    AbstractA correct assessment of the ship speed loss in conditions of operation is becoming increasingly important for ship owners as well as ship designers. We are witnessing increasing concern for the environment and awareness of the necessity to preserve it as much as we could. The ship speed drop in the real environmental conditions can cause increased fuel consumption as well as increased emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) from ships. Decrease in the ship speed in real conditions is a consequence of the added resistance due to the impact of weather conditions and due to aggravated propeller working conditions. Moreover, the solution estimation of this problem is very much affected by human factors. Ship master, concerning for safety, can make a judgment that under certain adverse weather loads, it is necessary to slowdown or change ship's course to moderate or bypass the worst condition. In addition, the loading condition of the ship is constantly changing, which governs the basic parameters of the ship: the mass and mass moment of inertia, draft and trim and, consequently, the ship behavior at sea. All these parameters affect the assessment of ship speed, and it is necessary to be conscious of the intensity of their impact on the final value. At the same time, they cannot be predicted with absolute certainty, so the purpose of this analysis is to estimate the impact of weather and operational uncertainties on the actual speed of the ship in real operating conditions.

    Various operations at sea, such as maintaining a constant ship position and direction, require a complex control system. Under such conditions, the ship needs an efficient positioning technique. Dynamic positioning (DP) systems provide such an application with a combination of the actuators mechanism, analyses of crucial ship variables, and environmental conditions. The natural forces of induced nonlinear waves acting on a ship’s hull interfere with the systems. To generate control signals for actuators accurately, sensor measurements should be filtered and processed. Furthermore, for safe and green routing, the forces and moments acting on the ship’s hull should be taken into account in terms of their prediction. Thus, the design of such systems takes into account the problem of obtaining data about the directional wave spectra (DWS). Sensor systems individually cannot provide high accuracy and reliability, so their measurements need to be combined and complemented. Techniques based on the recursive Kalman filter (KF) are used for this purpose. When some measurements are unavailable, the estimation procedure should predict them and, based on the comparison of theoretical and measured states, reduce the error variance of the analyzed signals. Different approaches for improving estimation algorithms have evolved over the years with the indication of improvement. This paper gives an overview of the state-of-the-art estimation and filtering techniques for providing optimum estimation states in DP systems.

    Copyright © 2019 ASME. The amount of maritime cargo has been increasing for several decades. However, most seafarers have been shifting from lifetime employment to temporary employment. This may result in the ships lacking the adept techniques of seafarers, which significantly increases the reliance and importance of operational support systems. There are many studies on optimal ship routing, but its accuracy has not been discussed sufficiently. Especially, the grid point value on the weather database is the most important factor to discuss regarding its accuracy. In the field of meteorology, these databases have been improved to include global data in recent decades. In this study, the simulation results are compared to know the influence to the accuracy if the spatial and time resolutions vary in each condition. Optimal ship routing is computed using the isochrone method, which is one of the major methods of route analysis. Numerical simulations are conducted for a container ship between Tokyo and Los Angeles, with the weather databases of National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It is known that there are no significant differences between each resolution setting. However, the optimal voyage routes are different if the ship avoids high waves or strong winds in any direction. The accuracy is more influenced by the maneuverability in rough seas than the spatial and time resolutions of the weather databases. Accordingly, optimal ship routing must consider the actual maneuvering and speed loss theories, besides the development of a meteorological database.

    In this study, three cases of rough-sea navigation in the Southern Hemisphere were reproduced using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's WAVEWATCH III. Different wind inputs with various spatial and temporal resolutions were considered, originating from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction Final (NCEP-FNL) Operation Model Global Tropospheric Analyses, the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasts Interim Reanalysis (ERA-Interim), and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The simulated waves (wave hindcasts) were validated using measured onboard ship motion data. Comparisons of measured and simulated pitch motion indicated that each of the different wind inputs produced reasonable first-order estimates of rough waves. However, for application to a ship's weather routing systems, wind input selection should be carefully considered. For example, near-surface winds from the ERA-Interim underestimated rough waves, while those from the NCEP-FNL Analyses had a contrary tendency, hi addition, although the wind inputs from the ERA-Interim produced wave hindcasts that is more consistent with measured results, these same inputs generally underestimated the increasing-phase pitch motion under severe weather conditions, which poses a danger for ships. Thus, the use of wind inputs from NCEP-ENL Analyses or higher-resolution WRF model is recommended for application to ship weather routing systems.

    Maritime transportation is becoming increasingly complex owing to the fluctuation of oil prices, the introduction of environmental guidelines, and the onset of climate change. Although optimal routing has been researched for decades, few studies have investigated speed loss in rough waves for ships with blunt shape and low speed. Onboard measurement of a 28,000DWT bulk carrier has been conducted for six years in rough sea voyages in the Southern Hemisphere. It is necessary to validate the wave and wind conditions in order to discuss speed loss in these situations. Here, numerical simulation of speed loss is developed and conducted for each estimated wave condition. The speed losses under different numerical models of added resistance are quantitatively compared in two rough sea voyages. The simulated results of speed loss are in good agreement with the measured results if the estimated wave is accurate and the wave direction is properly defined. The speed loss accuracy is significantly influenced by the wave estimation accuracy or wave direction setting compared to that in the numerical models of added resistance in actual seas. Simulated results provide important information to evaluate the performance of a ship with blunt shape in rough waves.

  • OPTIMAL ROUTING OF SHORT-DISTANCE FERRY FROM THE EVALUATION OF MOORING CRITERIA

    In optimal ship routing, the ship behavior in the ocean is the main concern. However, there is also different type of ship service, namely the short-distance ferry. It is evident that a novel optimal ship routing must be proposed. A ferry service in southern Japan is the focus of this study. This service takes into account the typhoons or atmospheric depressions that influence the ferry ports. The ferry service is sometimes suspended because of the considerable motion of the ships moored in harbors. A wave monitoring system has been operational since 2015; however, the methodology has not been established from the viewpoint of optimal operation. The current situation regarding the ferry service is summarized in detail in this study, and patterns of typhoons and atmospheric depressions are revealed. In particular, it is difficult for ferry users to understand the reason for suspension of the ferry service when typhoons pass several hundred kilometers away with offshore wave heights of less than 2 m. Firstly, the relation between long period waves and the actual operation is clarified. Secondly, moored ship motions are numerically simulated using measured wave data to evaluate mooring criteria. The estimation formula of the mooring criteria is modeled, and the novel concept of optimal routing for the short-distance ferry is proposed.

    Darrieus type vertical axis water turbine in a cylindrical shape which consists of some straight blades is simple, efficient and easy to install a generator upward. However, it has difficulty in starting revolution. As a method to cope with such a problem, a starting revolution assist mechanism was fabricated and set on a prototype of the turbine. Assist experiment was carried out. It resulted helping well the starting revolution. The improved prototype of tidal stream turbine can generate 1.4 W under a water flow of 1 m/s where impossible to self-start. Besides that, Darrieus water turbine's generating torque property was investigated by the famous original experimental data of lift coefficient Cl and drag coefficient Cd for straight blades of NACA63 3-018 cross section. It was found that setting two or four blades in a turbine would help to improve the difficulty of starting revolution.

    Currently, for marine transportation, various factors have to be taken account of. Hence, it is necessary to understand the ship performance, especially under heavy sea conditions. In this study, measurement results for a 20,000 DWT class bulk carrier were analyzed, and eight events of remarkable speed loss in heavy seas were observed during the measurement period 20 months from July 2010. The variations in ship performance parameters were statistically analyzed, and a regression analysis was carried out. All cases of remarkable speed loss occurred in seas relatively close to lands (within 200 nautical miles). The magnitude of speed loss was larger in the Southern Hemisphere than in the Northern Hemisphere. This indicates that more accurate weather routing is necessary for the Southern Hemisphere, especially for evaluating ship performance from the viewpoint of intrinsic weather patterns.

    日本は沿岸波浪の情報は充実してきているが,沿岸から離れた海域は未だにデータが少なく,船舶が危険な状況に陥る要因となっている.本研究では国際航海に従事する貨物船を対象に太平洋上の荒天航海時における波浪情報をレーダー式波浪計にて計測し,これをWRFおよびSWANといった気象海象モデルにて再現・比較した.このときに同時観測した横揺れ,縦揺れなど船体運動の実測値と波浪データからEUTにより推定した値の比較を行った.レーダー式波浪計による計測値をもとに船体運動を推定した場合,若干ほぼ実用的に推定でき,一方数値モデルによる波浪追算は波向および周波数特性を精度よく再現できるが,波高はやや過小評価となることが明らかとなった.この点については船舶からの観測データをネットワーク通信により蓄積し,数値モデルの補正精度を向上させることで波浪情報の充実を図れる.

  • ANNALYSIS OF SEA SHOCK ENCOUNTERED BY A SHIP IN NORTH EAST JAPAN

    In general, earthquake motion experienced by a navigable vessel is called a sea shock (or seaquake). Sea shock is assumed that the vertical ground motion of the sea floor propagates as a compressional (longitudinal) wave in water. Seaquakes are sudden, unexpected phenomena that are induced by undersea earthquakes. There are almost no examples of their systematic measurement and the phenomenon of seaquakes is said to not be thoroughly understood. The effect of seaquakes was studied theoretically during the 1990s, during research on the wave response of structures for the construction of VLFS. However, There are a few experimental studies on the effect of seaquakes on floating bodies because of the problem of reproducibility. We measured ship motion caused by sea shocks by examining seabed oscillation. Such measurements provided very valuable data. The conclusions obtained in the present study are that ship motion caused by sea shocks has high-frequency oscillation. In particular, the acceleration in the z direction is remarkable.

    Today, weather routing becomes more important under the current situation of international maritime transportation. However, the authors reveal that the current systems are not necessarily sufficiently reliable. It is also worthwhile to consider the background of the difficulty in numerically forecasting winds and waves. Here, two failed cases of wave forecasts are verified using WRF and SWAN, two numerical meso-meteorology models. In both failed cases, low pressures developed from the southern sea area of Japan with a northeast direction. First, wind direction can be reproduced correctly, even if the resolution of the simulation is changed. Second, if the resolution is insufficient, wind speed will be underestimated as smaller than the observed values. At the same time, wave height tends to be underestimated as compared to observed values, too. This is the feasibility study for improving the forecasting of wave growth pattern due to developing low pressures from the viewpoint of safe ship operation.

    Sea states, such as waves, tidal currents, and wind are important factors for safe and economic ship navigation. In previous papers of Xia et al. (2006a, 2006b) single factor generated by low pressure was studied independently. The objective of this paper is to study how ship navigation is affected by the combined effects of these factors. For clarification, simulations of two representative typhoons were conducted, and the results were compared. Numerical simulations of tidal currents, waves, and wind were applied to provide high-resolution information, which was then used to simulate ship navigation. Estimation of ship position was found effectively by comparing the results from these two cases and using the proposed numerical navigation simulation method. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd.   • Application of Numerical Ship Navigation in a Coastal Area

    Waves, ocean currents, and sea surface winds are important factors for safe and economic ship navigation, especially in coastal areas where ship density is relatively higher and the topography is more complicated. In this research, Osaka Bay, Japan, was selected as a location to conduct a representative, low-pressure numerical ship navigation. WRF, SWAN, and POM models were used to produce numerical simulations of wind, waves, and currents, respectively. The high-resolution weather and ocean information was then used to conduct a numerical ship navigation. To verify the accuracy, the results simulating the weather and ocean were compared with actual observation data. The findings showed that the estimation of a ship's position using the proposed numerical navigation simulation method was effective in helping a ship navigate safely and economically.

    Numerical forecasts of weather and oceanography are increasingly common in the field of ship operations due to advances in computer science. However, in some situations, the accuracy of forecasts is too unreliable to ensure safe operations. In the current study, a nationwide questionnaire is used to determine the effectiveness of wave forecasts in enhancing navigation safety. Data analysis is also shown for two cases of failed forecasts in low-pressure weather systems near Japan in the winter. Finally, recommendations are made for improving wave forecasts from the viewpoint of ship operations.

    It is essential to maintain the safety of ships that are anchored in offshore harbors to avoid the influence of storms. Recently, marine casualties have been reported on anchored ships stranded in coastal areas after their anchors dragged in stormy weather. However, there have been very few studies on anchored ship motions in waves with dynamic mooring forces. In this study, information on the safety of ships in offshore harbors during storms was gathered through a nationwide questionnaire. Because previous numerical models for reproducing reported situations of marine casualties appear flawed, this study considers the dynamic calculation of chain forces and compares the results with those obtained by the catenary method. A new algorithm is constructed to reproduce the dragging anchor and grounding in waves and winds. This study is expected to contribute to the improvement of port planning related to anchorage.   • A Study of Numerical Simulations of Ship Motions While Underway Using a Coastal Wave Database

    The safety of maritime transportation should be ensured. However, the methods currently used to determine whether or not to cancel ship services are insufficient. A numerical simulation of ship motions was constructed using the coastal network wave database, NOWPHAS. A domestic ferry service, which navigates the Pacific Ocean, is set as the object of this study. Field observations of ship motions were implemented when typhoons approached Japan. The accuracy of ship motions obtained using 2 types of simulation methods is verified. Finally, this study reveals the factor that controls the accuracy of ship motions.

    The influence of tidal currents is a very important factor in port planning. The normal orientation of harbor facilities is usually designed to be parallel with the main direction of tidal currents to accommodate larger-sized vessels. However, there are still many ports that do not necessarily satisfy this fundamental rule, especially in small ferry berths. This study describes the present situation of Japanese ports under strong tidal currents. First, meteorological and oceanographic parameters have been observed to understand the properties of seawater and tidal currents. This observation revealed the existence of a complicated water density environment with strong tidal currents around OK Island in Japan. To evaluate a difficulty of ferry berthing, it is essential to take ship motion into consideration. This new numerical simulator makes it possible to reproduce motions of a berthing ship in tidal currents and winds while applying maneuvering forces. With this system, ship motions can be accurately reproduced, which makes it possible to quantify berthing criteria. The analytical methods presented here could be used for the planning of ports with strong tidal currents.

    The working ratio of ports when the influence of waves is remarkable has been discussed in detail; however, the ratio of those not facing open sea areas has not been considered. The current port operations are clarified through a questionnaire. Because tidal currents are the main complicating factor in ferry operations, the difficulty of ferry berthing is estimated through revised numerical simulations. The working ratio due to tidal currents is newly defined to compare it with that due to waves. In a ferry terminal of the Seto Inland Sea, the working ratio due to tidal currents is lower than the standard for harbor tranquility. New port planning is required for small ferry terminals with strong tidal currents.

    It is important to study the safety of "the refugee of harbour" from the viewpoint of port planning. Recently, accidents of stranded vessels which resulted in breaking of the ship hull become very serious in the port operation and the coastal environment. However, these problems have not even been discussed among the coastal engineering and shipbuilding communities. In this study, we summarize the importance of this point by showing the statistic of casualties. Then, the strength of ship hulls is calculated using the strip theory and the basic dynamics of material, when ships are designed to navigate in the ocean. Since the results of calculations cannot explain the reasons for the incidents which resulted in breaking of the ship hull, the possbility of the high stress levels due to cracks is also considered to explain the reasons for these casulties. The results of the predictions can explain that the breaking of the stranded ship hulls may be caused by the high stresses due to cracks on the ship hull. Therefore, in the future the safety of coastal areas outside harbours should be considered by predicting the motions of anchored ship s and the fracture mechanics of the ship hull in detail.

    In this study, from the viewpoint of ship safety and cargo management, examination of a criterion of judgment of ferry cancellation is carried out, based on both observed ship motion when encountering a typhoon and on coastal wave data at that time. Ship motion was observed using a 5,000GT-type ferryboat. As the wave data, coastal waves that were recorded with Nationwide Ocean Wave information network for Ports and HArbourS (NOWPHAS) instead of the encounter waves that are very difficult to measure are used. These data are analyzed by Spectral Analysis based on Auto Regressive (AR) modeling procedure, and the characteristics are analyzed in detail. Moreover, numerical reproductions of ship motion based on observed coastal waves are performed, and some future problems with respect to the decision on the criterion of judging of ferry cancellation are considered.

  • An analytic study on weather parameters related to restricted visibility due to heavy fog at Geiyo district in Seto Inland Sea

    It is very important for ship operators to maintain sufficient visibility for navigation. However, heavy fog sometimes results in the cancellation of navigation or marine accidents. Although this is one of the most serious problems, detailed studies of weather conditions that cause such problems have not been conducted The focus of this study is on the restricted visibility within the Geiyo district of the Seto Inland Sea. A new observation system to measure the air and water temperature, humidity, air pressure, and tide level has been developed. The variation of these parameters is researched in detail when the visibility deteriorates. Relational analysis among these parameters is also conducted. Finally, new findings about the appearance of heavy fog resulting from the analysis of the data are reported.

  • A study of difficulties of entering and departing harbours due to wave-induced ship motions

    It is very important to maintain safety when ships enter or depart harbours. In this study, ship motions are at first successfully observed in swells. It is shown that difficulties occur during berthing operations inside harbours as well as during entrances. Observed data are analyzed to learn these difficulties numerically. Numerical simulations of ship motions in swells during harbour entrance and departure are newly constructed at first. Their accuracy seems to be enough to compare to some cases of observed ship motions. Further, it is necessary to define the new evaluation parameters regarding the difficulty of the berthing operation; this is proposed and verified as the Difficulty of Berthing Function. The function can evaluate the operational difficulty quantitatively; this point should be considered part of harbour tranquility.

  • Basic research on operational troubles for ships and harbours due to abnormal water levels

    It is very important to know the ebbs and flows of tides from the viewpoint of ship operations. However, abnormal water levels are being widely observed. These conditions cause various challenges among waterfront facilities. In this study, the present situations and challenges to ship operations in abnormal water levels due to tides are researched. A nationwide questionnaire was conducted to learn from operators of ships and harbours. The results of the questionnaire indicated that there are many difficulties related to operations as ships are berthing, maneuvering in shallow waters, and loading and unloading passengers and cargo. However, there are no effective measures with which to counter these difficulties. These problems are particularly serious for water-buses that navigate the rivers. In this study, the current problems are statistically analyzed based upon comments received from operators.

    台風や低気圧などの荒天を避けるため, 港外避泊していた船舶が走錨・座礁する海難が連続して発生し, 乗組員の人命や船体および貨物の損傷, 油流出による環境汚染が深刻な問題となっている. 本研究では座礁海難の状況を調査し, これまでの研究で未検討の波浪影響に注目した. この結果, 海難時には波浪も顕著な発達が見られ, アンケート調査によっても現状の港外避泊に対する検討の不十分さが様々な側面から明らかとなった. 風および波浪影響を正確に考慮できる錨泊船の船体運動に関する数値シミュレーションを構築し, 外力影響を検証した. この結果, 風と波浪が同時に作用する状況下ではじめて走錨・座礁となる様子が再現できる.

    Mooring problems are still serious issues in port construction and operation. Although many studies have been carried out about moored ship motions or waves, effective countermeasures to reduce ship motions have not been accomplished in most harbours facing open seas. It is known that operators require detailed wave information near harbours when sea conditions become severe. In this study, a new numerical model is constructed for the prediction of the mooring limit condition due to typhoons. It is based on the theories of Kalman Filter, wave growth inside typhoons and wave decay in swells. The prediction model needs less input data than the meteorological models. The accuracy of the predicted model is verified for a port facing the Pacific Ocean when swells or wind waves propagate from typhoons in various situations. The prediction model is applied to other locations facing the Pacific Ocean. This new model allows us to predict the mooring limit condition 0.5-2 days before the influence of typhoons. Moreover, we propose a berth operation system to monitor the mooring limit condition using this prediction model in harbours facing open seas.

    外洋性港湾に船舶が入出港するときの安全性について, 前報では大型フェリーが着離岸するときにRollによって作業困難となる状況を定量化した. 本研究では, 港外から港内に至る入出港の全局面で発生する船体動揺を連続的に再現できる数値解析手法の構築を行った結果, 沖合観測波形, 港湾・船型データ, 操船データをもとに着離岸局面を含めた入出港時の船体動揺を実用上十分な精度で再現できることを検証した. さらに着離岸時の作業困難度を定量的に評価できる「着離岸困難度関数」を新たに定義しその有効性を検討した. さらに海域, 港湾, 船型が異なるケースにおいても船体動揺の現地観測を実施し, 入出港の困難さを支配する諸要因について考察した.

  • Basic research on the safety management of a ferry cargo in rough weather

    Recently the domestic cargo transportation has to consider "modal shift" politics because of problems of road congestion and environmental issue, etc. We conducted a nation-wide questionnaire to grasp what kinds of measures are taken at the field for the safety of a cargo transportation under rough weather. Then, obtained answers of the questionnaire were classified in each sea area, and they were analyzed in detail. The obtained results for questionnaire are summarized as follows: (1) The number of days or the season of an operational cancellation is different in each sea area. (2) The most serious problem is a cargo motion due to the roll motion in swells. (3) More than 60% of shipping companies require some effective cargo safety systems for the cargo motion when ships navigate in open seas.

  • Basic research on the relationship between wave growth and atmospheric depressions from the viewpoint of ship operations

    Although there are many harbours along the Pacific coast of northern Japan, ship operations are often impossible from winter to spring. Developed atmospheric depressions propagate swells in northern Japan. In this study, various data of waves and weather conditions are analyzed when ship operations are difficult in harbours facing the Pacific Ocean. The wave heights or growing points are quite different at various points. Detailed studies of the relationships between waves and atmospheric depressions show that moving patterns of atmospheric depressions can be divided into three patterns. Furthermore, some trends determining wave growth are obvious due to atmospheric depressions.

    Safety is very important as ships enter and depart from harbours. Ship motions were successfully observed in swells in a previous study, and difficulties were shown to occur during the berthing operation inside the harbour as well as at the harbour entrance. In this study, numerical simulations of ship motions in swells during entrance and departure are recreated for the first time. The accuracy was sufficient for modeling observed ship motions." Moreover, it will be necessary to define the evaluation parameters of the berthing operation. It is constructed and as the "Difficulty of Berthing Function" for ships. The function can be used to quantitatively evaluate the operational difficulty, which should be considered when evaluating harbour tranquility.

  • New evaluation method of port planning and ship operation from viewpoint of ship motions using new observation system

    In recent years, the maritime transportation world has changed a great deal. Maritime transportation tends itself well to environmental protection. On the other hand, transportation requires speed more than ever, and although ship motions in oceans or in harbours have already been studied, it is necessary to evaluate these ship motions in their totality. Also, ship motions are the important factor when evaluating the difficulty of ship handling when ships enter or depart harbours. This study discusses a new type of measurement unit of ship motions. Ship motions are observed for two ships in various sea areas or situations. Then, some relations between observed ship motions and port operation are evaluated with the new simulation method for harbours.

  • Wave forecast at harbor entrance to support entering ships under rough weather

    It is known that the ship's entering is limited at Japanese coastal harbors under severe wave conditions. This limit condition becomes difficult to maintain the on-schedule service and safety of the maritime transportation. In this paper, authors review the method of wave forecast at the turning point of the ship near harbor entrance. In other words, we study to establish a supporting system for ships to enter the harbors so that the fishermen can pass the dangerous point of operation under rough weather conditions at small wave grouping.

    It is important in berth planning and port operation to be accurately familiar with moored ship motions correctly in especially long period component, especially at ports facing the open sea. The phenomenon of moored ship oscillations has been studied for decades by model experiments, field observations and numerical simulations. This paper shows the comparison of numerical simulation result and field observations to discuss how we get more accurate result by the numerical simulations on ship motions. Major unknown factors for surging in the numerical simulations are the condition of mooring ropes and damping factor. Then, we discuss on the effect of the characteristics of mooring system and surge damping factor.

    Mooring troubles due to moored ship motions in a harbour facing the open sea are very serious problem from the point of view of the port operation. Some studies about a wave prediction are carried out, however, the accuracy of the prediction isn't still enough exact, especially in case of a rapid wave growth at stormy weathers. In this study, we focus on a harbour facing the Pacific Ocean, and research on mooring troubles which are happened in 1997-1998. Furthermore, observed wave data by NOWPHAS system and typhoon data are analyzed. Thus, we consider the relations among mooring troubles, observed wave conditions, and typhoons from the point of view of the mooring criteria.

  • A study on numerical simulation methods to reproduce long-period ship motions

    It is important in berth planning and operation to be accurately familiar with moored ship motions correctly, especially at ports facing the open sea. The phenomenon of moored ship motions has been researched for decades by experiments or numerical simulations, and several numerical simulation methods have been proposed to evaluate ship motions and mooring forces. However, there are few studies that compare these simulation models with respect to time domain analysis, especially in long-period motions. In this study, moored ship motions are analyzed with the use of several examples corresponding to several simulation methods, and the simulation results are compared with each other. Firstly, hydrodynamic forces are calculated and compared among numerical simulation methods such as three- and two-dimensional ones. Finally, moored ship motions in the time domain are solved by two kinds of models.

    Suspensions of cargo handling or the mooring accidents due to large moored ship motions happen in some ports in spite of small wave heights. Though some studies about cargo handling criteria influenced by moored ship motions have been done in recent decades, there are few studies about ship mooring criteria including emergency evacuation of a ship to outside harbor. In this paper, firstly, we research about the general flow chart systematically when suspensions of cargo handling or mooring accidents happen. Secondly me focus on a Japanese harbor facing to Pacific Ocean, and analyze some actual mooring accidents using the accident reports, wave and mind data, and then me verify the accident by numerical simulation method.

  • Basic research on advanced safety for offshore sea berth in open sea and berth operation support system

    The suspension of cargo handling caused by moored ship motions is one of the most serious problem at sea berths facing to open sea area. In this paper, we focus on a tanker sea berth facing to the Pacific Ocean. Firstly we research about the berth operation of the sea berth. Secondly, we observe and analyze the wind waves and the swell at the sea berth. Next, we simulate moored ship motions under these waves and winds, then we compare the hearing results from the berth master with the simulation results. Finally, we propose a berth operation support system for a safe berth operation.

    Recently long period waves and sudden growing waves cause breakage of mooring ropes and over compression of fenders and damage moored ships. In this paper we study on determining the judgement of survival mooring conditions for a specific port by using the wave statistics in ports and harbors and weather data. The obtained results are summarized as follows : (1) By using the existing wave statistics, the useful characteristics for judgement of survival mooring conditions for the port is obtained. (2) The wave height is the most important for the judgement of survival conditions. So we define new parameters as a maximum wave height and a growth rate of wave height in order to clarify the relation between wave heights and atmospheric pressures. (3) Studying the correlations between above new parameters, the characteristics of wind and moving low pressures, we can obtain available informations for judgement of survival mooring conditions. (4) Since there exists the time difference between the neighboring harbors when the maximum wave heights happen, it is useful to exchange the wave height informations to judge the mooring conditions.

    A lot of studies about mooring ship motions have done in recent decades, but they are focused on cargo handling criteria. At some ports in open sea, mooring ships move so hard and sometimes mooring lines or fenders are broken. So, when we think about mooring criteria, we have to consider a lot of parameters. In this paper, we study about these parameters and we pick up some cases of mooring accidents at the harbor face to Pacific Ocean. And we find out the results as follows : (1) We can't argue about the mooring criteria correctly if we focus only on ship motions. (2) We can clear up the relation between cargo handling criteria and the mooring criteria. (3) Mooring accidents tend to take place in winter season than other seasons in these cases. (4) In most of those accident cases, mooring ships should shift to offshore earlier stage. (5) The required time length when ships shift to offshore depends on the ship type, the cargo handling way, etc. (6) The difficulty of wave prediction makes so hard to make out mooring criteria. (7) We have to consider long period wave in case of considering the mooring criteria. (8) There are trade off relations between the safety of mooring ship and the berth efficiency. (9) It is necessary to grasp the effect of moored ship motions by wave and wind correctly, if we want to avoid mooring accidents.

    In some ports facing to open sea, moored ships sometimes move so hard that cargo handling or mooring becomes difficult, and the mooring lines or fenders have broken in serious case. Then we focus on the wave and wind conditions of inside and outside of a port facing to Sea of Japan where moored ships move hard in winter and find the existence of the "long period wave". One year wave data of inside and outside of other port facing to East China Sea are observed and the spectrum analysis of them is done, and we ensure the existence of long period wave exist and its energy increases inside of the port. Firstly, we simulate the phenomenon of moored 60, 000 DWT bulk ship motions using wave data included "long period wave". Secondly, we change mooring methods and simulate the ship motion at the same condition, and then compare the ship motions, mooring line tensions and fender reaction forces. As the result, we consider the effect of the better mooring methods in ports facing to open sea in case of stormy weather.

    Abstract Condensation inside marine containers occurs during voyages owing to weather changes. In this study, we define the condensation probability along one of the major routes for container ships between Asia and Europe. First, the inside and outside air conditions were measured on land in Japan, and a correlation analysis was conducted to derive their relationship. Second, onboard measurements were conducted for 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) ships to determine the variation in outside air conditions. Complicated patterns of weather change were observed with changes in latitude, sea area, and season. Third, condensation probability was estimated based on a multi-regression analysis with land and onboard measured data. The maximum condensation probability in westbound or eastbound voyages in winter was found to be approximately 50%. The condensation probability estimation method established in this study can contribute to the quantification of cargo damage risks for the planning of marine container transportation voyages.

  • 潮流と風が卓越する海域における海洋実習の安全性評価について

    When any teaching staffs have to be in charge of the subject they've never experienced,elaborate preparation will be required until the new semester starts. However,it is difficult to obtain these kinds of information in sea training under local weather conditions. In this paper,the author considers an improvement of the cutter training through his teaching experience in college.Firstly,descriptions and requirements of the training are summarized to implement lessons every week.It is famous that tidal current's speed is very fast near the training sea area.Then,weather and oceanographic database is analyzed from April to October.This reveals that wind speeds sometimes rapidly increased in spring seasons,so it is more difficult to predict.Tide levels have been observed for 3 months to simulate spatial distribution of tidal currents around the training sea.Numerical simulations of tidal currents are implemented to verify the spatial distribution of them.Finally,the information system of safety judge is considered to operate the sea training as the new education tool.
