Electric power storage systems based on hydrogen storage device, water electrolyzer and fuel cell have been developed for load leveling. Unitized regenerative fuel cell (URFC) is promising for cost reduction and improvement of operating rate of the system. In this study, stack efficiency and system efficiency considering auxiliaries power and exhaust heat energy of 1 kW class URFC system with auxiliaries were evaluated and compared to the dedicated devices. In addition, response for fluctuated input for electrolysis operation was verified to assume utilization of photovoltaics.

In order to use energy more efficiently, progress of energy storage technology is indispensable. Hydrogen is one of the energy storage media with the potential as an energy career. We have proposed the Totalized Hydrogen Energy Utilization System (THEUS) for applying to commercial buildings. THEUS is composed of fuel cells, water electrolyzers, hydrogen storage tanks and their auxiliaries. THEUS contributes to electric power load leveling, providing a stable supply of power for emergencies, and energy-saving for building energy consumption. We have developed the hydrogen storage tank using metal hydride alloy. This is the important component of THEUS. This paper presents the operation control method for multiple metal hydride tanks in THEUS. The mathematical model of the multiple metal hydride tanks was developed by which it is possible to reproduce driving. Several methods for controlling the operation of multiple metal hydride tanks, which would likely be used in actual operation, is proposed. Then, effects of the proposed method on hydrogen storage state are investigated by results of experiment and calculation using multiple metal hydride tanks. Method B2, with the water circulation pipes connected in series and the multiple metal hydride tanks control, make the most of the metal hydride tank flexibility with respect to tank selection.

The mathematical model of the multiple metal hydride tanks has been developed by which it is possible to reproduce driving. Several methods for controlling the operation of multiple metal hydride tanks, which would likely be used in actual operation, is proposed. Effects of actual load patterns and proposed methods were investigated experimentally and numerically on multiple metal hydride tanks operation. From the comparison between calculated results and experimental results, it is confirmed that the mathematical model calculation can estimate the driving behavior of the multiple metal hydride tanks. Then, multiple tanks control pressure values of each actual load pattern were determined for the operation efficiency optimization by the mathematical model. Method B2, with the water circulation pipes connected in series and the multiple metal hydride tanks control, could obtain cold source with high efficiency.

Near feature, cryogenic propellants including liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen and liquid natural gas will be handled on orbit for space transportation systems. It will be absolutely needed to measure the liquid volume under the micro-gravity condition. In the present study, Helmholtz resonance is applied to measure a liquid volume. In order to confirm the applicability of this measurement technique to cryogens, the micro-gravity experiment using liquid nitrogen was carried out. We report the experimental results and propose a measurement system for the practical application on orbit.

This paper describes the results of a visualization study of the phase transition process and heat transport phenomenon in supercritical air near the maxcondentherm point. The phase transition from the vapor/liquid equilibrium state to the supercritical state is observed by the use of a shadowgraph technique. On the other hand, the heat transport phenomenon in supercritical air is investigated by the use of a laser holographic interferometer. The initial temperature gradient, which suppresses the generation of convection, is made in the experiment, and heat is applied in step functions from the planar heater. We can successfully observe the heat transport phenomenon in supercritical air, and the experimental results are compared with that of supercritical nitrogen, We report the difference of the heat transport phenomenon between the supercritical air and the supercritical nitrogen.

This paper describes the results of a visualization study of the phase transition process and heat transport phenomenon in supercritical nitrogen. An experimental apparatus for the visualization study is designed to observe the heat transport phenomena. The experimental cell is a rectangular parallelepiped surrounded with two optical windows, a ceiling, two side-walls made of Bakelite and a planar heater at the bottom. Heat is applied in step functions from the planar heater. The phase transition from the vapor/liquid equilibrium state to the supercritical state is observed by the use of a shadowgraph technique. On the other hand, the heat transfer phenomenon in supercritical nitrogen is investigated using a laser holographic interferometer. The initial temperature gradient, which suppresses the generation of convection, is made in the experiment. We can successfully observe the heat transport phenomenon that the convection and piston effect carry thermal energy in supercritical nitrogen.

This paper describes the results of an experimental study of closed cryogenic two-phase thermosyphon with air as the working fluid. The thermosyphon, which was 270mm long with an inner diameter of 8mm, was operated over a wide pressure range, from near the triple point to the critical point of air. The axial temperature distributions within the thermosyphon were measured as a function of heat transfer rate under the conditions of various operating vapor pressure. The thermal resistance and the maximum heat transfer rate were obtained from the measurement. The present experimental data for air are compared with the data of thermosyphon with nitrogen as the working fluid.

The flow structure of a thermal counterflow jet is investigated by direct measurement of the normal fluid velocity with a laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV). The temporal and spatial variation of the normal fluid velocity is measured to investigate the detailed nature of He II thermal counterflow jet. The velocity profile and the variation of the center-line velocity with the axial distance are also obtained to discuss the flow structure in a downstream region. It is found that the thermal counterflow jet in the far field behaves like a fully developed turbulent jet in ordinary fluids. It, however, seems that the way of development differs from that of ordinary fluid jets.

A laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) was applied to the measurement of thermal counterflow jet in He II, which is capable of direct measurement of the normal fluid velocity at the jet nozzle exit. The analysis of velocity measurement suggests that the normal fluid jet entrains the surrounding superfluid, which result in the zero relative velocity of two fluid even very close to the nozzle exit. It is demonstrated that the second sound Helmholtz oscillation measurement is of use as a diagnostics for superfluid turbulent state. The frequency and the decay of the oscillation were investigated for this purpose. It is also suggested that a weak superfluid turbulent state may exist in small heat input case. While, in large heat input case, the turbulent state was identified as the Gorter-Mellink type superfluid turbulent state.

Two horizontal metal hydride tanks with a double coil heat exchanger that contained 50 kg of MmNi_5 metal hydride alloy with different Pressure-Composition-Temperature (PCT) isotherm properties were developed and tested in this study. One was designed for the experiments in USA and the other was designed for the experiments in Japan in which there is the high pressure gas safety act. The reaction heat recovery rates of these tanks were compared and it was confirmed that the reaction heat recovery rates were almost the same. However it could not be filled the tank up with hydrogen in the case of the Japanese specifications.

We have studied on metal hydride tanks for load leveling of commercial buildings. The storage tank with 50 kg AB5 type metal hydride alloy was assembled to investigate the hydrogen absorbing/desorbing process, which is exothermic/endothermic process. We have a plan to utilize hot heat and cold heat of each process for air conditioning that could be expected to improve the system efficiency. In order to get high availability of reaction heat, optimization of operating method is required. For this reason, evaluation of operating method is carried out by experiment and numerical simulation.

We proposed the totalized hydrogen energy utilization system that consists of a fuel cell device, a water electrolysis device and metal hydride tanks, and developed the mathematical model of hydrogen storage system that composes of several metal hydride tanks. The discharging hydrogen performance was investigated experimentally and numerically. As a results, it was shown that if the circulating water piping that flows in metal hydride tanks was connected with the series, and control method that increased the number of operating tanks are adopted when the outlet pressure of hydrogen decreases, hydrogen in each tank could be efficiently used.

We proposed the Totalized Hydrogen Energy Utilization System (THEUS) for applying to commercial buildings. By introducing this system in actual fields, we have realized the simultaneously effective uses of electricity, hydrogen and heat, hi this paper, we reported energy efficiency evaluation of the system by the calculation. Data as heat demand for seven type buildings were used, including buildings with different scales, applications, and characteristics of heat load. In comparison with an ice storage system, it has been proved that the hydrogen system has the advantage of 9-17% in terms of effective energy use. Moreover, the flexible operation of metal hydride tanks for fluctuating heat demand of the building was evaluated.

We have investigated heat and mass transport phenomena in artificial air near the critical point to obtain a technical expertise in efficient recovering of the cold energy from liquefied natural gas or liquid hydrogen by using air. The soret effect in artificial air, which was nitrogen-oxygen binary mixture with the composition of 79.1mol% of nitrogen and 20.9mol% of oxygen, was investigated by using a single stage two-chamber cell. We obtained the thermal diffusion ratio from a series of experiments and confirmed that it assigned negative near the critical point.

Cooling performance of pulse tube refrigerators was investigated in a temperature range from about 270K to 80K to apply cooling systems for a temperature range higher than the liquid nitrogen temperature. Helium and nitrogen were used as a working gas. It is found that performance of refrigerator with nitrogen is more influenced by the connecting tube between a hot end of pulse tube to a reservoir than that with helium, and pulse tube refrigerators that are deigned and optimized for helium didn't always work as refrigerators with high performance for nitrogen.
