In this study, the authors propose a method to estimate the position on an air bed by internal pressure change. The pressure of a bed varies by the position because the contact area between body and bed changes. The experimental system uses a commercially available air bed and a gauge pressure sensor. The figure shows measured pressure change according to the position. From this result, prone or supine position and lateral position are easily discriminated from the pressure difference. Furthermore, sitting position and fall from a bed were clearly detected. But prone or supine position and left or right lateral position can't be discriminated in principle.

In recent years, wearable technology has been advanced for the purpose of physiological monitoring system during daily life. However, conventional compact and lightweight sensors are expensive to use in the field of wearable monitoring, such as walking rehabilitation. This paper presents compact, lightweight, and inexpensive thin-film force sensor for wearable monitoring system. The thin-film force sensor requires a “puck” that is placed on the sensing area to ensure that the entire load path goes through this area. However, heterogeneous load distribution may appear on the sensor depending on the material of the puck. The difference between the outputs of the sensor using aluminum puck upon the application of surface and point forces was less than that of the sensor using PET puck. This result suggested that rigid materials are suitable for puck, thus we utilized thin-film force sensor with an aluminum-puck for planter pressure measurement to estimate ground reaction force. The performance of the thin-film force sensor was confirmed equivalent to that of the force plate. It is expected that a simple and inexpensive system to evaluate daily movement behavior has been developed.

This paper deals with a digital control scheme of multiple paralleled high frequency switching current amplifier with four-quadrant chopper for generating gradient magnetic fields in MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) systems. In order to track high precise current pattern in Gradient Coils (GC), the proposal current amplifier cancels the switching current ripples in GC with each other and designed optimum switching gate pulse patterns without influences of the large filter current ripple amplitude. The optimal control implementation and the linear control theory in GC current amplifiers have affinity to each other with excellent characteristics. The digital control system can be realized easily through the digital control implementation, DSPs or microprocessors. Multiple-parallel operational microprocessors realize two or higher paralleled GC current pattern tracking amplifier with optimal control design and excellent results are given for improving the image quality of MRI systems.

This paper deals the digital optimal current control scheme to improve MRI (Magnetic Resonant Imaging) Gradient-Magnetic Coil (GC) current control implementation. The GC current needs high precision control specifications so as to take clear images with MRI. The novel MRI-GC current control amplifier has the high-frequency PWM chopper circuit with a multi-parallel input structure. The GC current control circuit can prevent the current ripple amplitude and realize high precision GC current controls, but the control system is hard to design because the GC current control circuit has the multi-input and multi-output structure and required high precision control abilities. Therefore, the digital optimal control scheme has tried to apply for the GC current control. The optimal controller is skillful at the design of multi-input and multi-output systems. The novel controller will actualize the high precision GC current controllability because Error System newly includes the GC current error parameter so as to decide the multi-inputs. In this paper, we discuss the novel controller with computer simulations that it can expect the high precision GC current control to improve the image quality of MRI systems.

This paper presents a Multiple Bridges Power Conversion Circuit (MBPCC) for the switchmode gradient power amplifiers in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems. The MBPCC is connected in parallel with the conventional 4-switch full-bridge circuits using insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) at their inputs/outputs in order to realize further high-power density. A unique digital control scheme for MBPCC, which requires minimized the ripple and improved the rise/fall response characteristics of the current in the gradient coil, is proposed and described here. The MBPCC as overall system is perfectly suited to the gradient power amplifier for advanced MRI because the output current waves are not restricted to ramped-squarewaves and can assume any arbitrary forms. It is expected that the proposed techniques will highly enlarge the diagnostic target and improve the image quality of MRI.

This paper presents a New Power Conversion Circuit with digital control scheme for the switch-mode gradient power amplifiers in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems. T case a analog control scheme is introduced for this systemcontroller, a good output current quality to follow up any arbitrary input current waveforms. But the switching devices (ICBTs, Static Induction Transistors) have a limit for switching speed and current capacity. Therefore it is hard to achieve good current quality power amplifiers. A unique dgital control scheme for The Multiple Brides Power Conversion Circuit (MBPCC), which requires minimiz the ripple and improved rise/fall response characteristics of the current in the Gradient Coils (GCs), is proposed and described here. It is expected that the proposed techniques will highly enlarge the diagnostic target and improve the image quality of MRI.

In order to measure in real time the ground reaction force and the center of plantar pressure, we have developed an inexpensive and simple gait measurement smart-insole by combining two or more commercially available inexpensive thin-film force sensors. Several mechanical properties, such as compressive load, shear force and bending stress, were made to evaluate the performance of commercially available inexpensive thin-film force sensors and a new designed triaxial shear force sensor. In addition, the estimating results of ground reaction force waveform and trajectory of the center of plantar pressure were verified experimentally over different footwear and walking pace on a group of subjects. It will be expected that the research results have been contributed to sports instruction and walking rehabilitation in the field.

  • Improvement of human movement using haptic sensory information through wearing clothing in daily life

Providing additional haptic sensory information through a lightly (< 1N) touching to a fixed object resulted in decreased postural sway during standing. This "light touch effect" suggests that haptic sensory input primarily provides information about body orientation. This study applied this effect in various clothing models. For instance, wearing a fluttering cloth wrapped around the waist and extending to the lower leg was effective in improving gait performance. Therefore, wearing clothing which has a certain amount of space between the material and the body and that makes contact with the body as it moves may enhance individuals' perceptions of their body orientation. Furthermore, such a clothing shape were also effective for motor learning of gait performance. These results suggest that a skirt-like outfit such as the hakama in Japan or kilts in Scotland may be effective to improve human movements as compared with trouser-like clothing that is in continuous contact with the legs.

In order to make mechanical indexes for evaluating the quality and strength of human bones, sectional modulus of cortical bones against bending moment and muscle at forearm were analyzed through CT (computed tomography) images. The aging characteristics of women aged 50 to 82 were investigated. The ratio of cross section of muscle to bone and the strength index by using natural frequency of forearm bones corresponding to Young’s modulus were calculated. These indexes showed the tendency to decrease with aging similarly to the bone mineral density. Effective arrangement of sensors and bending properties of thin piezoelectric films were investigated and then the usage as an equipment for measuring and revealing the load relationship between bones and muscle was ascertained.

In order to easily and quantitatively evaluate the gait in walking rehabilitation, we have developed a reaction force measuring insole and inexpensive wireless measurement system for gait analysis. Several mechanical properties, such as compressive load, shear force and bending stress, were made to evaluate the performance of commercially available inexpensive thin-film force sensors and a new designed uniaxial shear force sensor. As a result, the accuracy for estimating and considerations upon implementation in force measurement for various daily body activities were revealed. In addition, the estimating results of ground reaction force waveform were verified experimentally over different footwear and walking pace on a group of subjects. It will be expected that a simple and inexpensive system to evaluate daily gait has been developed.

In order to evaluate the quality and strength of human bones, cross sectional areas of bones and muscles of forearm were calculated from computed tomography (CT) image analysis. Then mechanical indexes involving the effect of muscle forces were proposed and the aging porperty was investigated. For comparison the bone mineral density and the strength index by using natural frequency of forearm bones corresponding to Young's modulus were calculated. The proposed indexes with respect to bending and compression showed the tendency to decrease with aging similarly to the bone mineral density and the strength index. Bending and compression properties of thin films of sensors were investigated for revealing the loading relationship between bones and muscle force and measuring those forces, and then the usage as a force sensor was ascertained.

Concerning evaluating the strength and quality of human bones, we proposed some indexes by the measurement of natural frequencies of forearms and bone mineral densities and then investigated these aging characteristics for female over age 50. Bone mineral densities were measured by pQCT method at both 4% and 20% distal sites of radii and the CT images were analyzed. Results of the present research were as follows: 1. Aging characteristics of total bone density and cortical density at the 20% distal site were compared with those of bone densities at the 4% distal site. It was found that the ratio of total bone density at the 20% site to that at the 4% site was about twice for any age group and the decrease rate of cortical density at the 20% site was smaller than that of total bone densities. 2. Concerning the influence of muscles on bones, the sectional areas of muscles and bones were analyzed from CT images at the 20% site. A method for obtaining the muscle area without fat regions was proposed and the ratio of bone areas to muscle areas (B/M ratio) was used as an index for this purpose. 3. For subjects with the measurement of natural frequencies bone strength indexes of three kinds corresponding to the Young's modulus were calculated and these aging characteristics were investigated. The bone strength index using the total bone density at the 4% site is considered to be most available. The decrease rate of the bone strength index for aging is more remarkable than that of bone mineral densities and B/M ratio. It is found that bone mineral densities and the bone area decrease earlier than bone strength indexes and the muscle area.
