• A Study in the Sociology of 'Deadlines': Based on the Discussion of Niklas Luhmann's 'The Scarcity of Time and Urgency of Time Limits'

  To examine the significance of 'deadlines' in contemporary society, this paper explores a sociological framework for discussing 'deadlines,' by employing Niklas Luhmann’s theory of time based on his social systems theory and analyzing his work titled 'The Scarcity of Time and Urgency of Time Limits'. Luhmann's sociological theory of time suggests the distinction between 'before/after' a certain event is the most elementary framework common to various schemes for observing time in society. According to Luhmann, the significance of distinctions such as 'before/after' and 'past/future' lies in their differences from and relationships to other dimensions of meaning, such as the material and social ones. Applying this framework to the argument of 'The Scarcity of Time and the Urgency of Time Limits,' we can think of 'deadlines' as a scheme to observe time, namely, a temporal form, that distinguishes 'before/after' fixed-'deadlines.' From the perspective of such a temporal form, the relationship between the temporal, material, and social dimensions of meaning in matters with fixed deadlines appears to be a part of complicated problematics. Setting deadlines and prioritizing matters with deadlines increases the possibility of continuing communication despite differences between their contents and between people participating in them, while they have various consequential problems.

• The "Simultaneity" of Alfred Schutz:

  <p>Alfred Schutz argued in <i>Der sinnhafte Aufbau der sozialen Welt</i> (1932) that the "We-relationship," as the most fundamental layer in the social world, is based on the "simultaneity" of the I and Thou, and that "we grow older together" in such simultaneity. The aim of this paper is to examine the simultaneity Schutz argued by referring to his theory of inner time and descriptions of cases in which simultaneity occurs in concrete social relations, and then to investigate the problems and possibilities for sociological theories of time.</p><p>Previous studies have pointed out problems with Schutz's theory of simultaneity, these mainly related to dualistic elements. In another view, Schutz's conception in a statement such as "the intersubjectivity is a datum" is regarded as a knowledge gain in that Schutz begins to describe social relations by disregarding such problems. However, another problematic element of simultaneity is found in Schutz's theory when seriously considering the problems in Bergsonian and Husserlian concepts, which Schutz has overlooked. This is the problem of "temporality" connected with simultaneity exceeding mere instantaneity and presentness. In fact, Schutz has dealt with simultaneity as "growing older together," but has not thematized the problem of temporality in simultaneity. This paper especially points out the difference between two kinds of simultaneity, which Schutz has confused, and then derives a view to conceive growing older together as sharing an "idealized temporality." Finally, this paper seeks to provide an answer for the abovementioned dualistic elements and show the possibilities for relating Schutz's theory of simultaneity to wider sociological discussions and theories of time.</p>

• Multiple Constructions in Alfred Schutz:Aufbau, Konstitution, Konstruktion

  &emsp;This paper aims to clarify the multiplicity of constructions of the social world and social sciences argued in Alfred Schutz's Der sinnhafte Aufbau der sozialen Welt (1932),where Schutz has argued the "meaning structure of the social world", "constitutivephenomenology of natural attitude", and "constructs of second degree". In thesephrases, reduced to Schutz's German terms, there are three concepts related tothe construction of the social world and social sciences: Aufbau, Konstitution andKonstruktion. To interpret each concept adequately, this paper also refers to theconcepts of Wilhelm Dilthey, Edmund Husserl and Max Weber.<br>&emsp;In summary, this paper shows the following: Aufbau indicates the multi-phasedstructure (composed of meaning and personalities) and structurizing of thesocial world; Konstitution shows the primary relationship between consciousness (and experiences in it) and meaning, between meaning and action; Konstruktionsignifies the abstract and scientific concepts in social sciences (Idealtypus) and theirformation. Moreover, Schutz emphasizes that actors in everyday life themselvesuses such an abstract Konstruktion, and therefore Schutz postulates that thoseconstructs are included in Konstitution of meaning in actors themselves, and, on theother hand, that social scientists can approach to Konstitution of meaning in actorsonly through the former Konstruktion about the latter Konstruktion, constructs of constructs, that is, constructs of second degree. In this way Schutz sees, in the relationship of the multiple constructions, in other words, in the connection between Constitution and Konstruktion, the characteristic of the meaning Aufbau of social sciences and their object: that is, the social world.

  本年度は、ロシア語圏、フランス語圏、ドイツ語圏、英語圏における、ロシア・中東欧で生まれた亡命知識人の代表となる社会学者を選定する作業を行い、ロシア人であるソローキンならびにギュルヴィチによる学問と思想を、〈善く生きる〉ための社会学の１つに位置付ける作業を行った。中間報告として、『利他主義社会学の創造』（昭和堂、2022年刊行）を発表した。本書は研究分担者にも一読してもらい、研究代表者（吉野）のソローキン研究と、＜善く生きる＞ための社会学とを架橋する作業を行った。 海外調査については、コロナ禍のため、海外渡航が極端に制限されてしまったために、実施することができなかった。そこで調査地の事情に明るい研究協力者として、阿毛香絵氏（京都精華大学）および中辻柚珠氏（京都大学）に加わってもらい、それぞれフランスおよびチェコにかんする資料と情報の提供を行ってもらった。 また国内の学会については、ほとんどの学会が対面で行うことが困難であったことから、可能な限り遠隔での会議の参加を試みた。そのための環境整備にかなりの時間と労力を投入することとなった。 定例研究会では、遠隔ならびにハイブリッドでの会議を５月、６月、３月と重ねて、上記の阿毛氏、中辻氏にも参加を要請した。最終的に、「〈善く生きる〉ための社会学の系譜：スラヴ地域からの亡命知識人が残した遺産と展望」（長崎ウエスレヤン大学現代社会学部紀要 19(1) 53-72 2020年12月）として、共著論文をまとめることができた。

  地方部での多文化共生社会の構築に向けて、現場の外国人住民の状況や受け入れ先および受け入れ地域の状況について情報や資料の収集、遠隔によるヒアリング調査等を中心とした知見の蓄積に努めた。コロナ禍により、現地を直接訪問しての調査や資料収集が困難な状況にあったため、二次資料の収集と分析、オンラインでの情報収集、オンラインによる研究発表会の実施と報告書の作成などの重点を置いた形で研究を遂行した。


• Establishing the contemporary sociology of time: Conceptions of social time elucidated via integration of axiomatic method and theoretical, historical, and applied studies

  This research project a) elucidated the axiomatic systems of the concept of social time (Sorokin & Merton), the four ideal types of time (Mita), and the time concept in sociological systems theory (Luhmann), b) clarified a part of the history of the sociology of time in terms of “social time”, c) clarified the relationship between collectivity, individuality and social time on the basis of the time theory of Halbwachs and Durkheim, d) indicated the potentialities of Luhmann’s conception of time as communication medium and its forms, e) elucidated that the idea of Indefinite Progress had been always contested by such ideas as Regress and Cycle in the nineteenth century Western thought, f) interpreted Mita’s theory of nihilism as a question of modern sense of instrumentalism and exchange value.

  This research in the conclusion confirms that in the early history of Austrian sociology interdisciplinary relationships have been shown between humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, that social psychology has widely contributed to early Austrian sociology, and that immigrant and emigrant sociologists from Austria has spread research methods and insights. Especially in Austria, in particular in Graz, early sociological studies have been carried not necessarily by sociologists so-called today, but by not a little number of the other discipline's scholars. In the 1920's, Hugo Spitzer, a subsupervisor of Fritz Heider's doctoral thesis, has established a chair of philosophical sociology. It is a remaining question to be further researched whether and how Heider has accepted not only natural scientific and philosophical knowledges but also sociological insights.

• 「時間の社会学的な時間化」のプログラム――ニクラス・ルーマンの多元的な時間論から

  本研究課題「『時間の社会学的な時間化』のプログラム――ニクラス・ルーマンの多元的な時間論から」の実施２年度目である平成30年度は、社会システム理論と現象学における「同時性」というテーマに関わるルーマンの論文・著作、関連する先行研究および二次文献の講読を行い、ルーマンの時間論を社会システム理論と現象学の側面を対比させながら検討した。 その中で、ルーマンの時間論の重要な構成要素として浮上したのが「非同時的なものの同時性」の概念である。しかし、ルーマン自身がこの概念の含意を十分に規定していなかったため、本研究であらためてこの概念の系譜と、それを踏まえたルーマンの用法を検討した。そこで明らかになったのは、始めにＷ・ピンダーが美術史の中の世代論で「同時的なものの非同時性」という考えを提起し、それをＫ・マンハイムが社会学的な世代論の中で「非同時的なものの同時性」と転じて定着させ、さらに世代論にとどまらず社会的不均衡を指す時代診断の概念として発展させており、Ｅ・ブロッホの『この時代の遺産』もその普及に寄与したことであった。その後、Ｒ・コゼレックの歴史的意味論が「非同時的なものの同時性」を歴史に関わる時間的な経験様相として拡大し、その影響を受けたルーマンの社会システム理論がシステムの時間に関わる問題として一般化した。 また「非同時的なものの同時性」概念の系譜を検討する中でさらに現われてきたのが、「非同時的なものの同時性」における観察者の問題である。この問題は、社会システム理論と現象学の双方における「同時性」概念にも、またルーマンの時間論全体にも関わる問題であった。特にルーマンの時間論において、ルーマン自身が十分に検討したなかった問題として、「作動時間」と「観察時間」の区別が先行研究で示唆されており、今後はルーマンの時間論全体の構成に関わるこの区別について引き続き検討する。

  The purpose of this research project is to show tasks to support for the foreign residents in Japanese rural areas, and for coexistense of foreign residents and host communities. For the purpose, we researched several areas(Ehime,Okayama,Shimane prefecture and so on), and presented the achievement in our study group and academic societies. In addition, we published an academic book about this thema,in February, 2019.

  Today, sociology is facing a crisis. Crisis in which its uniqueness as a discipline becoming vague, power to appeal itself to the outer world getting weak and the number of sociology students turns out be less and less. To cope with this crisis on a fundamental level, it is necessary to deepen a "self-reflexive sociology" which elucidates the construction process and deployment of sociology. For this purpose, the sociology we focused on was that of Emile DURKHEIM with the following perspectives: 1) how he succeeded in establishing the discipline in France, 2) how his sociology was interpreted and transmitted by the subsequent generations, 3) how his sociology was accepted outside France, and 4) what kind of sociology education has been and should be done. During four years of study, we succeeded to produce 25 article and three books. On top of that, we are now getting ready to publish two books, one is an academic research work and the other a textbook on E. Durkheim.

  This research has clarified that Fritz Heider, known as founder of attribution theory and balance theory in social psychology, has concepted the original idea of attribuition in his early studies for perceptual psychology in Austria, especially in his unpublished doctoral thesis and he has applied the concept of ZUORDNUNG, which has been discussed mainly in contemporary natural sciences and logical empiricism, to perceptual psychology and thereafter has expanded its idea to attribution concept in social psychology.
