- This study investigated L2 learners’ perception changes at each stage of online collaborative writing. Previous studies revealed the familiarity of L2 collaborative learning with Information and Communication Technology (ICT), whereas few described at which stage of the learning process L2 learners’ perceptions change. Therefore, this study examines how the learners’ attitudes and perceptions change at certain phases of collaborative learning and whether these changes affect the success or failure of their L2 collaborative learning. This study analyzed two questionnaire surveys before and after the learning activity, observed the collaborative learning processes via visualization tools, and conducted semi-structured interviews for participants to reflect on their learning processes and perceptions of collaborative writing. The mixed research analyses demonstrate that advancing a particular stage leads to the learners’ linguistic awareness and the shift of their attitudes more positively. The findings show the factors and stages determining the success of L2 online collaborative learning.Research-publishing.net, Dec. 2022, Short papers from EUROCALL 2022, 147 - 153, English, No password[Refereed]In book
- Abstract This study aims to examine the effectiveness of image-schema-oriented visual aids to cohesively process the semantic information of English (L2) phrasal verbs (PVs), leading to the proper understanding of their senses. As previous studies suggested the advantage of image-schema-based L2 vocabulary learning, our study hypothesizes that image-schema-oriented visual aids in a multimedia environment can develop the motivated semantic networks of L2 PVs, leading to their successful processing and comprehension. To verify the hypothesis, we administered two empirical studies to Japanese undergraduates learning with image-schema-oriented visual aids. Although they were administered in different settings, both studies showed that the participants could obtain significant learning gains, especially figurative meanings. This finding suggests that the use of image-schema-oriented aids could successfully process semantic information of L2 PVs enough to develop a motivated semantic network and reconfirm the significance of image schema in terms of enhancing learners’ metaphoric competence.John Benjamins Publishing Company, Dec. 2022, Cognitive Linguistic Studies, 9(2) (2), 202 - 222, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Abstract The present study aims to verify the impact of dynamic aids on learning L2 prepositions in relation to individual learner variables. Situated within the cognitive linguistics (CL) framework and differing from previous research, the present study hypothesizes that dynamic (animated) aids are not equally effective for all learners; rather, their effectiveness differs according to learners’ first languages (L1s) (Chinese or Japanese) and information-processing styles (verbalizers or imagers). To verify this hypothesis, we utilized learning materials comprised of static and dynamic images for three English spatial prepositions (above, on, over). After conducting a Style of Processing questionnaire, we administered three cloze tests (pretest, posttest, and delayed posttest) of target words to Taiwanese and Japanese participants (N = 109), whose L1s differed in terms of their linguistic proximity to English. Although no significant differences were found between the treatment groups in tests for all participants, the results were differentiated by individual factors. In results of a two-way ANOVA, Taiwanese participants showed significantly greater improvement from the pretest to posttest than Japanese participants when the participants used dynamic images, whereas the Japanese group made more learning gains from the posttest to the delayed posttest test. Moreover, imagers obtained more benefits from the visual aids, whether static or dynamic, than verbalizers. Our findings indicate that CL-based visual aids are beneficial and that individual factors, especially learners’ L1, may produce different learning effects, especially in multimedia environments.Lead, Cambridge University Press (CUP), May 2022, ReCALL, 34(2) (2), 201 - 217, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- This study investigates the effectiveness of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) speaker as a device used for interactions in a foreign language (L2), and a tracking eye installed on the speaker to reduce L2 anxiety. L2 anxiety is an urgent issue since the anxiety derived from a fear of being judged, being negatively evaluated, or being rejected by others is hindering active L2 use. Our study hypothesizes that the question–response functions of the AI speakers would encourage L2 learners to input and output a considerable amount of L2 without the feeling of anxiety toward the speakers. We then asked eight Japanese undergraduates to conduct daily L2 interactions with the speakers in their homes for one month. The findings from pre-and post-listening tests, questionnaire surveys, and interviews revealed that intelligence speakers – Google Home (GH) – could enhance the learners’ L2 motivations, gave them positive impressions, and helped eradicate their anxiety toward L2 interactions.Research-publishing.net, Dec. 2020, CALL for widening participation: short papers from EUROCALL 2020, 88 - 95, English, No password[Refereed]In book

- The first of three case studies in this book addresses online interaction in EFL with smartphones via LINE, a communication tool that is free and familiar to Japanese students. This chapter introduces two kinds of group interactions aimed to accord with both sociocultural theory and the psychological contours of students in the instructor’s culture. First, learners wrote L2 messages and posted them on a closed group board in LINE. In the second experiment, a bot instantly and automatically translated L1 messages they posted into L2. After their one-month interactions, both groups showed improvement of their English language competence in both receptive and productive skills. The results of the questionnaire also proclaimed their active participation with positive feedback about the L2 online interaction.Springer Singapore, 2017, Implementing Mobile Language Learning Technologies in Japan, 33 - 56, English, International magazine, Co-authored internationally[Refereed]In book
- This chapter provides a theoretical framework for mobile language learning from a sociocultural perspective. While the advantages of personal computers over previous modes have been discussed in terms of e-learning, m-learning with mobile devices opens up new horizons that can enhance user-centered learning. Characteristics of mobile devices such as ownership and mobility can help to personalize language learning. For instance, generating target language contents from learners’ life-worlds can help to develop the autonomy and agency required for effective learning in this era of new technology. This chapter reviews the literature important for mobile language learning with the aim of applying the theoretical framework to pedagogies in local settings as seen in the following chapters.Springer Singapore, 2017, Implementing Mobile Language Learning Technologies in Japan, 19 - 32, English, International magazine[Refereed]In book

- In spite of the vast amount of teaching and learning materials of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) with new media such as moving image, few discussions have been made concerning the significance of new media in making EFL materials; especially concerning which media can facilitate which language item. This paper, therefore, will address this issue by examining English polysemous words with the representation of their image schema I shall begin my paper by examining the importance of image schema in learning English polysemous words, from a theoretical perspective; then I shall show pedagogical examples of better presentation of image schema through moving image. Finally I shall address the necessity of further research on this issue.Japan Society for Information and Media Studies, Mar. 2004, 情報メディア研究, 2(1) (1), 57 - 62, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal
- The Effectiveness of the Combination of Verbal Explanation with Imagery as Electronic Glosses from the Perspective of Second Vocabulary Acquisition; In the case of Spatial Polysemous Words. Many kinds of multimedia dictionaries have recently been made, because of the great contribution of dictionaries as glosses for second or foreign language learners. However, it would appear that many electronic glosses have not necessarily made effective use of this advantage, taking into account the following perspectives: little attention to the contributions that electronic glosses can make; and to the stage in the language learning process the gloss is best used. The aim of this essay, therefore, is to clear up these issues to make better electronic glosses from the perspective of second language vocabulary learning, especially spatial polysemous words such as prepositions by way of pointing out the advantage of visual presentation of their image schemata containing motional image, which is difficult to represent in print-based glosses. The Open University of Japan, Oct. 2003, Media and Education, 11, 9 - 25, English[Refereed]

Daily life with autonomous robots will become common. However, it is not clear that people and the robots can live together. We studied the mechanism that they are embraced as a member of human-community and necessary behaviors, therefore. We conducted an English pedagogical robot experiment for a month. Although the participants did not get a better grade, they gained confidence. Furthermore, we revealed people expand action space to the collaborative worker.

Competitive research funding

The present research indicated that within a ubiquitous environment, mobile learning and digital text played an important role in improving the efficacy of English education and student motivation. Flipped learning for 27 3rd-year students majoring in economics focused on the practice of presentations and interactions in the classroom. Meanwhile, outside of class the students diligently prepared for their assigned tasks using mobile technologies. Results showed that through exposure to the mobile learning materials with Quizlet, the students experienced a nearly 20% improvement in their OPIC speaking test scores in oral proficiency. Students also exhibited great progress in improving their mean TOEIC score from 623 to 784. Overall, the active and flipped learning activities contributed as important factors in the improvement of English proficiency and autonomous learning.

Our consecutive studies revealed that the individual factors differentiated their learning effects especially in comprehension of literal senses of the target polysemous prepositions and phrasal verbs whereas the comprehension and production of their metaphorical meanings were enhanced by the applications we developed regardless of their individual factors. The findings demonstrate that cognitive-loaded learning processes were facilitated by multimodal learning materials. A series of our studies have been presented at domestic and international conferences, and publicized as articles in international journals or chapters in a book.

- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, 2010 - 2012, Principal investigatorThe aim of our study is to explore the optimization of multimedia-mediated learning of English as a foreign language. It has been examined by developing applications to comprehend semantic structure of spatial prepositions with imagery annotations and to recall the meanings of the target vocabulary with time-control functions. The findings through our research are as follows: 1) learning with imagery annotations could enhance better text comprehension through reading and listening activities than learning without it, but no difference was found between the 3D animations and still pictures; 2) learning with an iPod application for learning certain target vocabulary with time-control function to encourage quick recall of the word meanings could enhance not only quicker recall of the meanings but also better text comprehension through reading activities. The studies based on these findings have been presented in several domestic and international conferences and published as academic papers in several international journals. Taking into consideration our examination of the impact of multimedia in practical settings and our findings which show multimedia functions we explored such as visual annotations and time-control function could lead to better text comprehension through reading or listening activities, our study might be regarded as successful.Competitive research funding
