first, the experiments for dynamic crack propagation are carried out under various loads. Occurrence of crack bifurcation depends on load balance in the dual loading system. For the cases of dynamic crack bifurcation and nonbifurcation, the fracture mechanics parameters are evaluated based on the experimental results. For all crack bifurcation cases, the energy flux values at the crack bifurcation moment are almost constant, which indicates an existence of critical material value governing the dynamic crack bifurcation.
Next, the special cases of crack bifurcation are discussed. The asymmetric crack bifurcation is occurred under thesame governing low for dynamic crack bifurcation. Also the fracture mechanics parameters at each crack tip have different values. In one more special case, single crack bifurcates to three propagating cracks. - The aim of this study is to examine the applicability of the T^* integral to numerical prediction for fracture path of curving crack. In this paper, the theoretical background on numerical prediction for fracture path of curving crack using T^* integral is shown. As a special case, we carried out the elastic numerical prediction using the T^* integral, the moving finite element method and the Delaunay triangulation for fracture path of curving crack under mixed mode condition. - In this study, the interfacial crack kinking behavior of bimaterial specimens are investigated. The bimaterial specimen consist of epoxy and aluminum alloy. To produce various mixed-mode states, the loading angle is changed systematically from 0°to 180°. All kinked fractures occurred at loading angle ≧120°. The crack-tip deformation of bimaterial specimens is observed by Moire Interferometry. The fracture mechanics parameters for interfacial crack in bimaterial specimens are evaluated by the aid of finite element analyses. Fractures energy supply for interfacial crack is discussed by the measurements of separated J integral. - In this study, using the moving finite method, the generation-phase simulation of three-dimensional dynamic fracture in a double cantilever beam specimen is carried out. Also, the theoretical and computation aspects related to the response of time varying fracture parameters such as dynamic J integral and stress intensity factor along the propagating crack front are presented. The stress singularities along the dynamically propagating crack front are evaluated. - In actual fracture phenomena, branched cracks were often observed. The numerical simulation technique of dynamic crack bifurcation has not been established enough due to some numerical difficulties. The development of this simulation technique is very important to clarify the crack bifurcation mechanism. The authors have previously developed the moving finite element method with Delaunay triangulation for crack bifurcation analyses. In this study, the numerical path prediction is tried by using the moving FEM. For bifurcated cracks, crack propagation paths are predicted according to the maximum hoop stress. The results of numerical prediction agree with the experimental results and the results of generation phase simulation. - In this study, the difference of static and dynamic fracture behavior is discussed to clarify the characteristic of dynamic fracture under mixed-mode load. The automatic moving finite element method with Delaunay triangulation is developed to archive numerical prediction for fracture path of three-point bending specimen. - In order to investigate inhomogeneity effects in elastic-plastic fracture, A533B steel and HT80 steel, which have considerably different yield stresses, were chosen. The moire interferometry was used for direct measurements of the crack-tip behavior in the homogeneous CT specimens of A533B and HT80, and in electron-beam-welded inhomogeneous CT specimens of these two materials. Two-dimensional moire gratings with relatively low frequency of 300 lines/mm were used to follow large plastic deformations. The near-tip deformations were compared with the corresponding HRR singular fields. - In the present study, the shapes of dynamically propagating crack fronts in relatively thick DCB specimens of PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) were taken using a high-speed camera. The nature of mirrorlike fracture surfaces in PMMA was utilized to visualize the instantaneous crack shapes in high-speed photographs. This feature was also used in the trigger system for the light source of the high-speed camera. Precise measurements of instantaneous crack fronts appearing in the high-speed photographs were made using an image processor. - OS12F076 Ultra-high-speed Observation of cutting of failure phenomenon in thin metallic lamina by punch and measurement of displacements by digital image correlation methodMachine components of industrial products are often produced by press cutting. However, the mechanism of cutting (ductile fracture of metals) is not perfectly understood. In order to clarify this mechanism, cutting processes were observed by an ultrahigh-speed camera. The ultrahigh-speed camera is capable of recording 10,00,000 frames per second (102 frames in a 10-ns exposure time); each frame has 80,000 pixels. Therefore, this ultrahigh-speed camera is currently the world's most advanced camera in terms of spatial and time resolutions. A detailed movie of the cutting process was recorded. The details of the cutting process include the crack length versus time, crack tip opening angle, and fracture path. The crack tip opening angles were evaluated approximately 0.1 mm behind the tip of the propagating crack. The CTOA criterion was found to be almost valid during the cutting process. Furthermore, in order to use the image correlation method, random patterns were generated by spraying paint onto the metal sections. Images of a specimen section were taken after punching the sheet metal. The distributions of displacements were evaluated by the digital image correlation method. We found smoothly cut sections and rough surfaces. A smoothly cut section is very important for industrial products. In this study, the optimal speed of punching and punch-die clearances were examined. The ductile fracture criterion determined in this study is extremely useful for fabricating machine components by press cutting because it can be used for simulations without the need for a cutting system. - OS12F036 Experimental study on thermal stress fracture problem using image correlation methodFracture mechanics is a discipline that originated from the need to prevent accidents and the experience of many unexpected structure failures. In a structure failure, there are many cases where an accident is caused by a crack that forms and propagates because of internal defects. In the case of an engine and high-speed rotation equipment, the safety design may receive a load at a temperature outside the normal temperature range owing to the thermal stress effect. Therefore, in order to avoid failure due to thermal stress, this effect needs to be evaluated. However, the safety rate at which the effect of the heat stress is quantitatively evaluated in all cases is not necessarily set, and heat load accidents may be reported as rebooting of the engine. There are a lot of theses of low cycle, for example, exhaust manifold of the engine thermal fatigue etc. as for many of researches by the thermal stress effect, and the finding until fracture after the crack propagation is not obtained enough. or J_ is generally used as criterion for safety design. These criteria are defined under plane sirain condition. Shear lips on crack surface is caused in case of thin plates fracture. Therefore, fracture mechanism in thin plates is not clarified. And some of these fracture behavior depends on loading speed. In this study, three point bending fracture experiments are demonstrated to gain basic data for elastic plastic fracture in thin plates. The specimens are consists of aluminum alloy. Pure mode I and mixed mode fracture experiments are done under quasi-static loading and dynamic loading. Roughness on crack surfaces are evaluated using laser focus displacement meter. Fracture path, crack surface trend and surface roughness are depended on loading speed. - OS0105 Numerical simulation of fracture path prediction for stress corrosion crackingIn recent years, it causes the stress corrosion cracking, and the breakdowns of piping have occurred in the nuclear power generation plant. As a result, there is a possibility that a serious accident of radiation leak happens. The stress corrosion cracking is a phenomenon that the crack occurs in the material because of the interaction of the stress and the erosive environment, and the crack progresses at time. This study is about the stress corrosion cracking in the combination of the SCM435 steel and the boric acid solution. This combination has the feature that corrosion happens comparatively easily. This simulation is done according to acquired data by the experiment. The stress intensity factor is compared with an analytical solution, and the validity of this simulation is verified. - 724 Ultra high speed Observations of Dynamic Interfatial Crack-tip Propagation in Composite MaterialsThe composite materials bonded some different materials may have cracks in their interface because of poor bonding, fatigue, and other factors. In the experiments for interfacial fracture under dynamic load, transonic crack propagations can be happened. In these phenomena, the crack propagation velocities exceed the shear wave velocity of the compliant side material. And, the contact of crack surfaces behind the propagating interfacial crack tip has been reported some experimental, analytical and numerical studies, In this study, we recorded interfacial transonic fractures phenomena and inclined fracture phenomena by ultra high-speed video camera. Based on the measurements of crack tip positions, the histories of crack propagating velocities could be estimated. - 710 Analysis of In-Plane Intersonically Propagating Interface Crack with a Finite Contact ZoneThe report of Rosakis group has focused attention on steady-state intersonic interfacial crack growth accounting for crack face contact in elastic/rigid bimaterial but could not handle issues relating to energy transmission across the interface. The present paper derived a complete explicit expression of the asymptotic field induced by intersonically propagating interfacial crack in elastic bimaterial for in-plane case. The stress and displacement distribution on the contact area, crack tip and two singular characteristic lines are analyzed. - Development of Numerical Simulation Method for Fracture Path Prediction in Elastic-Plastic Materials Using the Path Independent T^* IntegralFirst, for growing cracks in elastic-plastic materials, several incremental variational principles are developed to satisfy the boundary conditions near newly created crack surfaces. Then using these variational principles, several types of moving finite element methods are formulated and developed, based on the Delaunay automatic triangulation. Furthermore, theoretical backgrounds on numerical prediction for fracture path of curving crack using T^* integral are explained. Using the automatic moving finite element method, fracture-path prediction simulations are carried out for various cases of mixed-mode elastic-plastic fracture. - The Numerical Fracture Path Prediction Simulations for Cracks in Materials Containing Inclusions and VoidsIn this paper, fracture-path prediction simulations were carried out for cracks in elastic materials containing inclusions and voids, using the moving finite element method based on Delaunay automatic mesh generation was used. - Numerical Analysis of Elasto Visco-plastic Fracture with Large Deformation using Moving Finite Element MethodIn numerical analyses of dynamic elasto visco-plastic fracture, the expressions of boundary conditions near the propagating crack tip are key-points for accurate simulation. - 704 Effects of Specimen Thickness on Three-Dimensional Dynamic Fracture ParametersIn this study, in order to account for the thickness effects, experimental investigation and finite element analysis have been carried out. The work described in this paper was motivated by the experimental observations i. e. - Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), 2002 - 2004Fundamental Studies on the Limiting Velocity of Fast Dynamic Fracture in SolidsIn experimental aspect, using the presently developed spring constraint loading machine, dynamic fracture tests in homogeneous materials were carried out. As the results, a limiting fast fracture that exceeds 75% of the shear wave velocity c_s of the material was successfully recorded by the presently developed world most advanced ultrahigh-speed video camera system (maximum framing rate : one million frames per second, 10 ns pulse exposure time) this fracture velocity exceeds the limiting crack velocity predicted by the near-tip singular stress field theory. However, taking account of the higher order terms of the near-tip stress field It was theoretically proved that the ultrahigh-sped straight fracture of.75^c_s is possible.to occur Furthermore, relation ship between crack-tip total energy flow flux (ψ_
total energy flux in to the propagating crack tip per unit time) and fracture surface roughness was clarified. It was found that the fracture surface roughness increases for increasing ψ_ . Fracture surface roughness may triggers dynamic crack branching fracture. The governing condition of dynamic crack branching has been a long-term unsolved problem for humankind. In our previous experimental studies, we have proved the critical crack-tip total energy flow flux criterion (dynamic two crack branching occurs when the crack-tip total energy flow flux ψ_ total exceeds a critical material value) In our laboratory, very versatile moving finite element method based on Delaunay automatic triangulation (MFEMBOAT) has been developed. Using MFEMBOAT, dynamic multiple crack branching phenomena was firstly succeeded. The simulation results proved the critical crack-tip total energy flow flux criterion is also valid for the dynamic multiple crack branching. Keywords : (1) 2),(3)Coherent Gradient Sensing(CGS)Method, (4)Ultrahigh-speed Video camera, (5)Transonic I Interface Fracture, (6)Mach Shock wave, (7)1High Energy Impact Fracture Testing Machine - 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 若手研究(B), 神戸大学(海事科学部), 2002 - 2003並列コンピュータによる大変形弾塑性破壊のき裂進展経路予測数値シミュレーション本年度は,1.材料内の熱発生・温度上昇を考慮した大変形破壊の数値シミュレーション,2.アルミ合金中央貫通き裂試験片の混合モード破壊実験,3.同実験の生成系数値シミュレーション・き裂進展経路数値予測シミュレーション,4.変形体表面の変位分布計測用のデジタル画像相関法の高精度・効率化,5.き裂進展予測プログラムの計算並列化に取り組んだ. 1については,塑性仕事が熱変換するものと仮定し,材料構成式の温度依存性を考慮して高速き裂進展挙動をシミュレートした.その結果から,熱発生を考慮した場合,準展き裂先端近傍局所では顕著な温度上昇がみられるものの,この温度上昇は巨視的な破壊現象にはあまり影響を及ぼさないことが明らかになった. 2では,中央貫通き裂試験片の混合モード破壊実験を行った.その結果,破壊開始直後き裂は若干不安定な進展履歴を示すこともある・大局的にはモードI支配型破壊が生じる方向にき裂が進展することが明らかになった.さらに本実験に対する生成形数値シミュレーション{項目3}では,破壊力学パラメータの推移を明らかにし,T^*積分による破壊経路予測が妥当であることを明らかにできた.さらにき裂進展経路予測数値シミュレーションを行い,実験とよく一致したき裂進展経路を数値的に予測することに成功している. 4のデジタル画像相関法では,実際の破壊実験のランダムパターン像を用いて変位分布を評価し,画像相関法-有限要素解析ハイブリッド法を開発・適用することにより,き裂先端近傍応力特異場を高精度で評価することに成功した.さらに画像相関プログラムの演算短縮化にも成功している.5については並列計算プログラムのプロトタイプを作成している.その演算効率については今後,学会にて講演,論文を投稿する予定である.

These studies were performed by using experimental, theoretical and computational mechanics approaches in a unified fashion. Through these investigations, fundamental information and data on dynamic fracture phenomena were acquired. Furthermore, some mechanisms of dynamic fracture phenomena were clarified. The major research results of this project are listed as follows : 1. Experimental Studies : (1) Elucidation of the governing condition for dynamic branching fracture (2) Development of the theory of caustics for transonic interfacial fracture (3) Developments of various intelligent hybrid measurement methods automatically detecting and eliminating experimental measurement erros (4) Development of the minimum correlation coefficient searching method for full-field measurement image correlation method (5) elucidation of correlation between the dynamic crack-tip energy flux and fracture surface coarseness (6) Measurements of the stress singularity field factor and the singularity order for transonically propagating crack tips 2. Theoretical Studies (1) Derivation of a unified asymptotic solution for dynamic interfacial fracture (2) Development of the switching method of the path independent dynamic J integral for dynamically branched cracks (3) Derivation of the dynamic J integral for piezoelectric materials (4) Derivation of the asymptotic crack tip near field solution for piezoelectric materials (5) Development of the component separation method for extracting mechanical mixed-mode stress intensity factors and the electric displacement intensity factor. (6) Derivation of the variational principle for carack growth problems 3. Computational Mechanics Studies : (1) Developments of various moving finite element methods based on Delaunay automatic mesh generation (2) Success of numerical path perediction simulations of dynamnic branching fracture (3) Success of the application-phase simulations of dynamic fracture phenomena under constant crack acceleration (4) Evaluation of the dynamic J integrals and the stress intensity factors for naturally and dynamically propagating crack fronts (5) Development of nonlinear dynamic fracture simulation methodology (6) Development of simulation methodology for transonic interfacial fracture with crack-face contact (7) Elucidation of the formation mechanism of three-dimensional dynamic fracture front Since the above research results include many important items, the outcomes of this research project can be expected to contribute to the advancement of dynamic fracture mechanics.
