- Observers can focus their attention on task-relevant items in visual search when they have prior knowledge about the target's properties (i.e., positive cues). However, little is known about how negative cues, which specify the features of task-irrelevant items, can be used to guide attention away from distractors and how their effects differ from those of positive cues. It has been proposed that when a distractor color is cued, people would first select the to-be-ignored items early in search and then inhibit them later. The present study investigated how the effects of positive and negative cues differ throughout the visual search process. The results showed that positive cues sped up the early stage of visual search and that negative cues led to initial selection for inhibition. We further found that visual search with negative cues was more inefficient than that with positive cues even at later stages, suggesting that sustained inhibition is needed throughout the visual search process. Taken together, the results indicate that positive and negative cues have different functions: prior knowledge about target features can weight task-relevant information at early stages of visual search, and negative cues are used more inefficiently even at later stages of visual search.Oct. 2018, Acta psychologica, 190, 85 - 94, English, International magazine[Refereed]Scientific journal

- The search performance for targets is improved when the targets appear in a specific location more frequently than in other locations. Although this phenomenon, called the "probability cueing effect," has been reported in past studies, it is unclear whether probability cueing is driven by statistical learning and/or intertrial facilitation of the target location. We investigated the underlying mechanisms for probability cueing effects by manipulating probabilities and repetitions of the target appearance at each target location. The first experiment demonstrated that the reaction time benefits of both statistical learning and intertrial facilitation contributed to the probability cueing effect. In contrast, the second and third experiments demonstrated that the probability cueing effect did not occur when target location repetitions on consecutive trials were fully or partially restricted. Also, any intertrial facilitation effects disappeared if there were more than one intervening trials. These results suggest that consecutive target location repetitions throughout the experiment facilitate learning of the target location probability.Corresponding, Elsevier BV, Nov. 2012, Vision research, 73, 23 - 9, English, International magazine[Refereed]Scientific journal

- If the probability that a target item in a visual task is presented at a given location or with a given feature is high, the reaction times for biased targets are shorter than those for low probability targets. However, the relationship between manipulation of probabilistic information and this probability effect is unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of the spatial and nonspatial probabilities associated with the onset of targets on attentional deployment. When targets appeared at high probability locations, reaction times for target discrimination were faster than those that appeared at less likely locations (Experiment 1). However, such a probability advantage did not appear when the targets' appearances were associated with the shapes of the placeholders, regardless of their locations (Experiment 2a). The probability effect reoccurred when participants were informed of the nonspatial probabilistic manipulation (Experiment 2b). These results suggest that the spatial probability is effective as an attentional cue without awareness, whereas the nonspatial probability is not.Corresponding, The Japanese Psychonomic Society, Sep. 2011, The Japanese Journal of Psychonomic Science, 30(1) (1), 56 - 64, Japanese

First, from the results of a sensitivity evaluation task for paintings, we found that beauty and ugliness, liking and disliking, and artistry differ greatly among individuals and are difficult to explain by low-order image characteristics of stimuli such as image color statistics. Next, using the psychological reverse correlation method, we investigated whether it is possible to visualize the ideal image of facial beauty and ugliness. The results showed that it is possible to visualize the ideal image of facial aesthetics and ugliness from the results of the 2AFC aesthetics and ugliness sensitivity evaluation task with 2000 to 2500 trials.

This study inquired the relationship between film directors' expressions and viewers trajectories of attention during watching movies by using eye tracking device. And this study also historicized the research of viewers' attention within the history of film studies. This study summarized that this kind of research started with Hugo Munsterberg in 1916 and developed by David Bordwell in the 1980s with his cognitive approach. Then some film scholars began to utilize eye tracker from the 2000s to reconfirming what film directors practiced for a long decade.

Under the daily environments including several type of information, cognitive control needs to select information to process and to inhibit task-irrelevant information because of the cognitive capacity limitation. However, there are cases in which task-irrelevant and unnecessary information is processed irrespective of intention. In this research project aim to analysis the attentional control on the execution of multitask using psychological experiments and measuring event-related brain potentials. As the results, we obtained several suggestions that the relationship between distracting effects and personal psychological traits, as well as differences of distracting effects due to the predictability and the saliency of the task-irrelevant information.Competitive research funding

Precious studies suggested that threat related emotional faces captured attention whereas they appeared as task-irrelevant stimuli. We examined the mechanisms for rejecting the task-irrelevant information during the high cognitive load tasks. Also, we focused on the individual differences of the inhibition process. The results suggested that high anxiety individuals showed difficulty of top-down control over negative emotional task-irrelevant distractors than low anxiety group. However, for positive emotional task-irrelevant distractors, high anxiety individuals succeed to reject them when the task load was low. These results could help understanding the mechanisms of focusing attention in the high distracting circumstances especially high social anxiety people.

Overall, the speakers showed better mora-timing rhythm when they were in a relaxed condition. The major differences between relaxed and stressed (tense) situations were seen in pitch characteristics and dis-fluency markers, such as fillers and pauses.

We conducted experiments of haptic search by sighted people to examine the prevalence effect, which had been examined in visual search, and did experiments of tactile maps by sighted and blind people. By measuring spatiotemporal property of those search processes, we clarified the mechanisms of attentional process in haptics.

The major findings are as follows: (1)Sscores on the RST, which places a cognitive load on syntactic processing in particular, was significantly poorer than those of other types of RSTs and correlated significantly with English proficiency scores. English proficiency largely depends on the degree of automatization of syntactic processing. (2)The process required to carry out the sentence building task(syntactic processing) becomes more automatic as the learners' fluency level increases, and the learners with higher L2 fluency had the option of allocating more of their cognitive resources to story comprehension than did the learners with lower L2 fluency.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kobe University, 2011 - 2013In this study, we investigated how humans detect and recognize threat-related information in the environment. We conducted experiments that used angry, neutral, and happy facial expressions; angry faces were used as threat-related stimuli. We manipulated task load, and examined whether threat-related information affects executive cognitive processes, even when they are completely task-irrelevant. The results showed a significant effect of threat-related information on the task in the high load condition. When the task load was high and angry faces were presented in the same display, cognitive processing of the central task was disrupted. These results indicate that threat-related information is difficult to avoid, and that it is processed without intention. Also, a negative correlation was revealed between individual anxiety levels and detection sensitivity.
