• An examination whether physical activity during pregnancy is related to anxiety and labor : a longitudinal study

  The purpose of this study was to examine whether physical activity is related to anxiety and duration of labor. Subjects included 28 primiparas with normal pregnancies and 20 subjects who gave birth vaginally after the 37th week of pregnancy. Subjects continuously were activity monitors starting 20th week until the day before delivery to measure the amount of physical activity they undertook. Anxiety was measured three times in pregnancy with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). We identified regression analysis resulted in the following regression equation : number of steps=8,719.73-55.76×number of weeks pregnant (normal delivery). A moderate negative correlation was observed between mid-level physical activity during the third trimester and STAI scores. Multiple linear regression analysis with the duration of labor resulted in the following equation : Duration of labor=693.43+69.97×weight gain-7.24×ratio of the number of steps in the third trimester and number of steps in the second trimester This study clarified that the number of steps from the second trimester onward decreases with increasing duration of pregnancy and that the rate of reduction in the amount of physical activity as the pregnancy progresses and weight gain influenced on labor.

• Bone mineral density and bone turnover and its related factors

  A total of 19４ female college students were enrolled in this study. The BMD of the right calcaneus of all subjects was measured using Quantitative Ultrasound.The self-administered questionnaires consisted of questions concerning demographic characteristics such as body type and lifestyle-related factors. The biochemical markers of bone turnover and related factors were measured in Osteopenia group (16 subjects) and Normal group (31 subjects). As a result, there were 23 subjects（11.9％） with low BMD. Furthermore,there is a possibility that the deficiency of the level of vitaminD and vitaminK affect bone turnover and BMD.


• Development of a lower back pain-prevention program for pregnant women based on gait analysis

  Analysis using the gait index in pregnant women in the second and third trimesters indicated that significantly greater variability and significantly less smoothness were noted in the third trimester. This data proved that the gait becomes unstable in the third trimester. Significant correlations were found between third trimester trunk sway and gait regularity with the number of steps in the second and third trimesters, suggesting that engaging in exercise from the second trimester could prevent gait instability and trunk rigidity. There were no significant differences observed for lower back pain, depression or autonomic nervous activity in the second semester and third trimesters. Although no correlation was noted between lower back pain and the gait index or amount of physical activity, the fact that a significant correlation was found between EPDS and lower back pain in the third trimester indicated that a depressed mood is associated with lower back pain.

  For minors in residential childcare facilities, we investigated the current situation and issues concerning sexual health education. Since the backgrounds of the minors before they entered the facilities were so individually varied, and because the group life they had entered was so susceptible to the spread of false perceptions, the facilities staff practiced ad hoc life support. Some minors were found to have health problems after leaving the facilities. To enable positive action to be taken to ensure the sexual health of minors, it is clear that residential facilities with schools require educational support and guidance to support sexual health self-reliance. Although testing of the effectiveness of suggested measures has not been possible, utilizing social resources, based on aftercare, there is a need for a plan of education involving collaboration of medical, welfare, and education professionals.
