    The flow structure change of liquid jet in air crossflow was analyzed by means of quantitative image analysis. High-speed camera systems are introduced that enables us to know the sequential behavior of liquid jet atomization. A visualization was carried out in a wind tunnel, and detected visualized images were evaluated by an atomization index proposed by one of the authors.

    Abstract: The paper reports on a pressure measurement of underwater shock waves generated by collapse of a vapor bubble using the background-oriented schlieren (BOS) technique. In the BOS system, the vapor bubble is induced by an underwater electric discharge. To estimate background-element displacement induced by the underwater shock wave, a spatiotemporal derivative (STD) algorithm is applied in image processing. Furthermore, the accuracy of the STD algorithm is evaluated using the images obtained with our BOS system relative to the cross-correlation method. Subsequently, the pressure distributions are obtained by solving the Poisson equation and applying a filtered-back projection algorithm. An experiment to visualize the behaviors of the underwater shock waves is also carried out using the shadowgraph method. As a result, the pressure waveforms estimated by the BOS technique keep consistent with that in experimental profiles. The pressure attenuations behind the underwater shock wave are also in good agreements with the experimental measurements. It is expected that the BOS technique will probably overcome the problems associated with the conventional method of pressure measurement related to the collapse of microbubbles, and becomes a promising means of quantitatively measuring high-speed phenomena.     In a nozzle hole of a diesel fuel injector, string cavitation may appear along the nozzle-hole axis which affects the fuel spray characteristics. Previous studies concluded that string cavitation is the result of the complex swirling flow in the upstream region. However, the mechanism of the swirling flow formation, the condition of string cavitation appearance, and its effects on the injected liquid jet are not well understood. In this study, visualization of cavitation in a cylindrical nozzle hole with an asymmetric inflow from various simple rectangular upstream channels was conducted. The effects of needle lift and the number of nozzle holes were examined by changing the height and the width of the upstream channel, respectively. High-speed images of string cavitation formation were captured. A simple numerical simulation was carried out to qualitatively examine the velocity and pressure distributions. As a result, we clarify the condition of string cavitation formation and propose the string cavitation regime maps which take dimensionless needle lift and liquid velocity as major parameters. We find that string cavitation and a resulting swirling hollow-cone liquid skirt are formed at low needle lift and high liquid velocity, while at high needle lift no string cavitation is formed. Under the narrower upstream channel width condition, which represents a fuel injector with many nozzle holes, string cavitation occurs only at much lower needle lift and higher liquid velocity. The numerical results show a good agreement with the experiment results; i.e., a slanted swirling inflow with low pressure along its axis is formed in the nozzle hole only under the low needle lift condition.

    The behavior of hydrodynamic forces acting on a ship at lateral motion was investigated. Force measurement in towing tank and numerical simulation on viscous flow field were made, and correlations of hydrodynamic forces with flow field around ships were examined. A large flow pattern change at extreme shallow water case such as H/d<1.20 was observed in model scale, and it causes serious characteristics change of lateral force. Present characteristics change could be caused by the pre ssure loss at the gap between sea bottom and ship bottom, which may be referred by 'retaining effect', and that generates the upstream flow pattern and separation pattern change.

    Present paper describes the correlation between occurrence of cavitation inside injector nozzle and progress of atomization in discharged liquid jet flow. A transparent two-dimensional shape nozzle was designed and it was used for flow visualization. The visualized images both of cavitation and atomization were obtained simultaneously. The cavitation was evaluated by applying image analysis. The quantitative analysis on length, thickness and their fluctuations of cavitation was made, and the correlation with atomization was examined. The authors proposed an evaluation method of atomization in the previous study, and it was combined with evaluation method of cavitation developed in this study. It is found that the change of cavitation and progress of atomization are synchronized, and that a strong correlation between them exists. The best performance of atomization may be obtained by controlling the cavitation inside nozzle, and obtained aspects with this study will be utilized for the design of fuel injection nozzle of internal combustion engines.

    The correlation between the development of atomization and flow field in a liquid jet was investigated. A fuel injector is widely used for internal combustion engines, and injection with high-quality atomization is vital for better thermal efficiencies. The present study aims at establishing a research approach for finding the fundamental mechanism of atomization enhancement. A simple two-dimensional nozzle was designed and a liquid jet flow was visualized by using a high-speed camera system. An evaluation index of atomization by means of image analysis was proposed. The proposed approach is based on an idea that the essence of atomization in fuel injection will be the ratio between the surface area and the volume of a fuel. The evaluation index enables us to know the degree of atomization quantitatively, so that the procedure of atomization enhancement has been clarified. The velocity field was obtained by applying the PIV analysis to a visualized image, and the correlation with atomization enhancement was examined. Fine linear relationships between the progress rate of atomization and standard deviation of velocity gradients were found. The fundamental mechanism of the atomization enhancement was discussed based on the obtained evaluation results.

    A magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) method of oil separation from contaminated seawater is based on the difference in the electric conductivity between seawater and oil; the separation force applied to oil induced by the electromagnetic force is used to separate the oil. A new electrode partitioning MHD separation method has been designed and studied. This method has the advantage of utilizing a wide space with a uniform electromagnetic force, even though the superconducting magnet used has a nonuniform field distribution. Experimental results for the separation characteristics obtained from the electrode partitioning MHD method in a high magnetic field of 10 T using a mixture of artificial seawater and simulation particles instead of oil droplets are discussed.

    本研究は,従来の時空間微分法を発展させ,高次項を考慮した新しいサブピクセル解析手法を提案するとともに,その解析精度の検証を行ったものである.提案する手法では,輝度の移流方程式において2階のテイラー展開まで考慮した支配方程式を用いている.これにより,計測対象量は速度場だけでなく,その時空間勾配も含められることとなり,さらに,この支配方程式では,高次部分において速度に関する非線形項が現れる.本論文では,これらの要件に対応するアルゴリズムを構築し,解析システムの開発を行なった.開発した手法をVSJ標準画像に適用して性能評価を行った結果,従来の手法よりも高い精度確保と一部の誤差要因に対する特性改善が図られたことを示した.本研究で開発した高次展開手法は,サブピクセル解析の基本性能の向上に貢献するものと考えられる.

    The unsteady hydrodynamic forces acting on a berthing ship model was examined, and an procedure for the analysis of measured result in towing tank was considered. The blockage effect could be a problem if we execute the large attack angle lateral force measurement in towing tank, and it will be much serious in the case of shallow water. The authors proposed an experimental procedure, which enables us to carry out the test in towing tank. The proposal employ the normal size model ship with the resistance test, and the blockage effect was avoided by towing the model normal to the tank length. The additional problems in connection with the side wall of towing tank was considered as well. The refected waves affect on the measurement, and it causes unstediness. The authors consider the analysis process on that factor, and they proposed practical solution to extract steady component.

    本研究は,高速度・高精細画像から得られる時空間相関情報に着目し,PIV高次解析手法の開発を試みたものである.これは,相関情報を時空間領域で一括して解析することにより,相関値の連続的な変化を利用可能とし,従来よりも高精度かつ高機能な流場解析を実現する.さらに,相関値の経路積分を評価指標とすることにより,相関値の連続性を定量的に評価し,時空間の速度場を曲面として抽出する新手法を開発した.また,摂動法的に低次の項から順次求めることによって,計算効率の向上を図った.さらに,本アルゴリズムをVSJ標準画像に適用した結果,速度や渦度だけではなく流場の運動量束を場として計測可能であることを示した.

    To explore a reliable technology possibly applicable to the inactivation of micro-creatures in ship ballast water, this paper reports a result of a primary experimental and analytical study. We obtained 10 μm bubbles in averaged diameter by using a swirling flow type micro-bubble generator. We exposed a shock wave generated by a micro-explosion of a 10 mg silver azide pellet to the water containing micro-bubbles filled in a 10 mm wide parallel test section. Observations were carried out with a high-speed camera, and the corresponding rebound pressures of bubbles were measured with a fiber optic probe pressure transducer. We confirmed micro-bubble motion with higher temporal resolution and found that micro-bubble collapse arose in several hundred nano-seconds after the shock loading. The peak pressure generated by bubble collapse was over 200 MPa at the distance of 20 mm from the explosion center. These experimental results were consistent with those analyzed on the basis of the measured pressure data. The presence of such high impulsive pressures upon bubble collapse clearly indicated that the rebound pressure would be effectively applicable to the inactivation of microcreatures in ship ballast water.

  • Study on advanced education system on maritime security management

    This paper describes an attempt to develop a university education system for maritime security management. A project team, formed at the Faculty of Maritime Sciences of Kobe University, started by re-evaluating the total structure of maritime security management. The hierarchies of security management were re-ordered and used to establish the basis of the described education system. As is normal for university education, the devised system aims to produce management and leadership talent. Additionally however, the project members considered training people who actually understand what they need in the front line of security management.

    The mechanism of error vector appearance in PIV image analysis was evaluated by means of VSJ Standard Image, which enables us to obtain error vectors directly. In the present study, the relationship between the deformation and rotation parameters of particle image and error vector appearance was considered through the statistical analysis. Analyzed results shows that the sensitivity parameters for shear flow and rotation were different, and the direct cross corre-lation procedure gives different error appearance characteristics from sub-pixel analysis. Deformation of particle pattern affects the correlation map producing smaller undulation and non-symmetry distribution around correlation peak, and it would be a candidate of major error factor in PIV image procedure.

    The oil-spill patterns in Osaka Bay area were considered by using the Oil-Spill Prediction Model, which has been developed by petroleum Associate of Japan. The simulated oil-spill patterns enables us to know the each contribution of driving factors of oil spill such as tidal current, tide-induced residual current and river-water driven flow. The oil-spill patterns are mainly determined by the force balance of wind and constant component of total current. The wind forces of over 6m/s wind speed control oil-spill patterns even at the strongest-current area in Osaka Bay. When we consider the contributions of wind forces separately from constant component of total current, the wind forces may influence on oil spill patterns greatly even the wind speeds are less than 1m/s.

    Some X-ray imaging techniques are examined for a feasibility study for micro-PIV in this study. There are three X-ray imaging method, the absorption contrast method, the refraction contrast method, and the phase contrast method. The first one is a common method but its spatial resolution is rather poor. The 2nd method corresponds to the Schlieren method that utilizes refraction of parallel light. The characteristics of the method, edge enhancement, can be effective in extracting tracer images. The third method is a kind of holography methods, and this method can record fine tracer particles.
    Among the three methods, the second and the third method are seemed to be applicable to PIV imaging, and those methods need a parallel X-ray. The Spring8, the synchrotron radiation facility in Harima, is utilized. There are some methods to realize phase contrast image, most of them requires ultra-high precision in optical alignment. In the present study, though a coherent source is indispensable, the simplest and robust holography method, the inline holography, is used to take phase contrast pictures.

    Blood flow in microvessels, such as arterioles, capillaries and venules, whose diameter ranges from 5 to 50 μm, is responsible for the maintenance of tissue and organ functions. The measurement of microvascular blood flow velocity with high measurement accuracy is essential for basic and clinical studies in the assessment of flow shear stress at the vascular wall in relation to substance exchange between blood and tissue. This paper aimed to evaluate the velocity field of blood flow in microvessels with high spatial and temporal resolution. By using micro PIV system, the velocity distributions of red blood cells flowing in rat mesenteric arterioles, including near the wall in the axisymmetric plane, were obtained. Ensemble averaged time-series of velocity profiles in the cross-sections were calculated for comparison. It was shown that the arteriole velocity profile was blunt in the center region of the vessel cross-section while it was steep in the near wall region.

    Present study considers the mathematical basis of PIV analysis for multiple-time-step image, which enables to obtain the acceleration and spatial derivatives of velocity field directly from the image information. The advantage of present approach is the possibility to get the spatial derivatives at the same time of velocity and acceleration. The algorithm keeps consistency of measurement principles whole through the procedure. Total consideration of mathematical background for higher-order terms enables to derive appropriate approaches for the modification of PIV algorithms and it will contribute to achieve higher performances.

    The propulsive performance of fish-like motion was analyzed by estimating the thrust and drag forces at self-propulsive point. Numerical simulations and experiments were carried out for the analysis, and it enables us to know the hydro-dynamical propulsion performance of fish-like motion. The two-dimensional waving wing was employed for the target of basic study of propulsive performance, and the hydrodynamic forces acting on the wing were investigated.

    Propulsive performances of fish-like motion have been investigated using waving wing model. It has been said that the fish-like motion achieves high propulsive performances compared with the artificial propulsion systems such as motor and propeller. Present paper describes the analyzed results of hydrodynamic-force and flow-field measurement using waving wing model. The waving wing model was designed and made so as to analyze the basic characteristics of fish-like propulsion in two-dimensional case. The authors have proposed the definition of dynamic drag coefficient, which enables to know the resistance characteristics of waving-motion object. The basic data was collected in the simple cases, and that has been used to estimate the thrust forces under self-propulsive condition. The results of the analysis of hydrodynamic force have also been considered in connection with the flow field measured by particle image velocimetry (PIV) system.

    As endothelial cells are subject to flow shear stress. it is important to determine the detailed velocity distribution in microvessels in the study of mechanical interactions between blood and endothelium. Recently, particle image velocimetry (PIV) has been proposed as a quantitative method of measuring velocity fields instantaneously in experimental fluid mechanics. The authors have developed a highly accurate PIV technique with improved dynamic range. spatial resolution and measurement accuracy. In this paper. the proposed method was applied to images of the arteriole in the rat mesentery using an intravital microscope and high-speed digital video system. Taking the mesentery motion into account, the PIV technique was improved to measure red blood cell (RBC) velocity. Velocity distributions with spatial resolutions of 0.8 x 0.8 mum were obtained even near the wall in the centre plane of the arteriole, The arteriole velocity profile was blunt in the centre region of the vessel cross-section and sharp in the near-wall region. Typical flow features for non-Newtonian fluid were shown. Time-averaged velocity profiles in six cross sections with different diameters were compared.

    Particle image velocimetry (PIV) has been the quantitative measurement method of instantaneous velocity fields in experimental fluid mechanics. The authors have proposed the adaptive PIV technique using the gradient-based sub-pixel analysis, in which a pixel unit displacement is obtained using the iterative cross-correlation method while a sub-pixel displacement is calculated by the use of the so-called spatio-temporal derivative method. The present method can achieve high accuracy of measurement and high spatial resolution compatibly. In this paper, the proposed method is applied to visualized images of the arteriole in the rat mesentery using the intravital-microscope and the high-speed digital video system. Time-series of the velocity profiles of the arteriole is obtained. Averaged velocity profiles show the blood flow volume is constant at five vessel cross-sections. The arteriole velocity profiles are blunt at the center region of the vessel cross-section and sharp profiles at near wall region, this suggests the shear stress on the vessel wall is higher than expected one. The results show that the proposed method is very useful to measure the blood flow velocity profiles with highly accuracy of measurement, and high temporal and spatial resolution.

    An iterative PIV technique in which the combination of the iterative cross-correlation technique and three-point Gaussian peak fitting for a sub-pixel analysis has been used can improve the spatial resolution and accuracy of measurement. It is reported that the root-mean-square (RMS) error of the technique is of the order of only 0.04 pixels. However, a large interrogation window, typically 32×32 pixels or larger, should be taken, resulting in a low resolution, in order to achieve the high sub-pixel accuracy. The high accuracy is not compatible with high spatial resolution. In this paper, a new high-resolution PIV technique based on a gradient method is proposed. Initially, the pixel unit displacement is detected by the iterative method. Then, the sub-pixel displacement is evaluated by the use of the gradient method instead of the three-point Gaussian peak fitting technique. The error of the proposed technique is analytically assessed by Monte Carlo simulations. The RMS error is of the order of 0.01 pixels even with a small interrogation window, for instance 13×13 pixels or less. Thus, the method can achieve high sub-pixel accuracy and high spatial resolution compatibility.

    Particle-image velocimetry (PIV) offers lots of advantages for studying fluid mechanics. Many PIV techniques and systems have been developed. However, no standard evaluation tool for evaluating the effectiveness and accuracy of the PIV systems has been established. To popularize PIV practically, for each PN system there should be some means of evaluating the performance. PIV involves two processes, i.e. capturing the image for visualization and the image analysis. In order to evaluate the image analysis, the use of standard images has been proposed. Using these images, anybody can evaluate the effectiveness and accuracy of the PN image analysis. The standard PIV images can be grouped into three categories, i.e. standard PIV images for two-dimensional, custom-made images with tunable parameters and images for a transient flow. The standard PIV images that we have developed are distributed via the web site http://www.vsj.or.jp/piv as part of a collaboration with the Visualization Society of Japan. They can be applied to investigate the performance of any PIV technique. The standard PIV images that we have developed have already been accessed by more than 3 000 researchers around the world.

    The PIV technique is generalized from the viewpoint of the identification problem of a flow field. The process of obtaining a velocity distribution as an image measurement can be considered as a parametrization problem of a dynamical system. In almost all conventional techniques, the velocity is evaluated as the parameters in a dynamical system using a linear model without physics. These methods always give some spurious velocity vectors in the case of shear flow or vortex how, and in the region where the tracer particles are scarce. A new PIV technique based on physics is proposed. The obtained velocity field satisfies the governing equation of the fluid. It is possible that not only the velocity but also the pressure is measured, using the Navier-Stokes equations for the dynamic model. The results of jet flow, cavity flow and flow around a waving airfoil demonstrate the effectiveness of this method.

    Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) offers many advantages for studies of fluid flows. Lots of PIV techniques have been developed and applied to various flow fields. However, there are no standard tools for evaluation of the PIV system effectiveness and accuracy. To popularize the PIV for practical use, the PIV system should have some standard. The Visualization Society of Japan (VSJ) started a project for PIV standardization and popularization in 1996 (PIV-STD Project). The PIV has two processes, i.e., the image capture with visualization and image analysis. In order to evaluate the image analysis system for the PIV, standard images were proposed. Using the images, an evaluation of the effectiveness and accuracy for the PIV system will be carried out. The developed PIV standard images are distributed using the Internet, (http://www.vsj.or.jp/piv). The standard images include the two-dimensional and transient three-dimensional images. The correct velocity vectors and correct particle location in three-dimensional field are also provided to evaluate the effectiveness of the target flow field.

    Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) and Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) measurements on a self-induced sloshing flow in a rectangular tank had been conducted in the present study. The PIV measurement result was compared with LDV measurement result quantitatively in order to evaluate the accuracy level of the PIV measurement. The comparison results show that the PIV and LDV measurement results agree with each other well in general for both mean velocity and fluctuations of the velocity components. The average disagreement level of the mean velocity between PIV and LDV measurement results was found to be within 3% of the target velocity for the PIV system parameter selection. Bigger disagreements between the PIV and LDV measurement results were found to concentrate at high shear regions. The spatial resolution and temporal resolution differences of the PIV and LDV measurements and the limited frames of the PIV instantaneous results were suggested to be the main reasons for the disagreement.

    Present paper describes the principle and applications of a velocity measurement using statistical analysis of visualized flow images. The authors have developed a new algorithm for the measurement using the passing probability of a particle. It is known that this kind methods gives the total flow speed at each pixel unit. In this study, the method is extended by forming the governing equation using the Lagrange's differentiation. The process is similar to the so-called spatio-temporal derivative method. The extension of the equation enables to measure the velocity components with the help of the statistical technique. The idea is based on the fact that the temporal derivative of luminance function is proportional to the vector product of the flow velocity and the gradient of luminance function in space which gives the velocity component normal to the edge of particle image. This is easy to apply on the three-dimensional flow field.

    A new image measurement method for obtaining time-mean velocity field is proposed. The so-called time-averaged contrast is a statistical parameter of image data. Its characteristics are examined in detail with a simple mathematical model for particle images. It is found that the variance of image data gives the time-averaged contrast and the velocity of the particles in the case that the averaged intensity of the image data is constant in time. Numerical simulation shows the possibility of practical measurement.

    The paper describes a image measurement system for wave height distribution around the ship model in towing tank. The strength of light scattering of water is much different from one of air. The free surface profile is obtained as the boundary of bright and dark part in the image, which is visualized on the thin sheet light illuminated by laser. When the ship model runs across the sheet light plane, the relative position of the model changes against the light plane. The time sequential images, recorded in every particular second on the VTR, give the wave height distribution around the model.

    A new technique for wall friction measurement, non-contact and instantaneously measurement method, is developed. Oil Bow velocity on wall is measured by means of image analysis. The so-called spatio-temporal derivative method is used for evaluating very small displacement of oil. The ordinary oil flow technique for visualization of limiting streamline is employed here and is modified to measure the oil flow velocity. The present method is applied to the juncture flaw between a circular cylinder and a flat plate. The horseshoe vortex flow is examined through wall friction and limiting streamline, where it is impossible to use any probe. Because it changes the flow pattern drastically. The limiting streamline and wall friction on ship model surface are also measured.

    A new technique for wall friction measurement, non contact and instantaneous measurement, is developed. The method is a kind of the so-called image measurement using oil flow on wall and image analysis technique. Oil flow owing to wall friction is very small and also strongly depends on way of painting. The possibility of the measurement is examined in a flat plate flow.
    It is possible to measure the wall friction, if small displacement of oil can be measured. The spatio-temporal derivative method of image analysis is effective for this measurement. The ordinary oil film method for circulating water channel, based machine oil and liquid paraffin with carbon black powder, is employed here from the practical view point.
    The present method was applied to a juncture flow around a circular cylinder on the flat plate, the so-called horseshoe vortex, in which it is impossible to use any probe for wall friction measurement. The limiting streamlines on stern hull are also measured. The result is agree with the visualized one with milk painting method.

    An experiment of wave making using ferrofluid was carried out. The visualized wave pattern shows that the the angle between the wave crest line and the rail center is larger as the gradient of the magnetic field increases. It is possible to change Froude number even with same model size and also with same speed by controlling the gradient of magnetic field in ferrofluid.

    An image measurement system for wave height distribution has been developed. The system was applied to the wave measurement behind high speed craft. A number of small bubbles in water causes difference of light scattering between air and water. When a sheet laser illumination was given from the bottom of tank, the free surface is observed as the boundary of bright and dark area on the visualized image. The differential of the image data gives the position of free surface on the sheet illumination. The wave height distribution is obtained by changing the relative position of model and sheet illumination. Wave patterns around high-speed craft with several trim angles and sinkages are obtained. The wave patterns show that the undulation of free surface becomes gentle according to the decrease of sinkage in same trim angle. The difference of wave pattern with the trim angle is small in the present measurement range.

    In order to observe the limiting streamline on ship hull surface, the so-called oil film method has been applied by many people. This method always gives clear line on the body surface. In the experiment in circulating water channel, however, a number of small air bubles attached on the hull affect the limiting streamline. This causes misunderstanding of the physical phenomena.
    This paper discribes a new method for obtaining the limiting streamline on hull surface using image measurement technique, spatio-temporal method, to the oil film on the wall surface. This method also enables to measure the wall friction distribution.

    In the present study, Navier-Stokes equation is numerically solved by use of a finite difference method to obtain the 3-dimensional flow field around a prolate spheroid at small incidence. The computed flow field shows the same characteristics to that of the observation by a flow visualization technique which was reported in the author's previous report. The existence of a bubble-type separation at the rear end and the nodal point in the surface shear-stress pattern are recognised in the computed results. The 3-dimensional vorticity field is derived from the result of the computation. The vorticity structure is analysed by dissolving the vorticity vector into two components, i.e. the one is the component along the flow direction (locally streamwise vorticity) and the other component is in the locally transverse plane. The two components of the vorticity show different characteristics, i. e. the locally transverse vorticity vector shows a maximum value near the fore end and decreases in the downstream as the boundary layer grows. On the other hand, the streamwise vorticity grows in the after region and keeps its value in the wake region, although the magnitude of the streamwise vorticity is quite small compare to that of the transverse vorticity.

  • 小迎角斜航回転楕円体の表面圧力分布に関する実験的研究

    The separated flow field around prolate spheroid at small incidence is investigated experimentally. The measurement of the surface pressure distribution and the flow visualization are carried out. From the results of the flow visualization, surface stream pattern and the position of the separation line are obtained, and saddle points exist on the separation line of the side. Several flow patterns are observed near rear end by careful consideration of the flow field near symmetric plane. All of those flow patterns are consistent topologically with the flow which has saddle points on the separation line of the side. The results of the surface pressure distribution are considered with the results of the flow visualization. It is found thet the effect of longitudinal vortex component grows strong as the angle of attack increases, the flow pattern obtained from pressure distribution and the flow pattern obtained from visualization are consistent.

    In the previous report, separated flow field around prolate spheroid at incidence was investigated experimentally and numerically. Based on these results, the separated flow field around ships at incidence is investigated in the present report. In order to confirm and extend the knowledge obtained about the nature and structure of the separated flow field, the measurement of the surface pressure distribution, the measurement of velocity distribution by use of 5-hole pitot tube and the flow visualization are carried out. From experimental results, the characteristics of the separated flow and its relation to the lateral force are discussed. Vortex layer configuration and lateral force distribution are calculated numerically by considering the shedding of vortex sheet, based on a slender body approximation. The comparison between the calculated lateral force distribution and measured one shows the consideration of viscous diffusion and dissipation at the bottom of ships is necessary to obtain the agreement between them.

    The separated flow field around prolate spheroid at incidence is investigated. The characteristics of flow field are investigated experimentally by the measurement of surface pressure distribution, the measurement of velocity distribution by use of 5-hole pitot tube and the flow visualization. Based on these results, the relationship between characteristics of separated flow field and surface pressure distribution is discussed. Vortex layer configuration and surface pressure distribution are calculated numerically by considering the shedding of vortex sheet, based on a slender body approximation. The agreement between measured vorticity distribution and calculated vortex layer configuration is relatively good. The comparison between the calculated pressure distribution and the measured one shows, however, the consideration of secondary separation as well as viscous diffusion and dissipation is necessary to obtain the agreement between them.

    The authors have developed multi-dimensional PIV analysis based on the spatio-temporal correlation information. Present method enables us to obtain not only the velocity field but also the higher-order gradients of it individually. In this paper, the concept of spatio-temporal correlation information is described, and the differential approach for the correlation information analysis is proposed. The VSJ standard image was used for to consider the performance of this method, and the momentum flux of flow field was investigated. The analyzed results show the flow structure and the mechanism of flow field change clearly.

    The authors have developed an algorithm for the higher-order PIV analysis, which focuses on the correlation information defined in spatio-temporal field. In the previous paper, the authors proposed a higher-order algorithm by means of the accumulation of successive correlation maps, and it shows the advantage of multi-frame analysis. In this paper, alternative approach to the higher-order analysis using the differentiation of correlation maps is proposed. Present algorithm was developed based on the fact that the procedure obtaining the maximum point of cross correlation coefficients can be regarded as the differentials of two original distributions.

    This paper describes an image analysis by multiresolution technique, which is the same kind of the method as the so-called dyadic wavelet analysis. In the case of homogeneous images such as the tracer images by particle or mist, it is possible to obtain the characteristics of images using the histogram of gray level of high-frequency passed image data. The differentiation of the signal data with the different scale (resolution) means the analysis of spatial frequency of images. The variance of the luminance distribution has a relationship with the entropy. The fractal is not strong in these images.

    his paper deals with an application of image measurement of flow field in coastal area. It has been tried to measure the distribution of chlorophyll pigment in ocean using spectral irradiance ratio in the research field of remort sensing. When its technique can be applied to coastal zone, it would be a tracer for image measurement of the current.
    The photographs in Yura Bay, located in the southern part of Osaka Bay, are taken with several optical filters. The chlorophyll distribution is analyzed and conventional cross-correlation method is applied to measure the current. The result is compared with the path line of buoy.

    Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) offers many advantages for the study of fluid flows. The PIV has two processes, i.e., the image capture with visualization and the image analysis. In order to evaluate the image analysis system for the PIV, the Japanese PIV Standard Project (JPIV) proposed the standard images for PIV. The developed PIV standard images are distributed using the Internet, (http://www.vsj.or. jp/piv/) and CD-R. Using the PIV standard images, the sub-pixel accuracy on the PIV and PTV were evaluated. The accuracy was confirmed to be about 0.2 pixel/interval for both of PIV and PTV.

    An image measurement technique using the possibility of particle passing has been extended to obtain two-dimensional velocity field. Present paper describes the principle of the statistical analysis for the velocity field. An numerical simulation was carried out to examine the process of the present technique, and it shows that the degitalized image data may cause an error factor on the obtained velocity vector directions.

    The velocity distribution around a circular cylinder oscillated transversely in uniform flow was measured using an image measurement system. The external controllable VTR enables to obtain any image data on specified VTR frame, and automatic processing of image measurement. The conditional sampling and ensemble average are adopted to increase the spatio resolution.
    The vortex shedding process under the lock-in phenomena was considered from the measured velocity and vorticity distribution. The anti-clockwise vortex shed at 0.42π<ωat<0.54π, and has small dissipation after the shedding.

    A measurement system of wave height distribution using visualized image data has been developed. The light scattering of water and air are usually different, and the difference is obvious when small bubbles or tracer particles are in water. The position of free surface is identified as the boundary of bright and dark part of laser sheet which is given under the free surface.
    Wave height distribution around high speed craft was measured in circulating water channel. The measurement was much easier than that by conventional equipments.

    For reduction of dioxins in MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) incinerators, complete combustion by thorough mixing of combustion gas with oxygen supplied as primary and secondary air is important. So far we have realized a very low dioxins level with our unique mixing concept. However, as it is getting required to reduce dioxins concentration to further lower level, another effort had to be made to give a furnace configuration and air supply enabling better gas mixing.
    In evaluating the gas flow in a furnace, CFD (Computer Fluid Dynamics) and/or flow visualization in a miniature are generally used. However, both approaches have such problems that the former could not give a precise turbulent pattern and the latter gives only qualitative solutions. Applying PTV (Particle Tracking Velocimetry) method to flow visualization, we found mean turbulence intensity in the mixing zone useful as a quantitative mixing indicator. By employing the indicator we have determined a furnace configuration including air injection which enables much enhanced gas mixing.

    Waving wing is a basic model for the analysis of fish-like propulsion in two-dimensional case which achieved high efficiency in comparison with the ordinary artificial propulsion system. The authors have developed a waving wing model, and consider the flow field around it in the previous report. The model motion is controlled through six parallel lines, and it achieves not only the sinusoidal but also any periodical motions. In the present paper, the flow field is visualized and measured in the case of non-sinusoidal motion that simulates the impulsive starting of fishes and the swimming motion of human legs.

    This paper describes an example of image analysis by dyadic wavelet transform. Wavelet modulus maxima on transformed plane gives the Lipschitz exponent expression, which is useful to examine the characteristics of singularity of signal or the edge of an image. It is possible to reconstruct the original image only using the few maxima points. It means that the conventional image analysis would be performed on the transformed plane with maxima points. The fractal analysis is tried as an example of the approach The visualized image of oil flow on a ship model is analyzed.

    The flow around a waving wing model was visualized and measured. The waving wing model is consist of five parts connected with four joints. Every joint angle is controlled at any motion individually by means of personal computer. Furthermore, the sway and yaw motion are controlled separately around three quarter chord length, i.e., any two dimensional motion can be achieved with six channel control system.
    The flow pattern around the wing are visualized with tracer particles and laser sheet illumination. The flow around the waving wing and solid one has been compared, and they shows different vortex shedding process. The vorticity distribution has been obtained by means of image measurement system, and it shows the difference of flow pattern clearly.

    The wave height distribution around a ship model was measured by means of image measurement system using the difference of illumination scattering between air and water. The authors have developed the image measurement system of wave height distribution, and applied it on the measurement around high-speed craft and displacement type ship model in calm water. Present paper describes the extension of the present technique which enables to obtain the wave height distribution around ship model in regular wave. The measured distribution shows the change of wave pattern as the ship cross over the incident wave.

    This paper describes the results of PIV measurement of two-dimensional plane jet flow with self-induced sloshing, which are obtained by means of the so-called spatiotemporal derivative method. The research group for PIV measurement in Visualization Society in Japan has suggested this experiment for evaluating the performance of the analysis method. The results show the typical unsteady flow field owing to self-induced sloshing. PIV is a powerful tool for this experiment.

    The spatio-temporal derivative method for flow field image measurement is well known as a high spatial resolution technique. The governing equations are derived using Lagrange derivative, and assuming that the visualized particle image pattern varies smoothly almost everywhere. The authors examine the formulation of governing equation and the brightness function of the flow image in detail, and try to extend this technique to the theory with higher order approximation. The new governing equation can be applied to the case of illumination intensity is not uniform in measurement area.

    The super-heater (SH) tubes in an incinerator have been locally corroded by nonuniform partially accelerated gas flow. It effects maintenance and cost performance. In order to level the gas velocity at the super-heater entrance, putting a baffle in a boiler may be effective. The leveling effect of a baffle was studied by using a three-dimension model and employing PTV (Particle Tracking Velocimetry) analysis. After some trial and error, a baffle configuration was found to give the reduction of maximum velocity and standard deviation of the gas flow.

    The fundamental ideas on velocity measurement by means of image processing were described and the applications of those approaches were shown. A brief history of the development of PIV was described. PIV has two origins of development, i.e., the ideas based on optical method and the applications of digital image processing. The interactions of scattering lights were utilized for the detection of image displacement, and it reaches to the same destination by replacing the procedure with digital processing of image. The challenges for three-dimensional measurement were also described, and the present status of those attempts is explained. The applications of PIV measurements in the field of turbo machinery were also introduced.

     The present paper reports on the development of a new technique of marine bacteria sterilization of ship ballast water using underwater shock waves. The interactions between microbubbles and shock waves are utilized in the proposed technique. The contraction and expansion motion of microbubbles provide biochemical and mechanical sterilization effects by means of free radicals and shock wave pressures. Theoretical and experimental approaches to the development of the present technique are described. The examination of optimum conditions for higher rebound-pressure generation from microbubbles, the observation and pressure measurements in the interaction field between microbubbles and shock waves, the performance of a unique shock wave generator and the bio-experiments with the present technique are featured in this paper.

    This paper reports the experimental study on behavior and collapse of micro-nano bubbles to develop a new ballast water treatment technology. The experimental flow system is composed of flow channels, a cooler tank, a pump, a micro-nano bubble generator, and an ultrasonic wave generator. The inactivation effect of marine bacteria of this system is checked by the colony counting method. The effect is related with the collapse of micro-nano bubbles by ultrasonic waves. The schlieren method is carried out to observe the collapse phenomena of micro-nano bubbles in the flow channel. As a result, shock waves are observed around bubbles, and it is found that the collapse of bubbles contribute to the inactivation of the marine bacteria.

    A novel technique using particle image velocimetry (PIV) was developed to evaluate the detailed velocity profiles of red cells flowing in microvessels. Based on the digital high-speed video-microscopic images, detailed velocity profiles at branching and confluence arterioles were analyzed with 0.8μm in the spatial resolution and 1 msec in the time interval. At the branching arteriole, the centerline velocity of proximal vessel was decreased markedly near the apex, and the cross-sectional red cell velocity profile showed double peaks. However at a distal of confluence, the centerline velocity was not observed the incensement and the double peaks profile, as symmetric to the branching. These red cell flow profiles suggests that the shear-stress acting to the endothelium were much affected by the microvascular geometries.

    The flow field around a waving wing is visualized and measured, and the relationship between the flow pattern and the wing motion is considered. The motion of waving wing consists of the parameters such as frequency, amplitude, phase delay and the wave shape of periodical motion. The fish-like propulsion achieves the high efficiency by combining the optimized combination of the parameters. In the previous report, the flow fields under several typical motions are measured by PIV systems. Present paper describes the new algorithm of PIV for the high-resolution measurement, and the system is applied on the series test of wing motion. The new system enables to analyze the detail of the flow field and the change of the flow pattern for the increase of phase speed of wing motion is considered.

    In the previous reports, the new image measurement technique using governing equation of fluid flow has been proposed. Numerical simulation and experiments have been made for the investigation of this technique. In this paper, the process of obtaining velocity distribution by.PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) is discussed in the terms of the identification problem in dynamic system. It is found that the velocity is evaluated as a parameter of the model. This means that it is possible to obtain not only the velocity but also the pressure distribution. The proposed method is applied to the PIV standard image and cavity flow image. The results show that the present method is fairly effective.

    In this paper, a new method of image measurement for flow field is proposed, using not only constraint of the image but also governing equation of fluid flow itself. The solution of this problem, one of the optimization, is obtained by GA (Genetic Algorithm). The numerical simulation of a simple shear flow shows fairly good result.

  • (3) 多関節翼を用いた魚類型推進に関する研究

    多関節翼模型を用いて,体躯屈曲により推力を発生する魚類型推進に関する研究を行った。2次元ではあるが魚類型推進を忠実に再現し,基礎的な推進特性の検討を可能とする多関節翼模型を設計・製作した。これを用いて,流れの可視化,流体力計測,PIVによる流揚計測の結果から,遊泳運動の違いによる抵抗特性の推定と,これを用いた自航状態における発生推力の推定法の提案を行った。その結果,泳動運動の位相速度の違いによる推力発生量の違いと,自航速度の変化についての基礎データを得ることができた。[figure]
