Since the publication of Darwin's The Origin of Species, evolutionism has produced great effects on various fields. First of all, in contrast witli the ancient natural history which was exclusively preoccupied with the static classification of species, it has given rise to a dynamic comprehension of life based on the principles such as "struggle of existence" or "natural selection". It has not only limited itself to a mere biological theory ; but contributed greatly to the paradigm shift in human and social sciences such as philosophy, psychology, economics, sociology, anthropology, etc. And with the term of "social Darwinism", we already know much about its ideological application to the explication and the justification of social and political phenomena. Organized with several researchers working on different specific topics, our research aimed basically to explore such interdisciplinary and multidimensional impact of evolutionism. One of the essential understandings we have finally obtained is that evolutional concepts sometimes have contradictory ambiguity. Capitalists and socialists remain both to be evolutionist, for example, attaching the opposite meaning to the idea of struggle of existence. This is partly because evolutionary thought had drawn its inspiration not only from Darwin, but from various authors. Though much is not mentioned to him in our time, Spencer had great theoretical influence in the late nineteenth century : his system includes various disciplines which encompass from metaphysics to social theory. Preceding half a century to Darwin, Lamarck had developed in France his own evolutionary thought, with the emphasis on the inheritance of acquired characters and the internal force of evolution. And it is well known that the author of The Origin of Species owed much to Malthus and his political economy theory on population. Thus evolutionism consists essentially in the complicated assemblage of knowledge which has reciprocating action by the term of metaphors and analogies, among several disciplines, or between science and society. In this intellectual process, there has sometimes been misunderstandings and theoretical distortions which we made efforts to describe in our research.

  • Reexamination of the "Post-modernistic" Discourse in the First Half of the 20th Century

    1. In the first half of the 20th century, the "crisis" of modern human sciences began to surface, and then the problem of how to overcome it became the main subject in various fields : some disciplines were reconstructed from a new perspective ; others, such as anthropology and psychoanalysis, were newly formed. And these earthshaking changes of paradigms in modern human sciences must have been, more or less, correlative with the "crisis" of modern society itself. This study has attempted to give a critical analysis of philosophical, scientific or aesthetic discourse during this period, in order to shed some light on its complex connection with social and political conditions. 2. We have focused attention on the "post-modernistic" discourse druring the 1930s and 1940s in Japan, such as philosophical discourse of Kyoto School (NISHIDA Kitaro, TANABE Hajime) and aesthetic discourse of Japanese Romanticism (YASUDA Yojuro), because we have thought of it as the case in point. Such discourse intends to retrieve "the primary" that has already lost in modern times, or to construct a ideal community which can overcome the limit of modern liberal-democratic society, but it is exactly a imaginary idea produced by modern consciousness. We arrive at the conclusion that the "post-modernistic" discourse in interwar Japan has in fact a "modernistic" character, for it is characteristic of modern consciousness to critisize or denies itself. We have clarified such a self-reflexive structure included in the "post-modernistic" discourse by researching many texts in various fields.

  • A Basic Project to Establish Micro-Anthropology

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), KYOTO UNIVERSITY, 1998 - 2000
This three-year project was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Masakazu TANAKA of Kyoto University to establish the basis of Micro-Anthropology. We have tentatively specified the following three domains to explore as the sub-fields of Micro-Anthropology. They are : topics to take for Micro-Anthropology; relationships between scholars and those studied ; theoretical geneaology. We organized 21 seminars, where 34 papers were presented and discussed. In the first sub-field, body, emotion, speach/narrative were picked up. The second sub-field is concerned with anthropologists experiences in the fields and their implications to a wider theoretical perspective. Finally some analyze significant concepts such as individual, subject and agent in the context of the modern development of Western thoughts. The collection of the articles based on the above seminars will be published by a Kyoto-based publisher, SekaiShisousha, in 2002. Furthermore, the newly constructed database of the.anthropological literature regarding Micro-Anthropology was made open to the public on the internet. Its URL is as follows ; http://www.zinbun.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~shakti/database/micro.html
