• Measuring changes in face-to-face interaction between teachers and students using a sociometric sensor device after teacher training

  Introduction Teacher training (TT) was developed to improve teachers’ skills in interacting with students with neurodevelopmental disorders. Teachers can also apply these skills to students without neurodevelopmental disorders in their classrooms. Therefore the interaction between teachers and students would change before and after the TT. However, prior studies have not utilized objective tools to assess the changes in interactions caused by TT interventions. In this study, a wearable sociometric sensor device was used to assess the changes in face-to-face interactions during a group classroom activity to provide objective measures of interactions. Methods We evaluated face-to-face interactions using sociometric devices in six classes, a total of six teachers and 158 elementary school students, during a group activity task. An evaluation of teacher-student interactions by video recording was also used to examine the directions of changes in interaction time between the sociometric device and video recording. Results The changes in face-to-face interaction time between teachers and students were in the same direction in five of six teachers. The TT intervention did not significantly affect the interaction time in the current study. Discussion Based on the results, a wearable sociometric sensor device can serve as an objective measure for detecting changes in classroom interactions.

• Correlations between the Broad Autism Phenotype and social cognition among mothers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

  The present study examined the relation between Broad Autism Phenotype (BAP) tendencies and social cognition in mothers who had a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Japan. The participants of this study were 51 mothers who had a child with ASD. The survey consisted of a questionnaire (BAPQ-J) and four social cognition tasks. The results indicated a cultural difference in “pragmatic language.” Next, those who scored higher on the total BAPQ-J or on the “rigid” subscale had greater difficulty in reading emotions in situations without happy facial cues or surprised facial cues. Additionally, these individuals had greater difficulty with complex judgments, such as judging trustworthiness, from movements and multiple facial stimuli. In summary, BAP and social cognition have some correlation in mothers who have children with ASD.

  Considering the effect by comparing before and after the intervention of Parent Training and parent program based on the TEACCH was carried out in the Osaka Prefectural Centers for Children with Development Disorder. This investigation proved that both Parent Training and TEACCH based parent program showed remarkable improvements in the stress of the parent, the degree of parent’s confidence and child's behavior scored by SDQ（Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire). As a result of the long term prognosis investigation of the children and the parents who had received the intervention program, all except for a friend relation were higher than a general junior high school student according to the score of KINDL(R). More than 90 % were normal range for "Delinquent Behavior" and "Aggressive Behavior" in CBCL (Child Behavior Check List). From the analysis of free comments, parents have strong needs that a specialized service for developmental disorder will be continued after a school age.

  In Japan, Problem solving training(PST) is conducted in the children of the elementary school-age children. but, the effectiveness of PST on children with Pervasive Developmental Disorders(PDD) and those parents remains to be determined. In conclusion, These results indicated that the PST is useful as an intervention program for PDD children in that it increases mothers' confidence and improves children' s behavior as reported previously, additionally, it may improve CBCL : Externalized T-scores and Stress Coping Skills in children.
