- Eulerian finite volume method using Lagrangian markers with reference map for incompressible fluid–structure interaction problemsWe propose a monolithic fluid–structure interaction (FSI) method that presents the advantages of both the reference map technique (RMT) and the Lagrangian Markers approach on a unified, cell-centered finite volume Eulerian framework. Full Eulerian methods that use a Cartesian mesh are attractive for FSI problems that require large-scale computing and involve complex geometries and large solid deformations. However, conventional full Eulerian methods use the velocity gradient to evaluate solid deformations, hence they suffer from numerical instability caused by the discontinuity of the velocity gradient near the interface. In this work, we develop a novel algorithm that interpolates and transfers a reference mapping information field between a collection of Lagrangian Markers and a Eulerian finite volume framework. As a result of integrating these approaches, our method is able to (1) evaluate solid deformations without computing the velocity gradient in the Eulerian framework thanks to RMT, and (2) remove the numerical dissipation of interfaces and internal variables caused by advection in the full Eulerian RMT, thanks to the use of the Lagrangian Markers to compute the constitutive equations. We illustrate with numerical examples that the proposed method preserves geometrical features and yields more accurate results for the deformation and energy than conventional Eulerian FSI method and the full Eulerian RMT.Apr. 2024, Computers & Fluids, 274, 106210, EnglishScientific journal

- As evidenced by the worldwide pandemic, respiratory infectious diseases and their airborne transmission must be studied to safeguard public health. This study focuses on the emission and transport of speech-generated droplets, which can pose risk of infection depending on the loudness of the speech, its duration and the initial angle of exhalation. We have numerically investigated the transport of these droplets into the human respiratory tract by way of a natural breathing cycle in order to predict the infection probability of three strains of SARS-CoV-2 on a person who is listening at a one-meter distance. Numerical methods were used to set the boundary conditions of the speaking and breathing models and large eddy simulation (LES) was used for the unsteady simulation of approximately 10 breathing cycles. Four different mouth angles when speaking were contrasted to evaluate real conditions of human communication and the possibility of infection. Breathed virions were counted using two different approaches: the breathing zone of influence and direction deposition on the tissue. Our results show that infection probability drastically changes based on the mouth angle and the breathing zone of influence overpredicts the inhalation risk in all cases. We conclude that to portray real conditions, the probability of infection should be based on direct tissue deposition results to avoid overprediction and that several mouth angles must be considered in future analyses.Public Library of Science (PLoS), Mar. 2023, PLOS Computational Biology, 19(3) (3), e1010972 - e1010972, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Abstract A numerical simulation of sibilant /s/ production with the realistically moving vocal tract was conducted to investigate the flow and acoustic characteristics during the articulation process of velopharyngeal closure and tongue movement. The articulation process was simulated from the end of /u/ to the middle of /s/ in the Japanese word /usui/, including the tongue elevation and the velopharyngeal valve closure. The time-dependent vocal tract geometry was reconstructed from the computed tomography scan. The moving immersed boundary method with the hierarchical structure grid was adopted to approach the complex geometry of the human speech organs. The acoustic characteristics during the co-articulation process were observed and consistent with the acoustic measurement for the subject of the scan. The further simulations with the different closing speeds of the velopharyngeal closure showed that the far-field sound during the co-articulation process was amplified with the slower closing case, and the velum closure speed was inverse proportional to the sound amplitude with the slope value of − 35.3 dB s/m. This indicates possible phonation of indistinguishable aeroacoustics sound between /u/ and /s/ with slower velopharyngeal closure.Corresponding, Springer Science and Business Media LLC, Sep. 2022, Scientific Reports, 12(1) (1), English[Refereed]Scientific journal
- Abstract Dental professionals are at high risk of exposure to communicable diseases during clinical practice, but many dental clinics provide clinical care in closed spaces. Therefore, it is essential to develop efficient ventilation methods in dental clinics that do not rely on natural ventilation. In this study, to clarify the factors that cause air retention in dental offices, we conducted computational flow dynamics simulations focusing on (1) the flow path from the entrance to the exhaust port and (2) the presence of partitions. A three-dimensional model of a dental clinic with three dental chairs was created, and simulations were conducted for scenarios with and without partitions with different entrance and exhaust port positions. Evaluation of these simulations on the basis of the age of air, an indicator of ventilation efficiency, showed that the value of the air age near the partition was locally high in the scenarios with partitions. In the scenarios where the exhaust port was located close to the entrance, the air age near the exhaust port was high, regardless of the presence of a partition. In addition to wearing protective clothing and sterilizing instruments, it is important to consider air quality improvement as a countermeasure against airborne and droplet infections, such as virus infections, in dental clinics.Springer Science and Business Media LLC, Aug. 2022, Scientific Reports, 12(1) (1), English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- The physical variables involved in a flow field are of very different scales to those of the aeroacoustic field within the flow. Thus, direct aeroacoustic computations (DACs) require extremely small time steps to capture the fluctuations in the aeroacoustic field and stabilize the numerical scheme. As a result, the computation time for DACs can be very long. This paper describes an implicit Adaptively Switched Time Stepping (ASTS) scheme that enables the use of larger time steps when solving DAC problems. ASTS is based on the adaptive selection of the time stepping scheme according to the value of the residual. Early in the iteration process, an artificial time term is used to afford larger time steps while ensuring that the numerical scheme remains stable. Once the residual is less than some preset reference value, the artificial time term is removed, thus eliminating the Newton linearization error. Simulation results show that ASTS can reduce the computational cost of DACs by a factor of more than eight while maintaining the required level of accuracy.Last, AIP Publishing, Mar. 2022, AIP Advances, 12(3) (3), 035340 - 035340, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- In recent decades, growing efforts have been devoted to coupling the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM), i.e., CFD-DEM coupling methods, to account for particle–fluid interactions. However, it remains a challenging task for the well-known Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) belonging to the resolved CFD-DEM methods to improve the computational efficiency of large particles occupying several fluid cells and to simulate the interactions between irregularly shaped particles and fluids. In this paper, we present a novel unresolved CFD-DEM method to achieve the end. The main idea of the presented method is to split a large particle into multiple small spherical particles without overlapping using the Bonded-Particle Method (BPM), and simulate the particle–fluid interactions based on each small particle in the context of an unresolved CFD-DEM method. We validate the accuracy and efficiency of the novel method by comparing our numerical results of spherical particles in viscous fluids with those calculated using the IBM and existing experimental data. The presented method is further applied to the irregular large particle–fluid interaction problems, and the numerical results demonstrate the capacity of our method in simulating the motions of nonspherical large particles in the fluid.World Scientific Pub Co Pte Lt, Jun. 2021, International Journal of Computational Methods, 2150047 - 2150047, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Public transportation is required to have effective measures against the new corona infection. In this study, we investigated the actual condition of ventilation, which is said to be the infection route of the virus, and examined the countermeasures in addition, the behavior of the particles when they were diffused into the route bus was measured. PSL and artificial saliva were used as the particles. PSL tends to be deposited easily, so the particle concentration is too low. It may lead to evaluation. Also, the particle collection ability of the aerosol filter was evaluated. From this result, it was found that it has the same effect as window opening ventilation.Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, 2021, Transactions of Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, 52(5) (5), 1013 - 1020, Japanese[Refereed]

To obtain the conceptual structure of an automobile frame from a large area of metal blocks by topology optimization, a volume constraint of less than 1% and sufficient element resolution are required. By using the building cube method framework, usually a finite volume method solver using hierarchical orthogonal lattices, as a voxel finite element method solver for orthogonal lattices with connectivity, we perform iterative topology optimization in a massively parallel environment. Topology optimization of billions of elements intended for a vehicle frame is performed using tens of thousands of processors and its parallel performance is measured.

- The effects of on-road disturbances on the aerodynamic drag are attracting attention in order to accurately evaluate the fuel efficiency of an automobile on a road. The present study investigated the effects of cornering motion on automobile aerodynamics, especially focusing on the aerodynamic drag. Using a towing tank facility, measurements of the fluid-dynamic force acting on Ahmed models during steady-state cornering were conducted in water. The investigation included Ahmed models with slant angles θ = 25° and 35°, reproducing the wake structures of two different types of automobiles. The drag increase due to steady-state cornering motion was experimentally measured, and showed good agreement with previous numerical research, with the measurements conducted at a Reynolds number of 6 × 105, based on the model length. The Ahmed model with θ = 35° showed a greater drag increase due to the steady-state cornering motion than that with θ = 25°, and it reached 15% of the total drag at a corner with a radius that was 10 times the vehicle length. The results indicated that the effect of the cornering motion on the automobile aerodynamics would be more important, depending on the type of automobile and its wake characteristics.MDPI AG, Dec. 2020, Energies, 13(24) (24), 6592 - 6592, English[Refereed]Scientific journal

The ski jumper rapidly changes the body posture from crouching to flight posture during take off. In this study, the relationship between flight distance and take-off motion, in terms of trunk angle of attack and lift-drag ratio, was investigated through aerodynamics simulations that reproduce the take-off motion dynamically. The trunk angle of attack was extracted from two-dimensional image in the sagittal plane of the take-off motion. From the results of the numerical simulation it was found that athletes with higher lift-drag ratio at the initial take-off posture had longer flight distance and the frontal pressure on these athletes was relatively lower.

- Unsteady aerodynamic forces and flow structures around a road vehicle in dynamic motion were investigated in this study. The special focus was on the aerodynamic rolling moment acting on the vehicle in multiple degrees of freedom motion, namely, roll, yaw and a combination of these two motions. The target model was a simplified hatchback type vehicle in full scale. Unsteady computational fluid dynamic technique with a moving boundary method was applied to predict the transient aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the vehicle, and transient three dimensional flow structures were extracted to explain the flow mechanisms which cause the unsteady aerodynamics. The numerical method was first validated in the stationary case by comparing its results with wind tunnel data. Then the unsteady characteristics of the aerodynamic rolling moment was discussed based on the phase-shift to the vehicles angular motion as input and its gain. The results indicated that the rolling moment in the combined rolling and yawing motion showed a higher aerodynamic damping effect on the rolling motion than in the cases of monotonic rolling, yawing or the arithmetic sum of these two results. It was confirmed that the pressure changes in the middle and the rear of the underbody contributed to the difference of the aerodynamic damping of the rolling motion. The mechanisms causing the pressure changes on the underbody were explained by the difference of flow structures behind the front wheelhouse and around the rear underbody.日本機械学会, 2016, Transactions of the JSME, 82(835) (835), 15 - 00675-15-00675, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- In order to clarify unsteady flow structure's behavior that improves vehicle's high-speed stability during steering input, on-road analysis was conducted. The analysis was conducted on two vehicles' aerodynamic specifications which were produced by configuring two different shapes from a single vehicle. During high speed driving while steering input in sinusoidal waveform was being applied, these two vehicles were analyzed focusing on the relationships between dynamic movements, unsteady forces affecting on vehicle's body surface and unsteady behavior of flow structure. As a result, it was clarified that there existed a unsteady behavior of flow structure that aerodynamically control to stabilize vehicle's steering response motion in vertical and yawing direction. It was also clarified that this aerodynamic force that control to stabilize vehicle's steering response motion was caused by behaviors of flow structure beside body just behind front tire which reduced and expand its vertical scale during high-speed driving with steering input. Furthermore, it was shown that this behavior of flow structure was caused by weakening vortex structure which came out and separated from the gap between the upper rear side of the front wheel and the front wheel arch. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014, TRANSACTIONS OF THE JAPAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS Series A, 80(809) (809), 9 - FE0009, Japanese[Refereed]Scientific journal

- Take-off motion of ski jumping was numerically studied. The 1/10 scale model was adopted as analysis model and its trunk angle was dynamically changed during the motion. Large Eddy Simulation technique was adopted to capture the unsteady aerodynamic forces acting on the jumper. By comparing the results with the quasi-steady analysis, it was found that separation of flow around the back of the jumper generates unsteady vortex structures, which generate substantial amount of unsteady aerodynamic forces. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2009, The proceedings of the JSME annual meeting, 2009, 285 - 286, Japanese

- The objective of this study is to find out a way to reduce aerodynamic drag of the vehicle body focusing on the underbody flow. LES computations were performed for a simplified vehicle body using ca. 25 million meshes. It was found from the comparison with the experiment that LES well reproduces mean flow field around the vehicle. Large scale LES computation can be an effective tool to evaluate vehicle aerodynamic characteristics. Comparisons with RANS results were also made. - There are various numerical methods for simulating flow fields involving moving boundaries. In this study, the moving boundary fitted grid method and overset grid method are used for computing fluid flow around a cylinder in a cylindrical vessel. The numerical results are compared with the result obtained by rotating fixed coordinate systems, which can simulate moving boundary problem on stationary coordinate systems without grid moving and deformation. The computational accuracy of different numerical method are investigated. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2006, The proceedings of the JSME annual meeting, 2006, 419 - 420, Japanese
- In this research, flow fields around Gyro-Mill type wind turbine were simulated at Re=4×10^3 by numerical method. Numerical results has shown that the rotation of the wind turbine is more difficult to be generated as Reynolds number decreases, because of a low lift/drag ratio at the low Reynolds number and an interference between blade and vortices. The torque coefficient could be varied from negative quadrant to positive quadrant utilizing a pitch control method based on a knowledge found by an analysis of drag type wind turbine. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2005, The proceedings of the JSME annual meeting, 2005, 163 - 164, Japanese
- In this paper, flows around a square array of nine cylinders are investigated. The pressures on the surface of cylinders are measured by experiment of the wind tunnel. The effects of distance between neighboring cylinders on pressure distribution are investigated and several flow patterns are found. - The drag and lift coefficients of a flat-plate elastic wing subjected to a pitching motion were experimentally measured, and the effect of deformation due to fluid force on such an aerodynamic coefficients were investigated by comparing the results with those of a rigid wing. In the case without pitching motion, it was found that both the coefficients of an elastic wing considerably decrease as the Reynolds number increase, which is enhanced as flexibility increases, whereas those of a rigid wing is almost constant within the Reynolds-number range tested here. In the case with pitching motion, in addition to the similar reduction of the drag coefficient in the elastic wing, phase lag of the drag and lift coefficients was observed between the rigid and the elastic wing. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2005, The proceedings of the JSME annual meeting, 2005, 175 - 176, Japanese
- It is known that flow structures similar to the famous Taylor vortex can be observed between an outer stationary cylinder and an inner rotating square cylinder, and one of their characteristic features is recognized to be the generation of waves at the boundary of each vortex cell and their propagation toward the outer cylinder wall. The main objective of this study is to investigate the generation process of the waves by using experimental and numerical visualization techniques. It was identified that, in addition to the characteristic vortex and wave structures, remarkable flow appears at the corner of the top (or equivalently the bottom) wall and the edge of the inner cylinder. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2005, The proceedings of the JSME annual meeting, 2005, 165 - 166, Japanese
- LES and DNS of accelerating plane channel flows were conducted to investigate the validity of LES to such a flow. From the DNS results, it was observed that a rather rapid acceleration process consists of two parts: the former is the increase of the streamwise turbulent intensity, or corresponding elongation of the sublayer streaks, and the latter is the re-distribution of the turbulence to the other two directions. It was found that LES with a simple eddy viscosity model could not reproduce the latter re-distribution process at both coarser and finer grid resolutions tested here, despite the better prediction of the former process regardless of the adopted grid resolution. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2005, The proceedings of the JSME annual meeting, 2005, 43 - 44, Japanese

- In this paper, the thermally stratified boundary layer developed over a rough-wall is investigated. Two kinds of turbulent boundary layer flow with α=1/7 and α=1/4 are generated by placing roughness elements on the wall of wind tunnel, in which the floor and flow temperatures can be controlled. The changes of the turbulence characteristics of the neutral flow on the stability are shown as follows : 1) The exponent of velocity profiles increases with stability. 2) The turbulent intensity decreases with stability near wall area. 3) The effect of thermal stratification on turbulence become obvious at larger exponent of velocity profile. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2002, The proceedings of the JSME annual meeting, 2002, 67 - 68, Japanese
- Three-dimensional organized structures of the plane and round impinging jets were investigated by the visualized images obtained by DNS. We especially focused on the effect of the spanwise of azimuthal disturbances imposed at the inlet velocity on the eddy structures. Three wavelength of λ/πD=1/3,1/4 and 1/6 were tested in this study, where D is the width or the diameter of the inlet nozzle. The round jet showed definite instability at λ/πD=1/6 while the plane jet was found to show almost equivalent sensitivity to all modes tested here. As regards the eddy structures at the stagnation region, famous twin vortices along the impinging plate of plane jets were reproduced and their number of pairs were found to agree well with the spanwise wave number imposed at the inlet. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2002, The proceedings of the JSME annual meeting, 2002, 247 - 248, Japanese
- Numerical prediction of aerodynamic sound is required to reproduce with sufficient accuracy to the fluctuating component of a flow field and a pressure field. In this research, LES was applied to the flow field around a two dimensional rectangular cylinder and compare with upwind finite difference method. The flow field were reproduced with high precision and the parameters which governs aerodynamic sound were evaluated. Consequently, the usefulness of LES was shown from the point of the correlativity of pressure of the spanwise direction. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2002, The proceedings of the JSME annual meeting, 2002, 303 - 304, Japanese

- The drawbacks of the dynamic sub-grid scale eddy viscosity model proposed by Germano et al. in 1991 are that homogeneous direction of turbulence is required to eliminate numerical instability due to negative eddy viscosity and that the model is unable to predict sub-grid scale turbulent energy backscattering from sub-grid scale to grid scale. In the present study, the localized dynamic sub-grid scale model proposed by Meneveau et al. in 1994 was utilized with the mixed sub-grid scale model proposed by Vreman et al. in 1994 to eliminate these shortcomings. - 0303 Large-Eddy Simulation of Smooth and Roughness Spheres around the Critical Reynolds NumberThe present study has conducted large-eddy simulation (LES) of smooth and golf ball around the critical Reynolds number. Drag coefficients and the flow field around the sphere and the golf ball have been analyzed. The result shows that the surface roughness on the golf ball surface doesn't strongly affect the flow behavior in the subcritical regime. However, the surface roughness could result in the drag crisis of golf ball occurring at a lower Reynolds number in the supercritical regime compared with the smooth sphere. This is because the flow becomes instable when it passes the dimples at the supercritical Reynolds number and could consequently travel further downstream. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 25 Oct. 2014, Fluids engineering conference ..., 2014, "0303 - 1"-"0303-2", English

- G0705 LES Analysis of Pressure Change Generated by a High-speed Train Passing Through a TunnelCompression waves are generated and propagate through a tunnel when a high-speed train enters a tunnel. These waves affect a tunnel wall and ride comfort. These pressure changes are complex when two trains pass by each other in a tunnel. Therefore, it is necessary to predict these pressure changes. We did 3-dimentional large eddy simulation that takes account of the viscosity. Thus, we predicted compression waves, expansion waves, pressure changes at a tunnel wall and fluid force acting on a train under condition of the two trains passing by in a tunnel. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 09 Nov. 2013, Fluids engineering conference ..., 2013, "G0705 - 01"-"G0705-02", Japanese
- 1198 EFFECT OF SURFACE HEATING ON THE DRAG FORCE ON THE SPHERE AT CRITICAL REYNOLDS NUMBERThe characteristics of separation flow past a heated sphere are investigated at around critical Reynolds number in conditions using three-dimensional numerical simulation in which temperature dependence of fluid properties such as density and viscosity is exactly considered. Boussinesq approximation is no longer applicable due to large temperature difference adopted in this study. The result shows that drag coefficient of the heated sphere in drag crisis region becomes larger than that of the unheated case and it increases up to the coefficient found in subcritical region. This is because the temperature difference between the sphere and ambient fluid strongly affects the flow separation points and reattachment resulting in small recovery of the pressure in the wake and reduction of the temporal fluctuation of the lift force acting on the sphere. These effects are considered to attribute to the temperature dependence of fluid properties in the vicinity of the sphere and effect on the transient of the boundary surface in critical region. The order of the buoyancy effect becomes relatively small compared to inertia effect in present Reynolds number region so that the buoyancy does not have a significant effect on the fluid force on the sphere. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 16 Sep. 2013, Jets, wakes and separated flows : proceedings of International Conference on Jets, Wakes and Separated Flows, ICJWSF, 2013(4) (4), "1198 - 1"-"1198-4", English
- W011001 Large Scale Parallel Computation for Industrial ApplicationsApplication of large-scale parallel computational fluid dynamics to industrial problems is discussed, with its focus on vehicle aerodynamics. Issues to realize the industrial CFD using high-performance computing environment are mentioned in the context of mesh generation and the peak performance of application software. Capability and limitations of both unstructured and structured grids are demonstrated by considering the complicated and deficient CAD geometry data used in real product development process and the near future computer architecture. Finally it is discussed that how such HPC-CFD helps to realize innovative industrial processes. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 08 Sep. 2013, Mechanical Engineering Congress, Japan, 2013, "W011001 - 1"-"W011001-3", Japanese
- J011012 Large scale vehicle aerodynamics simulation with complex geometry using the hierarchical Cartesian grid approachMethodology is developed to reduce manual work in preparing geometry for simulation when working with dirty computer-aided-design data. A method that uses arbitrary boundary representation is proposed with a dummy-cell technique based on a Cartesian grid and immersed boundary method. The complicated geometry is degenerated into cell-oriented values. The advantage is that the user can handle data that have a gap, overlap or sharp edge without any special preprocessing. The force term of the immersed boundary method is directly imposed on an arbitrary ghost cell by linear interpolation of the velocity, which is defined according to the distance between the cell-centered position and the crossing point with the grid line. The intersection point is obtained from the face center and normal of the characteristic wall. A calculation example of a full vehicle model provided by an automotive company is presented, and robust flow field results are obtained. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 08 Sep. 2013, Mechanical Engineering Congress, Japan, 2013, "J011012 - 1"-"J011012-4", Japanese

Intention of micro-pressure wave is roughly proportional to pressure gradient. We are obtain it 3-dimentional large eddy simulation. The train enters to the tunnel at three different tunnel pattern, one is only tunnel, the other pattern is with portal hood without window, and the other is hood with window. This simulation uses weakly-compressible fluid with involvement of viscosity analysis method and sliding mesh method. Analysis result show that hood and window have slow the formation of a compression wave. So, maximum pressure gradient reduce. The configuration of curved front pillar coupled with sharp-edged rear pillar produced a trend for unsteady aerodynamic force to restrain the pitching motion, while the presence of front pillar vortices, which is associated with sharp-edge front pillar configuration, resulted in a tendency for enhancing the pitching motion. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 29 Oct. 2010, Fluids engineering conference ..., 2010, 269 - 270, English

- Numerical simulation of negative Magnus force on a rotating sphereFlow characteristics and fluid force on a sphere rotating along with axis perpendicular to mean air flow were investigated using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) at two different Reynolds numbers Re_p of 10^4 and 2.0×10^5. As a result of simulation, opposite flow characteristics around the sphere and displacement of the separation point were visualized depending on the Reynolds number even though rotation speed according to the Reynolds number is the same. When the sphere rotates at some specific rotation velocity and at Re_p=10^4, flow characteristics agree with the flow field explained in the Magnus effect. While sphere rotates at the same rotation velocity while increasing Re_p to 2.0×10^5, separation point moves in opposite direction and wake appears in the different direction. The reason of the negative Magnus force was discussed in terms of the boundary layer transition on the surface.日本流体力学会, 2010, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2010, 16 - 16, Japanese
- LES analysis for the unsteady aerodynamic force in ski jump take-off motionU Unsteady simulations of flow at ski jump take-off motions were conducted using Large Eddy Simulation, which is effective to investigate the unsteady aerodynamic forces on a jumper. The shape of the jumper was obtained based on the real human body by using a three dimensional scanner. The change of the body trunk angle during the take-off motion was assumed to be important to achieve a good record, thus it was measured and realized in the simulation by analyzing the real take-off motion pictures. Two take-off motions of the same jumper were analyzed in this study. It was found that the difference in the unsteady aerodynamic forces arises from the difference in the take-off motions.日本流体力学会, 2010, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2010, 298 - 298, Japanese

- WS2-4 Revolutionary Simulation for Unsteady Flow around Vehicles(2)The world's largest class unsteady turbulence simulations of flow around vehicles were conducted using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) on the Earth Simulator in Japan. The main objective of our study is to investigate the validity of LES, as an alternative to a conventional wind tunnel measurement or the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes method, for the assessment of vehicle aerodynamics, especially in the context of its possibility for capturing transient aerodynamic forces. As a result, we have demonstrated that LES using high performance computing technique will be a dominant method for improving the total vehicle aerodynamic performance. The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 17 Nov. 2007, Fluids engineering conference ..., 2007, "WS2 - 4-1"-"WS2-4-4", Japanese

- E322 On the Large Scale Structures of Wall TurbulenceThe large-scale structures observed at or above the logarithmic layer of plane channels are studied using Large Eddy Simulation. We mainly focus on their Reynolds-number scaling in the outer layer and interaction with buffer-layer turbulence. The large structures in the neutral thermal stratification basically obey the outer scaling and their spanwise size is about twice larger than the boundary-layer thickness independent of the Reynolds-number range tested here. On the other hand, they are strongly affected under the thermal stratification and suppressed at a certain weakly stable stratification, contrary to the buffer-layer streaks which is appeared to be rather insensitive to the thermal stratification. Due to their suppression in the outer layer, spectral peak wavelength of the streamwise velocity recovers the linear growth above the buffer layer, which reflects that large-scales are the main reason to prevent the self similarity of the streamwise velocity in wall turbulence.日本流体力学会, 2004, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2004, 628 - 629, Japanese
- D214 The Interference of Two Circular Cylinders in a uniform flowThe flows around two circular cylinders that arranged in tandem or staggered were investigated experimentally at a Reynolds number of 13,000. Time-averaged pressure on the surface was measured, and the time-averaged drag and lift coefficient are calculated. Concerning the cylinder distance in tandem, the well-know critical point, where flow pattern changes drastically, is also found to exist in staggered arrangement. The flow pattern at the critical point is also investigated and validated by CFD.日本流体力学会, 2004, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2004, 342 - 343, Japanese
- D215 The effect on cylinder weight for an elastically supported circular cylinderThe objective of this study is to investigate the effect of Reynolds number on flow induced vibration by changing the mass ratio over a certain range to compare the flow pattern at the same Reynolds number with different "reduced velocity" which is commonly used as a parameter in flow induced oscillation. Large discrepancy is found at a half of critical reduced velocity over a certain Reynolds number range and an increase in mass ratio suppress the oscillation. Flow fields at the "reduced velocity" region are visualized using CFD results and relationship between the flow pattern and the Reynolds number dependence is also investigated.日本流体力学会, 2004, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2004, 344 - 345, Japanese
- D145 A Study on Oscillating Motions of Elastically Supported Three Circular Cylinders in Parallel ArrangementIn this research, oscillating motions of elastically supported three circular cylinders in parallel arrangement are studied. From water channel measurements characteristic oscillation pattern is found which consists of two typical motions; One is three cylinders are in-phase; The other is two adjacent cylinders are in-phase while the rest is out of phase. The flow patterns at these two oscillation modes are investigated using CFD visualigation and relationships between eddy structures and oscillations are revealed.日本流体力学会, 2004, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2004, 136 - 137, Japanese

- Experimental Study of Stable/Unstable Stratified Turbulent Boundary Layer Developing on the Roughness BlocksTurbulent structures of stable/unstable stratified boundary layers developing on roughness blocks are investigated experimentally. Thermal stratified wind tunnel with facilities to control the floor and inflow temperatures are used. Stratified boundary layers developing on smooth wall are also investigated to make clear the roughness effects. For the weak stable stratified boundary layer, the effect of the stratification is enhanced by the roughness blocks. For the weak unstable stratified boundary layer, the plume shows similar structures like the strong unstable boundary layer and brings large entrainment due the existence of roughness blocks. Large entrainment is proved from the power spectrum of velocity fluctuation. The developing process of the unstable stratified boundary layer is also investigated with consideration of the variation of wall conditions. The developing process is enhanced by the roughness blocks.日本流体力学会, 2003, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2003, 144 - 145, Japanese
- LES of the turbulence structure of spatially-developing thermally stratified turbulent boundary layersIn this research, in order to generate the inflow turbulence, the turbulence parameters for velocities at recycle station are rescaled and introduced to the inlet boundary, while temperature is treated as a passive scalar. The generated inflow data for temperature as well as velocities are introduced into the main computational domain, where temperature is solved taking into consideration buoyancy effects. With this method, a long fetch is not necessary to simulate the spatially-developing boundary layer. We carry out LES analysis of the spatially-developing thermally stratified turbulent boundary layers. We at first apply Lund's method to generate the inflow turbulence for stratified turbulent boundary layer. By using the generated inflow data, we can simulate the spatially-developing thermally stratified turbulent boundary layers, and investigate the turbulence structure inside them.日本流体力学会, 2003, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2003, 142 - 143, Japanese

- Numerical Simulation of the Flow Field around an Inclined Square Cylinder Using the Immersed Boundary MethodNumerical Simulation of the airflow in an urban area requires the ability to deal with various shapes of buildings. Considering the difficluty to generate the grids for plural arbitrary geometries, it is reasonable to use the Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) in conjunction with Cartesian grids. However there is no previous research on the applicability of IBM to the the flow field that is sensitive to the separation-reattachment effect, wihch is peculiar to the flow around buildings. Therefore, in this study, we apply IBM to the DNS of the flow field around an inclined square cylinder (a basic building shape) and investigate the accuracy of the simulation for the separation-reattachment effect by comparing the areodynamic properties of a square cylinder with the previous numerical and experimental results.日本流体力学会, 2002, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2002, 346 - 347, Japanese
- Vortex structures around a rectangular cylinder with angle of attack and the resulting aerodynamic sound characteristicsNumerical simulations of the flows around rectangular cylinder with the side ratio of 2.67 are carried out to examine the aerodynamic sound and its sources that depend on angle of attack on the body surface. The aerodynamic sound is evaluated by using the Curle's solution. It is found that the pattern of the flow switches from the complete separation to the reattachment and the intensity of the aerodynamic sound sources is strong near the reattachment points of the separated shear flows.日本流体力学会, 2002, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2002, 160 - 161, Japanese
- LES study on the large-scale structures in a turbulent channel flowThe large-scale flow motions observed at or above the logarithmic layer of fully developed turbulent channel flow were investigated for a Reynolds number of 590 and 1180 defined by the friction velocity and the channel-half width. Large Eddy Simulation was adopted in this study as a numerical tool, considering the fact that sufficiently large analysis region and high Reynolds-number condition were required for the reproduction of the large-scale motions. The structure of the large-scale motions is similar to the fine-scale organized structures in the sense that streamwise velocity fluctuation shows streaky patterns, but their streamwise and spanwise sizes reach about three times and twice as large as the channel-half width respectively. Contrary to the fine-scale organized structures in the vicinity of the wall, these large-scale motions were found to obey the outer-layer scaling, independent of the Reynolds number tested here.日本流体力学会, 2002, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2002, 236 - 237, Japanese
- Development of thermally stratified wind tunnel technique for the local temperature control on the floorIn order to study air current in the urban area, it is necessary to consider the local temperature change on the ground surface. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop the equipment whose floor temperature can be controlled locally. For the purpose, the thermoelement modules are arranged under the aluminum floor, obtained results are. A) the floor can be cooled to a temperature 17 ∿ 18℃ lower than the case when the temperature is not controlled. B) the velocity gradient decreases when the floor is cooled.日本流体力学会, 2002, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2002, 70 - 71, Japanese
- Effects of the Surface Roughness on Gas Dispersion in Atmospheric Boundary LayerThis paper describes effects of various types of the surface roughness on gas dispersion. In order to generate inflow turbulence based on various types of surface roughness the driver unit was set upstream of concentration field, and we investigate the process of gas dispersion over each types of surface roughness in this numerical study. The obtained results show that the process of gas dispersion in the case of turbulent boudary layer generated in the driver unit is very different from that of gas dispersion in the case of half-channel, but the difference of the process of gas dispersion between smooth and rough wall was not obtained because the vertical profile of turbulence intensity is almost same in the both case.日本流体力学会, 2002, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2002, 246 - 247, Japanese

- Development of the SGS scalar flux model for the dynamic procedure using finite difference method and its assessmentSGS scalar flux models for the dynamic procedure were developed following the method proposed for the SGS stress modeling in the previous report. Two types of the isotropic and anisotropic models were proposed in this study. Both models were assessed by conducting the actual LES of a plane channel flow with a passive scalar transport and found to agree well with DNS results. Major drawbacks of the isotropic model were the disagreement of the discretized filtering parameter between the SGS stress and flux models and the overestimation of the scalar variance and stremwise turbulent scalar flux while such problems were mitigated by using the proposed anisotropic model日本流体力学会, 2001, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2001, 433 - 434, Japanese

- Applicability of SGS models to the thermally-stratified turbulenceThe effect of buoyancy in thermally stratified turbulence is important on doing numerical simulation of unstably stratified atmospheric boundary layer. Previous DNS research noticed that it made the particular eddy structure. However the validity of large-eddy simulation in nuetral case has been well understood, detailed descriptions and understanding of large-eddy simulation to thermally stratified turbulence has not yet been fully discussed. The purpose of this study is to discuss about applicability of SGS models to unstably stratified turbulence, comparing the results with DNS' data.日本流体力学会, 2000, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2000, 591 - 592, Japanese
- Application of Stabilized Finite Element Method to Aeroelastic Problems of Continuum StructureWhen continuum structures are deformed largely by unsteady fluid force, there is a possibility for the onset of unstable oscillation with various kinds of modes. In this case, modal component of the fluid force is changed by its amount of deformation, so their behavior becomes complex and the oscillation of higher mode cannot be necessarily neglected. Ovalling oscillation is the one kind of the same problem. We analyze ovalling oscillation of thin circular cylindrical shells by using stabilized finite element method, and appear the aeroelastic characterictics. So far, vortex shedding and self-exited force have been expected as the cause of the ovalling ocsillation. We consider the relation between the fluid force and the structure, and investigate the mechanism of the oscillation.日本流体力学会, 2000, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2000, 25 - 26, Japanese
- Large Eddy Simulation of a Methane-Air Jet Diffusion FlameLarge eddy simulation (LES) of a turbulent methane-air jet diffusion flame has been performed, using Flamelet PDF model based on conserved scalar approach. The calculated results are compared with experimental results measured by Masri et al. (1988). Time averaged profiles of velocity and mixture fraction are predicted correctly. However, disagreements of intensity profiles and time-averaged temperature indicate that the applied methods should be improved about subgrid stress model and up-winding scheme for convective term of conserved scalar equation.日本流体力学会, 2000, 日本流体力学会年会講演論文集, 2000, 109 - 110, Japanese
- Large eddy simulation of turbulent methane-air non-premixed flameLarge eddy simulation (LES) of a turbulent methane-air non-premixed jet flame has been performed by using flamelet PDF model based on conserved scalar approach. The flamelet data obtained from numerical simulation with detailed chemistry are used and beta PDF is extended to LES from RANS in order to consider the interaction of turbulence and flame. In order to perform a stable simulation, the 3rd order accurate Runge-Kutta method is arranged for time integration of low-Mach number approximated flow equations. The present method has stability in case of reactive flow. The calculated results are compared with experimental results. The time-averaged profiles of velocity and mixture fraction are predicted correctly. However, disagreements of intensity profiles and time-averaged temperature indicate that the applied methods should be improved about inlet condition of turbulence, subgrid stress model and up-winding scheme for convective term of conserved scalar equation.日本機械学会, 2000, Proceeding of the 4th JSME-KSME thermal engineering conference, 3, 151 - 156, English

- Fluids engineering conference ..., Oct. 2010, English, Pitching stability characteristics of land vehicle were assessed by conducting large eddy simulation of flow past the simplified vehicle models. Forced-sinusoidal-pitching oscillation was imposed on the vehicle models for the probing of their dynamic responses. Predominant flow structures around the real land vehicles, and the trend associated with pitching stability characteristics were successfully captured by the simplified vehicle models. The configuration of curved front pillar coupled with sharp-edged rear pillar produced a trend for unsteady aerodynamic force to restrain the pitching...1005 Numerical Analysis of Vehicle Stability during Pitching Vibration

As a result of simulation, opposite flow characteristics around the sphere and displacement of the separation point were visualized depending on the Reynolds number even though rotation speed according to the Reynolds number is the same. When the sphere rotates at some specific rotation velocity and at Re_p=10^4, flow characteristics agree with the flow field explained in the ...Numerical simulation of negative Magnus force on a rotating sphere
- Proceedings, ... meeting of Japan Society of Fluid Mechanics, Sep. 2010, Japanese, U Unsteady simulations of flow at ski jump take-off motions were conducted using Large Eddy Simulation, which is effective to investigate the unsteady aerodynamic forces on a jumper. It was found that the dif...LES analysis for the unsteady aerodynamic force in ski jump take-off motion

- 年次大会講演論文集 : JSME annual meeting, Sep. 2009, Japanese, Take-off motion of ski jumping was numerically studied. The 1/10 scale model was adopted as analysis model and its trunk angle was dynamically changed during the motion. - Monthly journal of the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo, Jan. 2007, Japanese, The objective of this study is to find out a way to reduce aerodynamic drag of the vehicle body focusing on the underbody flow. Numerical results has shown that the rotation of the wind turbine is more difficult to be generated as Reynolds number decreases, because of a low lift/drag ratio at the low Reynolds number and an interference between blade and vortices. Finally, methods for risk evaluation considering the deviation of estimation value are conducted based on the obtained results and information on strength of building, and statistic values for wind resistance design are shown by ensemble averaging estimation.

A 3D CG model of a ski jumper including skis were produced. The time history of joint angles of the body from the approach to the early fight in actual ski jumping was measured, and the CG amination was produced. The fluid characteristics around the jumper were obtained by numerical fluid analysis. The relationship between flight distance and fluid characteristics was investigated for 15 subjects. Based on the flight distance results, they were divided into 3 groups (5 each) and compared. The differences in streamlines around the body and lift-drag ratios were observed among the groups. It was observed that the better the flight distance, the less the airflow separation around the head and the back, and the higher the lift-drag ratio in the approach posture.

To validate the CFD method, the human dummy models for the wind tunnel test were made. The aerodynamic characteristics were measured in the wind tunnel test. The numerical simulations of two different movements were performed and quantified aerodynamic characteristics during the motion. There were big differences in the aerodynamic forces between the motions, and there was a difference of up to 2.2 times in the drag. In addition, it was in the latter half of the movement, and the lift of the technically high-level player was suddenly increased. The down stream was formed in a wake of the player; this down stream was created by the two symmetric vortexes coming from the upper extremities. This results suggested that influence on lift of the arms was relatively big, and the motion of the arms could not ignore aerodynamically.
