    It is worthwhile to classify paddy fields based on the long-term frequency of ponding, which strongly determines the yield of rice. However, the direct measurement of the frequency requires a large number of backscatter images from synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Another approach is the indirect estimation of the relative frequency of ponding from differences in ponding frequency with the same rainfall history. Any combination of backscatter coefficients with such rainfall history should result in a high accuracy of classification of paddy fields based on the relative frequency of ponding. This study aims to establish methodologies for the classification of rain-fed paddy fields into two categories: ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ fields, based on ponding frequency using a small number of time-series SAR backscatter coefficients that depend on the flood situation and soil water content of the land surface. By analyzing 21 images acquired by the ALOS-PALSAR during 2007–2011, patterns of rainfall history with obvious large differences between the two categories of paddy fields were determined. Through supervised classifications using a random forest classifier, it was evident that the backscatter coefficients onset of rainy seasons for years with an above average precipitation, would be suitable as variables for accurate classification. In years where the precipitation (1379 mm/year) neared the average (1330 mm/year), the supplementary use of a quartile deviation of the backscatter coefficient within each plot, that indicated a degree of partial ponding, increased the classification accuracy. It was also evident that the effective rainfall index, which registers a rough estimate of rainwater acculturation in the soil, was useful in the determination of periods of significantly large variations in the backscatter coefficient between categories of rice fields.

    In the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD), water levels at some stations have increased. However, the factors that cause this rise in the VMD have not been identified. We considered four factors that may have contributed to the water level rise: (1) increased runoff from upstream, (2) sea-level rise, (3) land subsidence, and (4) decrease in flood mitigation function because of construction of high dykes. We analysed daily maximum and minimum water levels, and mean daily water levels from 24 monitoring stations from 1987 to 2006. Using daily and annual water level differences, we classified the delta into two groups: one is dominated by flows from upstream, while the other is tide dominated. We then tested the trends of annual maximum and minimum water levels using the Mann-Kendall test, and identified the slope of the trend using the method of Sen. The areas of dyke construction were estimated using the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and Land Surface Water Index (LSWI) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. Results show (1) river inflow has little impact on rising water levels in the VMD, (2) the influence of high dykes on water level rise could not be quantified in this study, and (3) both maximum and minimum water levels significantly increased in the tide-dominated area. Trend of annual minimum water level can be considered as the sum sea-level rise and land subsidence. Therefore, we attribute 6.05mmyear(-1) (80%) to land subsidence and 1.42mmyear(-1) (20%) to sea level rise, indicating that inundations have been severe in the VMD, caused primarily by land subsidence.     The Chao Phraya delta in Thailand is a major rice production area. It is often subject to large flooding events, which may result in widespread crop failures, as most recently recorded in 2011 and 2006. The extent of flood damage in such areas is commonly assessed by field surveys. In this study, we investigate the spatial extent of flood damage to rice production in the Chao Phraya delta from 2000 to 2011 using moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer satellite images. We examine the temporal relationship between the harvest time, estimated from the time-series enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and the onset of inundation, estimated from the time-series land surface-water index and EVI. The total area of rice damage throughout nine provinces in the Chao Phraya delta during the severe flood in 2011 was estimated to be 79,189 ha, of which 41,410 ha was estimated as total damage. The damage in 2011 was particularly severe on the eastern side of the Chao Phraya River, and we found that most of the paddy fields that experienced flood damage in 2006 did not experience similar damage in 2011, despite the longer inundation period. Analysis over this 12-year period showed that there were few areas that were repeatedly subjected to damage, highlighting successful adaptations to avoid damage. This novel approach to agronomic flood-damage assessment using high temporal resolution imaging proposed in this study proved to be a promising tool for agronomic flood-damage assessments, which enable quick investigations providing valuable findings from wide area and long-term perspectives.

    Global warming is likely to exacerbate future fluvial floods in the world's mega-delta regions due to both changing climate and rising sea levels. However, the effects of sea level rise (SLR) on fluvial floods in such regions have not been taken into account in current global assessments of future flood risk, due to the difficulties in modeling channel bifurcation and the backwater effect. We used a state-of-the-art global river routing model to demonstrate how these complexities contribute to future flood hazard associated with changing climate and SLR in the world's largest mega-delta region, the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna Delta. The model demonstrated that flood water in the main channels flows into tributaries through bifurcation channels, which resulted in an increase in inundation depth in deltaic regions. We found that there were large areas that experienced an increase in inundation depth and period not directly from the SLR itself but from the backwater effect of SLR, and the effect propagated upstream to locations far from the river mouth. Projections under future climate scenarios as well as SLR indicated that exposure to fluvial floods will increase in the last part of the 21st century, and both SLR and channel bifurcation make meaningful contributions.

  • A global dataset of noiseless time-series vegetation and water indices for farmland analysis

    Time-series vegetation and water indices derived from remote sensing images are crucial materials for farmland analysis based on crop phenology and monitoring such as classification of cropping patterns and monitoring of crop growth and productivities. However, the optical remote-sensing images often contain problematic pixels, such as those affected by thick clouds and its shadows, resulting a noisy time-series data which is inadequate to use for farmland analysis. Lack of the high quality noiseless time-series data products have been a bottleneck for many studies on farmland analysis using remote-sensing data in both of global and local scales. Hence we aims in this study to produce remote-sensing data archives containing noiseless smoothed time-series Normalized Vegetation Index (NDVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), Land Surface Water Index (LSWI), and RGB composite (true color) image, covering global wide with the adequately downscaled 250-m resolution in 8-days interval from the period of 2000 to 2014 and up-to-date, derived from based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor images. The processing system for generating the global noiseless time-series data in this study is consist of four modules; image acquisition, preprocessing, noise reduction, and data archiving, implemented in Interactive Data Language (IDL) with PDP (Parallel Distributed Processing). Data products are derived from two sets of Terra/MODIS surface-reflectance 8-day composite data (MOD09Q1 v005 (250-m resolution) and MOD09A1 v005 (500-m resolution)) acquired from LP DAAC (Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center, USGS) on a regular basis automatically to update the latest products. To generate noiseless and smooth time-series data, we applied following well-established procedure: 1) Eliminate cloud and sensor noise pixels by referring the image quality information: 2) Reconstruct daily time-series data by referring the actual date of observation for each pixels: 3) Synthesize daily time-series Terra and Aqua: 4) Interpolate eliminated pixel value on time-series axis by liner interpolation method: 5) Apply the Savitzky-Golay filtering to time-series data to produce smoothed time-series data. Denoised true color image can be used for visually checking the quality of noise reduction. Data products are mapped by MODIS Sinusoidal Tiling System, and archived with Hierarchical Data Format-Earth Observing System (HDF-EOS) format containing various meta-information, which are the standard archive format for MODIS Land products distributed by USGS, so that users can use existing favorite tools such the MODIS Reprojection Tool (MRT) for handling the archives. The advanced noiseless time-series vegetation and water indices data archives produced in this study would contribute significantly to advanced analysis and monitoring of the crop production.

    Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) backscatter amplitude image data have proven useful in estimating soil moisture levels and in approximating areas of water inundation over large regions. Based on the pattern of seasonal change in the backscatter coefficient at each image pixel, this study classified a variety of crop fields in Northeast Thailand according to their hydrological characteristics. L-band horizontal-transmit horizontal-receive (HH) polarization images from advanced land observing satellite phased array type L-band synthetic aperture radar (ALOS-PALSAR) at six dates from January to December over the rainy season (May to November) in 2007 were used. Fifteen clusters of pixels were generated using the k-means method, with five variables obtained by taking the difference between the backscatter coefficient for the dry season (January) and the other five dates, effectively removing effects of soil surface roughness. As a result, a detailed spatial distribution of hydrological characteristics that accurately reflected topographical features and hydrological conditions was obtained.

    Seasonal changes in the impacts of fertilizer on the composition of agricultural drainage water were examined by analyzing the (87)Sr/(86)Sr isotope ratio and chemical composition of drainage water samples. Samples of drainage water were taken from the main drainage canals of the Lower Seyhan Irrigation Project, at sites designated as D10, D11, and D12. Plots of (87)Sr/(86)Sr vs. 1/Sr indicated that the (87)Sr/(86)Sr ratio of drainage water was positively related to those of fertilizer and irrigation water. The origins of Sr in two of the end-components were fertilizer and irrigation water. The data from the end-drain in winter suggested that the origin of Sr in the third end-component was fossil seawater. Analysis of a mixing model incorporating these three end-components showed that the origins of Sr in drainage differed markedly between summer and winter. Fertilizer made the greatest contribution to Sr in drainage water both in summer and winter, contributing 38-72% of total Sr in summer and 64-87% of total Sr in winter. In summer, fertilizer contributed 72% of total Sr in drainage water in D12, 44% in D10, and 38% in D11. This result implies that fertilizer was applied excessively at the D12 site. In winter, seawater accounted for 10% of Sr in drainage water in D12, whereas it accounted for 19-27% of Sr in drainage water in D10 and D11. Therefore, at least 70% of the salt in drainage water originates from fertilizer and irrigation water. At this study site, the salt originating from seawater is replaced by that from fertilizer and irrigation water, due to intensive agricultural management. The study site is a delta that lay on the ocean subsurface at least 3000 years ago, and therefore, was originally a primary salinization area. This result suggests that anthropogenic secondary salinization progressed over time via fertilizer and irrigation applications. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Adapting to climate change impacts on the water resources systems of the Seyhan River Basin in Turkey

    We developed an approach to simulate flood and drought risks under present and future climate with both present and alternative reservoir rules. MRI-CGCM2 and CCSR/NIES/FRCGS-MIROC were dynamically downscaled to the Seyhan River Basin in Turkey. The data covered two 10-year time slices corresponding to the present (1990s) and future (2070s). Hydrologic models with a reservoir model were driven using these downscaled data. The hydrologic simulations matched the observed flow, reservoir volume, and dam discharge. Relative to the present, the MRI and CCSR predicted average annual temperature rises of 2.0 and 2.7 degrees C, precipitation decreases of 157 and 182 mm, and annual runoff decreases of 118 and 139 trim, respectively. Analysis of the water resources was performed, taking into account changes in water use and examining alternative reservoir rules to cope with the projected changes in runoff and water use. The results indicated that the drought risk will not increase if water use does not increase. However, if water use increases and reservoirs continue to operate under the present rules, reservoir reliability will decrease. Alternative rules would reduce reliability losses in the reservoir system; however, the alternative rule that is the best adaptation in terms of drought risk Would considerably raise the flood risk. Therefore, integrated water management is required so that operation rules can be changed to meet hydrological and water use conditions.

    We explored the potential impacts of climate change on the hydrology and water resources of the Seyhan River Basin in Turkey. A dynamical downscaling method, referred to as the pseudo global warming method (PGWM), was used to connect the outputs of general circulation models (GCMs) and river basin hydrologic models. The GCMs used in this study were MRI-CGCM2 and CCSR/NIES/FRCGC-MIROC under the SRES A2 scenario, and the downscaled data covered two 10-year time slices corresponding to the present (1990s) and future (2070s). The hydrologic models along with a reservoir model were driven using the downscaled data for the present period. As a result, the temperature and precipitation, which were dynamically downscaled through bias-correction, were in good agreement with the observed data. The hydrologic simulation results also matched the observed flow, reservoir volume, and dam discharge. Therefore, we concluded that the PGWM combined with bias-correction is extremely useful to produce input data for hydrologic simulations. The simulation results for the future were compared with those for the present. The average annual temperature changes in the future relative to the present were projected to be +2.0 °C and +2.7 °C by MRI and CCSR, respectively. The annual precipitation decreased by 157 mm (25%) in MRI-future and by 182 mm (29%) in CCSR-future, and the annual evapotranspiration decreased by 36 mm (9%) in MRI-future and by 39 mm (10%) in CCSR-future the annual runoff decreased by 118 mm (52%) in MRI-future and by 139 mm (61%) in CCSR-future. The analysis of water resource systems was conducted by using a simple scenario approach to take into account changes in water use. This analysis indicated that despite the impacts of climate change, water scarcity will not occur in the future if water demand does not increase. However, if the irrigated area is expanded in the future under the expectation of current flow, water scarcity will occur due to the combination of decreased inflow and increased water demand. Thus, in the Seyhan River Basin, water use and management will play more important roles than climate change in controlling future water resource conditions. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.     第22回「野生生物と社会」学会大会, 2016年11月, 日本語, 東京農工大学農学部・農学府府中キャンパス, 農村地域においてニホンザルによる農作物被害は社会問題となっており,被害の低減を目指す対策の導入や研究は非常に盛んである.そのためニホンザルの集落への出没状況に関する知見は多く集まっており,実際に集落に出没した個体の中でも性年齢ごとで警戒心が異なることがわかっている.また,オトナオスは群れの中でも比較的警戒心が低く,集落に出没しやすいと言われている.しかし性年齢ごとの集落出没を定量的に評価する手段は未だ確立されておらず,出没しやすいという特徴がオトナオスのみに当てはまるのかどうかについては未知である.群れの集落出没頻度の変化は被害対策の効果検証の時に一般的であるが,性年齢段階ごとの出没を定量的に評価する手法を確立することで、段階的な被害対策の評価と策定に貢献すると考えられる.そこで本研究では各性年齢段階での警戒心の相違は集落への出没に影響するという仮定, 国内会議
