• Application of gamma radiation for disinfection of fungi in a large volume of historical archives damaged by flood following Typhoon Hagibis 2019, Japan: A case report.

  A large volume of historical archives was extensively damaged by flood water, following Typhoon Hagibis in Fukushima, Japan, in October 2019. They were rescued from the stricken area within a week, however, the prolonged exposure of paper documents to water caused severe biodegradation by fungal growth. To disinfect fungi, the paper documents were exposed to gamma radiations emitted by a source of Cobalt 60 by the industrial irradiation service. The wet paper documents were mainly contaminated with hydrophilic and cellulolytic fungi, including Trichoderma, Stachybotrys, and Fusarium; no fungi grew after irradiation. These results indicated that the average absorbed dosage from 13.1 kGy to 16.1 kGy were sufficient to disinfect paper documents heavily contaminated with fungi. In the present study, we demonstrated the successful practical use of irradiation in fungi-damaged paper documents using a commercial gamma-irradiation facility.

• Examples of Preservation and First Aid Measures for Photographs of Flood Damage by Shiryo-net, as an Activity to Rescue “Memories”

  In the wake of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake that occurred in 1995, a volunteer group “shiryo-net” was established. We rescued historical documents in cooperation with the cultural property department in the disaster area, members of the local history research groups, and local residents. I will report on the methods and problems with the preservation and first aid of photographic materials that were damaged by sewage.

• 水損資料に発生したカビ類の放射線殺菌の実証試験

  自然災害により水損し、カビ汚染が生じた古文書の対策として、実際に洪水により被災した江戸時代期、明治期の古文書の汚染カビを分離同定するとともにコバルト-60γ線による殺菌効果を調べた。その結果、13.1kGyから16.1kGyの平均吸収線量で⁶⁰Coガンマ線を照射した文書から分離したカビ類の生育は認められず、十分滅菌可能であることが示された。

  ベトナム側の共同研究者がベトナムの文化財のうち微生物汚染や修復の必要性のある文化財資料の候補、すなわちグエン王朝時代の文書の木製の版木をはじめ、ベトナム国内に所蔵されている木製資料、紙資料、絹資料のカビ汚染状況の文献を調査し、当該研究者の所属機関（ダラット大学）があるラムドン州の博物館の関係者と直接対話して調査を行った。またこれらの関係者から得られた版木の資料についてカビの汚染状況の調査と菌体収集を行い、所属機関（ダラット大学）の低エネルギーX線の装置を用いて予備的な殺菌試験を行い、基礎的なデータを得て殺菌可能性を確認した。すなわちベトナムグェン王朝の版木から分離されたカビの中で，最も放射線抵抗性の株はCladosporium sp. であった。 版木中心部のカビは表面6.2 kGy の照射で4 桁減少し，8.3 kGy で検出されなくなった。これらの結果から，版木中の汚染カビはX 線（F1）を用いた両面照射により，線量10 kGy，線量均一度1.04 で効果的な殺菌が可能であることが示された。日本側研究者も文献検索を行い、ZOOMシステムによるオンライン会合により、上記のベトナム側の予備試験条件の策定をともに行った。この結果を踏まえ、ベトナム側研究者と必要な実験条件、研究環境構築についてのプランを作成した。それに従い、研究代表者は必要備品の発注のための業者選定、ベトナム側への設置方法について必要な手続きを完了した。
  以上の検討の途中で、ベトナム側のX線照射装置が故障し、日越両国のコロナ禍のために装置の修理、整備が遅延し、今後の復旧の目処が立たない状況下、代替の装置を保有する東京都立産業技術研究センターとの共同研究体制の構築し、予備実験を継続している。


• From Local Historical Material Studies to Regional Historical Culture: Creation of a New Research Field for Resilient Local Communities in a Country of Natural Disasters

  当初計画の方針「災害時の地域歴史資料学研究を基礎とした地域歴史文化創成の基盤整備」に基づき、研究課題の整理や資料保全関連データの収集を行い、各研究領域による研究を進める他、2019年東日本台風における被災資料保全に関する実践的研究を進めた。 2019年6月から特命助教2名を任用して神戸大コアグループの研究体制を構築し、研究グループ全体の研究体制を整備した。8月には科研グループ最初の全体研究会を開催した。9月には第1回地域歴史資料学研究会を開催し、地域歴史資料継承をめぐる課題について整理した。2018年成立の改正文化財保護法を受け、2019年7～9月に兵庫県文化遺産防災研修会を行い、大学・自治体が連携した歴史資料防災の手法に関して研究を進めた。 2019年10月にブリュッセルで国際シンポジウムを行い、地域歴史資料保全活動の意義や、地域歴史資料データインフラ構築について研究代表者・分担者が報告した。文化財等保全のための国際的共同事業について討議し、新たな国際的研究プラットフォームの構築を準備した。 研究計画に従い2020年1・2月にはキックオフフォーラムおよび阪神・淡路大震災フィールドワークを開催した。阪神・淡路大震災以降培われた地域歴史資料学をめぐる研究状況を報告し、現地研究会ではフォーラムの成果を総括した。地域住民を核とする地域歴史資料継承の基盤となる地域歴史資料データインフラ「khirin C」については、システムを構築できた。 2019年10月には東日本台風が発災した。甚大な被害を受けた東日本各地において、水損資料保全活動にかかる地域住民や各地資料ネットとの連携に基づいた実践的研究を深化させた。 A班「地域歴史資料継承領域」、B班「地域歴史資料インフラ構築領域」、C班「災害文化を内包した地域社会形成史研究領域」の各領域では研究会を開催し、実践的・理論的研究を進めた。

  We have advanced practical research on the disaster areas of the Great East Japan Earthquake and other devastated ones based on progress in Local Historical Materials Studies after the 1995 Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. Collaborating with a highly diversified community of historians and cultural studies researchers, including those in adjacent sciences, a new development was created in the practical methodology for materials preservation and the construction of a disaster prevention system for cultural assets. Furthermore, from an international perspective, we examined the preservation and utilization of disaster materials, including digital archives both in Japan and overseas since the 2011 catastrophe, as well as practical methodologies for passing on disaster memories in a local community. Our domestic/international conference presentations have established the basis for international collaboration on Local Historical Materials Studies.


• Modern language translation of the early modern Nankai earthquake record; Practical research for local application to disaster prevention and mitigation activities

  In this research, we systematically collected and analyzed the disaster records written by people at the time of the Tonankai-Nankai earthquake tsunami that occurred in the early modern period, and promoted the translation of the disaster records into a modern language. In particular, we pointed out that many earthquake and tsunami disaster records were recorded in terms of both locality and regionality, and clarified that this was due to the dual meaning of disasters. We made a modern translation of the disaster record, eliminating the obstacles that make it difficult to read historical material, in response to the demand of the local people of today who want to decipher the disaster records transmitted to the area. We visited the area where we had a disaster in the early modern period, and held lectures and workshops.

  Perpetual natural disasters and structural changes in the Japanese local communities place a vast number of historical materials existing in the communities at risk for loss or damage. This research was set to establish "local historical document studies". The results are as the followings: 1) Construction of the systematic research method of the materials: we considered not only historical researchers but also locals are key players of the protection and application of the records. 2) Establishment of new concrete methods for preserving and repairing the materials: this is a crucial part of the systematic research method mentioned above. 3)Contribution to the preservation of local historical materials after the Great East Japan Earthquake:our research proposed principles and methods of the saving after the calamity. 4) International publication of the local historical document studies: this project presented the new studies to the world as a global issue.


• Approach of the disaster culture to forming the historical landscape in pre-modern Japan

  In this study, we investigated the effects of natural disasters had on the formation of the historic landscape and regional order in pre-modern Japan. Specifically, We clarified that by focusing on regional use of irrigation water is a prerequisite for paddy agriculture, natural disasters deeply involved in the transformation of water diversion practices, and had a major impact on the formation of the regional order and landscape. It was confirmed through the current state of conservation of disaster monument by the efforts of local residents, that the accumulation of disaster culture has progressed in the community. It was found that this is what legends and lore related to flood control and disaster, reflecting the practical correspond and the memory of regional disaster.
