  • A Prototype System for Practicing English Speaking

    In this study, we developed a prototype system that helps students practice speaking English. When students speak English, they may have difficulty expressing their intentions in real time, even when they know the correct words and phrases. To think of the correct English terms smoothly, it is important that students use the language knowledge they have acquired. By using probable linguistic situations, our system attempts to check and provide information about the words and phrases learners can use. We conducted an experiment with 105 first-year Japanese university students to investigate the following research questions: (1) Does the prototype system run properly, provide questions, and save the log data as expected?; (2) When we check the learners’ answers in real time, how many evaluation items and evaluation levels are appropriate?; and (3) How should we display the results of the evaluation to ensure visual comprehension? Concerning the first question, the results of the experiment show that the system runs properly and saves the log data. For the second question, the results suggest that a few evaluation items and a few evaluation levels are preferable for checking the learners’ answers in real time. Results for the third question suggest that a color-coded table could help visually interpret the learners’ results. In this table, English sentences grouping probable linguistic situations are classified according to the percentage of the correct answers, such as less than 50%, 50?80%, and more than 80%.

    本稿では,これまでのリスニング学習における学習履歴データを用いて,学習者の英単語学習における音素レベルの誤りパターンを自動検出するシステムを開発した.そして,学生グループの共通のリスニングウィークポイントを発見し,フィードバックする機能を実装した.検出は学習履歴データにある正解単語と誤った単語を取り出し,音素レベルに分解することによって行い,誤りパターンの出現回数も計算した.これまで蓄積した学習履歴データに対して検出を行い,検出手法の有効性を確認した.単語の中に聞き取りにくい音素が一つのみの場合に対して,開発したフィードバック機能の利用によって,学習者のリスニングウィークポイントを把握しやすくなるが,それ以外のケースに対して新たな検出手法が必要であることも明らかになった.

    本研究は,外国語教育における合成音声利用の可能性を探ることを目的としている.[f][θ][ð][v]の摩擦音が含まれる英単語について,合成音声とネイティブ音声を用いたWebペースの音声評価用CALL教材を作成し,文理系の学生にそれぞれの音声を評価させた.その結果,合成音声において,[v]音声を含む単語群については,そのほとんどがネイディブ音声との間に有意差がなく,音節の長い単語が単音節語より比較的聞き取りやすいが,[f][θ][ð]単語群については同様な傾向が見られなかった.

    本研究では,教育現場における利用や教材作成を考慮したシステム作りを目指して,RFIDタグを用いた英会話練習システムを試作し,小学校英語授業で実験的に利用することにより,システムに対する評価を行った.このシステムを利用することにより,教師(または学習者)は,複雑な操作や専門知識なしに,非接触ICタグカードを用いて英文音声を出力することができる.また,音声データは,教師が独自に録音した音声を個人のPCで手軽に編集加工して利用することが可能となっている.

    本研究は,外国語教育における合成音声利用の可能性を探ることを目的としている.特徴のある母音を含む名詞と動詞の英単語について,合成音声とネイティブ音声を用いたWebベースの音声評価用CALL教材を作成し,文理系の学生にそれぞれの音声を評価させた.クラスター分析の結果から,合成音声は,単語レベルにおいて,「とても聞きやすい」と評価されるネイティブ音声と同じレベルのもの,「普通」と評価される違和感のないもの,そして,ネイティブ音声と明らかな差があるものと三種類に分類できることが判明した.また,ネイティブ音声と同様に利用できる合成音声の特徴について探ってみた.

    本研究では,音声合成エンジンを用いた教材作成及び学習支援システムを開発した.外国語学習教材の基本とした音声付き教材を,コンピュータに関する専門知識がなくても,ブラウザを通して簡単な操作のみでサーバ上に作成できる.学習者は,インターネットに接続した自分のコンピュータのブラウザでサーバにアクセスして教師の作成した教材を閲覧する.また,音声データの作成に音声合成エンジンを利用したため,教師側が用意した教材だけでなく,学習者側にある任意のテキスト文章を音声に変換してヒアリング自習することもできる.

    本研究は,学習者の理解状況に応じて適切な説明コンテンツを提示するIT用語辞書に学習すべき関連用語を推薦する手法を提案する.推薦するにあたって,学習者の理解状況と学習履歴を考慮し,用語間の関連度を用いて推薦を行う.関連度を計算するには,用語のカテゴリ属性情報,文章中における共起情報を用いる.提案手法を実装したシステムで主観評価を行ない,有効に機能することを確認する.

    本研究の目的は、作文の産出過程に焦点をあて、自然言語処理技術を活用し、従来の作文産出後の添削方式と異なった個々の学習者の言語形式への気づきを高める新しいタイプの学習者適応型作文支援システムを開発し、実践的に評価を行うことである。システムには、学習者の言語形式への気づき(Focus on Form) を高める機能の実装により、正しい文法に繰り返し学習させ、文法上の誤りの軽減を図り、教師による添削労力の軽減および学習者の主体的に作文する能力の向上につながることを目標としている。言語形式への気づきは語彙の使い方への気づきと文法項目への気づきに分ける。学習者のライティング能力をレベル分けし、書く前の準備作業段階においても、書く過程においても、さらに教師による添削前の自己修正段階においても、語彙と文法の二つの側面からネイティブ表現に気づかせ、その習得および作文への活用を促す機能を開発する。 令和3年度では、語彙に焦点を当て研究を進めた。プロトタイプのライティング支援システムを開発した。システムには、予め用意したリーディングリソースから三単現動詞を自動的に視覚的に強調する機能を実装し、リーディングの際に注意を払わせる有効な手法を調べた。また、単語スペルへの気づきにおいては、未習得の単語の検索方法に着目して、スペル音声による検索とテキスト検索の相違によるスペルへの記憶効果を調査し、単語スペルへの気づきの手法を検討した。結果としては、学習者の単語スペルへの記憶効果はスペル音声による検索方法を用いた場合がテキスト検索方法を用いた場合より有意に上回っていることが判明した。

    本研究では、プログラムに対する俯瞰的な理解力を涵養するための学習方法を開発することを目的にする。さらに、開発した学習方法を用いた実証実験を行い、同方法の可能性・妥当性を調査する。 本研究で行う学習方法の基本は、比較的似通ったプログラムによって作成された2つのビジュアルコンテンツ(静止画、動画、マウス操作によって変化する画像など:以下コンテンツと呼ぶ)を閲覧し、その違いを学習しようというものである。 2019年度は、まず、同学習を行うための学習支援システムの構築を行った。同支援システムでは、(1)個々のコンテンツ、およびソースプログラムのデータベースへの格納・登録、(2)比較用教材となる2個のコンテンツをペアの登録・および教材メタデータの登録、(3)登録されたコンテンツ群からペアの候補を見つけるための支援機能である検索機能・類似コンテンツ推薦機能、(4)登録されたコンテンツを元に類似コンテンツを作成するための類似コンテンツ作成機能などを準備した。 2020年度は、作成した支援システムの教員側の操作性について本研究担当者間で使用実験を行ないし、支援システムを利用することで簡易、かつ柔軟に授業で使用するコンテンツを準備できることを確認した。 2021年度は、開発したプロトタイプシステムを用いて実証実験を行なう予定であったが、

    In this study, we propose a method of obtaining sensor data by developing a prototype movement monitoring system with wireless sensor devices for supporting physical response-based activities. From the results of the trial experiment, it was found that it is possible to judge approximate movement and position by preset threshold values. We also explore the possibility of utilizing obtained data for response-based activities in real space. From the results of the experiment, it is suggested that the obtained data help us grasp the participant's detailed process and situation of fulfilling the given tasks

    In this research, we have developed and practically assessed a web-based system for foreign language learning to support the measurement of listening comprehension. A text-to-speech engine is combined so that teachers can easily create their own web-based listening tests. Because there still is a gap between natural speech and synthetic speech in naturalness and sometimes in intelligibility, the system provides evaluation scores of voices according to the evaluation result of synthetic speech by students to help teachers determine if a voice can be used in listening test or not. Moreover, we invented an approach to analyze the measurement data and clarified in the practical assessment of the system that the approach is effective for identifying weak points in listening.

    We investigated effectiveness of synthetic speeches in listening learning in order to find out if synthetic speeches are suitable for foreign language learning, what features of the sounds that can be utilized in listening materials are and how synthetic speeches influence learners' listening perception. Surveys of speech evaluation both for learners and teachers at the word and sentence level are conducted and listening training experiments are performed. In the surveys, natural voices were also used and the words were classified into three groups called "general words", "words with fricative" and "words based on vowel classification" according to their sound features. The results of the surveys reveal that learners show little difference on comprehending parts of the synthetic voices in comparison with the natural voices. The voices are those with the short vowels /Ι/, /υ/ and /*/, the long vowels /i:/, /u:/ and /*:r/, the diphthongs /aΙ/, /*Ι/. For "words with fricative", the evaluations correspond to types of fricatives while synthetic voices at the sentence level are easier to understand and acceptable in comparison with synthetic voices at the word level. The evaluations by teachers exhibit that there is no significant difference between synthetic voices and natural voices although the evaluations on some voices are in agreement with those of learners. The listening training experiment consisted of pretest (natural voices), listening training (synthetic voices) and posttest (natural voices) and performed for English and Chinese respectively. In both experiments, learners showed the improvement in listening comprehension. We suggest that synthetic speeches are suitable to be selectively used in foreign language learning and listening training with synthetic speeches is efficient to enhance listening skills of learners. In addition, in order to find out adequate methods using synthetic voices in classrooms, we investigated the effectiveness of communication tools and RFID.

  • Chiral phases in Frustrated Quantum Spin Chains

    We have found by the DMRG method that a novel chiral phases exist in the XY region of the frustrated XXZ Heisenberg spin chain. The main purpose of this research project is to clarify 1)the existence region in the parameter space of the Hamiltonian, 2)the mechanism of appearance of the chiral phases, 3)properties of the excited states of the chiral phases and 4)magnetization process of the chiral phase. To establish the physical picture of the chiarl phases, we have done the followings; 1.Confirmation by Monte Calro simulation at finite temperatures of the appearance of the modulated phases which correspond to the chiral phases Tin the two dimensional classical frustrated system, the BEG model; 2.Analysis of the impurity spin effect on the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain by variational method using the matrix product wave functions 3.Analysis of the magnetization process of an Ising-type frustrated S=1 spin chain 4.Analysis of the ground state phase diagrams of an anisotropic spin-(1/2) delta-chain with ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions 5.Application of modified spin wave theory to ferromagnetic spin chain with arbitrary range interactions. From these studies, we have established that 1)the chiral phase is essentially same as the physical picture of classical modulated phases ; 2)the canted phase similar to the chiral phase exists in an anisotropic spin-(1/2) delta-chain with ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions. The DMRG and exact diagonalization program packages for these systems will open for public after improvement of algorithm.
