To develop basic technologies for the marine transportation of hydrogen energy, a liquid hydrogen experiment facility (LHEF) has been designed and constructed at the Fukae campus of Kobe University. This LHEF consists of an experiment room, a measurement room, a H2 gas vent line, a vacuum pumping line, high-pressure gas security equipment, etc. A liquid hydrogen (LH2) optical cryostat equipped with a vacuum jacket, a liquid nitrogen space (15 L) and LH2 space (20 L) has been installed in the experiment room. This paper explains the details of constructing the LHEF, including countermeasures for high-pressure gas security and experimental results using LH2 obtained so far.

To develop a loading arm for ship-to-shore transfer of liquefied hydrogen, an emergency release system (ERS) for liquefied hydrogen has been designed and manufactured. In order to estimate its mechanical and thermal behaviors, we have developed a calculation model for temperature and stress distribution of the ERS at low temperatures during the transfer of liquefied hydrogen. The calculation has revealed that the surface temperature would exceed the boiling point of oxygen. A prototype model of the designed ERS has been manufactured and tested by filling liquid hydrogen in the model. The temperature and strain on the surface have been measured during the test and compared with the calculation results. The results have shown that the calculation can predict the temperature on the surface of ERS and that the designed ERS can avoid generating liquefied oxygen. It has also been shown that the measured strains are well consistent with the predicted strain on the surface of ERS. It has been demonstrated that the developed ERS exhibits performance good enough to be utilized for the loading arm for transfer of liquefied hydrogen.

We aim to provide basic technology for the marine transportation of liquid hydrogen (LH2). As one of the basic technologies, we are currently developing an external-heating-type superconducting magnesium diboride (MgB2) level sensor for large liquid hydrogen tanks. The optimization of sensor performance and the effect of sensor length on thermal response were previously reported. Sloshing inside a liquid hydrogen tank, which is predicted to be more complex than that of liquefied natural gas (LNG), has not yet been clarified. In this study, we examined sloshing in a small liquid hydrogen tank using multiple external-heating-type MgB2 sensors since these sensors exhibit good level-detection characteristics. As a result, the liquid level detection error from these sensors was up to about 4 mm, thereby showing good characteristics of dynamic level detection. Moreover, sloshing measurements with five level sensors were carried out successfully.

- To construct a calculation model of flow loss in a helical-type seawater magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) power generator, it is important to elucidate the effects of the rotation number, the pitch length and the inner diameter of the helical wall on the pressure distribution and flow loss. The pressure distribution and flow loss in experimental devices constructed to model generators with a helical wall made of polyvinyl chloride with an outer diameter of 100 mm, inner diameters of 10, 20 and 30 mm, pitch lengths of 30, 37.5 and 45 mm and rotation numbers of 3, 5 and 7 were measured systematically. The effect of the rotation number on flow loss was small at flow rates of 20 m3/h or less and relatively large at flow rates of 30 and 40 m3/h. The effect of the pitch length was small at flow rates of 20 m3/h or less and relatively large at flow rate of 28 m3/h. The effect of the inner diameter was small at flow rates of 20 m3/h or less and relatively large at flow rates of 30 and 34 m3/h. The pressure drops in the vicinity of the entrance and / or the exit were the main causes of the disagreement in the flow loss between the experimental and computed values. - A unique device for separating oil from oil-contaminated seawater by the magnetohydrodynamics (MHID) method, so-called the MIID separation device, is improved on the basis of the results of observation of the inside of MHD separation cells. The MHID method is based on the difference in electric conductivity between seawater and oil; the separation force applied to oil as a reaction of the electromagnetic force is used for oil separation. The performance of the improved device with a mixture of artificial seawater and simulation particles instead of oil droplets is tested using a 10-T class superconducting magnet. - The basic experiment of maritime sciences is a brand-new subject, offered for sophomores of faculty of maritime sciences from 2005. In order to check the satisfactory of the sophomores for basic experiment of maritime sciences, the questionnaire survey have been performed. As an experimental result of para hydrogen concentration of the evaporated gas with an O-P analyzer, it becomes evident that the evaporated gas shows anomalous long P-O conversion. On the subject B of research on LH2 storage and transportation, the experiment of pressurized LH2 under depressurization has been done. Then we find that the gross evaporation and the boiling behavior can be highly influenced by the liquid condition. In addition, the accumulation experiment of GH2 evaporated from LH2 under horizontal vibration has been done. It is found that accumulation time increases with increasing the vibration time certainly; pressure increasing speed of GH2 can be suppressed by the horizontal vibration.

- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 萌芽的研究, 神戸商船大学, 2000 - 2001MHD方式による海洋流出油の回収技術の研究近年、タンカー等の座礁事故により原油や重油などが海上に流出する事故が問題となっている。このような油の流出が環境に与える影響は非常に大きいので、迅速な回収処理が望まれる。しかし、我が国において海洋流出油の回収技術は、はなはだ未発達な現状にある。 我々は、従来より超伝導マグネットを応用した電磁推進船、海流MHD発電等の研究を推進している。その過程で海水と油の電気的性質の違いを利用することにより、電磁場の印加のみによって海水流出油を分離回収することが原理的に可能であるとの着想に基づいてこの研究を進めている。 昨年度は実験装置および油分離セルを製作して、油の代用品(高分子粒子、直径100μm)を用いて基礎分離特性を調べた。その結果、分離率は電流および磁場にほぼ比例して増加すること、またモデル計算の値とよく一致することが明らかとなった。今年度は油分離セルを大型化するとともに粒子径を大きくして(直径1mm)、分離率を高める実験を行った。本実験によって得られた主な結果は以下のとおりである。 1. 0.4アンペアの電流、10テスラの強磁場下で90%を超える分離率が得られた。 2. 分離率は電流および磁場が一定のとき、海水流速にほぼ反比例することが明らかとなった。 3. 粒子径が大きい場合、分離率はモデル計算の値よりやや大きくなったが、この理由について海水に働く電磁力の影響に着目して現在検討を行っている。 今後、実際に油を用いて実証実験を行い、高い分離率が得られるかどうか調べる予定である。
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B)., Kobe University of Mercantile Marine, 1999 - 2000Basic Study on Helical Type MHD Ship Thruster Using 15T Class High Magnetic FieldOn the basis of thruster data obtained last year, simulation study was made in the case of magnifying the thruster, and the optimum structure was discussed. In addition, the transient characteristics of MHD thruster were studied using pulsed currents so that the problem of out gas electrolyzed can be settled. As a result of simulation, it was found that the thruster efficiency has a maximun value at an electrode length of 10 m, an electrode diameter of 6 m, and a helical pitch of 0.6 m, also that the efficiency goes up to 90 % by magnifying the thruster. Meanwhile, good transient characteristics of the MHD thruster was observed with the experimental condition that magnetic field is 6 T, pulsed current is 10 A, and current frequency is 1 to 25 Hz.
- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 基盤研究(C), 神戸商船大学, 1996 - 1996^3He-^4He混合液体の過熱限界点測定による気泡核形成の研究液体の過熱限界点(T_S)を測定してnucleation理論と比較することにより、気液相転移のonsetにおける気泡核の形成率・形成エネルギー・大きさについて有用な情報が得られる。この種の研究において、液体ヘリウムは高純度なサンプルが得られ、しかも量子性が顕著であるのでnucleationの研究にとって極めて興味深い研究対象である。本研究は液体^3Heに^4He分子を混入させると、過熱限界点すなわち気泡核のhomo geneous nucleationにどのように影響するかを明らかにする目的で行われた、初めての実験的研究である。実験値は核形成理論による予言値と比較検討した。 実験に用いたサンプルは、^3Heモル濃度が25.00%,50.01%,74.99%,94.57%の4種類である。サンプル液体の容積は7.13×10^<-3>ccである。サンプル液体の加熱には、ガラスキャピラリー法とヒートパルス法を採用し、定圧下で得たサーモグラムよりT_Sを決定した。測定の温度範囲は1.5〜4.1Kであり,サンプルにかかる圧力の範囲は0.05〜1.00atmである。理論値の計算に必要なサンプルの密度にはE.C.Kerr等のデータを、また表面張力にはB.N.Esel'son等のデータを用いた。得られた主な結果は、(1)圧力が小さい領域では、T_Sは圧力に大きく依存するが、圧力が大きい領域ではほぼ直線的に変化する。(2)圧力が約0.1atm付近ではT_Sの実験値と理論値はほぼ一致しているが、圧力が大きくなると実験値が理論値よりもsystematicに大きくなる。(3)このようなsystematicなズレは、純粋な液体^3Heや液体^4Heでは認められず、混合系に特有な現象である。

- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 一般研究(C), 神戸商船大学, 1991 - 1991強磁場下における液体酸素の過熱限界の研究液体酸素の過熱限界点に対する強磁場効果の実験的研究を行い、ほぼ当初の計画通り終了することが出来た。以下の主な経過,結果を要約し成果報告とする。 1主旨:過熱限界点の研究は一次相転移のonset,核の界面エネルギ-,核生成のkinematicsなどの諸点より重要である。このような研究において、唯一の磁性液体である液体酸素の強磁場効果には非常に興味がもたれるが、これまで調べられていなかった。本研究は、酸素の過熱限界点に対する強磁場効果についてなされた初めての研究である。 2実験方法:本研究では少量のサンプル液を磁場均一度のよい空間で、高精度の測定を可能にするため、ヒ-ト・パルスを用い、得られたサ-モグラムより過熱限界点を決定する方法をとった。この方法に基づいて、極低温かつ超伝導強磁場下において、測定精度・安定性・計測速度等の点で従来より優れた自動化測定システムを完成させた。このシステムでは、本科学研究補助金によるデジタルストレ-ジ型オシロスコ-プ,40Mバイトのハ-ドディスクおよびアンプ調整用の直流電源が重要な役割をはたしている。 3実験結果:この装置を用いて、まず予備実験として、ゼロ磁場下で液体酸素,液体窒素をサンプルとして過熱限界点の測定を行い、従来の実験値および理論値と比較検討した。その結果これらの間に矛盾のないことが認められた。次に7Tまでの強磁場下で液体酸素の過熱限界点を測定した。その結果、磁場下では過熱限界点が明らかに低下することが分かった。外圧1atm,磁場7Tの場合、過熱限界点の低下は約1.4Kであった。 4学会発表:以上の結果は、低温工学・超伝導学会(1991,秋),日本物理学会(1992,春)にて口頭発表された。
