- We considered four factors that could have increased the water level in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta: (1) sea level rise, (2) land subsidence, (3) flood, and (4) decrease in flood mitigation functions due to dyke constructions. First, we classified the Delta into two groups; one area is dominated by flows from upstream, while the other is mainly dominated by tide. Moreover, we obtained the trend of maximum and minimum water level. We used NDVI to estimate the area of dyke construction. It is found that the dyke area does not coincide with the area of maximum water level increase. The area with the maximum water level increase correlates with the area with the minimum water level increase. The area with the minimum water level increase is located in the tide-dominated zone, indicating that the increase in the maximum water level is caused by the sea level rise and land subsidence.THE JAPAN SOCIETY OF HYDROLOGY AND WATER RESOURCES, 2014, Proceeding of Annual Conference, 27, 100058 - 100058, Japanese
- Abundant temporal information of MODIS data is useful for capturing phenological pattern of crops and for estimating their productivity with high reliability. However, the spatial resolution of MODIS data is so coarse that several types of land cover may simultaneously occur within a pixel, thus it is made difficult to extract pure spectral response of crops from MODIS data only. In this study, we tried to estimate pure NDVI seasonal profiles of irrigated crops in south central Turkey by the application of the unmixing model in combination with precise land cover maps derived from Landsat TM images. Estimated profiles showed a good agreement with the NDVI seasonal profiles from pure pixels with an average relative error of 0.05 for crops. The results also agreed well with the crop calendar of the area. A fair correlation (R2=0.74) was found between the estimated NDVI and crop coefficient (Kc) of the irrigation planning in the area at full cover, indicating that the estimated NDVI can be employed to estimate evapotranspiration to some extent.Japanese Society of Irrigation, Draninage and Rural Enginnering, Oct. 2013, Irrigation drainage and rural engineering Journal, 81(5) (5), 1 - 9, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- The authors are now developing a distributed water balance model for areas with irrigated agriculture. Development policies and results of application of the model will be provided in the presentation.THE JAPAN SOCIETY OF HYDROLOGY AND WATER RESOURCES, 2006, Proceeding of Annual Conference, 19, 79 - 79
Water balance in areas with irrigated agriculture is decided not only by types of crop, area of farm and meteorological conditions but also by water management at farm-level, management policy of each irrigation project, physical structure and spatial arrangement of irrigation-drainage facilities, landuse pattern, etc. The model that the authors are developing takes the above mentioned factors into acount, and aims to provide detailed and precise information about water use and water balance in areas with irrigated agriculture. - Because the Japanese archipelago is surrounded by sea and important social-economic activities concentrate in areas below sea-level, it is prerequisite to predict impacts of sea-level rise on groundwater systems in coastal aquifers. For applying numerical models to areas with inclined land surface which allows storage of surface water, we developed a simulation code, SIFEC, based on coupling of finite elements for density-dependent flow and method of characteristics linked with finite elements for mass transport. To improve accuracy for interpolating concentrations in solving transport equation, single-step reverse particle tracking is used with biquadratic interpolation scheme. Accuracy of the technique was compared with results of experiments and other simulation techniques, and excellent results were obtained.Japan Society of Civil Engineers, May 2005, Doboku Gakkai Ronbunshu, (790) (790), 35 - 48, Japanese
- Spatial analysis of soil salinity, micro-topography, groundwater level and electrical conductivity of groundwater before and after 150mm autumn ponding irrigation (leaching irrigation) was carried out to examine cause of heterogeneous soil salinity distribution in a poor drainage field in the Hetao irrigation district in Inner Mongolia, China. After 150mm of leaching irrigation, soil salinity and groundwater EC decreased, however heterogeneous distribution patterns were not greatly modified. Salt leaching effect was greater near the inlet and decreased towards outlet. Decrease of groundwater EC was small near the inlet and became greater towards outlet. Relationship between micro-topography and soil salinity proves that undulation regulated amount of infiltration water and lead to generating of spatial variability of soil salinity. While fundamental desalinization is difficult because of poor drainage, heterogeneous soil salinity distribution could be reduced to some extent by uniform supply of irrigation water. The Japanese Society of Irrigation, Drainage and Rural Engineering, 2004, Transactions of The Japanese Society of Irrigation, Drainage and Reclamation Engineering, 2004(234) (234), 601 - 608
- To analyze temporal and spatial variability of soil salinity in poor drainage area in the Hetao irrigation district of Inner Mongolia, China, measurements were made using an electromagnetic induction method (EIM) in September 2002 and in August and September 2003. During the observation periods, hydraulic gradient of ground water ranged between 1/480 and 1/1, 600 while soil hydraulic conductivity ranged 10-5cm s-1 and 10-7cm s-1, which confirmed very limited lateral flow of groundwater. Spatial variability of EC of groundwater was high, and in each well, EC remained almost constant even after large amount of leaching irrigation in 2003. Distribution pattern of soil salinity scanned by the EIM did not change greatly with total of 325mm of irrigation applied between 2002 and 2003, nor with 150mm of leaching irrigation in 2003. As a conclusion, leaching irrigation was only effective in desalinization of root zone, however spatial variability of soil salinity was difficult to reduce without discharge of salt from the field. The Japanese Society of Irrigation, Drainage and Rural Engineering, 2004, Transactions of The Japanese Society of Irrigation, Drainage and Reclamation Engineering, 2004(233) (233), 469 - 476
- Apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) measured by Electromagnetic Induction Method (EIM) at the Hetao irrigation district in China was compared with EC1: 5 of soil water extract. Soil salinities of three soil depths (0-0.3, 0.3-0.6, 0.6-0.9m) under field capacity conditions were estimated using a linear three layers model. As a result, following became clear; 1) a good correlation was obtained between ECa and average EC1:5 of 0.9m deep soil profile for volumetric water content ranging from approximately 0.33m3·m-3 to 0.42m3 ·m-3, 2) salinity profiles could be classified with difference of two different ECa values of different sensing depth (ECv, ECh) and 3) fare estimates of salinity of three soil horizons could be made with a combination of measured ECh and difference between ECv and ECh.The Japanese Society of Irrigation, Drainage and Rural Engineering, 2003, Transactions of The Japanese Society of Irrigation, Drainage and Reclamation Engineering, 2003(227) (227), 665 - 671

A major outcome is as follows. We were able to present the global distribution of potential areas where water markets could be instituted by analyzing 296 water laws. This was realized by taking into account a set of three provisions in a legal sense. In addition, we investigated a few more globally distributed conditions. Another output in this research as a basic development of necessary technology for this objective is a development of an advanced satellite remote sensing technology to grasp water crisis. In addition, some studies on economics of global water resources were carried out.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), 31 Oct. 2012 - 31 Mar. 2015Development of Integrated Indices on Water Management Performance for Wise IrrigationThe assessment indices of irrigation management performance have been developed, which is necessary to the study of re-evaluation of the role of irrigation management and its improvement, under the forth-coming conditions of population growth and increase food demand of the world and agricultural and rural structural change in Japan, as well as global climate change. Based on the indices that have been used in the previous and on-going researches and improvement projects, the case studies and diagnosis have been carried for observation and analysis of the actual situation from the perspective of evaluating the significance and the function of cooperation in the foundation of irrigation. In the research, the Nile Delta of Egypt and the Echigawa District of Japan are selected as major case areas. In Egypt, even the basis of the method has been developed to reconstruct and evaluate the historical formation process of cooperation in irrigation management.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), 2007 - 2010Precipitation change in western China during Qing Era reconstructed with the official document dataEnormous amount of "precipitation data" was found in official documents in Qing Dynasty, preserved in the First Historical Archives of China. It was found that the "precipitation data" are not the so called precipitation but the penetration depth of rain water into the surface soil. With in situ observations and experiments, hence, a relation between precipitation and the penetration depth was established, with which the document data were converted into precipitation data. As the results, it was found that the seasonal variation and areal pattern of precipitation were roughly consistent with those at present. The total amount, on the other hand, has decreased since the early 19th century. It was concluded, however, that for the recent water shortages, the human activities are more responsible than such a climate change.

- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, 2007 - 2009Analysis of the Hydrological Environment in Agricultural Regions Using the Method of Environment Traceability. This study examined hydrological environment in irrigated area, especially on dynamics of water and salt using environmental traceability method. The water quality analysis confirmed that environmental tracers, D/H, δ^<18>O, and ^<87>Sr/^<86>Sr, can be used as tracer of surface water and groundwater in irrigated area. It proved that the ^<87>Sr/^<86>Sr can be used as tracer of salt. Quantitative analysis using the ^<87>Sr/^<86>Sr revealed that the irrigation area transitioned from primary salinization formed by old seawater to secondary salinization of salt from fertilizer and irrigation water due to anthropogenic agricultural process.
