- France became a substantial modern nation-state during the Third Republic by making public elementary education, "secular, compulsory, and free of charge". In addition to this, the reforms in higher education were essential for the reconstruction of the country which had been defeated in Franco-Prussian war. Placed in this social background, this article focuses on Dukheim's descussion of the University in relation to the higher education reforms of that time. In fact, he represented the "New Sorbonne" in 1900 s with other professors.By examining his discussion, we can understand the ideas behind the reforms and the image of the Universtity at the time. The University differed from the "Grandes Écoles" which provided professional education. The University was considered the place for the "sciences", which had the role of enhancing social solidarity. In this context, Durkheim's sociology was institutionalized, introduced into the University system as one of these sciences. In this discussion, the nature of his sociology is made clearer. The Japan Sociological Society, Jun. 1995, Japanese sociological review, 46(1) (1), 46 - 61, Japanese
- During the Third Republic, France finally became a veritable "nation-state". This was illustrated by a series of national education reformes founded on three principles : 'freedom from religion, free of charge, compulsory'.The Japan Sociological Society, Mar. 1993, Japanese sociological review, 43(4) (4), 436 - 450,497, Japanese
In the presence of these circumstances, Émile Durkheim, whose studies in sociology ultimately concerned the stability of French society, took an interest in State theory, particulary from the moral perspective.
With the outbreak of the First World War, Durkheim returned to his reflections on State theory. In 1915, he wrote a pamphlet entitled "L' Allemagne au = dessus de tout (Germany above all)". In this text, he criticized Treitschke's idea of the State. According to Durkheim, his idea was embodied in the maxim, 'The State is Power', quite the opposite of Durkheim's interpretation of State. This criticism can be placed in the context of the development of Durkheim's State theory.
From his discussion of the First World War, we can see the tight linkage between Durkheim' s theoretical interests and the practical problems of the times.

New insight has been gained on a wide range issues relating to long term demographic change, including the particularly striking increase in population and birth rate in the Tohoku region, even before the Meiji Restoration from the middle of the 19th century; the increase through these demographic conditions before the modern period of families forming ie and its subsequent standardisation; from the modern period onward the decrease in the death and divorce rate as part of an increase in the realisation of ie as a desirable outcome and the increasingly fixed nature of ie membership; and, with the stability brought about by modern ie as part of this change, the shift toward the existence of the restricted individual.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Nara Women's University, Apr. 2015 - Mar. 2019How can Sociology be Regenerated as a Discipline--Quest through Durkheimian CaseToday, sociology is facing a crisis. Crisis in which its uniqueness as a discipline becoming vague, power to appeal itself to the outer world getting weak and the number of sociology students turns out be less and less. To cope with this crisis on a fundamental level, it is necessary to deepen a "self-reflexive sociology" which elucidates the construction process and deployment of sociology. For this purpose, the sociology we focused on was that of Emile DURKHEIM with the following perspectives: 1) how he succeeded in establishing the discipline in France, 2) how his sociology was interpreted and transmitted by the subsequent generations, 3) how his sociology was accepted outside France, and 4) what kind of sociology education has been and should be done. During four years of study, we succeeded to produce 25 article and three books. On top of that, we are now getting ready to publish two books, one is an academic research work and the other a textbook on E. Durkheim.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kobe University, Apr. 2014 - Mar. 2017, Principal investigatorWe have conducted our comparative research on higher education reform in Japan and France focusing on the five themes we have set: (1) conflict of trade-off between "popularization" and "excellence", (2) "liberalization" policy of higher education and the question of governance, (3) aspects of university evaluation, (4) relation between liberal arts education and career education, (5) the process of historical development of higher education reform as a general background of those. We were able to obtain research results, in particular, on the common points and differences of higher education in these two countries which are considered centralized state; on the common points and differences of the way of higher education reform in Japan and France at the end of the 19th century, after the World War II, at the end of the 1960s and especially in recent years.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kobe University, Apr. 2013 - Mar. 2017Based on questionnaire surveys and interviews on 'North-South' transnational marriage at local societies in Japan, Korea and Taiwan, transformation in 'reproductive sphere', commonality and diversity among three societies, different characteristics between Chinese and Southeast Asian wives have been clarified. And, based on interviews with parents and close relatives of female marriage emigrants at local societies in Northeast China, Philippines, and Thailand, the following has been disclosed: unique development of transnational marriage in each local society, strong tie between a marriage emigrant and her family of orientation, and importance of her influence on a local society she was grown up especially in cases of Southeast Asian women. Furthermore, 'North' and 'South' in East Asia are not connected in a simple way by transnational marriage, because female marriage emigrants from Thailand and some countries in Southeast Asia often migrate globally beyond East Asia.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Oct. 2012 - Mar. 2016In the rapid changing environments, universities are facing the challenges to reform both of governance and management. This study focused on the aspect of management and tried to analyze the interaction between "academic managers" such as president, vice president and deans and "administrative managers" such as the secretary general, registrar, and the financial director through the international comparison. As a result, we found as follows. First at the foreign universities, managerial positions are more differentiated functionally than Japanese universities. Second, however, the functional areas in which both managers may affect their authority and power are compatible between Japanese universities and foreign universities. Finally, the most striking difference is the way to acquire their capabilities to perform. While managers at foreign universities acquired through education and training, Japanese counterparts mostly did through experiences.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Japan Women's University, 2011 - 2013A Comparative Sociological Study of Examinations as Institutions of "Ability"The main purpose of this research is to investigate a sociological meaning of the new institutions of "ability" after the 1980s, under the understanding that examinations are institutions of "ability", by the method of "thick comparison" with historical perspective and socio-cultural network analysis using local daily newspapers and interviews with important persons of England, France, Thailand, and Japan. In conclusion, the remarkable characteristic of these new concepts of "ability" is that they are distant from the institutions of examination and that they have indirect connection to them through the concept of "education" and through the social actors including the government and schools, rather than universities.
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kobe University, 2011 - 2013, Principal investigatorWe have been doing comparative research between Japan and France on three main themes which we have posed as our point of study: 1)resolution of dichotomy between "tendency to mass" and "pursuit of excellence" of higher education, 2)impacts of the "liberalization" policy of higher education, 3)significance of liberal arts and general education. We have found that the essential and principal questions on the higher education reform -- what kind of higher education, or more generally, what kind of society is aimed for by the reform -- have not been discussed and reflected enough in both countries. We have inquired into actual research themes by setting this fundamental problem as the common basis for our study.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Kobe University, 2007 - 2010This research has investigated logics of formation, characteristics of contemporary change, and possibility and tasks of sustainable development of local societies in East Asia from the viewpoint of 'local world'. Villages and local cities (towns) in East Asia have never been opposed to each other, but organic relationships between them, standing upon historical and cultural traditions, in each local society, have been formed. And 'Local world' has been created on this basis. Therefore, not only prosperity and regeneration of villages, but also those of local cities (towns) and relationships between them, are indispensable for affluent development of local societies and East Asia itself.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kobe University, 2007 - 2010, Principal investigatorThe aim of this research project is to shed light on the significance of "associations" in society on the interdisciplinary common base of the humanities-sociology, literature and history. Our main research fields are France, UK, India, USA and Japan. By applying a wider concept of "associations", we have brought to light the diversity of "associations" and the validity of the frame of "associations" for the research on human activities in society. Taking into consideration the context of the historical development as well as the comparative point of view of localities, we have clarified the importance of "associations" in society.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Japan Women's University, 2007 - 2009Comparative Historical Sociology of Discourses of "The Times" on ExaminationsThis research is an experimental study on comparative sociology based on historical method using newspapers as the main source of data. It revealed that ; (1) The Japanese students' negative attitude to the entrance examination competition has changed positive around 1980's. (2) The way of publishing examination result has been different between England and Wales since 1990's. (3) In the change of examination system during this ninety years, quantitative points of view has gradually been strengthened. (4) This change has relations to a gradual incorporation of the examination system into the whole education system in England, while it is related to a gradual separation in Japan. It suggested that the viewpoint of "articles" is more effective than that of "discourses" in this type of research. It also suggested "comparison with the Japan-case" and "socio-cultural network analysis" as methods of analysis.

- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kobe University, 2005 - 2007, Principal investigatorAn overall analysis was being deepened aiming at doing a comparative study on the contemporary higher education of France, Japan and United States, with a point of view based on historical development in each countries. we have also carried out necessary field researches in Japan and in abroad. Recent days' higher education and research system in each country are universally pursuing to correspond contradictory directions as open-door-to-all policy (rise of the number of students and expansion of student layer)and pursuit of excellence (becoming an internationally excellent research institute which can accomplish internationally recognized research achievement). We can find a common direction in France and in Japan, such as concentration of power in the hands of university president, participation of outside persons in university operation, and rise of the importance of evaluation in higher education. With confirming such universal flow, we also have to reflect the essential meaning of the higher education and the research. We could grasp the importance of the point of view which makes the trend of the recent years clear as well as is asking those essential ideas concerning the higher education and the research system through this research. Our research achievement was published and presented by books, articles and academic meeting presentations, etc. during study duration concerned, and we can mention the publications of "Naissance of "intellectuals" 1880-1900" (Christoph Charle work, Yoshihiko Shiratori translation, Fujiwara Shoten, 2006) and of Sociological Review of Kobe University, No.25 (2008), edited by Shiratori, which features "Questions on Higher Education Reform" through international comparative research on the higher education and the research system in France, United Kingdom and Japan, etc. as important outcome in particular of our research.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Kobe University, 2003 - 20061, Outline of the subjects We have carried researches on the dynamic changes of ethnic identities and reconstruction of communities, which were brought about by the movement and migration of two areas in Asia. The main regions of the study were: Eastern Asian region, specifically China and the Korean Peninsula, and the region that includes Thailand and its neighboring areas. We also conducted a study on the Asian immigrants to France and Canada, in order to compare with the two regions of interest. 2, Outline of the research findings (1)The importation of foreign workers to Eastern countries has been steadily expanding, which causes a delay in the institutional correspondence. Therefore, the conditions by which foreign workers are employed have large restrictions with respect to the social system or structure of the migrated country. Moreover, upon entering the country, they have no other choices but to depend upon the arrangements of brokers in many cases. (2)The foreign workers have not only expanded their network into the society where they migrated, but also continued to maintain a close relationship with their hometown. When the access to their native country turned into their cultural capital in the migrated country, they may display the "authenticity" of their native culture at the migrated place, as the case of the ethnic businesses of South Korean immigrants in China shows. (3)Immigrants form their community isolated from society of the migrated place in many cases. When they are placed in the inferior environment, they tend to have a strong desire to turn over their marginalized position in the society by whipping up their ethnic feeling. The case of the Korean Chinese immigrants in South Korea trying to draw a line from the main society by expressing themselves as "Chinese" who have "Korean" roots is a typical example. (4)Some research findings also revealed the different tendencies of emigrants: the emigrants from Moon tribe in Myanmar have a strong tendency to settle down in Thai society, and the Vietnamese emigrants in Northeastern Thailand have weakened their ethnic identity as a group. This research also clearly showed that even if immigrants to Thailand are under the severe conditions, they are not necessarily crushed by the misfortune. The cities where many immigrants live are developing a polygamy-like and post-authoritarian structure, and they are expanding the space in them, where immigrants can gain new life chances.Competitive research funding
- Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kyoto University, 2003 - 2004What were the Sixties? In this research project the head investigator and investors explored the uniqueness of the 1960's mostly in terms of people's experience of everyday life, which apparently seems then newly re-constructed deeply in relation to the changes that occurred in the systems of mass production and consumption, as well as to the outcomes of the development of technology. These close examination of factors that influence people's life style during that period led investigators to reach their research interest to the contemporary analysis on those fundamental alteration in people's life done in the 60s by various scholars with different approaches, that gave this research project another key characteristic ; the deep concern about the evolution in social sciences themselves. In addition, this concern about the evolution in the fields of sciences went on to find, as the dynamism operating under visible changes or events around the decade, the subtle relations and resonance between the intellectual history and popular experience. The head investigator and investigators have written papers respectively on their studies ; "What was the 《McLuhan》?-the 1960s and the turns in the intellect." - Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation, 2000 - 2002A Comparative Study on Relations between Universities and Non-university Institutions in Japan, the USA and European CountriesNon-university institutions offer more practice-oriented shorter courses and foster more specific skills than traditional universities. The graduates of these higher education institutions, however, increasingly need to continue studying and to be qualified further because knowledge and skills required in the labor market rapidly change. The demands for higher qualifications/degrees will increase in the knowledge-based society in the 21st century. Therefore it is important to arrange some devices in the education system which facilitate transfers between non-university institutions and universities. Such devices are e.g. courses of study based on credits and modules, ways of measuring and assuring the quality of courses, and last not but least system for credit transfer and accumulation as well as mutual recognition of degrees. They are well prepared in the United States where reverse transfers are also not rare cases, while students who want to transfer across states sometimes face difficulties. In Europe, the Bologna Declaration in 1999 by ministers of education had a great impact on the European countries. Many countries are now carrying out reforms in higher education to introduce credits and two-tier system with bachelor's and master's degrees. According to our survey of all four-year universities in Japan, demands for transfers are increasing, and private universities are especially positive to accept transfer students. Their behavior reflects market mechanism. In this sense, quality assurance in higher education is the issue worldwide.
