  • Studies on the Distribution of Human Capital and Globalization: An Introductory Overview
    MA Yan
In this paper, I survey the recent literature that theoretically investigates how globalization is affected by the distribution of skills and the effects of globalization on income distribution. I focus on two types of matching: matching between (the same type and different types of) workers and matching between workers and tasks (industries).

In this project, we firstly study how task sensitivity and task complementarity affect the formation of global supply chain in a setup of two countries with different skill levels and many tasks (N discrete tasks or a continuum of tasks). In addition, we investigate how the changes in task sensitivity due to technological progress affect the global supply chain and income distributions. Next, we develop a framework where there are a continuum of workers who differ in their skill levels and the production involves two tasks with one task more skill sensitive than the other. Two workers form a team with each worker performing one task, which allow us to examine how the distribution of skills affect the matching of workers and the tasks in which they are assigned. Moreover, we explore how offshoring affects the the matching patterns and income distributions.

In this study, we developed a model of global supply chain to investigate how globalization affects global supply chains and make use of the data from international input-output table to empirically test our theoretical results. In addition, we theoretically and empirically analyzed the spillover effect of foreign direct investments and firms' decisions on whether to perform foreign direct investments. Moreover, we theoretically examined the effects of distributions of human capital on task trade, wages and welfare, and provided a prediction for future empirical study. Finally, we theoretically investigated the effects of the fragmentation of production processes internationally on the earth environment and also examined the effects of environment protection polices on environment and welfare.

In this study, we analyze the relationship between international trade, foreign direct investment (FDI), and the environmental problems. Using firm-level data, we examine how firm's export behavior affects its emission of greenhouse gases and energy efficiency. We also empirically investigate how FDI affects firms' environmental behavior within the same industry and the upstream/downstream industries in the host country through environmental spillovers. Moreover, we conduct various theoretical analyses by game theoretic models and dynamic models on border tax adjustments as a climate change policy, the formation of international environmental treaties, and market competition and trade for eco-goods and second-hand goods. Finally, we empirically examine factors to affect the consumers' demand for second-hand goods, based on the data obtained from experiments.

There is much evidence that customer reviews are important to merchants' sales. However, little is deeply discussed about how much the online reviews affect sales, and the validity of the influence also lacks supports of empirical studies. This study posits that sales effects of customer reviews are different by market structure.
We propose a Bayesian statistical model to study how customer reviews affect sales and the difference in its influence between two types of merchants, market-place and self-conducted stores. The data in this study are retrieved by using Web Crawling technology. The findings suggest that (1) sales effects of review volume will be attenuates by the information of sales outcomes in previous period, (2) compared with self-conducted stores, the volume of customer reviews seem more effective on sales for merchants in market-place, and (3) the effects of review valence on sales are also somewhat stronger for market-place stores than it for self-conducted stores.

This research project explores the engines of economic growth in both developed and developing countries. More specifically, I have investigated the following topics: (1) The impacts of the distribution of human capital on economic growth and income distribution in developed countries; (2) The timing of an innovating firm to relocate the production of a new product from the developed country to the developing country, and the interaction between the production location and the rate of quality improvement; (3) The impacts of two types of knowledge linkages on the internationally fragmented production process and global welfare, respectively; (4) The impacts of task characteristics on the internationally fragmented production process. In dealing with each topic, I developed a specific trade model with some new features that have not been considered in the existing literature. Owing to these new features, I successfully obtained some findings that would contribute to the literature.
