• A Study of Multicultural Music Education in the United States— Focusing on the Teaching Plan of Multicultural Music Education Since 1967 —

  It's one of the aims of multicultural education to eliminate prejudice and discrimination against minorities. One of the aims of multicultural music education, therefore, is to reduce prejudice and discrimination through learning the music and culture of other ethnic groups. The purpose of this study is to get to the root of the discrepancy between the ideal and practice of multicultural music education in the United States through its development since 1967. The following two factors are considered the cause of the discrepancy. One factor is that "multicultural music" has been used synonymously with "World Music", whose causes are 1) intention of achieving the aim of multicultural music education within a range of music education, 2) the change of the concept of music with the learning development of ethnic music and World Music. The other is that learning of multicultural music education can't completely separate learning of musical elements. According to the above understanding, multicultural music education in the United States shows a hybrid in multicultural education and music education.

• Modeling of Physical Knowledge Acquisition Process using Piano Playing Support System

  This research project proposes a multifaceted approach to supporting and evaluating piano practice. First, long-term practice data from beginner pianists were collected and analyzed using a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) to visualize changes in performance errors. Next, learners' metacognition and instructors' evaluations were integrated through surveys and performance records to visualize the learning process. Furthermore, a method for automatically evaluating performance from audio data was developed, confirming the correlation between performance and teachers' evaluations. These efforts propose effective methods for supporting and evaluating piano practice and verify their effectiveness.


• Rhythm Tuner: A Novel Music Practice Support System to Visualize Embodies Knowledge

  We have developed a rhythm tuner, a system that visually supports improving musical instrument learners' physical knowledge, especially the acquisition process of rhythmic feeling. We devised and implemented a method to determine threshold parameters for onset detection without annotations automatically. Besides, we collected performance data records for about 120 piano players for a year in order to analyze the long-term process of acquiring performance proficiency. We also conducted a questionnaire survey to investigate the players' difficulties, and the result showed needs to visualize the players' performance.


• Development in Kindergarten and Elementary School Cooperate Multicultural Music Learning Approach for Multicultural Coexistence

  Focusing on the United States and Australia where conduct pioneering education on multicultural music education, this research revealed the learning contents and approach methods by analyzing and reviewing the music curriculums and various local practices. As a result, it became clear that the National Core Arts Standards (2014) in the United States has no longer specified the viewpoint of “multicultural” directly but evaluates music metaphysically and emphasizes grasping a music from its intention and context. And, through practice analysis and curriculum analysis in Australia, it was found that the curriculums consistently thinks musical experiences accompanied by musical understanding and aims to nourish musical ability in the level of human nature.


• Basic study on the program development to foster the ability for appraising music based on the ability for listening and review

  As a result of a research on the ability to listening and receive music to become the base of the ability for appraising music, it became clear that a difference of quantity and the quality of the music experience influenced abilities difference. As a result of a comparative study on curricula about appraising music of concerned countries, the following facts were revealed. The ratio that contents (knowledge and skills), the subject-specific competencies in school music education, and generic competencies occupied varied according to concerned countries. As a result of a study on the superior instruction methods, it was cleared that systematic instruction of listening ability forms the basis of all music activities. The ability for listening and review is acquired naturally by repeating music activities to cultivate basic ability. This process leads to fostering the ability for appraising music.


• A Study of Process Skill-Oriented Curriculum Development in Early Childhood Science Education

  The purpose of our study is (1) to develop systematic scientific activities from 3- to 8-year-old young children and to make the developmental viewpoints suitable for various scientific activities. The main results of our study are as follows; (1) the total amount of developed scientific activities is 33 for 3 years. 17 scientific activities are for young children in kindergarten and 16 ones for in primary school. (2) Some characteristics of young child’s exploration could be found by analyzing their “Words” and “Behavior”. Firstly Young children tend to gaze their interested objects for a while. Secondly they tend to throw a look at their friends’ behavior and conservation when they did not know how to do it during their exploration. (3) Eight kinds of the developmental viewpoints during their exploration which can affect the formation of scientific literacy could be extracted from the data of transcripts.


• A basic study for development of multicultural music education curriculum based on the cultural background of Japan

  In this study I clarified the historical background of multicultural music education, focused on the U.S. that has promoted it progressively. As a result it was made clear that the multicultural perspective was incorporated into the frameworks such as the cultivation of Comprehensive Musicianship, one of the objectives in the Contemporary Music Project implemented in the 1960s. It is especially remarkable that the concept of "multiculturalism" was expressed in the educational reform, independently from the civil-rights movement in which this concept was supposedly originated.
