    Abstract The radioactive noble gas radon-222 ($\mathrm{^{222}Rn}$) produced in the uranium series is a crucial background source in many underground experiments. We have estimated the adsorption property of Rn with activated carbon fibers (ACFs) in air, argon, and xenon gas. We evaluated six ACFs, named A-7, A-10, A-15, A-20, A-25, and S-25, provided by Unitika Ltd. We measured the intrinsic radioactivity of these ACF samples, and found A-20’s radioactivity of the uranium series to be $<5.5$  $\mathrm{mBq/kg}$ with $90\%$ confidence level. In air and Ar gas, we found that ACF A-15 has an adsorption efficiency of $1/10000$ reduction at maximum before saturation of Rn adsorption, and more than $97\%$ adsorption efficiency after the saturation. In Xe gas, we found that ACF A-20 has the best Rn adsorption ability among the tested ACFs. We also found that S-25, A-25, and A-15 have similar Rn adsorption performance.

    © 2020 authors. A search for proton decay into three charged leptons has been performed by using 0.37 Mton·years of data collected in Super-Kamiokande. All possible combinations of electrons, muons, and their antiparticles consistent with charge conservation were considered as decay modes. No significant excess of events has been found over the background, and lower limits on the proton lifetime divided by the branching ratio have been obtained. The limits range between 9.2×1033 and 3.4×1034 years at 90% confidence level, improving by more than an order of magnitude upon limits from previous experiments. A first limit has been set for the p→μ-e+e+ mode.

    Needless to say, it is important to select ultra-low background materials for dark matter and 0νββ detectors. All materials and components must be evaluated before the detector construction. This presentation will focus on developing a database for such purpose based on the open source database, Persephone (radiopurity.org). The aim of this project is to share information on low-radioactivity materials measured by several techniques in Kamioka observatory among Japanese community. Improvements of the functions of the database and the typical contents will be shown. In addition, several running programs for screening low-radioactive materials at Kamioka will be discussed.

  • Yuuki Nakano

    Super-Kamiokande (SK), a 50 kton water Cherenkov detector in Japan, observes 8B solar neutrinos with neutrino-electron elastic scattering. SK searches for distortions of the solar neutrino energy spectrum caused by the edge of the MSW resonance in the core of the Sun. The installation of new front-end electronics in 2008 marks the beginning of the 4th phase of SK (SK-IV). With the improvement of the water circulation system, calibration methods, reduction cuts, this phase achieved the lowest energy threshold thus far (3.5 MeV kinetic energy). To improve the sensitivity to the MSW effect, it is required to achieve lower energy threshold. For this purpose, understanding the origin of background events and reducing them are important. Currently, the main background is known as a beta decay of 214Bi in a Radon decay chain. So far, SK collaboration has developed several techniques for studying Radon contamination in the SK water. In this proceedings, a measurement system which can measure Radon concentration in the SK water with the accuracy of 0.1 mBq/m3 level is presented. In addition, an evaluation of Radon background events in SK injecting Radon rich water into the SK tank, as well as future prospects are also presented.

    A new cooperative program among underground experiments, theorists, and low-background researchers was started in 2014 in Japan. The purpose of this program is to achieve technical and scientific synergies among underground researchers. In this report, the R& D of radon assay technique as an activity in this program is shown. The current status of the radioactivity database system in Kamioka is also shown.

    To precisely measure radon concentrations in purified air supplied to the Super-Kamiokande detector as a buffer gas, we have developed a highly sensitive radon detector with an intrinsic background as low as 0.33 +/- 0.07 mBq/m(3). In this article, we discuss the construction and calibration of this detector as well as results of its application to the measurement and monitoring of the buffer gas layer above Super-Kamiokande. In March 2013, the chilled activated charcoal system used to remove radon in the input buffer gas was upgraded. After this improvement, a dramatic reduction in the radon concentration of the supply gas down to 0.08 +/- 0.07 mBq/m(3). Additionally, the Rn concentration of the in-situ buffer gas has been measured 28.8 +/- 1.7 mBq/m(3) using the new radon detector. Based on these measurements we have determined that the dominant source of Rn in the buffer gas arises from contamination from the Super-Kamiokande tank itself. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V.     We present limits on sterile neutrino mixing using 4,438 live-days of atmospheric neutrino data from the Super-Kamiokande experiment. We search for fast oscillations driven by an eV2-scale mass splitting and for oscillations into sterile neutrinos instead of tau neutrinos at the atmospheric mass splitting. When performing both of these searches we assume that the sterile mass splitting is large, allowing sin2(Δm2L/4E) to be approximated as 0.5, and we assume that there is no mixing between electron neutrinos and sterile neutrinos (|Ue4|2=0). No evidence of sterile oscillations is seen and we limit |Uμ4|2 to less than 0.041 and |Uτ4|2 to less than 0.18 for Δm2> 0.1eV2 at the 90% C.L. in a 3+1 framework. The approximations that can be made with atmospheric neutrinos allow these limits to be easily applied to 3+N models, and we provide our results in a generic format to allow comparisons with other sterile neutrino models.

    In underground particle physics experiments, the radioactive noble gas Rn-222 generated from the decay chain of the uranium series could be a serious background source. We have been developing high-sensitivity radon detectors to assay radon in the Kamioka underground laboratory. In order to achieve a further low background level, we developed a new radon detector with better hermeticity. The high-voltage dependence and humidity dependence of the detection efficiencies were obtained through our calibration systems. The background level of the new radon detector was also measured.

    The trilepton nucleon decay modes p -> e(+)nu nu and p -> mu(+)nu nu violate vertical bar Delta(B - L)vertical bar by two units. Using data from a 273.4 kt yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande a search for these decays yields a fit consistent with no signal. Accordingly, lower limits on the partial lifetimes of tau(p -> e+nu nu) > 1.7 x 10(32) years and tau(p ->mu+nu nu) > 2.2 x 10(32) years at a 90% confidence level are obtained. These limits can constrain Grand Unified Theories which allow for such processes.

    For underground particle physics experiments, noble gas radon from U-chain decay series could be a source of serious background events. We have developed a high sensitivity detector for radon using electrostatic collection and PIN photodiode. Recently, we have developed a new type of radon detector.
