• Hockey at Marlborough College, 1874-1886: Succession of the Association Game Played under the Rules of the Hockey Association Established in 1875

  1875年に設立されたホッケーアソシエーションは、イングランド初のホッケーの統括組織であった。この組織が制定した統一ルールに基づくゲーム（1875年アソシエーションゲームとする）は一定の普及を見たものの、組織自体は存続しなかった。同名称の別組織が新設され、新ルールが示されたのは1886年であった。この新ルール制定に至るまでの、1875年アソシエーションゲームの実態については、地域のクラブの活動を中心に検討されてきた。しかし最初の統括組織の設立には二つの学校も関与していた。これらの学校が1875年アソシエーションゲームの展開に及ぼした影響については十分解明されていない。本研究では、この二校のうちマールバラ校に焦点を当て、1886年までの同校のホッケーのゲーム実施状況を検討した。結果、1874年以降、クリケット、フットボールに次ぐ集団スポーツとしてホッケ

  問題史研究を行うスポーツ史家は、その問題との関連がほとんどないように思われるスポーツ種目をしばしば無視する。これは方法論として当然のことかもしれない。しかしながら、特にイギリス近代スポーツ史研究において、検討されてきた種目には顕著な偏りがあることが指摘されていることから、いまだ十分に語られていない種目に焦点を当てた歴史研究は、問題史研究とは異なる視角から通史認識の深化に重要な貢献をなし得るはずである。本稿では、はじめに、上述した検討対象種目の偏りに起因するイギリス近代スポーツ史像形成の問題点について指摘する。続いて、近代スポーツ史像の再検討を促す可能性を含む、以下三点のイギリスホッケー史の研究成果を示す。1)アスレティシズム興隆期のパブリックスクールにおけるホッケーの低調な実施状況。2)スポーツの組織化の展開期における、組織化されたホッケーの様式（ユ

• Adoption and Retention of the Cricket Ball as the Hockey Ball in Late Niniteenth-Century England

  In the year 1886, the Hockey Association of England made history by adopting an ordinary cricket ball painted white as the official hockey ball. As hockey continued to gain global acceptance, its widespread diffusion served to maintain the trend of using a ball made of cricket-ball material. However, by the end of the nineteenth century, English hockey players had already begun to question the suitability of this ball. This debate led to a trial match being organized to test new balls that were intended to replace the cricket ball. Judging from the chronology of events and the result of this crucial trial match, this article aims to elucidate the initial circumstances that surrounded the ultimate decision to retain the cricket ball as the official hockey ball. The insights gleaned from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) The Hockey Association claimed that the cricket ball was not adopted until various other balls had been well tried. However, hockey players had not found the basis for this adoption very persuasive. It was the consensus of hockey players, rooted in their experience of playing the sport, that paved the way for this experiment with new balls. (2) H. F. Battersby and the Hockey Association arranged for the trial match to be played on Wimbledon Common with the aid of F. H. Ayres, a well-known manufacturer from London. Needless to say, the match had a single predetermined purpose: to ascertain whether the new balls were more suitable than the cricket ball. However, the new balls failed to live up to their much-touted advantages, and did not find favor with the players. In other words, from the viewpoint of those who wished to introduce the new balls, the trial match was an utter failure.

• The Union game of hockey in England : 1887-1895

  The purpose of this study was to consider the spread and decline of the Union game of hockey as played under the rules of the National Hockey Union (NHU) in England. The historical materials used were derived mainly from the minutes of the NHU, and local and sporting newspapers. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1) The NHU was a governing body that adopted and standardized the Blackheath game as played under the rules of the Blackheath Hockey Club. The clubs in Bristol usually conducted meetings of the NHU. Spread of the clubs affiliated to the NHU was confined to within Bristol and Blackheath, and the number of HNU clubs never exceeded 13 or 14. 2) The rules of play were similar under both the Blackheath game and the Union game. However, new regulations were added to the Union game, including shortening of the distance between the goals, introduction of umpires and a referee, and codifying the penalties for infractions of the rules. 3) After the formation of the NHU, the Union game achieved regular popularity in and around Bristol. The game was at its peak in the season 1891 / 92. 4) After the season 1893 / 94, the Association game as played under the rules of the Hockey Association gained favor in the West of England. The Union game, on the other hand, lost its popularity. Because of the principal Union clubs adopting the Association game and becoming affiliated to the WCHA, which was the Western branch of the Hockey Association, the NHU was dissolved in March 1895. The decline of the Union game can be explained by the broad diffusion of the Association game and the gap between the ideals of the Union and the Association games.

  日本体育・スポーツ・健康学会第71回大会, Sep. 2021, Japanese, 日本体育・スポーツ・健康学会, 筑波大学 （オンライン開催）, 本研究では、19世紀末以降のイギリスで出版された、技術解説書や手引書、年鑑などのホッケー書を史料として、これらの書の著者が、特にイングランドの女性のゲームの普及過程をいかに認識し、記述していたのか、またその認識は、1914年までの時期に、いかに変化したと評価できるかについて検討した。性差に基づき、異なる全国的組織に統括された男性、女性のゲームの普及は、主に男女の統括組織関係者を著者とするホッケー書の出版を伴った。男性の統括組織の役員であったクレスウェルが1890年に出版した、ホッケーのみを扱う最初の単著には、女性のホッケーに関する記述は見られなかった。しかし、1895年のバタースビーの書は、女性のホッケーについて1つの章を充て、スミス、ロブソンらによる1899年刊の大部の書、Hockey: Historical and Practicalは、全4部のうち第3部で女性のホッケーを扱い、女性の著者による２つの章を含んでいた。1901年、ピカリングは、女性著者による、女性のホッケーに関する最初の単著、Hockey for Ladiesを執筆し、1904年には、女性著者による、最も詳細な技術解説書となったHockey as a Game for Womenをトムソンが出版した。以降、初版出版時には男性のホッケーのみに言及が限定されていた書にも、改訂を経て女性のホッケーに関する章が追加されるようになった。これらの書の中で、女性のホッケーの普及のイメージは、一部の有閑な女性に求められた新たなスポーツから、広い階層の女性たちから人気を集める冬季のボールゲームへと更新されていった。, Domestic conference

• 1908年オリンピックロンドン大会におけるホッケーの大会規定の制定過程に関する研究

  東北アジア体育・スポーツ史学会第12回大会, Jul. 2017, Japanese, 中華人民共和国 浙江師範大学国際交流センター, 20世紀初頭のオリンピックに新たな競技が採用された時、その競技の大会規定は、オリンピックに固有の規定といかなる関係を持ちながら成文化されたのだろうか。これらの問題の検討には、国家を超えてスポーツを規律し、世界に影響を与えてきた、オリンピックとオリンピックムーブメントに適用される法の総称である「Lex Olympica」の体系の初期的形成過程の解明に資する、という点から、重要な意義を見い出せる。以上の関心から、本研究は、1908年オリンピックロンドン大会において新規採用されたホッケーに焦点を当て、この競技の大会規定の制定過程を解明することを目的とした。ブリティッシュオリンピックアソシエーション（BOA）議事録、1908年ロンドン大会趣意書、計画書、報告書、ホッケー関連雑誌等を本研究の主要史料として用いた。研究の結果、オリンピックにおける最初のホッケーの, International conference

  The 65th Conference of Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Science, Aug. 2014, Japanese, 岩手大学, 問題史研究を行うスポーツ史家は、その問題との関連がほとんどないように思われるスポーツ種目をしばしば無視する。これは方法論として当然のことかもしれない。しかしながら、特にイギリス近代スポーツ史研究において、検討されてきた種目には顕著な偏りがあることが指摘されていることから、いまだ十分に語られていない種目に焦点を当てた歴史研究は、問題史研究とは異なる視角から通史認識の深化に重要な貢献をなし得るはずである。本シンポジウムでは、はじめに、上述した検討対象種目の偏りに起因するイギリス近代スポーツ史像形成の問題点について指摘する。続いて、近代スポーツ史像の再検討を促す可能性を含む、以下三点のイギリスホッケー史の研究成果を示す。1)アスレティシズム興隆期のパブリックスクールにおけるホッケーの低調な実施状況。2)スポーツの組織化の展開期における、組織化されたホッケー, Domestic conference

• Study on System and Influence of Lex Olympica

  In this study, we have clarified the legal system of the Lex Olympica that is a system of law related to the Olympics, and especially the relationship and structure between the Lex Olympica and the international sport law so-called the Lex Sportiva. And we have clarified the whole aspect of legal norms build around the Olympic Charter. We have also clarified historical changes of legal norms in the Lex Olymica, including the fundamental principles of Olympism. Furthermore, we have clarified the impact of Lex Olympica on legal systems such as anti-doping, sports arbitration and governance, as well as on national sports laws and systems in other countries.
