- Introduction In recent decades, interpersonal coordination and synchrony have been extensively examined in the field of psychology and cognitive science. Studies suggest that perceptual information enables interpersonal coordination and that perceptual noise may even enhance coordination. However, how these perceptual factors influence interpersonal coordination dynamics between head and body movements remains unclear. This study investigated the effect of visual information on the interpersonal coordination of head and body movements during dyadic conversations. Methods The availability of visual information was manipulated by positioning a partition halfway between a pair of participants, and the conversations were recorded using a video camera. A video-based human pose estimation software (OpenPose) was used to quantify each interlocutor’s head and body movements, which were submitted for cross-recurrence quantification analysis (CRQA), to assess the degree of coordination between the interlocutors. Results The results showed different effects between head- and body-movement coordination (i.e., a CRQA measure, maximum line length). The occlusion of visual information increased head-movement coordination, whereas it decreased body-movement coordination. Discussion The results suggest that a distinct mechanism may be present at the head- and body-movement coordination level and this study observed differing appearances of compensatory behaviors. Further studies should be conducted to investigate the complex relationships between interpersonal coordination dynamics and various kinds of communication constraints, such as long-term or short-term, and lower-order (perceptual-motor) or higher-order (cognitive-social) level constraints.Frontiers Media SA, Aug. 2024, Frontiers in Psychology, 15, English, No password[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Recently, the importance of creativity in society has been clearly recognized. Furthermore, educational practices through art, such as the STEAM paradigm, are being implemented gradually. However, the framework of how creativity should be fostered through art has not been sufficiently discussed. Based on studies of artists' creative expertise, this study proposed a framework for fostering creativity through art. In addition, we conducted a year-long art program based on this framework in an online environment and investigated its effects. As a framework, we proposed the importance of long-term support for the dynamic development of participants' creativity. We mainly focused on the following four components: active interaction with objects and the environment through bodily action, active interaction with others and their works (inspiration), exploration in creative processes (exploration), and promotion of intrinsic motivation and decrease in creativity anxiety (motivation). After a total of eight workshops over a year, we observed improvements in the participants' creativity anxiety, divergent thinking skills, images of art and creation, and openness to others. We discussed the effectiveness of the proposed framework and the advantages and limitations of using an online environment.Lead, Aug. 2021, Creativity, 8(1) (1), 89 - 107, No password[Refereed]Scientific journal

- An emerging perspective on human cognition and performance sees it as a kind of self-organizing phenomenon involving dynamic coordination across the body, brain and environment. Measuring this coordination faces a major challenge. Time series obtained from such cognitive, behavioral, and physiological coordination are often complicated in terms of non-stationarity and non-linearity, and in terms of continuous vs. categorical scales. Researchers have proposed several analytical tools and frameworks. One method designed to overcome these complexities is recurrence quantification analysis, developed in the study of non-linear dynamics. It has been applied in various domains, including linguistic (categorical) data or motion (continuous) data. However, most previous studies have applied recurrence methods individually to categorical or continuous data. To understand how complex coordination works, an integration of these types of behavior is needed. We aimed to integrate these methods to investigate the relationship between language (categorical) and motion (continuous) directly. To do so, we added temporal information (a time stamp) to categorical data (i.e., language), and applied joint recurrence analysis methods to visualize and quantify speech-motion coordination coupling during a rap performance. We illustrate how new dynamic methods may capture this coordination in a small case-study design on this expert rap performance. We describe a case study suggesting this kind of dynamic analysis holds promise, and end by discussing the theoretical implications of studying complex performances of this kind as a dynamic, coordinated phenomenon.Apr. 2021, Frontiers in psychology, 12, 614431 - 614431, English, No password, International magazine[Refereed]Scientific journal
- In the performing arts, such as music and dance performances, people actively interact with each other and show their exciting performances. Some studies have proposed that this interaction is a social origin of the performing arts. Some have further investigated this phenomenon based on the synchronization and coordination theory. Though the majority of these studies have focused on the collaborative context, several genres of the performing arts, such as jazz sessions and breakdance battles, have a competitive context. Several studies have suggested that, in this competitive context, performers actively interact with each other and construct some correspondence. Moreover, a few recent studies focusing on competitive conversations, such as debates, have shown that, compared to people's interactions in collaborative conversations, people in competitive contexts frequently coordinate their behaviors in complicated ways. However, the interaction and coordination among performers in these competitive contexts have not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, we investigated the coordination of expert breakdancers in battle scenes and measured their rhythmic movements using a motion capture system. We calculated the relative phase of the rhythmic movements between two dancers to investigate their coordination. The results showed that the dancers' rhythmic movements tended to synchronize in an anti-phase fashion, which means that there were similarities as well as differences between the two dancers' rhythmic movements. Furthermore, this pattern of coordination changed dynamically as time elapsed, from an in-phase synchronization or leader-follower relationships to an anti-phase synchronization and then leader-follower relationships.Lead, Apr. 2021, Frontiers in psychology, 12, 635534 - 635534, English, No password, International magazine[Refereed]Scientific journal

It is frequently mentioned that a unique interpretation that is different from daily-life interpretation arises in the cognitive process of art activity. People can interpret not only artworks but non-art objects in an artistic way, and they can often discover some new aspects of daily objects and their own viewpoints through this interpretation process. Bringing new viewpoints to our daily lives through art activity seems to be an essential issue in the art education field, connecting art activity to people's everyday lives. In this study, we investigated this reinterpretation process of a non-art object in detail. We expected that the activation of prior knowledge about art of the participant would influence the interpretation of a non-art object. We conducted a between-subjects experiment to investigate this process. We set two types of conditions to manipulate participants' artistic context. For participants in the experimental group, we assigned the task "to find some objects which you can think of as artwork" to activate participants' prior knowledge about art. For participants in the control group, the task was "to find some objects whose names begin with a given letter." The results suggest that the activation of prior knowledge about art influenced and facilitated the interpretation process of non-art objects.

- Designing a creative dance program for non-dance majorsWhat is the process of dance creation? How can we encourage undergraduates (non-dance majors) to acquire creativity through such an artistic, creative process? This study tries to answer these questions. In Japanese undergraduate liberal arts education, there is a need for expressive and creative activities involving human emotions and the human body (Okada, 2014). For this study, in the summer semester of 2015, we designed a creative dance course in collaboration with a professional choreographer to improve undergraduates' awareness of themselves, others and their surroundings, and to promote communication skills that are important for both dance creation and everyday life. We analyzed its educational effects using four types of data: students' response papers, evaluations of students' dance performances, questionnaires administered at the beginning and end of the course, and follow-up interviews conducted three to five months after the course. The results showed that the students enjoyed creative dance and became aware of their own bodies and feelings and those of other students. The students were able to appreciate and consider academic and everyday themes and communication from different perspectives. In conclusion, our creative dance course has the potential to foster students' awareness and communication skills and to improve their daily lives and academic pursuits.Nova Science Publishers, Inc., Jan. 2017, Art and Design Education: Perspectives, Challenges and Opportunities, 71 - 102, EnglishIn book
- Recently, as art museums are being focused as a learning place, curators are expected to encourage these educational activities. This paper aims to clarify the curators' attitudes towards education in Japan, through the questionnaire survey.ART EDUCATION SCIETY OF JAPAN, Dec. 2015, Art Education, 2015(299) (299), 26 - 34, Japanese, No password
After describing aims and methods of this paper in chapter 1 and 2, Chapter 3 examines profiles of curators. In chapter 4, through factor analysis of the curators' attitudes towards education, we found following three factors; focus points in educational activity, expectations on visitors' learning, and consciousness on changes of their own. And in Chapter 5, through multiple linear regression analysis, relationship of curators' profiles and their attitudes towards education are examined.
These analysis show that curators are developing their knowledge and methods on education through trial and error, being affected by people around them.[Refereed]Scientific journal - Lead, Jul. 2015, Proceedings of the 37th Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society, 2152 - 2157, English, No passwordDeliberate Practice Revisited: Complexity and Creativity in the Practice Process in Breakdance[Refereed]International conference proceedings

We conducted 1) literature surveys of current and past STEAM practices in universities in Japan and abroad, and 2) design-based research of STEAM practices in a university. We found that research on art courses in higher education in the U.S. was not sufficient. In such STEAM education, art only takes complementary roles for STEM, indicating that the aspects of embodiment and affection of the arts are rarely implemented. Furthermore, we discussed the principles of social education facilities, sensitivity, empathy, and higher education institutions' role in lifelong learning. We also implemented three visual and performing arts courses. Each of them combines a literature review and artistic creation practice to foster understanding of academic concepts through thinking and physical/emotional experiences. We are currently analyzing the data. We also have published a book.

We selected the street dance as the target domain and investigated the interaction process among multiple experts and that among experts and intermediates/novices. The results suggested that the expert dancers shared their expressions and essential features of their expressions through the observation and communication with other experts. The experts developed their unique expressions by focusing on the attractive features of expressions of other experts. Also, through observation and communication with experts, the novice/intermediates could facilitate the learning of expressions. The experts also developed their original expressions by focusing on the unique features of expressions of novices/intermediates. The collaboration with other dancers in multi-level facilitated the processes of learning and expertise development in the art domain.
