- This study aimed to clarify the composition of the phases (acceleration, full sprint, and velocity endurance) in the 50-m sprint as performed by elementary school students, focusing on changes in running velocity. The subjects were 169 boys and 178 girls in the first to sixth grades of elementary school, who performed a 50-m sprint from a standing start. Running velocity was measured using a laser distance meter, which was synchronized with a video camera that recorded the entire sprint. It was found that the running time of the total sprint was significantly shorter and that maximal velocity was significantly higher for higher-grade than for lower-grade students. The distances of the acceleration phase and full sprint phase were significantly longer for higher-grade than for lower-grade students, but there was no significant difference in the duration of these phases by grade. However, both the distance and duration of the velocity endurance phase were significantly shorter for higher-grade than for lower-grade students. Step length in the acceleration, full sprint, and velocity endurance phases was longer for higher-grade than for lower-grade students. However, step frequency at each phase tended to be almost equal or slightly lower for higher-grade than for lower-grade students. The SL index for higher-grade boys tended to be higher than for lower-grade boys. However, for girls, there was little difference in the SL index at each phase for second-grade students or above. Taken together, the results indicate that the velocity endurance phase comprises the majority of the 50-m sprint when performed by lower-grade students. However, for higher-grade students, the velocity endurance phase is shorter due to the relative increases in the acceleration and sprint phases. This suggests that the distance of the acceleration and full sprint phases affects the distance and duration of the velocity endurance phase. 61(2) (2), 797 - 813, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

For several decades, factory automation or unmanned factory productivity has been progressed to realize much higher productivity in manufacturing. However, human centered manufacturing system is getting attention to realize much more flexibility for manufacturing of wide product variety and volume. So it is necessary to provide the safe and efficient environment to workers considering their own physical properties. This study investigated a mechanism of muscle fatigue and proposed a muscular fatigue model to evaluate muscle fatigue progress under several muscular force patterns. Previous studies have already proposed a muscular fatigue model. However, these previous studies discussed about the condition of maximum voluntary contraction. The new point of this study is considering several muscular force patterns including muscle recovery progress. This study proposed the method to estimate the endurance times for keeping constant forces considering the physical characteristics. This study also proposed the method to estimate the iteration numbers for keeping constant forces with interval. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, experimental verifications were conducted. The experimental results had a good agreement with the evaluation of muscle fatigue progress using the proposed method although it is necessary to consider the method to raise the precision of determining the physical parameters and the method to decrease the dispersion of experiments derived from the subjective judgement of participants. Success of resolving these issues will provide ergonomically safe and efficient working environments considering the physical properties of each worker.

- Whether by accident or foul play virtually thousands of fall-related fatalities occur each year. While a number of past studies addressed the relationship between falls, injury, and death, only a small fraction sought to establish an objective index geared specifically towards determining the cause of a particular fall. The primary objective in the present study was to determine the range of attainable horizontal distances in various forms of active and passive falling patterns. The secondary objective involved the capturing of physical motions at the point of impact via 3D motion analyses in order to identify the defining physical characteristics of a particular form of fall. The introduction of live test subjects to these series of experiments added the advent of fear and other psychological factors to the study which are crucial in simulating real-life cases. To corroborate this point, five subjects (three male and two female) expressed their wishes to withdraw from the study, attributing their decision to feeling an inherent danger and fear of the physical aspects of the present study. The ten subjects were made to fall from a height of 3.65 m under 13 conditions of various natures. Footage of the subjects falling was captured on two high-speed video cameras which markedly improved the calculation of 3D coordinates along the subjects' flight path. After extensive calculations, we were successful in determining the maximum attainable horizontal distances in passive falling patterns. Additionally, we found that force applied to the abdominal area results in shorter horizontal distances in comparison to falls where force is directly applied to the posterior side of the body.Jan. 2011, International journal of legal medicine, 125(1) (1), 1 - 10, English, International magazine[Refereed]Scientific journal

- When coming off the blocks at the start of a sprint running race, the athlete accelerates from a static state to maximum sprinting speed. Therefore, knowing how to increase power off the starting block is important. In the present study, the forces applied to starting blocks by sprinters were measured. From starting blocks, six sprinters did the "starting dash" as is done in a sprint running race, and the forces applied to the right and left starting block as well as to the ground during the first step were measured with force plates. As a result, no large difference was observed between the sprinters in terms of the force applied to the back block. However, the force applied to the front block differed between the sprinters, suggesting that the force applied by the front foot possibly affects performance during the "starting dash". Moreover, the force applied to the ground during the first step indicated that there is a possible relation between the forces of the first step and the force applied to the starting block by the front foot. In addition, it was observed that the sprinters applied a force in the right or left direction when the foot struck the ground. Considering these results, further investigation of the effects of step width is necessary. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, Mar. 2010, 陸上競技研究, 第80号・pp.44-50, 287 - 291, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- The purpose of this study was to compare the movement characteristics and intermittent exercise pattern in five ball games: basketball, handball, soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse. In the respective events, six to twelve male college players in Division I were chosen as subjects, and their movement distances and velocities were measured using two-dimensional direct linear transformation (DLT).Japanese Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences, Jun. 2009, 体育学研究, 第54巻 第1号pp.99-106(1) (1), 99 - 106, Japanese
The main results were as follows:
1. Movement distances during the first half were the longest in soccer, followed in order by field hockey, handball, basketball, and lacrosse. However, the movement distance per playing time in each game was longer in field hockey and lacrosse than in the others.
2. The rates of low-velocity movement were higher in basketball and soccer, and those of high-velocity movements were higher in handball and lacrosse, than in the others.
3. Mean movement durations during low-velocity and high-velocity movements were: basketball 2.78 and 0.64 s; handball 3.54 and 0.67 s; soccer 6.67 and 1.33 s; field hockey 3.70 and 0.96 s; and lacrosse 2.67 and 1.05 s.
These results clarified the characteristics of intermittent exercise patterns in each event. In basketball, there were many changes in movement velocity and direction, but the subjects hardly reached top speed. In handball, there was alternation between brief high-velocity movements and prolonged low-velocity movements. In soccer, movement duration was longer, and the mean velocity during low-velocity movement was faster than in the other events. In field hockey, in both low- and high-velocity movements, velocity and duration were comparatively fast and long, respectively. In lacrosse, players performed prolonged high-velocity movement in the field, and took sufficient recovery in the bench area.[Refereed]Scientific journal - When analyzing the swing of a baseball bat, important characteristics include the baseball bat's center of gravity, moment of inertia, length and mass. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of the mass and the center of gravity of a swinging baseball bat. An experimental bat was designed, which provided twenty-five conditions for the mass and center of gravity. The knob of the experimental bat was equipped with accelerometers, which measured the three linear and three angular components of an acceleration applied to the bat. The subjects were trained five baseball players. The six components of acceleration were measured with the experimental bat under twentyfive conditions of the mass and center of gravity. The bat mass and center of gravity had an effect on the linear and angular acceleration during bat swing. Thus, it is necessary to consider the bat characteristics that suit each player. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2009, The Proceedings of Joint Symposium: Symposium on Sports Engineering, Symposium on Human Dynamics, 2009, 28 - 33, Japanese

- The analysis and clarification of man's physical properties are very important in the field of sport and welfare engineering. The results of these analysis and clarification contribute to the improvement of physical ability, the prevention of injury in sports, the effective rehabilitation and the evaluation of dynamic load in daily life. The solid body link model, which has been used for the analysis on human body performance, can estimate the force and torque which acts on each joint from the recorded human motion. However, the muscle functionality is not considered in the solid body link model. In order to evaluate the muscular power during human motion, the human musculo-skeletal model considering bi-articular muscle function is required. In this study, the basic two dimensional musculo-skeletal model of man's lower limb was constructed and the muscular power of each effective muscle was estimated from the recorded human motion. The lower limbs muscular power in vertical jump is estimated to verify the musculo-skeltal model constructed. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2008, The Proceedings of Joint Symposium: Symposium on Sports Engineering, Symposium on Human Dynamics, 2008, 335 - 340, Japanese

- The present study investigated the effects of pitch trajectory on batting swing. Balls of various trajectories were pitched to a professional baseball player and his batting motion was analyzed by the three-dimensional direct linear transformation (DLT) method. Acceleration applied to the bat during the swing was measured by installed accelerometers. Results were as follows: 1) Pitched balls with an inside trajectory had an impact point closer to the pitcher, while balls pitched with an outside trajectory had an impact point closer to the catcher. 2) Although the position of the bat at the point of impact changed for different pitch trajectories, there were no significant differences in the position of the waist or shoulder. The motion of the body during the batting swing, excepting the arms, was not affected by differences in pitch trajectory. 3) Ball pitched to waist height were hit with a higher bat head speed, resulting in a greater post-impact flight distance. 4) Batters appeared to adjust their batting swing to the pitch trajectory just prior to impact. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2007, The Proceedings of Joint Symposium: Symposium on Sports Engineering, Symposium on Human Dynamics, 2007, 103 - 107, Japanese
- The "turbo-jav" is used in the javelic throw as an introduction to the javelin throw or as a technical tool with which to practice the javelin throw. The present study investigated the flight characteristics of the turbo-jav. The javelic throws of 50 junior high school and university students were measured. Each thrower was videotaped using two high-speed video cameras during while throwing the turbo-jav. Each condition of release of the turbo-jav was measured using the 3-dimensional DLT method. The results revealed a significant positive correlation between initial velocity and throwing distance in the javelic throw. A comparison of turbo-jav and javelin throws indicated that the throwing distance was not small even when the angle of attack is large. When the turbo-jav is thrown, the actual throwing distance is smaller than the theoretical throwing distance without air. In other words, the flight characteristics indicate that the flight of the turbo-jav in the javelic throw differs from that of a thrown javelin. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2007, The Proceedings of Joint Symposium: Symposium on Sports Engineering, Symposium on Human Dynamics, 2007, 234 - 238, Japanese
- Flat water racing canoe is performed on the long straight course. Therefore, analysis of the change of paddling as a whole canoe race is difficult. To be able to analyze canoe paddling as whole race, measuring paddle acceleration system was developed. And the purpose of this study was to define relation to paddling motion and acceleration of paddle. Experiment was done with 3 subjects. Subjects rowed with measuring acceleration of paddle and paddling motion of subjects was shot by high speed video at the same time. 3 axis liner accelerations and 3 axis angular accelerations of the paddle were calculated by signals of 4 accelerometers in paddle. And an image by high speed video was used for motion analysis. As a result, Phases of paddling was guessed by acceleration patterns of paddle. Thus, measuring acceleration of paddle can analyze change of paddling as a whole canoe race. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2007, The Proceedings of Joint Symposium: Symposium on Sports Engineering, Symposium on Human Dynamics, 2007, 385 - 390, Japanese

- The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the mass and the position of center of gravity of a baseball bat on its hitting performance. Twelve skilled baseball players were used in the study. A bat was developed for which the mass and position of center of gravity could be adjusted. In this experiment nine different settings for the position of the center of gravity and the mass were used. The motion of the bat during swings was analyzed by the DLT method using two cameras, and three-dimensional kinematic data were calculated for the impact with the ball and during the hitting process. The main results are summarized as follows: 1) For all the baseball players, the head velocity of the bat at impact was large, so that the position of the bat's center of gravity was near to the grip. 2) For all the baseball players, the bat mass did not affect the head velocity of the bat at impact. 3) For all the baseball players, a significant negative correlation was found between the moment of inertia about the grip circumference of the bat and the head velocity at impact. 4) In one case, the mass of the bat had a significant influence on the angular velocity on impact for a player that had a translational swing. In this case, the characteristic of the swing type was shown to result in different hitting performances. When choosing a suitable bat for each player, the critical factor is the swing style of the player, which could be gauged from the mass and the position of the center of gravity of the bat. This finding suggests that the moment of inertia of the bat's circumference could be used as an index. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2006, The Proceedings of Joint Symposium: Symposium on Sports Engineering, Symposium on Human Dynamics, 2006, 98 - 103, Japanese
- The purpose of this study was to evaluate the canoe paddling on the flat water racing during a canoe race. It was provide the paddle install four accelerometers to measure the acceleration applied to the paddle. Experiment was done with subjects rowing 500m at the race speed and measuring acceleration of paddle and showed the following results. (1) The change of acceleration by each paddling showed same results for each subjects. On the other hand, each subjects paddling were different and showed unique change. (2) The time of one cycle of paddling got longer during the race and this showed paddling motion gradually got slower. (3) Liner acceleration didn't change much throughout a race. But angular acceleration decreased throughout a race. These resulted that paddling motion to liner direction changed less but rotary motion of paddling changed small throughout a race. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2006, The Proceedings of Joint Symposium: Symposium on Sports Engineering, Symposium on Human Dynamics, 2006, 32 - 37, Japanese

- The present research aimed to characterize the baseball bat swings of high-school baseball players. Despite the difficulties associated with establishing a classification standard for the quantitative evaluation of bat swings, the acceleration applied to the bat was measured during high-school baseball players' swings. Classification of players' swings based on bat acceleration revealed the following results. (1) Evaluation of players' swings based on the acceleration applied to the bat was possibe. This evaluation clarified methods for applying force and torque to the bat during a swing. (2) Based on changes in acceleration and the angular acceleration applied to the bat just before impact, the swings of these players were classified into nine categories. (3) These nine categories were further consolidated into three types based on changes in angular acceleration. In one type, angular acceleration of the bat decreases before impact. However, all subjects were divided into the remaining two types, in which angular acceleration of the bat increases before impact or angular acceleration of the bat does not increase before impact. These results suggest that classification of bat swings is possible. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2005, The Proceedings of Joint Symposium: Symposium on Sports Engineering, Symposium on Human Dynamics, 2005, 14 - 19, Japanese

- The present paper presents a new sensor for measuring six components of force and two components of deflection applied to a javelin. Two types of javelin differing in stiffness were thrown by three javelin throwers. The force and the deflection applied to the Javelin during throwing were measured to analyze the throwing motion and the dynamic behavior of the javelin. The major results obtained were as follows; The force in the axial direction of the javelin falls or remains unchanged temporary just before the value reaches its peak during release. The torque around the axial direction of the javelin tends to fall to aminimum value and then reach a peak. The change of force in the lateral direction of the javelin is roughly dominated by that in one direction. The deflection of the javelin during throwing is not one-directional as reciprocation, but multidirectional. In order to consider the force applied to the javelin and the deflection of the javelin form the viewpoint of the thrower, it is necessary to consider the rotation around the axial direction of the javelin as well. The value of deflection of the javelin is affected by its stiffiness. However appears that the stiffness dose not affect the values and patterns of force and torque applied to the javelin.Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences, Nov. 1997, 4, 270p-282p(4) (4), 270 - 282, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Kinetic analysis of javelin throwing has been a difficult subject, because the force applied to javelins is unknown and javelins are originally elastic. Therefore, a javelin with a 6-component force transducer is developed in the present reserch. The javelin is equipped with a thin pipe at the gripping position, and the pipe has elastic hinges to mesure the force by utilizing strain gages. The six components of the force applied to the javelin by one male javelin thrower is measured using the force transducer. The major results obtained are as follows; The javelin with the transducer is heavier in weight, and smaller in moment of inertia and in lower compliance at the grip as compared to the ordinary javelins. The measuring system developed is found to be satisfactory to measure the forces in javelin throw, since the relation between the measured voltages and applied forces is linear, and the resonant frequency of the transducer is higher than that of the force measured during actual javelin throw. As a result of a measuering experiment, the force components change mainly from the moment when the thrower stepped his right foot on the ground to release the javelin after run and crossover-step. The peeks of the force components apeared just before the release, and the maximum values are 14.00 kgf in the axial direction of the javelin, 7.21 kgf, 4.62 kgf in the lateral directions, 0.12 kgf・m around the axial direction, and 0.64 kgf・m, 0.77 kgf・m around the lateral directions.Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences, 1994, Taiikugaku kenkyu (Japan Journal of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences), 39(2) (2), 109 - 117, Japanese

- A-12 The influence of different speed running on ground contactThe purpose of this study was to be found whether the ground contact motion is how to change when changing stage of running velocity. The subjects were the track and field club of 6 people in university. In this experiment, there was the shoe sole had been processed the thickness and inserted the sensor sheet which can measure the foot pressure. The subjects ran 10 to fifty-meters; subjectively increasing 10 stage of running velocity. The results were as follows. 1) With the increase running velocity, impulse in the ground contact were decreased. 2) With the increase running velocity, the ground contact time was shortened by the time until maximum 2 value was shortened. 3) After the ground contact, the center of foot pressure once moved rearward and then moved frontward. Also, with the increase running velocity, the moving distance from the rearward to the frontward was shorter gradually. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 30 Oct. 2015, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2015, "A - 12-1"-"A-12-7", Japanese
- C-18 Strategy for accurate throw focusing on trajectory of free throw in basketballThe purpose of this study was to elucidate strategy for accurate throw by focusing on trajectory of free throw in basketball. The subjects were the six skilled basketball players belonging to a university basketball club and the recreational basketball player. The subjects were required to sink a free throw. The behavior of the thrown ball was recorded by four normal-speed video cameras placed beside the shooter and analyzed using the three-dimensional direct linear transformation method. The results were as follows: 1) Initial velocity ranged 0.2 to 0.6 m/s, and release angle ranged 3 to 9 degrees. This result differed from previous research. Then, it is necessary to consider including not only initial velocity and release angle, but also release point. 2) All subjects tended to change release point forward as the distance to the ring increased. In order to increase initial velocity, it is thought to push the ball longer and carry the ball in a straight line. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 30 Oct. 2015, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2015, "C - 18-1"-"C-18-8", Japanese
- C-7 Characteristics of a Regulation Wooden JavelinIn this study, a wooden javelin that conformed to the current length and weight regulations for javelin throw competitions was produced, and various characteristics were measured and compared with those for javelins of three other materials measured in a previous study. The reproduced wooden javelin was confirmed to not differ from the other javelins in shape, weight, position of the center of gravity, or relative size of each part, thus meeting current regulations for javelin throw competitions. The moment of inertia about the short axis through the center of gravity for the wooden javelin was much smaller than that for the other javelins. The resonant frequency of the wooden javelin at the first mode was much lower than that of the other javelins, but the compliance at the loop and the tail and the position of the node were not dramatically different between the wooden javelin and the other javelins. Compared with the other javelins, the wooden javelin had much lower static bending stiffness and bent more than the others by far, by approximately 3-fold. Furthermore, in javelins used for competitions, the relationship where the resonant frequency at the first mode is low such that the static bending stiffness is large was applicable to the wooden javelin. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 29 Oct. 2014, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2014, "C - 7-1"-"C-7-10", Japanese
- C-10 Accuracy of the direct free-kick for hitting the target in soccer : Focusing on the difference of kick pointThe purpose of this study was to elucidate techniques for kicking along various trajectories in direct free kicks from various point in soccer. The subjects were the four skilled soccer players belonging to a university soccer club. The subjects were required to hit each of 4 targets at various combinations of heights and positions in the goal (3.5 m left, and 3.5 m right from the center of goal aria; 1.2 m, and 2.2 m from the ground) behind a screen positioned 9.15 m in front of the kicker. The performances were recorded by six normal-speed video cameras. The behavior of the kicked ball was recorded by two normal-speed video cameras placed behind the kicker and two other normal-speed video cameras placed beside the kicker and analyzed using the three-dimensional direct linear transformation method. The fifth video camera was placed facing the kicker to capture variables related to ball rotation. The sixth video camera was placed beside the kicker to capture when the ball was kicked. The results were as follows: 1) In X-axis, initial direction of the ball just after being kicked is the most important parameter for every subjects and conditions to hit the target. 2) In Z-axis, not only initial direction of the ball just after being kicked but also other parameters about rotation are the important parameter for some subjects and conditions to hit the target. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 29 Oct. 2014, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2014, "C - 10-1"-"C-10-9", Japanese
- A-16 Experimental study on the variation in leg motion at landing according to running velocityThe purpose of this study was to examine foot grounding by investigating how ground reaction forces and leg motions at grounding vary as velocities increase from walking through sprinting speeds. The participants were 3 male university students. They moved along a 12 m straight course at 6 velocities from walking to sprinting, and stepped on a force platform along the way. Three high-speed cameras synchronized to a video counter recorded their legs and feet as they moved. The velocities of movements and motion parameters were calculated by two-dimensional direct linear transformation method. The results were as follows. (1) The tendency for toe grounding increased with greater velocity. (2) As the tendency for toe grounding increased, the grounding time became shorter and the leg swing velocity increased. (3) At grounding, the knee joint angle decreased with increasing velocity. Regardless of the movement velocity, the ankle joint angle was 90° to 100°.The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 29 Oct. 2014, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2014, "A - 16-1"-"A-16-7", Japanese
- 118 Effect of various thrown baseball trajectories on the bat impact point in baseballThis study examined the impact of different trajectories of a thrown baseball on batting accuracy, and discusses the actions taken by the batter that affected the accuracy of the impact. Seven university baseball players hit baseballs thrown in various trajectories, and four synchronized high-speed video cameras were used to record the hits. The movement of the bat, ball, and batter's body were analyzed by three-dimensional direct linear transformation. The results of the analysis were as follows: 1) The point of impact between the ball and the bat varied according to the ball's trajectory, suggesting that maintaining a constant impact point on the bat is difficult. 2) Batters compensated for changes in ball trajectory mainly by altering the rotation angle of the hips and shoulders. Especially for inside or high trajectories, larger hip and shoulder rotations were necessary, allowing batters to begin the batting motion earlier. 3) Batters needed to actively judge the ball's trajectory, which gave them less time to execute their swing. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 01 Nov. 2013, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2013, "118 - 1"-"118-10", Japanese
- 104 A study on the role of the starting block in the crouch startIn this study, the functional role of starting blocks in the sprint start was examined. Participants were 6 sprinters (height: 175.8±5.0 cm; weight: 69.2±4.0 kg; personal best 100 m time: 10.65±0.13 s) who performed two kinds of sprint starts: a crouch start with starting blocks (BS), and a crouch start without starting blocks (CS). During block clearance, two force plates were used to measure the force applied to the front and rear starting blocks (in BS) or to the ground (in CS). The force plates were placed under each block (in BS) or under the participant's feet (in CS). The ground reaction force of the first and second step after block clearance was measured using another two force plates. The sampling frequency for these measurements was 1 kHz, and kinematic data were recorded using four high-speed cameras at 250 frames/s. The horizontal impulse applied to the rear block in BS was greater than that applied by the rear foot in CS; the horizontal impulse applied to both starting blocks in BS was greater than the horizontal impulse in CS. The vertical impulse applied to both starting blocks in BS was lower than the vertical impulse in CS, and the duration of force application to both starting blocks in BS was shorter than the duration of force application in CS. Taken together, starting blocks enable a greater horizontal impulse to be applied in a shorter time during block clearance, compared with no starting blocks. Therefore, the starting block can be regarded as an essential tool for enhancing sprint start performance. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 01 Nov. 2013, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2013, "104 - 1"-"104-10", Japanese
- 214 The effect of walking shoes heel construction on walking motionThe purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of curving sole shoes to walking motion. The subjects were eight female university students (age: 19.3± 1.5 yrs, height: 159.3 ± 2.4cm, weight: 54.2 ± 4.3 kg). They walked about 6 meter on walk course with three kinds shoes and barefoot. The motion is simultaneously recorded by three High speed cameras (125fps) and two force platform. The results are as follows. The angle of ankle joint is decreased curving sole shoes compared with another two shoes. The phase of foot flat time of curving sole shoes is shorter than another. The kick phase became longer, and kick force became larger. The heel contact distance of curving sole shoes became near body. Curving sole shoes produced changes and trends in kinetic and kinematic characteristics that seemed to be advantageously for the walking motion. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 14 Nov. 2012, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2012, 246 - 250, Japanese
- 127 Characteristics of javelin made of composite materialsIn this study, the characteristics of the men's javelin were investigated in terms of its material in order to collect basic data about the required properties of the javelin. Made of various materials (composite materials: 7; steel: 5; duralumin: 8), 20 types of javelins were examined to assess the static characteristics of shape, center of gravity, and moment of inertia, as well as the characteristics of vibration and static bending stiffness. The properties of the composite javelins were clarified, and the effects of javelin material in a javelin throw competition are discussed. Although all the javelins had the same shape, for the composite javelins, wide scatter was observed in the values of the primary resonant frequency, the moment of inertia around the center of gravity, and the compliance at the position of the loop. Therefore, the composite javelins have a pattern of various mass distributions. Further, the composite javelins were stiffer than the steel and duralumin javelins, and exhibited the characteristic that their vibration was easy to damp. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 14 Nov. 2012, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2012, 150 - 155, Japanese
- 211 The effects of forces applied to starting block at the block clearance on sprint startIn the sprint, the sprinters are required to use starting blocks at the crouch start. Therefore, it is important to clarify the effects of the forces applied to starting block at the block clearance on the sprint start. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the forces applied to starting block on the start movements. From starting blocks, a sprinter did three different "starting dash" as is done in a sprint running race (normal), pushing the starting block stronger (more), and pushing a little starting block (less) . The forces applied to the right and left starting block were measured by with the force plates(1kHz). And, the block clearance movement was recorded by Hi-speed camera (250Hz).The results can be summarized as follows. 1: Although the strength pushing the block is varied, impulses applied to the starting block did not change significantly. But it was inferred that the rear leg clearance movement and the block clearance time is related with adjusting the impulses applied to the starting block. 2: It was inferred that strength pushing the starting block affects the start movement as well as applying the force at the first and second step after the block clearance. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 14 Nov. 2012, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2012, 230 - 235, Japanese
- 230 The trajectory of baseballs pitched under game conditionsThe aim of this study was to describe, in detail, the trajectory of baseballs pitched under game conditions. In six games of a college baseball league, all balls thrown by the pitchers on each team were recorded by using two video cameras. The trajectories of pitched balls were calculated from the video data by a three-dimensional direct linear transformation method. The initial ball velocity, the variation of trajectories, and arrival position of pitched ball were calculated. The results were as follows. 1) Most pitchers threw types of pitches with two or three clearly different ball trajectories, but some pitchers did not. 2) Batters hit balls only in or near strike zone. When thrown a breaking ball, batters occasionally swung at balls below the strike zone. Batters must rapidly make an exact judge on the ball's trajectory, especially for low balls. 3) For some pitchers, the trajectory of fastballs was correlated with arrival position, which should be considered by batters 4) For some pitchers, the initial ball velocity or the vertical variation of trajectory decreased as the pitch count increased. However, this trend was not observed for pitchers who threw a complete game. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 14 Nov. 2012, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2012, 330 - 335, Japanese
- A18 Effect of different takeoff-angle on jumping motionThe purpose of this study is to investigate the effect on jumping motion in changing takeoff-angle. The subjects were two male university students (23yrs, 179.0cm, 74.8kg and 21yrs, 169.3cm, 66kg). They performed vertical jump and three kinds of takeoff-angle standing long jumps on a force platform. The motion is simultaneously recorded by a High speed camera (125fps). The results are as follows. The ankle joint angle is same in jumping motion between both subjects and every different takeoff-angle. The knee joint angle is different between subjects. Subject A changed the max flexion time in jumping motion, but subject B didn't change. As the subject jump lower, the knee joint torque is smaller, and the hip joint torque is larger. To change takeoff-angle, Subject A adjusts the timing of joint flexion, but subject B adjusts the different way from subject A.The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 30 Oct. 2011, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2011, 106 - 110, Japanese
- B33 A study on the starting techniques at the clearance from blocks on crouch startIn the sprint, the sprinters are required to use starting blocks at the crouch start. Therefore, it is important to clarify the technique of block clearance in order to improve sprint performance. The purpose of this study is to examine the technique of block clearance from joint torque and joint power in lower extremity applied to the starting blocks by sprinters. From starting blocks, six sprinters did the "starting dash" as is done in a sprint running race, and the forces applied to the right and left starting block were measured by with the force plates (1kHz). And, the block clearance movement was recorded by Hi-speed camera (250Hz). The results can be summarized as follows. There were two different patterns about the joint torque and power applied to the rear block. The type of pushing the rear block was presumed to have exhibited the extension torque and power at the hip and ankle of the rear leg. On the other hand, the type of pulling the rear leg from the rear block was presumed to have exhibited the flexion torque at the hip and the extension torque and power at the knee and ankle of the rear leg.The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 30 Oct. 2011, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2011, 412 - 417, Japanese
- C5 The effect on direction change movements of presence of selective reactionThis study aims to reveal the effect on motion and ground reaction force of presence of selective reaction in changing direction while running. The participants were instructed to make directional changes on a force plate on two conditions (With an advance instructions, or without). The motion was then studied by using three-dimensional motion analysis and force plate data. According to the results, the average value of all subjects had no significant trend. On the other hand, there are individual differences in the effect of giving instruction before trial Thus, that made difficult to see a clear trend in all subjects by these variations affect each other. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 30 Oct. 2011, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2011, 471 - 475, Japanese
- B11 Validation of muscle forces during standing long jumping estimated by a musculoskeletal model considering antagonistic muscles and biarticular musclesEstimation of muscle forces during human motions is important in the fields of sport, ergonomics and bioengineering in order to improve sport techniques, rehabilitation procedures, product designs and work environments, and so on. In general, in the musculoskeletal models that have been developed, the functions of antagonistic muscles and biarticular muscles are not considered to estimate muscle forces. In this study, a musculoskeletal model that considered the functions of the antagonistic muscles and biarticular muscles was investigated. In this model, muscles acting across the hip, knee and ankle joints were treated simultaneously. Furthermore, in this study, standing long jump as dynamic motion was conducted to validate the proposed model to estimate muscle forces. Surface electromyograms (EMGs) of tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius, soleus, rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, semimembranosus, biceps femoris and short head and gluteus maximus were measured to compare with the estimated muscle forces. The experimental results showed that the muscle forces estimated by the proposed method had a good agreement with the EMGs of muscles. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 30 Oct. 2011, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2011, 309 - 314, Japanese
- B34 Movement of Sprint Running on Curve in Elementary School ChildrenThe purpose of this study was to clarify characteristics of movement of sprint running on curve in elementary school children. 30 fifth or sixth grade children in elementary school participated in this study and they performed 50m sprint on curve (R=12.5m) and straight tracks. Children were divided into high-level group (n=10) and low-level group (n=10) based on 50m sprint time on straight track in this study. Children's sprint form on each track was filmed by two video cameras and high and low-level group children (n=20) was analyzed by the three-dimensional direct linear transformation (DLT) method. Results were as follows: 1) Elementary school children did proper inclination movement of their body according to their sprint ability and centrifugal force which affected the center of gravity when they sprinted on curve tracks. 2) In high-level group sprint on curve track, it is considered that left leg has a role which obtains propulsion and right leg has a role which resists the centrifugal force of the center of gravity. 3) It is considered that use of left leg which has a role of obtaining propulsion is concerned with cornering skill, and children who had superior cornering skill sprinted on curve track with a range of direction change during left foot contact and flight phase small. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 30 Oct. 2011, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2011, 418 - 423, Japanese
- A32 Effects of baseball bat mass and position of center of gravity on battingThe important characteristics to consider when analyzing a baseball bat swing include the centre of gravity, moment of inertia, and the length and mass of the bat. The present study investigated the effects of the mass and centre of gravity of a swung baseball bat. The knob of an experimental bat was equipped with accelerometers to measure the three linear and three angular components of acceleration applied to the bat when swung by trained baseball players. These six components of acceleration were measured using the experimental bat for 25 combinations of mass and centre of gravity. The mass and centre of gravity of the bat were found to affect both linear and angular acceleration during the swing. Thus, bat features relative to individual players must also be considered when analyzing the swing of a baseball bat.The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 02 Nov. 2010, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2010, 137 - 141, Japanese
- B44 Effects of block spacing on forces sprinters apply to starting blocksSprinters adjust the arrangement of their starting blocks prior to a race, but there is no clear standard for arranging the blocks. It is unclear at present how the arrangement changes the forces applied to the blocks and consequently affects performance coming off them. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the arrangement of the starting blocks on the forces applied to them. Forces applied by a sprinter to the front and the rear starting block as well as to the ground on the first step were measured using three force platforms for 18 different arrangements of block spacing. The results indicated that the amount of the impulse applied in starting posture to both the front and rear starting blocks changed little between the 18 arrangements. Likewise, no substantial change occurred in the forces applied to the ground on the first step. However, as the distance between the front and rear blocks changed, the ratio of the impulse applied to the front and rear blocks changed : as the block spacing was increased, the impulse applied to the front block during starting posture decreased while that at the rear block increased. In addition, changing the distance from the starting line to the front block influenced the relation between the block spacing distance and the forces applied to the two starting blocks. It was thought that in response to changes in the position of the starting blocks, the movement of the legs varied, with one leg compensating for the loss of force of the other leg, and thereafter there was no substantial change in the force applied to the ground on the first step. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 02 Nov. 2010, Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2010, 408 - 413, Japanese

- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Research Activity Start-up, 28 Aug. 2015 - 31 Mar. 2017Evaluation of sprint acceleration ability in various sportsThe sprint running ability has been evaluated using the maximum running speed. However, it is difficult to evaluate how to accelerate to the maximum speed. We proposed a method for evaluating sprint acceleration ability by approximating the changes in running speed using the exponential equations. And, we examined the relationship between sprint acceleration ability and sprint running ability by using this method. Furthermore, we investigated the acceleration characteristics in different sports. Our results showed that the values of the coefficients of the exponential equations were different depending on the patterns of acceleration. Therefore, it is possible to evaluate and examine the characteristics of the sprint acceleration characteristics of each athlete and sports by approximating the changes in running speed using the exponential equations.

- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kobe University, 2008 - 2010, Principal investigatorThe present study focused on the characteristics of the bat used by batters in baseball and examined the acceleration applied to a bat and how the mass and position of the COG affect swing. The swing of each batter was reproducible and unique, their swing movement conforming to a fixed form for each batter. For each batter, the most suitable bat properties to maximize angular momentum through changes in angular momentum applied to the bat according to changes in the bat were investigated.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kobe University, 2005 - 2005The purpose of this research was to explain correlation between improvement of the dancing technique and a feeling value which is got through bodily sensation about dance movements. We did the investigation about the basic emotions which are got through bodily sensations first. Based on that result, the eight basic dancing movements were created and then the validity of those movements were verified and the check list of dancing terms was made at the same time. We made an experiment about the change of the feeling value which is got through bodily sensation about the dance movement. The testee who are university stdents were tested five times. As that result, as for the change in a bodily sensation by dancing the same dancing movement repeatedly, it became clear that it passed through the next three processes. (1)It is desperate to memorize a movement, and there is no room to be conscious of a bodily sensation. (2)A movement is memorized, and they can dance smoothly, and aware of their bodily sensation and a feeling by dancing. (3)They can dance with oneself's rhythm, oneself-ness can be expressed. Furthermore, a class that contains the teaching of the dancing movement was opened. As the result, the effect of including "Dance the same dancing movement repeatedly." into contents of a class was proved. In order to prove change of student's movement, we introduced the three-dimensional motion analysis (the DLT method) and the improvement of student's dancing movement was caught objectively. The analytic viewpoint of the dancing movement had the character which was different from other movements, It was recognized that a change in the height of the movement became the main index.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kobe University, 1998 - 2000Development of baseball bat considering skill of bat swing for athleteThe purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the characteristics of baseball bat on swing. For this purpose, it was provided an experimental bat to be able to set up various conditions for the position of the center of gravity and the mass. On the other, it was investigated the skill of bat swing in baseball. The subjects were five skilled baseball players and three unskilled players. The behaviors of the bat during their swings were analyzed with DLT method using two cameras, and the three-dimensional kinematical data were calculated at impact to the ball and during swinging the bat. As the result, it was suggested that the level of skill for bat swing could be evaluated by the reproducibility of swing. Next, it was investigated the effect of the characteristics of baseball bat on swing. The subjects were five skilled baseball players. As the result, there were a few cases in which the angular velocity of bat at the impact was affect to the position of center of gravity or the mass on bat. In the case in which the characteristics of bat was affect to the swing speed at the impact, there had a favorably effect on the behavior of bat during swing. But, it was not recognized that the characteristics of bat affected to the accuracy at the impact. Eventually, it was summarized that the baseball bat is required to equip the characteristic of bat to be suitable the character of player after understanding the character on each player.
