- Optical path switching networks will become increasingly important for providing high-speed, low-latency end-to-end communication for emerging services in the 6G era. Current networks are designed for semi-static operation, providing limited flexibility and dynamic control. When high-speed path provisioning or release is performed, gain transients affect the quality of transmission (QoT) across multiple spans, causing QoT fluctuations. So far, amplifiers that can handle burst signals have been developed to solve this problem, and we have developed the burst-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifier (BM-EDFA). In order to use the BM-EDFA in the core network, it must support gain flatness over the full C-band and large gain for a wide-area optical transmission. In this study, we developed a cascaded three-stage BM-EDFA and experimentally demonstrate, using a 1200 km long-distance optical transmission testbed, that the developed BM-EDFA effectively suppresses gain transients and QoT fluctuations in wide-area and full C-band optical path switching networks. The three-stage configuration of the BM-EDFA supports a large optical gain of up to 27 dB of relatively flat gain across the C-band and wide-area optical networks. We experimentally evaluated the three-stage BM-EDFAs using a long-distance optical transmission testbed consisting of 12 cascaded three-stage BM-EDFAs over 1200 km of optical fiber, carrying 64 Gbaud quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals across the full C-band. To emulate dynamic network operation, add/drop operations were performed at an intermediate node, and the resulting QoT fluctuations were evaluated over a 1000 km transmission including 10 cascaded BM-EDFAs after the add/drop point. Consequently, while the three-stage BM-EDFA exhibits a steady-state optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty of 2.7 dB, the representative per-channel gain fluctuations at the network edge during add/drop operations are dramatically reduced—from 5.95 to 0.18 dB and from 4.12 to 0.05 dB, respectively—compared with conventional EDFAs. These results demonstrate that the three-stage BM-EDFA enables stable and reliable dynamic optical path switching by effectively suppressing network-scale QoT fluctuations in wide-area, full C-band optical networks.Optica Publishing Group, Mar. 2026, Journal of Optical Communications and Networking, 18(4) (4), 365 - 377, English[Refereed]Scientific journal
- This study presents an innovative inline dual-phase modulation technique for compact lensless holographic displays. By utilizing a single spatial light modulator (SLM) and employing two-phase components derived from double-phase holography symmetrically positioned in the upper and lower halves of the SLM, we achieve a holographic display through the superposition of a digital phase grating. This approach eliminated the need for bulky 4-F systems, resulting in a compact optical setup. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed method provides high-precision image reconstruction using a single SLM, and the experimental results confirm its efficacy in achieving image reconstruction with minimal speckle noise compared to the conventional iterative random phase method. Additionally, incorporating an initial random phase reduces artifacts in practical experimental settings, producing less speckle noise than the conventional iterative random phase method. Moreover, based on the proposed method, a beam splitter was used for further coupling in the reconstruction plane, resulting in an expanded display area while maintaining a compact system. - A spatial mode multiplexer that uses multiplexed volume holograms provides a compact and high mode-scalability solution for multiplexing spatial modes in mode division multiplexing (MDM) transmission. In this approach, multiplexed volume holograms designed to match the electric field distributions of spatial modes are prerecorded on a recording medium such as a photopolymer or a photorefractive crystal. These recorded volume holograms are then used to multiplex and demultiplex spatial modes using the diffraction effect. In this study, we developed and evaluated volume holograms while simultaneously optimizing the exposure dose and compensating for the incident angles of the object and reference beams, ensuring the effective operation of the device as a mode multiplexer/demultiplexer. Additionally, we performed the first evaluation of a back-to-back configuration within a mode multiplexer/demultiplexer using multiplexed volume holograms. The configuration of the mode multiplexer based on volume holograms resulted in a compact optical system comprising two lenses, a single-mode fiber array, and a recording medium. Experimental results demonstrated that when the diffracted beam from the volume holograms was coupled to a three-mode fiber, an excitation ratio of 25 dB or more was achieved between LP01 and LP11, confirming the effective operation of the volume holograms as a spatial mode multiplexer. - Ultrafast single-shot measurement techniques with high throughput are needed for capturing rare events that occur over short time scales. Such instruments unveil non-repetitive dynamics in complex systems and enable new types of spectrometers, cameras, light scattering, and lidar systems. Photonic time stretch stands out as the most effective method for such applications. However, practical uses have been challenged by the reliance of current time stretch instruments on costly supercontinuum lasers and their fixed spectrum. The challenge is further exacerbated by such a laser’s rigid self-pulsating characteristic, which offers no ability to control the pulse timing. The latter hinders the synchronization of the optical source with the incoming signal—a crucial requirement for the detection of single-shot events. Here, we report the first demonstration of time stretch using electro-optically modulated continuous wave lasers. We do this using diode lasers and modulators commonly used in wavelength-division-multiplexing optical communication systems. This approach offers more cost-effective and compact time stretch instruments and sensors and enables the synchronization of the laser source with the incoming signal. - The recording density in holographic data storage (HDS) systems is determined by the dynamic range of the recording medium. If a hologram is recorded with a small exposure, the consumption amount of the dynamic range per hologram is reduced, and the recording density can be improved. In this report, we propose a digital image multiplexing/demultiplexing method using spatial spectral diffusion and a virtual phase conjugation technique to reduce the consumption amount of the dynamic range in a recording medium. In our method, multiple signals are simultaneously recorded in a medium by multiplexing those signals using a beam combiner before recording, unlike the general multiplexing method of HDS. Then, each original signal can be reproduced independently by utilizing the property of a random diffuser and a phase-conjugated light. - We propose a digital confocal microscope using a virtual 4f-system based on numerical beam propagation for depth measurement without mechanical scanning. In our technique, the information in the sample target along the depth direction is obtained by defocusing the virtual 4f-system, which consists of two virtual lenses arranged in a computer simulation. The principle of our technique is completely different from that of the mechanical scanning method used in the conventional confocal microscope based on digital holography. By using the virtual 4f-system, the measurement and exposure time can be markedly reduced because multilayered tomographic images are generated using a single measurement. In recent years, collapse of large structures has occurred because of aging. Displacement measurement is important for maintenance. There are various methods in the vertical and horizontal directions for displacement measurement of distant objects using optical method. However, there are few methods to measure displacement for a camera direction. In this paper, the authors propose and demonstrate a method to generate a fringe pattern along the depth direction using three-beam interferometry in combination with fringe power analysis. In three-beam interferometry, the fringe pattern along the depth direction appears by superimposing each two-beam interference fringe. Therefore, the power distribution of the fringe pattern appears along the depth direction. This method enables us to directly obtain the three-dimensional (3D) shape and displacement using the fringe pattern along the depth direction. Our method intended for wide application with 3D shape measurements and out-of-plane displacement measurements for the inspection and maintenance of large constructions. As the first step of developing a device for 3D shape and displacement measurement, in this paper, simulation and an experiment were used to confirm that depth directional patterns appeared.

Next, the aluminum plate consisting of the movable part and the fixed part was measured. From the results, it was confirmed that the phase was changed by the displacement of the object. Finally, the phase difference was acquired by slightly displacing the movable part of the aluminum plate in the x, y, and z directions. From the results, it confirmed that sensitivity vectors from multiple directions can be obtained by a single camera. These results was presented at International Workshop on Holography and Related Technologies 2019 (IWH2019).
- 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 特別研究員奨励費, 特別研究員奨励費, 北海道大学, 26 Apr. 2017 - 31 Mar. 2019高分解能かつ高速な3次元測定の実現に向けた新規光断層撮影法の開発と応用本研究の目的は,「高い深さ分解能」及び,「3次元像の一括取得による超高速計測」を実現する仮想位相共役を用いた光断層撮影法(VPC-OT: Virtual Phase Conjugation based Optical Tomography)において「生体への応用に向けた性能向上」と,「実際に生体に応用する場合の動作実証・実用的なシステムの構築」を行い,皮膚・血管等の表層計測への応用の可能性を示すことにある.本目的の達成に向けて,本年度は以下の課題に取り組んだ. まず,伝達関数による高速計算手法を用いることによって仮想レンズのシフトにおける計算時間が高速化できること示した.また,NVIDIA社提供のGPU計算用ライブラリであるCompute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA)を用いた超並列計算を導入した.これらを組み合わせて,これまでの光波伝搬計算をそのまま用いる手法と比べ,実験において約14倍の高速化が可能であることを示した. 次に,位相分布(屈折率分布)の断層計測及び再生像の高画質化に向けて,窓関数を用いた計測面の強度分布の制御手法について検討した.カエル血球が封入されたプレパラート試料,及び分解能テストパターンを計測し,従来OCTに対して,VPC-OTが約2倍の深さ分解能で3次元強度・位相イメージングが可能であることを実験的に示した. 加えて,当初の研究目的を超えた内容として,仮想位相共役を用いたホロフラフィックメモリの多重記録方式を新たに提案し,従来の多重記録方式と比べて記録密度が約1.9倍向上することを解析的に示した.
