    Abstract This meta-analysis aims to analyse how the activities of rail passengers have changed in Japan as a result of rapid technological developments. To be eligible for inclusion in this analysis, source studies must have reported the number of passengers performing specific activities, and the number must have been directly counted by surveyors who actually ride on trains. Databases searched included CiNii, J-STAGE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. References in selected studies were trialled using a snowballing method. In addition, past onboard activities were retrospectively identified by content analysis of YouTube videos in which the surveyors hypothetically travelled on a train and observed the passengers. The use of YouTube videos for meta-analysis of rail passengers’ activities is a novel contribution of this study. The search for the YouTube video was entirely manual. In total, 23 independent studies with 332,355 passengers were included in the analysis. Data were collected from 1983 to 2019. The effect sizes were the proportion of each of the following activities: ‘(a) mobile phones’, ‘(b) sleeping’, ‘(c) reading’, ‘(d) music’, and ‘(e) other’. Meta-regressions were performed with the year of data collection as a moderator. Demonstrating historical changes in activities through statistical analysis is another novel contribution: ‘(a) mobile phones’ and ‘(d) music’ had a significantly increasing trend, ‘(c) reading’ had a significantly decreasing trend, and ‘(b) sleeping’ and ‘(e) other’ did not change. Studies with and without YouTube videos did not affect the conclusions, which supports the use of YouTube videos for the purposes of this study. Ideas are presented for research methods that use directly observed data to explain the possible social factors behind longitudinal variation in travel-based multitasking.

    Household car and motorcycle ownership behaviours in the Chukyo Metropolitan Area have been analysed focusing on 1) traffic convenience in residential area, 2) interrelationships between car and motorcycle ownership, and 3) secular changes of the ownership behaviours. Some accessibility measures, based on expected maximum utility of mode choice models, are examined to explain the convenience and bivariate ordered probit models are applied to describe the ownership. Models estimated are inter temporally compared, and their transferability is examined. Complementary relationships between car and motorcycle ownership, the secular changes of factors affecting the ownership, and accessibility measures related to higher transferability are shown.

    This study analyses the relationships among household residence, vehicle ownership and vehicle distance travelled using household travel diary data collected in the Chukyo Metropolitan area since 1960s. A str uctural equation modelling approach shows that better accessibility to transit and higher vehicle ownership have led to lower vehicle ownership and longer vehicle distance Unveiled respectively since 1960s. The relationships have become stable since 1980s but still been changing in the whole population. On the other hand, the linkages have become more stable on a household category basis since 1990s and the usefulness of the study considering household type is suggested.

    Although it is said that disaggregate mode choice models have good transferability, methods of updating the models have been proposed to improve it. However, temporal transferability of updated models to improve spatial transferability has rarely been analysed and factors affecting it have not been uncovered. This paper has dealt with one of the updating methods, updating alternative-specific constants utilising disaggregate data, and aimed to investigate factors affecting the temporal transferability of the constants. In the analysis, repeated cross-sectional data collected in the Chukyo Metropolitan Area are divided to generate many application areas effectively. The analysis has shown that the factors can relate not only to regional characteristics but also to traffic conditions in the past and irreversibility of travel behaviour.

    本研究は，自記式交通調査の代理回答バイアスと丸め誤差の特性を解明し，それらを利用した調査の質の計測指標やバイアスの補正法等を開発することを目的とする．本来の対象者ではない代理者の回答によるトリップの記入漏れ等のバイアスや，出発・到着時刻等を5や10の倍数等に丸めて回答することによる誤差を対象とする．本年度は以下の成果を挙げた． （１）トリップの出発時刻の丸め誤差を分析するウィップル指数を拡張した指数を提案し，JICAが実施している途上国でのパーソントリップ(PT)調査データを分析した．回答データの質，対象都市の文化等で解釈できる結果を得ており，成果は学会で発表済みである． （２）1984年，1997年，2012年の熊本PT調査データを利用して，トリップ出発時刻の丸め誤差の実態を精査した．交通特性，個人属性による違い，経年変化を分析した成果を学会で発表予定である． （３）代理回答者の情報を収集している米国全国PT調査を利用した分析を展開した．代理回答者の属性などの傾向，トリップ回答値への代理回答バイアス，代理回答にはには丸め誤差が多く含まれるなどの実証分析を実施した．特に，代理回答が自分のトリップ出発時刻を丸めて回答する場合，被代理回答者の回答には丸め誤差が多く含まれ，トリップの記入漏れが多いという知見を導くことに成功した．成果は学会で発表するとともに，国際雑誌に投稿中である． （４）正確な移動の出発・到着時刻を記録したデータとして，新聞誌上の首相動静のデータに着目し，その傾向等を精査した． （５）2022年度に予定されている熊本PT調査において，本研究プロジェクトとの連携も視野に入れて，代理回答者の分析が可能になる調査票の設計について関係者と調整を行った．

  • Studies on Sustainable Transport: Focusing on the Regulatory Framework and the Role of Private Sector

    This research project examined sustainable transport policy based on the evaluations of transport policies in Japan. Several interesting findings are obtained by our empirical analyses. Especially, 1) even regulatory reform on entry/exit and fares, changes in the market environment may be the large momentum of the private rail’s response; 2) informal communication is significant for overall coordination and mechanisms enhancing informal communication are observed mainly at the task group and individual levels; 3) Japanese track access charges, calculated by the avoidable cost rule, is too low, causing difficulties in the promotion of a modal shift to rail freight; 4) High speed rail may be a stronger competitor for FSCs than LCCs.

  • 移動中に行う活動の時代変遷と活動可能な環境に対する支払い意思

    社会生活基本調査の調査票Bの4時点（2001年，2006年，2011年，2016年）のデータを用いることで，人が移動中に行った活動がどのように変化してきたかについての基礎集計を行い，統計分析を開始した． 近年の交通に関する技術革新で注目されている自動運転に関する分析も行った．完全自動運転車が実用化された場合，移動中に運転をする必要がなくなるため，移動中の活動に大きな変化が起こると考える．しかし，運転操作を全面的に自動運転システムに委ねることには，それが生命に関わることだけに社会的な合意が得られているとは言い難い．そこで，自動運転，タクシー，自身の運転の3者間の3通りの一対比較を行い，それらの間の安全性・早着性・利用意向の比較を行い，安全性と利用意向に正の相関が認められた．また，自動運転の受容性は今回検討した自動化技術の中では無人コンビニの受容性と相関が高いことを示した． 交通は多くの場合，目的地での仕事や勉強といった本源的需要からの派生需要である．しかし，コロナ禍ではテレワークやオンライン講義が実施されることで目的地での活動自体がなくなり，派生需要が消滅し交通事業者の経営悪化に繋がった．一方，交通事業者は駅等の施設を保有しており，それらを仕事や勉強が可能な場所（シェアオフィス等）として提供することもできる．そこで，近年議論が盛んになっている，MaaS (Mobility as a Service)の定額制サービスとして，移動と活動可能場所の提供をともに含んだ仮想的な拡張MaaSパッケージを提示したSP調査を行い，選択モデルを推定した．また，拡張MaaSアプリの具備すべき要件についても整理した． また，神戸大学生を対象に，コロナ禍で通学目的の移動頻度が減少した時期の居住地に関する調査を実施し，通学頻度と移動時間に関する分析を開始した．

    To understand and forecast travel behaviours in long-time horizon, travel behaviours are analysed utilising repeated cross-sectional data collected in Nagoya at four points in time covering three decades. The analyses provided insights into better understandings of long-term dynamics of travel mode choice behaviours and car owning behaviours. The author proposed a methodology to improve travel demand forecasts by utilising not only the most recent dataset but also an older dataset. In addition, the author investigated reasons of forecast inaccuracies, applied models in developed countries to developing countries, proposed a methodology to handle income data appropriately, and addressed technical issues for analysing travel behaviour changes.

    This research project explores roads toward sustainable transport, with particular emphasis on developing indicators such as social costs and models which will be able to assess related transport policies. Several arguments are substantiated by empirical evidence from our analyses. Especially, interesting is the study regarding the social costs of the roadway transport in Japanese cities. The results indicate that(1) as the scale of the city increases, the social costs of the auto grow with accelerating speed ;(2) new roads do not contribute to a decrease in social costs, but public transport contributes slightly ;(3) automobile use is significantly underpriced, resulting in over-consumption and inefficient use of resources

    This study analysed stated preference experiment design in travel behaviour analysis focusing on response formats such as choice and double-bounded formats. Analyses using existing data showed that double-bounded model outperformed choice one in the efficiency of parameter estimates. The study also provides insights into the characteristics of the 1st- and the 2nd-bound responses of the double-bounded data. In addition, examining artificial data gave insights into the relationships between the attributes' levels of two bounds of double-bounded experiment design and estimation efficiency.
